Once an institution of imagination, technological achievement andTo think that a Star Wars film could represent some of the most negative aspects of modern cinema, modern pop culture, fandom, and even society, is the sad reality we live in. Once an institution of imagination, technological achievement and effective storytelling simplicity, The Last Jedi becomes the antithesis of what Star Wars once stood for, becoming an icon of one of the most cancerous social mentalities of our times, and its damage, not only to the entertainment industry, but to the cult of fiction (and even the making of such) should not be understated.

It's divisive in a way that it shouldn't, its perplexing in its creative decisions (like infamously firing the director and main creative force half way through the trilogy. Mozel tov, Kathleen Kennedy), and its experimental in extremely unappropiate ways, even going as far as to insult any member of the audience that disagreed to the genius, as if us mere mortals weren't deserving of such a masterpiece. An honor it shouldn't proudly boast of, since its juvenile, "first draft" pimples could be smelled from the back seat of the theater. It gets an extra star for some token efforts in terms of art direction, but that ain't saying much. It isn't enough to consider it "style over substance", even. That's the level of tokenism it executes. Then again, Disney's/Lucasfilm's history of corporate racism and performative activism is evidence enough of their tendencies of tokenism, so that's that. Speaking of which, it makes you feel sorry for the cast, who had to smile through the fallout, in what once was the dream of any aspiring actor, now just a regretful stain in their résumé.

This "movie" hasn't faded into the oblivion of the public consciousness solely on account of its infamous legacy since, as far as its cinematic merits go, its as mediocre as you would expect from a cashgrab sequel, Amazing Spider-Man 2 style, which is not exactly what you paid for in the ticket booth. Its painfully mediocre to the point of frustration (since a greater evil wouldn't be this damaging), barely holding a candle to the likes of Attack of the Clones. At least that one had a decent lightsaber battle, something TLJ couldn't even bother to attempt. Its bland, it undermines the previous movie and its predecessors, it tarnishes its legacy, and it sent pop culture into an obscurantism of sorts. It's fair to deem it "one of the worst sequels of all time", as it truly is an excercise of caution for any aspiring filmmaker, writer, and artist who honestly cares about the craft.

Not even the memes can save this one.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My favorite of the sequel trilogy... it isn't the best of course and the it is a bit of a mess. Rian Johnson's take on Star Wars was an interesting one. The characters are mostly okay, but Vice-Admiral Holdo was such a **** that assumed she knew who Poe was just by one event made me want to stab her. Rose Tico was a character I liked at first, but then I realized she didn't save the slave kids on Canto Bight and instead only freed the animals. Why didn't Finn do anything about the enslaved kids? Finn feels like a guy who would have freed them, considering his background. However, though some scenes don't make scientific sense, it's still Star Wars and it was fun for me to watch. General Hux is a stupid sand bag though. I liked Kylo Ren and his scene where he destroyed the mask. Adam Driver portrays Kylo very well and Kylo's dialogue always feel good to me. The Rise of Skywalker having Kylo Ren have his mask again didn't make sense to me because in this movie he makes a huge point that he outgrew it. Anyway, Luke Skywalker... I was fine with how he was in the movie and I thought it made sense. Mark Hamill did an amazing job and his scene with Yoda made me happy. I know the fight scenes weren't super good, but I still really liked them. I wish more questions were answered in this movie, but it was what it was. I liked it. Expand

Ruined established law and character arcs to be ‘subversive’ for the sake of it. Behind the twists and the glossy visuals is a poorly written film with a plot that makes no sense.

A lot of people trashed the fans who didn’t like it as if they were the problem. Star Wars has been a higher phenomenon that has been around for over 40 years because of the massive fan base that has endured. If films aren’t for the fans then who are they actually for?

I can't believe that Rian Johnson sidelined Finn in order to boost a white fascist up to the role of male lead. I can't believe that Rian Johnson undid all of the nonwhite characters' previous characterizations to reduce them to racist stereotypes. And I can't believe that the narrative utterly demeaned and degraded Finn and Poe's characters. As an Asian woman, I'm ANGRY that they turned Rose Tico into a vehicle for anti-Black racism. This movie was a bunch of racist drivel against all of its nonwhite characters, and it was an utter waste of John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Kelly Marie Tran, and Mark Hamill's immense acting talents. What an utterly terrible movie. Expand

Excellent, one of my favourites from the franchise so far.

'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' makes for an exciting 152 minutes! Sure it probably could've been a little shorter, but at no point did I personally feel it drag. The cast give great performances, while the music and whole look of the film is extremely pleasant.

Daisy Ridley and John Boyega do their thing and are enjoyable once again, Ridley particularly impressed me. I also like Adam Driver in this, while it's always pleasing to see Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher involved. As for newcomers, Benicio del Toro and Kelly Marie Tran stand out.

There are also some incredible shots, the entire sequence at the end thrilled me - there's a particular part involving Laura Dern (even if her character, overall, isn't all that good) that looks utterly superb.

All in all, I felt very satisfied and very entertained after watching this. Quality film, in my eyes anyway.

It's just a continuation of the modern obsession in cinema of annoying female leads that are supposed to kick ass but only succeeds in kicking the audience In the **** and groin while taking a dump on actually good female leads in movies. The characters in general are unmemorable and plain, they kill suspense every opportunity they get and the aim of the movie doesn't even seem to be to be a great movie, but rather a social commentary in an ungodly mix with poorly done fanservice. If you can ignore the strong impulse to bury your face in your hands every five minutes out of cringe and annoyance, it can be, though not enjoyable, at least somewhat entertaining - I did finish watching it after all - so it gets a 2 rather than a 0. If you liked the original star wars (or even just episode 7) this movie will disappoint you, it's mediocre at best and unbearably bad at worst. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Aside from the visuals this movie was trash. The director appeared to just want to shock people by destroying all that was set up in episode 7, and by doing so he made an unfixable mess. True fans hate it and critics and woke journalists love it, that pretty much sums it up. I wish people would leave their politics out of our games and movies. We waited decades to see our hero eventually turn into a pathetic husk. At least the mandalorian is beginning to set things right. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. despite all the negative reviews, this movie is actually really good. if you learn to look past your own expectations, you'll see that this is the logical progression of the star wars universe. After their defeat, the first order again goes on the hunt and destroys almost all of the resistance fleet. The good guys are on the run now and their last hope is Luke Skywalker. The thing with Luke in this movie is that he feels real. He doesn't feel like a soulless jedi knight like the prequels, but rather like an actual human being who faces regret and depression due to his past mistakes. He isn't the saving grace the resistance was hoping for, and it's up to Rey to convince him to return. He sees the potential that Rey possess and refuses to train her because he isn't afraid of her, he's afraid of himself. He knows that he won't be able to trust himself when training her, like his last encounter with Ben solo. Another thing this movie does really well is expand the character of kylo ren. He feels regret and is second guessing his action of killing his father, and snoke sees it. Kylo feels like a tortured soul in this movie, and the audience actually feels bad for this horrible person. I also really enjoyed the duel on crait. We get the big return of Luke, but not through his lightsaber abilities, but his connection to the force. There's a lot of hard decisions that were made in the creation of this movie, and I commend Rian Johnson for making a lot of the right choices. Unlike the other star wars movies that these 'die hard' fans scream about being the best, this movie has a moral. It shows us the cost of war, and how even though there's a winning side, there are companies and corporations that are winning even more.

With that being said, there are still some things I'd change about this movie. I love the inclusion of force ghost yoda, but the puppet looks a little off. Also, I feel like the death of phasma wasn't earned and felt a little forced.

This is a film made by a cameraman, it has cool shots and artsy camerawork. And that concludes the list of good things in this film.

Fan-favourite characters are not at all themselves, Luke is like an entirely different person altogether, undermining all of the character development of the original trilogy. How does one go from "I refuse to kill my father, I am a jedi" to "Uh oh, my nephew has dark thoughts, better sneak into his hut while he's sleeping and stab him with a lightsaber."? The answer is, one does not. This movie is garbage, and the people who made it most likely haven't even watched a single star wars movie before. Every intense moment is interrupted by a bad joke, just like the intense moment of everyone who expected this film were experiencing was interrupted by the bad joke that is this film. The film features numerous plotholes, while plotlines from the previous film are thrown completely out the window. The hyped-up villain turns out to be no trouble at all. There's an entire plotline that literally ends with main characters going "welp, I guess this was all pointless, let's go back." Previously established lore is freely broken in several places, which results in the previous films all also being subjected to question on those areas. All the male characters suddenly have IQ's of 90 or below, because identity politics were more important to the filmmakers than the characters that everyone loved. And the capable characters, aka all the women involved are also completely and utterly boring mary sues, who come out of nowhere and there are no emotional ties established between them and the audience, because there is nothing relatable about any of them. People relate to characters who struggle, make mistakes and rise above themselves, not to characters that are good at everything by default. In fact everyone dislikes characters like that, because the natural reaction to someone being perfect at everything is envy. If it weren't for some nice camera shots, I would rate this movie a 0 out of 10.

It subverts your expectations. There are twists. Huge twists, even. Personally, I enjoyed it a lot.

We learn more about Kylo Ren and Luke in this movie. Kylo Ren has an interesting backstory. The Force is expanded upon and we learn about a new Force ability. There are a lot of action scenes. Very cool lightsaber scenes and space battle scenes, there's never a dull moment. There are some funny quips here and there, which I enjoyed. There were also some moments where I actually felt emotional.

All in all, I think The Last Jedi is a fun Star Wars movie. I've seen it multiple times and the more I see it, the more I seem to love it.

Plot armor keeps driving the whole story. It's like completely random things happening in succession and no one cared about making the motivations of the characters visible to the viewer. In addition, dialogues are significantly weaker than in the first part. In some very important scenes, the dialogues are completely superficial and general. You could confuse them with children talking. A lot of fancy things had to happen in this movie and no one cared about telling why. In the first part, this was ok because it fitted into an overall mystery. But if there is a mystery, you have to progress it and not put it into a mixer and scramble it to an unrecognizable word sausage. Expand

I have few reasons: Luke Skywalker Gives Up, Light speed ramming is a thing now I guess, They kill the main villain in the second movie of a Trilogy, Disney doesn’t know how Light Sabers work ie they cut through rock but not through living things. Fighting scenes are horribly fake and the degenaration is complete.

The director is unable to workd with the plot left open in force awakens and apparently killld the main villan by antecipation..

Very painful to watch

I don't remember how many times I had to face palm while watching VIII, but must be a whole lot because my hand is sore. Apart from complete illogical behavior of the characters, I couldn't wait until this episode was over. It's so long and boring. Yes, there were several scenes that I enjoyed, I'm not gonna lie. Disney realised that 'never change a winning formula' wasn't in place anymore. They needed new values and leave the predictable (and almost milked) concepts behind. The simplicity of good versus evil makes place for something more nuanced. A lot of people will hate this movie. I can only applause it.

By the time the movie ended, it had brought pure catharsis. One advice: go empty-minded and enjoy the ride.

ItHaving rewatched the entire saga recently, this "The Last Jedi"'s viewing was better than its first at the pictures, strangely enough. It has the best cinematography of its trilogy - by far!, and delves into some darker themes as well. It was refreshing to see 'real' peril and not having a typical space battle resolve all problems. The humor works 4x out of 10 for me, so I guess that's not too bad for a contemporay Disney film... Some 'unpredictable' moments really felt original and in some cases - I thought were - exhilirating. Here also lie some of the best moments that COULD HAVE BEEN in the Star Wars saga. However, these 'unpredictable' moments are, ultimately, also its biggest let-down. At a certain point, it just tries WAY too much and just feels boring, cheesy and monotenous. All these moments are given more importance than the characters, so by the end, I just stopped caring really. It undermines its own storyline. The whole Finn plot was totally useless and you really feel it with its 2h30 run time. I, personally, think its the best of its trilogy as it felt original and - somehow - that's what this trilogy lacked the most. Expand

It's hard to fathom how so many special effects that cost millions could not help make this movie less painful to watch. This needed to be directed by Rogue One's director who seems to be the only person left that knows how to make a starwars movie, or collin treverrow. I was so please to hear he was the director considered he made the movie "safety not guaranteed" and considering how the movie turned out, I find it makes sense why he quit due to creative differences and tried to distance himself from this garbage. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ok, for me, it is the worst Star Wars movie and it is very difficult to explain why is so bad, as Star Wars movie as movie in general (I said this, because many people think that it is a good movie but a bad Star Wars movie).

At first i´m going to start with good aspects:

-Kylo Ren evolution, but this is thanks the Adam Driver actuation
-Glass dogs
-Actuation Marck Hamill, although his script is a s**t
-Some BB8 scenes. Ok the bad:

-Boring worlds
-Bad scripts and some bad actuations
-Plot with many holes
-The worst ships in all saga (The Resistance bombers concretaly)
-Too comedy
-Soundtrack repetitive
-Special effects are good, but inferior with the before movie.
-Any memorable scene (Some people said Yoda scene, but this doesn´t have sense)
-Destroy the Star Wars Universe (The force, the ships wars....)
-Copy many scenes episodes V and VI but worse
-The Casino is a s**t it is possible that i leave more, but i don´t remember more; is a alwful movie and i can´t understand the "critics" give it tens.

I think luke´s character is widely misunderstood. he is flawed and his poor decision making leads to horrible things, which is very accurate to former portrayals, and his only good decisions are when he decides not to fight. A core theme is the temptation of the dark side from the light, and the redemption of those who previously chose the dark. This is perfectly portrayed in the new sequal.

The music is abused and misused. Watch youtuber "sideways" and his video essay about the music in "the rise of skywalker" for details.

The films have political agendas to pander to the growing audience of SJWs and it does this by adding meaningless filler characters to reach a race/sex/sexuality quota. many characters serve no meaningful part of the story.

the core story is compelling enough but too much filler and bad agendas ruin this film as well with not having a clear vision or direction.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As a Star Wars fan, I really wanted to like this movie. But I didn't. While it has its moments, it's far from the quality film we deserve. I have always maintained that I love all Star Wars movies equally and think they all deserve a place in the series. I love the original trilogy, I love the prequels, and I even really loved The Force Awakens. Which is why this movie was such a disappointment.

This movie doesn't "feel" like Star Wars. Rogue One didn't really "feel" like Star Wars either, but in a different way. Rogue One was different, but still good. The Last Jedi feels like a high-quality Star Wars fan fiction that the interns drafted up while all the talented Star Wars writers were out to lunch. From the very outset, we're given an opener with tons of cheese that I guess was supposed to make the kids laugh because Disney mandated it. And the entire film is full of forced one-liners and humor that falls flat. Then there's Kathleen Kennedy's lovely forced diversity. Every character in the Resistance is either a woman, a racial minority, or often both. Laura Dern plays an unlikable moron with purple hair and Rose Tico is completely unnecessary to the film. One of the characters even has an annoying speech impediment.

Nobody cares about this kind of stuff in movies, and it's especially annoying considering it came at the cost of quality. Speaking of which, this movie is all over the place. There are a handful of good scenes and not much else. I forgave Rey's effortless use of the Force in Episode VII because it had just awakened in her and was so powerful, even Snoke felt it. But Rey doesn't even have much of a personality in TLJ and overcomes every dumb obstacle with minimal effort. Speaking of Snoke, he's not a mysterious dark presence anymore, he's a wrinkled old man in a hideous bathrobe who dies like a b**** and we don't learn anything meaningful about him before he does. The entire casino planet part was entirely unnecessary and reeks of the writers desperately wanting to have another eye-popping cantina scene like the last movie. Rose whines to Finn about child slavery so they save a bunch of animals and then leave the kids behind to stay as slaves for some reason.

Captain Phasma reveals she's not dead and approximately 3 minutes later, she's effortlessly cut down by Finn the janitor in hand-to-hand combat. Chewie is just kind of there the whole movie and never does anything. Luke is all sad because he failed as a Jedi and acts like a whiny jerk for most of the movie instead of the powerful Jedi he supposedly is. There's an absolutely horrendous scene where Leia gets sucked into space and magically flies back into the ship with the Force with absolutely no explanation as to how or why. You might as well have just shown her in space then blacked out the screen with the words "plot device" on it, then cut to Leia safe inside the ship because it would have had the exact same effect on me.

Then at the end, there's a generic recreation of the Battle of Hoth that I couldn't be bothered to care about. Also, for the entirety of the film, Kylo Ren is still an edgy, angry crybaby. Every line of dialogue in this film feels like it was written by freshman drama students and character development is completely nonexistent aside from Luke's change of heart and admittedly cool showdown with Kylo Ren, which aside from the throne room fight was the only part of this movie I actually enjoyed. The Last Jedi is an absolute mess and it certainly isn't a Star Wars movie, whatever it may be. I'm not blinded by nostalgia, I liked The Force Awakens. But this movie dashes any interest or development episode VII created for the Star Wars saga. I honestly have no interest in seeing where the story goes from here because the journey up to this point was so absurd and poorly executed. I'd honestly be satisfied if JJ Abrams revealed in Episode IX that everything that happened in TLJ was just Finn's fever dream while he was knocked out by Kylo Ren in Episode VII or something and then pick up from where TFA left off and actually stick to Abrams's original ideas.

I'm not in the category of people who think this movie is the worst film ever made and it wasn't quite as bad as I assumed it would be. But I felt lukewarm about it as I watched it and the more I marinate over it, the less appealing it becomes. I had the same experience with The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. And that's what this film is isn't it? It's the Crystal Skull of Star Wars. Let's forget it ever happened and never speak of it again.

Did you notice?
Holdo is a horrible woman, arrogant, haughty, borderline traitorous. Then they twist the plot harder than ever to make her pass as a selfless hero.
Rose is a courageous woman.
Leia is a wise and respected woman.
Rei is an invincible, ever-right, always victorious, perfect woman.

Luke is a cowardly, worthless man.
Poe is an irrational, stupid man who doesn't respect the woman above him.
Finn is a cowardly, ridiculous man.
Kylo is a hyperagressive, insecure, villainous man.
Snoke is a ridiculous villain who dies while he yells that he can't be beat. He's also a man, albeit a bit too toasted.
Hux is a ridiculous, pathetic villainous man.

Have you noticed the pattern? What message this movie is telling you?
Vagina good. Penis bad.

Thank God they were too stupid to even hide the message under a halfway decent plot, so this time even the braindead fanboys realised they were being served something debasing.

Disney wants you to cut off your penis, go do it.

If you create a sequel you cannot abandon the world your story is set in. This movie breaks rules set by the previous films, even the movie directly before it. Hyperspace jump destruction? This movie breaks rules set by the previous films, even the movie directly before it. Hyperspace jump destruction? Kylo that wants to become as cool as Darth Vader only to forget that totally to be like nah let the past die? Ryan Johnson wanted to make his own epic in a world he didn't care for.

Avoid. This movie is terrible.

Not good. Started to fall asleep. The story is not inspiring. Luke's character no longer exists. He is Luke in name only. Misses the heart and soul of what makes Star Wars great.

Horrible writing, cannon breaking powers, characters completely different from the OT. the movie is a mess from the beginning to the end, only to end with nothing done actually making any difference. The Mary Sue of the galaxy is back, now with even worst acting and ever MORE powerful! The 3 goes to visuals, Mark Hamill and admiral Ackbar. Expand

Never saw a more unfitting sequel in a movie saga ever. This is not Star Wars.
