Although filled with big potential, Strange World falls flat, pretentious and predictable.

The world has some charm, but again isn't very engaging. However, the film doesn't seem to take itself too seriously, whether that's for the better or not. And the cast is not good, both in personality and design.

That said, the film isn't BAD. It works enough, can be fun at times and ends with a good feeling of completeness.

However, the characters were boring, the story wasn’t engaging enough, and I couldn’t help but feel certain elements in society were stomped on on purpose (masculinity, in particular). I didn’t mind Ethan being gay, but it wasn’t explored at all, and his love interest is nothing but arm candy when it comes to the audience. The climate agenda was WAAAY too obvious, and it was cheesy and grating to experience. Very disappointed, especially for Disney. Expand

It revolves around a family of explorers who must venture on a quest to save their insular civilization. This takes them to a new world where the creatures are all fancifully designed. Their exploits serve as a subtle message of environmental responsibility, while also harping on the meaning of family (which includes a gay son who's easily accepted). When they're in the fantasy world, the action and design are fun, but there are periods where the dialogue drags down the energy. Still, it's a beautifully animated, sweet story. Expand

It does not help that I recognized the sources for the ideas like “Journey to the Center of Earth” and “Fantastic Voyage” which are better. Also the character developments, a lot of twists and outcomes are foreseeable. I would describe Strange World as adventure and family movie with focus on political correctness and diversity. If this is a good or bad thing I will not specify as I will get hate either way. The story is set in a country of Avalonia which is surrounded by incredible high mountains which no one ever manged to cross to see what is behind. Jaeger Clade is a famous adventurer who wants to find a way through the mountains with friends and his teenage son names Searcher. However after finding a strange plant that radiates energy a fallout happened and Jaeger continues while his son and rest of the team return home. Approx 25 years later the plant changed the society but Jaeger never returned. I stop here to avoid spoilers but you should already make assumptions what will happen. While I liked the story and characters a lot is so predictable and foreseen from miles away. I was not that much invested because of this and the immersion could be higher. Again I repeat it is not garbage but the sources for the ideas were better. This might drag down my rating a bit. The characters aka voice actors were really good and I praise the whole cast. There is no misstep in the whole movie. Animation wist it is a beautiful and colorful movie. If the rest was as good as the animations and voice actors this would be a hit. Overall I think it is a 5/10. I see this as a potential hit with a better story approach. In this state it is too generic for my taste of movies. Compare it to the gold standards of the last years like “Zootopia” or “Inside Out” to recognize the differences. Expand

La película estuvo bien, ni más ni menos, el hecho de que su protagonista sea lgbt es irrelevante y la gente que se ofende por ello está mal de la cabeza.

Largely overlooked, and not that I think this Strange World has anything outstanding to present that people may have missed, but it's hardly the film that many critics said it was.

And it's absolutely understandable that within the Disney brand it feels like a minor work, and while that might be debatable, I also honestly have a hard time saying that this is a bad film.

I reiterate, it may not seem to have the broad appeal of the studio's best animated films, but it is essentially entertaining and, for kids, even better.

Literally the most forgettable Disney movie since Bolt. The animation is really good, some concepts are cool, some characters are fun, but it just left nothing on me

There's a lot I disliked about this movie, but - overall - I actually liked it.

CONS
1. The kid is annoying. Not because he's gay. He'd be equally annoying if he was straight. He's just annoying. Think the teenage John Conner in T2, only a total misfire. The way he is animated is annoying. His voice is annoying... but I knew all that from the trailer.

2. The grandfather is one dimensional and totally forgettable.

3. They try way too hard to be "diverse" with the characters. The main character is an openly gay biracial teenager with a three legged dog and the president of the world is a Native American woman with beads in her hair. I'm not anti-diversity, it just seems to be progressing from exhausting to absurd now.

4. I feel like I've seen Splat a bunch of times before. Like they've just taken a bunch of other Disney characters and removed all recognizable features leaving just the blueprint. I have long since learnt to look past the comic relief characters in these films. They're almost always awful. Splat isn't awful, but it doesn't have much room for personality either... so, I guess it's hard to get it wrong? I don't know. It's not much of a character.

5. The gay thing felt a little creepy somehow. I like aspects of what they did. I like that the grandfather (who a tough guy) doesn't even hesitate when he finds out his grandson is gay. Not sure I've ever seen that in a film, let alone a Disney cartoon... but I didn't like the totally unnecessary scene with the gay teen romance. The haircut of the kid he loves is cringe enough on it's own.

PROS
1. This film is less likely to kill you if you're epileptic. Too much children's animation these days is over-stimulating. Strange World has enough space to breather. You might say it has inner space.

2. The world building is good enough - alone - to justify the ticket price. I love creatures and weird alien planets, so this is right up my alley. I got a sense of childlike wonder watching it and I'm usually pretty jaded to that sort of stuff. It's not earth shattering or anything, but it's all very well done.

3. Love the ending. Dennis Quaid goes back in after 35 years.

The tale was good, and I mostly bought into it; as always, it was wonderful to have diverse cultural representation. I would not classify it as a classic, but some of the characters and soundtrack did strongly remind me of Star Wars. Will undoubtedly irritate individuals and occasionally referred to as boring. The animation itself, in my opinion, is entertaining. They did make a decent, if not amazing, movie in the form of Strange World. I don't think this will have a sequel, and I don't think it will end up being a Disney classic. Expand

The world itself is very vibrant and the creature designs are lovable yet creepy. However, it doesn't matter how good it looks if the story itself is mediocre. Unfortunately, Strange World has a bland and forgettable story that has a meaningful message with poor execution. It doesn't help that the characters aren't super memorable or even likeable at times. Ethan (the grandson) is such an annoying character who does dumb reckless things yet is never punished in any way for his choices. It's ridiculous as other characters who are flawed, learn from it and grow to be better. Ethan never learns anything and is just rewarded for being an absolute nuisance!

Kids might like this but it's definitely not going to be remembered. What a let down...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm watching many films with my kids, so I am used to the most cheesy kid films (most are bad, by adult standards). Strange World. My daughter asked if Strange World was made by the Avatar creator... And I guess that this is its biggest weakness: The story is not unique enough, too much "Pando" with Pandorian tropes in it. Also, the main story between the son and the father... Am I suppose to tell my kids that being a farmer is as exciting as being an explorer and scientist? And that the father is bad because he was captured underground for 25 years? The latter surprised me in particular on how selfish and ignorant the son was. One would imagine if your (however difficult) father disappears for 25 years, that you would search for him (which he didn't), at least worry about him (which apparently, was not a topic at all), and then when you find him and he tells you that he was kept underground that the father would be at least disappointed that the son gave up on him, like all of us. Yet, in this film... The father is bad, and it is the father's fault that the son did not find the courage or interest to search for him, in 25 years? Disney, please. Not okay. Expand

Strange World details the story of a family of explorers journeying to an unknown world to save a plant that's pivotal to their world.

The visuals shown here are lush and vibrant, and it brings an array of creatures that are different but familiar. The voice acting is also fitting.

Strange World brings a story that features themes of Acceptance, the family unit, representation and environmentalism. Although Strange World is hinged on great themes, the story ultimately becomes stuffed. The characters could have gotten more development, and most resolves in the movie are achieved without effort, making them feel very opportunistic and watered down. The strange world this flick portrays is also not realised properly, as most of these creatures feel lazily sketched.

Strange World may not be one of Disney's best, but it's still enjoyable.
