The worst star wars movie ever made. It makes no sense and ruins the story of episode 7

It’s lacking some good lightsaber fights
And the story of Finn and Rose is just pointless (at least cool fight with Phasma)

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My viewing of The Last Jedi was constantly polluted by cringe. It could have been a great movie. Empire was my favorite installment of the Star Wars saga. The second film in a trilogy is where things can get weird and norms can be broken. I can see that this was Johnson's intention, but the film feels cramped and forced. Last Jedi felt like an indie movie stuffed into blockbuster pacing, which just doesn't match up. I enjoyed the subtlety of Ridley's story line, but the moral messaging of the Finn/Rose plot and the Po/Holdo plot were so beat-you-over-the-head straight forward that I had troubles taking them seriously. Besides, I'm not sure I love the message of Holdo. I know that it was meant to read as "trust women," which I will always get behind, but it read more as "blindly follow orders and complacently accept a lack of transparency." It feels so militaristic, running against the pro-democratic messaging of the entire Saga. The dialogue in Star Wars has always been a little odd, but, other than Driver and Ridley, the cast of Last Jedi couldn't pull it off like Fischer, Hamill or Ford. If I ever hear "master codebreaker" again, I will have a psychotic episode. The humor of the movie got laughs from disinterested parents brought to the theater by their kids, but was nothing more than cringey gags. I missed the sarcasm and blissful camp of the original trilogy. Expand

This was **** Number 7 was quite good but this was worse. For instance, Princess Leia floats in space by the force. Which she hasn't used before. Is it just a coincidence that she happened to use it then or is it bollocks?

This movie has some good scenes and dialog to it, also it does take alot of risks, the main problem with this movie is the casino planet scene, it was pointless it had no reason to be in there.

Rian Johnson makes the first original-feeling Star Wars movie since the 80s. Divisive, sure, but when someone expects plain buttered noodles, it's gonna rankle them when you add some red pepper flakes.

ItHaving rewatched the entire saga recently, this "The Last Jedi"'s viewing was better than its first at the pictures, strangely enough. It has the best cinematography of its trilogy - by far!, and delves into some darker themes as well. It was refreshing to see 'real' peril and not having a typical space battle resolve all problems. The humor works 4x out of 10 for me, so I guess that's not too bad for a contemporay Disney film... Some 'unpredictable' moments really felt original and in some cases - I thought were - exhilirating. Here also lie some of the best moments that COULD HAVE BEEN in the Star Wars saga. However, these 'unpredictable' moments are, ultimately, also its biggest let-down. At a certain point, it just tries WAY too much and just feels boring, cheesy and monotenous. All these moments are given more importance than the characters, so by the end, I just stopped caring really. It undermines its own storyline. The whole Finn plot was totally useless and you really feel it with its 2h30 run time. I, personally, think its the best of its trilogy as it felt original and - somehow - that's what this trilogy lacked the most. Expand

Star Wars: Episode VIII seems more like a culmination of all the reasons what is wrong with movies nowadays. A beloved, renowned franchise like Star Wars goes in the hands of a big company which is all into secularism. Sometimes I feel DisneyStar Wars: Episode VIII seems more like a culmination of all the reasons what is wrong with movies nowadays. A beloved, renowned franchise like Star Wars goes in the hands of a big company which is all into secularism. Sometimes I feel Disney movies are not movies. They are festivals. They celebrate diversity. And the worst part is that Disney, the religion which is celebrating this festival, doesn't take very kindly of the "infidels". As a result they are more concerned about the movie doing good in China and Africa than actually telling a good story. They can imagine little girls from Middle East play with Rey Palpatine dolls and porg/fathier stuffed toys, but not giving the fans what they have been asking for all these years.
One thing I really like about this movie is that it is able to deliver the needed impact using its CGI. The way they used the FTL to tear right across the enemy ships was so cool. But yeah, that's the only one thing I like about the movie. To show that one scene they ruined the whole concept of FTL travelling. Luke Skywalker lives between adorable Porgs, but he's only Luke Skywalker for the namesake. He doesn't do anything that makes us feel that he's important to the story. Heck, literally his role in the movie is that he dies!
This is exactly what's wrong with movies today. First they take a popular franchise that doesn't make movies anymore, or has a lot of books/games/TV shows. Then they get the fans hyped to make them realise they are about to make something big for them. In order to do this they sell their merchandise because they know the gullible fans will be absolutely ready to lap it all up. After that they will throw in some secularism - make a white protagonist, a black sidekick, an Asian man/woman who will help them, someone who is being oppressed because there's absolutely no other way a hero can be a hero if he doesn't speak for someone's rights. An important character should also be there who will do nothing other than fan service. An absolutely meaningless plot twist will also do some good. With all that done, just add a big CGI fight and get over with it.
So in conclusion, Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi is not a movie. It's a fan service. This wouldn't have been a problem if it DID fan service and not become one. We had watched this movie for a plot about Jedi fighting the Sith, not for seeing Finn free some fathiers. The movie is set a long, long ago in a galaxy far, far away. So all this SJW stuff doesn't make any sense.

Nevertheless, as I said before the Kylo Ren-Rey storyline works for me and its also a pretty stunning film to look at. I also admit that the 150 minutes flew by.

There is a sense of not caring during this first bit of the film where both the character interactions and plot delivery are performed in a lazy, sometimes disgraceful, manner. Thankfully, it's a huge relief that two thirds of the film deliver what needed to be delivered from the continuing, beloved franchise: familiar faces, action, unpredictable plot twists, exploitation of character strengths and weaknesses, and even moments that will quicken your pulse and make you sit at the edge of your seat. The film performs just well enough for us to wait in anticipation for the next episode. Overall, "The Last Jedi" is a solid entry and nothing more. Special kudos to Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver for getting most comfortable as their characters since the last episode. On that note, continue to rest in peace Carrie Fisher. Expand

Even the jokes that were made were tired. This didn't really feel like a Star Wars movie; it was more like a Disney movie. The screenplay for this movie should have been tighter considering how long it is. Although the narrative was a shambles, the cinematography and visual effects were still fantastic, and the directing was passable. I'm not sure how somebody could give this a 1 (after seeing so many of those) without giving the visuals any credit. I give it a fair and honest 6 out of 10. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I feel like this movie has a lot of interesting themes and characters. I just wish the movie fit the trilogy more cohesively. Some of the highest highs in the series with the Holdo Maneuver and Luke force projecting. But I wish Finn and Rey had more screen time together and more important ties. Do not like the romance between Kylo and Rey at all. that would be my least favorite part. Expand

But in the realms of the Star Wars saga, it 100% is. The Last Jedi is everything a Star Wars movie is/should be, and goes even beyond that. Its themes are woven into the fabric of the story, so that while the plot moves forwards there isn't a single moment on screen that does not teach our characters a lesson - or shows that they have failed at learning one. Mark Hamill delivers his best performance as Luke in what is, in my opinion, one of the best takes on bringing back a legacy character to a sequel. Even better: the movies takes unexpected turns for the viewer, that yet make perfect sense for the characters. Contrary to what has been said too many times, it follows perfectly and expands upon most of what was set up in The Force Awakens, while pulling the saga forwards in new thematic directions. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is like a kombucha. It has a sharp taste in there somewhere, but it's still good, and very healthy. Acting is great. People complain about Rose, but I think she's a really good character. Her and Finn's side story could have been better, though. It could have been tweaked to have a bit more impact, as well as the fact that nothing really comes of it in the end. I mean, I guess Phasma dies... but really there isn't much outcome to that plotline. The rest of the movie is fantastic, though. The film subverts expectations in a careful way, being radically different to what we know, but in a way that, in my opinion, still feels incredibly respectful of what came before. (not like Rise of Skywalker's random shamble of ideas coalesced into a confusing mess of spectacle that retcons the plot of half the previous movies.) With fantastically written characters (Luke especially, fight me) and a phenomenal final act, it's a movie that, while I couldn't call it a masterpiece, is great. There is a strange feeling throughout, though, of a weird unenjoyable-ness relative to the movie's quality. Overall, great movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Going into this movie I had one wish, I thought "Please don't be a repeat of Episode V." The Force Awakens mirrored A New Hope, and while it made sense to reassure returning fans, and give any new fans a fantastic story to start with, it disappointed me a little how safe they played it. The Last Jedi took all the expectations I had going in and threw them out the window. Now most people are upset by this. They wanted all their questions answered more or less the way they were expecting. I feel the exact opposite, and yes I am a long time fan of ALL the previous movies, not that I should have to qualify my opinion with that. This movie was exhilarating. I can't remember the last time I turned to my friend in the theater with my mouth open in amazement because I'm so shocked about what just happened. It made the movie exciting, and the stakes higher, since I no longer felt completely sure about anything that was going to happen. Movies are ultimately just entertainment, and it certainly succeeded in that regard. The visuals, acting, spectacle, sound, etc was phenomenal. The entire scene in Snoke's throne room made me want to cheer. I enjoyed this movie the whole way through, and I am excited about what direction the new Star Wars will take in the future. For all the people who want to nitpick every detail and piece of lore, Star Wars doesn't belong to you. It doesn't even belong to George Lucas anymore. If you don't like the ideas of the people who work very hard and do their best to make the best movie they can then don't watch them, and leave the rest of us alone. Expand

The Last Jedi brought so many good things in this installment, including new characters, brand new backstories, and a direction that may inevitably impact future Star Wars movies in general. Since this film is directed by the guy that directed Looper and few episodes of my all-time favorite show Breaking Bad (Rian Johnson), has brought in a very unique approach that made this latest installment very mature than The Force Awakens. After seeing this film, I was blown away of how epic and surreal that movie has turned out to be when it comes to the action intensity, performances, and the sound mixing. This film is awesome compared to Empire Strikes Back, but not as masterful as The New Hope. And Disney.... please don't ruin Star Wars! Expand

Not recommended. Rian Johnson might not be a bad director, but he made a bad movie. It's not worth getting angry about, but it's telling that he thinks Empire Strikes Back would have backlash today. It wastes or abuses the established characters in order to highlight the new, poorly developed characters. It also a terrible movie in general; It features horrible logic flaws, ill timed humor, pointless subplots, terribly obvious and sloppy scientific flaws and characters who seem to act almost randomly at times with no consistent motivation. There was nothing about this movie which made me want to see it again and almost no scene that was not ruined by a flaw in character, plot or execution. This is not the Star Wars movie You were looking for; Move along, Move along.. Expand

A much farther attempt than Force Awakens attempted to conjure. Rian johnson does spend too much time with the resistance, and makes it a very throttled, back-n-forth film that never really allows you to connect or hone in to something particular. It wants to do so much. And to its quality, has great effect. But the storytelling became a bit of a juggle-act. On a space odyssey level, it delivers. But as a story following up a very teasing, simple first instalment, Last Jedi does too much and leaves little to look forward to. My complaints are simple, the storytelling wasn't honed in. Instead of making us feel through the trauma, tension of what was going on. Things just happened for thunderous cinematic effect, which they do. But as a whole, you walk away from Last Jedi more throttled than engrossed. And wishing it conveyed its ideas better, in a more honed-in way. As epic as it comes off, was it necessary? While we're left with shame and consequence. Expand

Particularly the Luke Skywalker character, I have been a lifelong fan and have loved all the movies, read the novels, watched the cartoons, purchased the toys, collected memorabilia, attended SW events etc. etc. I loved the prequels, (except maybe the midichlorians thing) and really liked, I mean really loved TFA and all the new stories and possibilities it created. I didn’t have a fan theory, and I wasn’t looking for nostalgia coming into TLJ, I just wanted the story to continue. Instead what I got is the character assassination of Luke, all the interesting new characters become irrational and pointless and a bunch of plot holes and new cannon that makes the suspension of disbelief more difficult for this and all the other past movies. The visuals were Amazing, the fight scenes and the space fights were also probably the best in the franchise. And the porgs were adorable. The new planets were visually stunning and super interesting for future media. But I just can’t get past the narrative; the actual story being told itself, mostly characters making decisions inconsistent with their personalities, pointless side stories. Expand

Ez egy szar. A leghosszabb legrosszabb star wars film. Egy nagy csalódás. Sajnos.
