The film is set in Stockholm Sweden where an American robs the largest bank in the city and holds several of its workers hostage. The robber is unlike what most people would assume a criminal would be like and is remotely kind to the hostages. Due to this strange dynamic and their unwilling isolation in their workplace, the hostages actually begin to grow an unexpected bond and sympathy for their capturer called the Stockholm syndrome. Further, one of the hostages ends up developing a romantic connection with the capturer despite the fact that she has a husband and children outside the bank walls. Stockholm creates a conflict of interest for its audience as you begin to feel for the capturer just like the hostages do. This film does a great job in shedding a light on a true story revolving around an uncanny but real psychological condition. Expand

While the movie has great acting and the story it is based on is real and in a way interesting and important in history, the story itself is quite boring to watch in my opinion. Feels like short thing much more prolonged. But overall decent.

I've read a lot of comparisons to Dog Day Afternoon, but beyond certain similarities, frankly those comparisons turn out to be too far-fetched, and will ultimately create quite the wrong expectations in people.

Stockholm is based on a true story, and that adds an extra flavor to the story. The interest is bigger, so to speak.
However, the same film exposes it as an absurd story, so the notorious inconsistency in tonality and development, makes it a film that's hardly taking itself seriously, which would not be so negative, if at least the experience was more stimulating.

Ethan Hawke, without effort, manages to make the film not entirely disposable, but there really isn't anything meaningful to rescue from this.

Hawke and Rapace writhes in those shared memories that pauses us still, in the middle of this hilarious mayhem.

Stockholm

Budreau, feels like he is always under surveillance. Safe are his film and authentic, hallmarked his methods. The director, Robert Budreau is playing safe, which catches you with quite a surprise considering the theme of the film. The risks are emerged from left and right or even from the top- "NO GAS!"- and yet the survival instinct of this empathetic criminal keeps us at the brisk of our emotions. Nails get bitten away and the laughs turned into a jarring flat emotion that I could only describe as captivating or surprised or satisfied, I don't know exactly, maybe all of it packed and send under to the address, "entertainment".

And that is where the film should have sticked to, for as soon as it aims for something it cannot get hold off, the earned and built pyramid collapses brutally. Another missing puzzle is the key to the observation. A known and occurred event as such should have a better observer than a storyteller. And on the plus side, is the balance between comedy and drama which frankly I wasn't so sure about, going in on this film. And after experiencing it, I think it is those dead eyes of Ethan Hawke that whips you with excitement.

If they grow dead in a comic situation you find yourself giggling like a six year old, and if they find themselves dead when insulted for his capabilities or incapabilities, the drama conjures the screen. And as short lived and quirky this love track may feel like, Noomi Rapace surely carries it in her body language, forever. She, describing a recipe and having a melt down, defines the thin line that film walks throughout this so-called heist occurring in Stockholm, that turned out to be a work, a showcase of brave potent friendship, ready to jump out of the plane to save the day.

Emotions and absolute extremes from actor Ethan Hawke portraying robber Lars Nystrom lends a must see performance to audience members. The outlaw persona from Hawke’s character drives the pacing and direction of the story, and we find the captured hostages slowly supporting this outlaw over their own Swedish government who seem to have given up on their safety. This occurrence is actually where the condition of Stockholm syndrome stems from, and really creates a nice depth to the overall production of the true story aspect. Throughout the film we even see Lar’s character reveal sympathy that takes away from his macho badass mantra, and it shows why one of the bank tellers played by Noomi Rapace ends up falling for him. This is a complete story that gives a fun, grungy, and sarcastic heist movie new life in the era of superhero movies. Expand

My favorite part of the film was the acting. I felt as if everyone really embodied their roles which led to the connections feeling very genuine. According to Matthew Passantino from FilmThreat, “Hawke is a blast as Lars, playing it big and broad but registering as a man on a mission, even when he doesn’t seem to have anything resembling a plan. Hawke has always been an underrated actor, creating a simple, everyday realism in projects like The Before Trilogy or Boyhood and playing loud and fun as he does here. He and Rapace have a great captor-captee relationship, playing off each other with a mix of irrational behavior from Lars and a more rational way of thinking from Bianca”. I completely agree with this and thought that Ethan Hawke did an excellent job at selling his character and bringing energy to the film. The acting by both actors is phenomenal, and by the end, it makes a lot of sense as to why they have a connection. I really enjoyed this movie with all the heart-pounding action and focus on human connection, Stockholm is a must watch, especially if you are a psychology buff. Expand

So much so that Stockholm was nominated for achievement in sound editing at the Canadian Screen Awards. The soundtrack honestly kept the movie uplifting and really helped to maintain the dark humor of the film throughout its entirety. The movie is set it in 1973 Stockholm, Sweden and the Bob Dylan soundtrack perfectly reflects the groove and soul of ‘70’s music. The soundtrack was not distracting from the story behind the movie, because the sound editing skills of the songs only enhanced the mood being portrayed on film. Stockholm is action-packed with exhilarating and hilarious stand-offs between bank robbers and cops. I think this movie works so well and is so uplifting and hilarious is because each character understands and shares the same dark, dry humor with a quick wit. The battle of the wits in this film will make you laugh out loud. I highly recommend this film to those who love to laugh or need a great pick-me-up. Expand

The movie "Stockholm" portrays the story of the woman who seemed to have fallen under the spell of her captor after being held hostage in the bank for multiple days. It’s a very unusual and thought-provoking story line that I thought the movie did a great job of exemplifying. Strongly suggest everyone go see this movie. Expand

The film takes a highly dramatic subject matter and presents it as a comedy, which made it both easier and more fun for its audience to process and understand how a person might actually succumb to Stockholm syndrome. The screenplay was cleverly written so that you too, the viewer, might have found yourself sympathizing with the criminal/captor of this tale as his main goal seemed to be nothing more malicious than to get his buddy out of jail. Part of what might have swayed you, and what eventually swayed the hostages, was that he often went out of way to care for his hostages and ensure they were treated while they were held captive. This included letting one of them phone her family and requesting tampons from the police for another. It was all very funny and as the film suggests early on, very “absurd,” but aside from the story, the 70’s aesthetics were nailed perfectly with big budget b-roll of a 70’s Stockholm, an attractive color pallet focused mostly on orange and teal, and some Bob Dylan songs included in the film’s soundtrack. The acting was also memorable and noteworthy with primary characters portrayed by Noomi Rapace, Ethan Hawke, and Mark Strong. A good film worth watching. Expand

It masterfully combines well-written, humorous dialogue with characters that have great chemistry and grow with each other perfectly. This characterization is so important to the overall feeling of the film; it’s obvious that the film is written to make the viewer sympathize with the captor and leave the film feeling the same as the captives. What really did the most for me was the performances, especially from Ethan Hawke and Noomi Rapace, whose peculiar romance really reinforces the effects of the aforementioned syndrome. Hawke really steals the show, as he’s usually typecast in serious roles, but here, his comedic timing and charm make him such a standout character, and despite the gravity of the crime he’s committing, is still the one you root for all the way till the end. There are multiple ways one can go about acquiring a car, but of course, as a last resort you can always rob a country’s largest bank and demand one in return for the safe release of three hostages. This is exactly how Stockholm protagonist Lars Nystrom came upon one. At first glance, Ethan Hawke’s character seems an amateur bank robber with absurd requests for his negotiators - complete with a “cowboy” persona that an audience easily finds laughable. However, as a seemingly lighthearted storyline unfolds into a dark and solemn tale based on true events, we bear witness to a most interesting character development of Nystrom; leading both viewers, and the innocents he holds hostage, to consider that there may be more to what meets the eye. You can decide for yourself. Expand
