A much farther attempt than Force Awakens attempted to conjure. Rian johnson does spend too much time with the resistance, and makes it a very throttled, back-n-forth film that never really allows you to connect or hone in to something particular. It wants to do so much. And to its quality, has great effect. But the storytelling became a bit of a juggle-act. On a space odyssey level, it delivers. But as a story following up a very teasing, simple first instalment, Last Jedi does too much and leaves little to look forward to. My complaints are simple, the storytelling wasn't honed in. Instead of making us feel through the trauma, tension of what was going on. Things just happened for thunderous cinematic effect, which they do. But as a whole, you walk away from Last Jedi more throttled than engrossed. And wishing it conveyed its ideas better, in a more honed-in way. As epic as it comes off, was it necessary? While we're left with shame and consequence. Expand

There are all sorts of cool battles and lasers going TCHEW! TCHEW! TCHEW! right by your ear. The diversity of the cast was welcome but there weren't enough aliens on the rebel side I thought. Or are there ever aliens on the dark side? I do not know. Seems like mostly humans. I think the people getting upset by this film are those who don't really understand the universe and maybe they just can't be pleased no matter what. I loved it and I will see it at least one more time in the theater possibly while wearing an oversized velvet sombrero (haven't decided on the color yet). Expand

I saw some compelling arguments recently to like VIII more than VII but I don't feel like rewatching:)

Stunning visuals, intricately woven together themes, the classic struggles between good and evil and finding your path to being a hero. This has everything that this long time fan wants out of a Star Wars film.

Even the jokes that were made were tired. This didn't really feel like a Star Wars movie; it was more like a Disney movie. The screenplay for this movie should have been tighter considering how long it is. Although the narrative was a shambles, the cinematography and visual effects were still fantastic, and the directing was passable. I'm not sure how somebody could give this a 1 (after seeing so many of those) without giving the visuals any credit. I give it a fair and honest 6 out of 10. Expand

Yes, the tone is a bit uneven and that part with Leia in outer space was unintentionally funny, but this installment has solid character development. The new characters were given their due, and Luke and Leia had some wonderful moments. Bottom line, it's not as good as the Force Awakens, but it's light years better than episodes 1-3 (and Return of the Jedi). Expand

The film that ended up ruining Star Wars, Luke Skywalker, the Jedi and a massive movie franchise. Rian Johnson must be kept away from any further Star Wars projects. Kathleen Kennedy's trust in this man was ill placed.

Nevertheless, as I said before the Kylo Ren-Rey storyline works for me and its also a pretty stunning film to look at. I also admit that the 150 minutes flew by.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last Jedi incorporates the force lore of the past and expands on it. Luke is shown as a real person with faults to overcome and Mark Hamil acts it well!
Kylo and Rey’s connection is amazing and a great addition. Together they would have been a force to reckon with, but this is Star Wars and it wasn’t meant to be … yet!
Finn, Poe, and Rose find their place in the resistance and in the Galaxy far, far away.
The Last Jedi is my favorite Star Wars film.

Would probably not watch again, but it could be a lot worse.

Many of the critics are seemingly jubilant to see modern political points being touched on in a Star Wars movie, and thus it is championed as “brave” and “daring”, but don’t let that fool you; this film is as hollow as it is politically pandering. It may forever be remembered as the film that ultimately killed the sequel franchise, as JJ Abrams was left to pick up the pieces and then jam them together in hopeful desperation that they might stick. Whether it truly did or not is ultimately contingent on the eyes of the beholder. Expand

The Force Awakens is it. This though... this ain't it. It has a completely useless side story with Finn and Rose, essentially severing anything interesting that could have happened with Finn's character. Poe gets cucked by a purple haired space lady who was frankly just a d!ckhead general for not actively sharing her plan with everyone else. Phasma...died, so... thanks for doing absolutely nothing with her. Rey, Kylo and Luke were pretty interesting, but they only consisted of like, 1/3 the movie. I was initially on board with the idea of "Subverting Expectations", but not when literally every subplot set up in TFA gets "Subverted" into a dead end. Expand

Everything about them in this movie is perfect to me. I loved how Luke walks a thin line between good and evil. Grey area is something you don't see in Star Wars and it was great so that being the link between Kylo and Rey was something that I thought was very interesting. The other part of the film is complete rubbish. It felt like they didn't know what to do with other characters. The whole casino sequence and everything that those characters were doing felt like a silly distraction. Expand

There is a sense of not caring during this first bit of the film where both the character interactions and plot delivery are performed in a lazy, sometimes disgraceful, manner. Thankfully, it's a huge relief that two thirds of the film deliver what needed to be delivered from the continuing, beloved franchise: familiar faces, action, unpredictable plot twists, exploitation of character strengths and weaknesses, and even moments that will quicken your pulse and make you sit at the edge of your seat. The film performs just well enough for us to wait in anticipation for the next episode. Overall, "The Last Jedi" is a solid entry and nothing more. Special kudos to Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver for getting most comfortable as their characters since the last episode. On that note, continue to rest in peace Carrie Fisher. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ok, my rant back then was awful. I complained about the film, but then I went off about users needing their voices to be heard, and while that would fit for Rotten Tomatoes, it wouldn't fit here exactly. Let me redo this.
The movie is filled with awful comedy. The jokes get in the way, are awkward, and just drag on. The Porgs are also annoying and unnecessary.
Finn, Poe, BB-8, Phasma, Hux, and the other side characters are mistreated and don't really do anything. And because they barely interact with Rey and Kylo, they come off as unnecessary filler. The Canto Bight part was irritating and long, and Holdo's stupidity was painful to sit through.
I also hated how main plots from TFA were concluded, like the character of Snoke, Finn and Phasma's rivalry, Rey's parents being nobodies, Rey possibly joining the dark side, Kylo posibly joining the light side, etc. With all of those being finished, this trilogy basically became a rip off of the original trilogy. TFA was already so similar to A New Hope, and this just became Empire Strikes Back. A character trains to be a Jedi and learns more about themselves, people need help fighting the bad guys so some of them go to a fancy planet for help, main characters have a personal feud and try to convince the other one to join their side, etc.

I did like the story between Rey, Luke, and Kylo. That kept me interested in what was going to happen next. But this film is bogged down by the new direction and writing.
"EPISODE IX WILL PROBABLY KILL CHEWBACCA, HAVE BAD JOKES, AND WILL BE A RIPOFF OF RETURN OF THE JEDI!"
Me from the future: I got 2 out of 3 of those right. Chewbacca was nearly killed, but Leia took his place instead.
So, 3/10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have to say: I was disappointed. This movie manages to stand a bit more on its own than The Force Awakens or Rogue One, but it still riffs pretty heavily on the old trilogy's story beats, and is a mixed bag in terms of characters, story choices, and tone. That last part might be the biggest problem. It pulls a Marvel at times and undercuts serious or important moments with ill-timed humor. The movie does little to develop Finn despite plenty of screen time, and Captain Phasma and Snoke are as lame as ever. Good riddance to both. Kylo Ren is still a compelling villain, and his and Rey's story is the highlight. I think Johnson missed the mark on the character of Luke pretty significantly, making him inconsistent with who he became after ROTJ, and forcing him to arbitrarily backpedal as a character, just to bring him back toward heroism in the end so the movie can pretend he has a story arc. The Last Jedi is less slavish in its callbacks to previous movies than The Force Awakens was, but what this lays bare is that the new stuff has comparatively little to offer, from the world building to the young male leads, to the incredibly corny new character Rose, to the action (awesome throne room fight aside). The movie's latter sections get slightly more interesting than its borderline-boring first half, but I had hoped to be much more impressed by Rian Johnson's take on the Star Wars galaxy than this. Sometimes I feel DisneyStar Wars: Episode VIII seems more like a culmination of all the reasons what is wrong with movies nowadays. A beloved, renowned franchise like Star Wars goes in the hands of a big company which is all into secularism. Sometimes I feel Disney movies are not movies. They are festivals. They celebrate diversity. And the worst part is that Disney, the religion which is celebrating this festival, doesn't take very kindly of the "infidels". As a result they are more concerned about the movie doing good in China and Africa than actually telling a good story. They can imagine little girls from Middle East play with Rey Palpatine dolls and porg/fathier stuffed toys, but not giving the fans what they have been asking for all these years.
One thing I really like about this movie is that it is able to deliver the needed impact using its CGI. The way they used the FTL to tear right across the enemy ships was so cool. But yeah, that's the only one thing I like about the movie. To show that one scene they ruined the whole concept of FTL travelling. Luke Skywalker lives between adorable Porgs, but he's only Luke Skywalker for the namesake. He doesn't do anything that makes us feel that he's important to the story. Heck, literally his role in the movie is that he dies!
This is exactly what's wrong with movies today. First they take a popular franchise that doesn't make movies anymore, or has a lot of books/games/TV shows. Then they get the fans hyped to make them realise they are about to make something big for them. In order to do this they sell their merchandise because they know the gullible fans will be absolutely ready to lap it all up. After that they will throw in some secularism - make a white protagonist, a black sidekick, an Asian man/woman who will help them, someone who is being oppressed because there's absolutely no other way a hero can be a hero if he doesn't speak for someone's rights. An important character should also be there who will do nothing other than fan service. An absolutely meaningless plot twist will also do some good. With all that done, just add a big CGI fight and get over with it.
So in conclusion, Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi is not a movie. It's a fan service. This wouldn't have been a problem if it DID fan service and not become one. We had watched this movie for a plot about Jedi fighting the Sith, not for seeing Finn free some fathiers. The movie is set a long, long ago in a galaxy far, far away. So all this SJW stuff doesn't make any sense.

Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My favorite of the sequel trilogy... it isn't the best of course and the it is a bit of a mess. Rian Johnson's take on Star Wars was an interesting one. The characters are mostly okay, but Vice-Admiral Holdo was such a **** that assumed she knew who Poe was just by one event made me want to stab her. Rose Tico was a character I liked at first, but then I realized she didn't save the slave kids on Canto Bight and instead only freed the animals. Why didn't Finn do anything about the enslaved kids? Finn feels like a guy who would have freed them, considering his background. However, though some scenes don't make scientific sense, it's still Star Wars and it was fun for me to watch. General Hux is a stupid sand bag though. I liked Kylo Ren and his scene where he destroyed the mask. Adam Driver portrays Kylo very well and Kylo's dialogue always feel good to me. The Rise of Skywalker having Kylo Ren have his mask again didn't make sense to me because in this movie he makes a huge point that he outgrew it. Anyway, Luke Skywalker... I was fine with how he was in the movie and I thought it made sense. Mark Hamill did an amazing job and his scene with Yoda made me happy. I know the fight scenes weren't super good, but I still really liked them. I wish more questions were answered in this movie, but it was what it was. I liked it. Expand

ItHaving rewatched the entire saga recently, this "The Last Jedi"'s viewing was better than its first at the pictures, strangely enough. It has the best cinematography of its trilogy - by far!, and delves into some darker themes as well. It was refreshing to see 'real' peril and not having a typical space battle resolve all problems. The humor works 4x out of 10 for me, so I guess that's not too bad for a contemporay Disney film... Some 'unpredictable' moments really felt original and in some cases - I thought were - exhilirating. Here also lie some of the best moments that COULD HAVE BEEN in the Star Wars saga. However, these 'unpredictable' moments are, ultimately, also its biggest let-down. At a certain point, it just tries WAY too much and just feels boring, cheesy and monotenous. All these moments are given more importance than the characters, so by the end, I just stopped caring really. It undermines its own storyline. The whole Finn plot was totally useless and you really feel it with its 2h30 run time. I, personally, think its the best of its trilogy as it felt original and - somehow - that's what this trilogy lacked the most. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As a Star Wars fan, I really wanted to like this movie. But I didn't. While it has its moments, it's far from the quality film we deserve. I have always maintained that I love all Star Wars movies equally and think they all deserve a place in the series. I love the original trilogy, I love the prequels, and I even really loved The Force Awakens. Which is why this movie was such a disappointment.

This movie doesn't "feel" like Star Wars. Rogue One didn't really "feel" like Star Wars either, but in a different way. Rogue One was different, but still good. The Last Jedi feels like a high-quality Star Wars fan fiction that the interns drafted up while all the talented Star Wars writers were out to lunch. From the very outset, we're given an opener with tons of cheese that I guess was supposed to make the kids laugh because Disney mandated it. And the entire film is full of forced one-liners and humor that falls flat. Then there's Kathleen Kennedy's lovely forced diversity. Every character in the Resistance is either a woman, a racial minority, or often both. Laura Dern plays an unlikable moron with purple hair and Rose Tico is completely unnecessary to the film. One of the characters even has an annoying speech impediment.

Nobody cares about this kind of stuff in movies, and it's especially annoying considering it came at the cost of quality. Speaking of which, this movie is all over the place. There are a handful of good scenes and not much else. I forgave Rey's effortless use of the Force in Episode VII because it had just awakened in her and was so powerful, even Snoke felt it. But Rey doesn't even have much of a personality in TLJ and overcomes every dumb obstacle with minimal effort. Speaking of Snoke, he's not a mysterious dark presence anymore, he's a wrinkled old man in a hideous bathrobe who dies like a b**** and we don't learn anything meaningful about him before he does. The entire casino planet part was entirely unnecessary and reeks of the writers desperately wanting to have another eye-popping cantina scene like the last movie. Rose whines to Finn about child slavery so they save a bunch of animals and then leave the kids behind to stay as slaves for some reason.

Captain Phasma reveals she's not dead and approximately 3 minutes later, she's effortlessly cut down by Finn the janitor in hand-to-hand combat. Chewie is just kind of there the whole movie and never does anything. Luke is all sad because he failed as a Jedi and acts like a whiny jerk for most of the movie instead of the powerful Jedi he supposedly is. There's an absolutely horrendous scene where Leia gets sucked into space and magically flies back into the ship with the Force with absolutely no explanation as to how or why. You might as well have just shown her in space then blacked out the screen with the words "plot device" on it, then cut to Leia safe inside the ship because it would have had the exact same effect on me.

Then at the end, there's a generic recreation of the Battle of Hoth that I couldn't be bothered to care about. Also, for the entirety of the film, Kylo Ren is still an edgy, angry crybaby. Every line of dialogue in this film feels like it was written by freshman drama students and character development is completely nonexistent aside from Luke's change of heart and admittedly cool showdown with Kylo Ren, which aside from the throne room fight was the only part of this movie I actually enjoyed. The Last Jedi is an absolute mess and it certainly isn't a Star Wars movie, whatever it may be. I'm not blinded by nostalgia, I liked The Force Awakens. But this movie dashes any interest or development episode VII created for the Star Wars saga. I honestly have no interest in seeing where the story goes from here because the journey up to this point was so absurd and poorly executed. I'd honestly be satisfied if JJ Abrams revealed in Episode IX that everything that happened in TLJ was just Finn's fever dream while he was knocked out by Kylo Ren in Episode VII or something and then pick up from where TFA left off and actually stick to Abrams's original ideas.

I'm not in the category of people who think this movie is the worst film ever made and it wasn't quite as bad as I assumed it would be. But I felt lukewarm about it as I watched it and the more I marinate over it, the less appealing it becomes. I had the same experience with The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. And that's what this film is isn't it? It's the Crystal Skull of Star Wars. Let's forget it ever happened and never speak of it again.

Negatives: Absolutely throws away the legacy of Luke Skywalker and ruins the progression of the force users that was built in the previous 7 films.

Negatives: Absolutely throws away the legacy of Luke Skywalker and ruins the progression of the force users that was built in the previous 7 films. Fight choreography can be wonky. The sequel trilogy characters (Rey, Finn, Poe and others) either have 0 character development or a character arc that does not fit their roles. Also ruins every potentially good villain in the sequel trilogy (Snoke, Phasma, Knights of Ren, Kylo, Hux). Overall, while the film can be entertaining at times, the film fails to progress character arcs effectively and does not synergize well with any past Star Wars media.

Not the predictable story rehash we got with Episode 7. Some things are somewhat dumb slapstick and quite a few protagonists will definitely not be making Episode 9, but overall it's quite surprising and refreshing movie. Some scenes still give a fan the "Now where have we seen this before?" feeling but I guess it wouldn't be Star Wars if it didn't. There are some elements that really sort of break the "logic" of Star Wars universe. If you take SW seriously and not as entertainment you might be offended by what Disney did with this movie. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last Jedi is not as good, or as bad, as it might've been. It's the best Star Wars movie visually. There are several great action sequences. However, there are plenty of problems. It doesn't really feel like a sequel to The Force Awakens. Snoke, who is introudced as a mysterious figure in Force Awakens, is completely wasted. Luke Skywalker, the hero of the original films, is virtually unrecognizable based on his behavior in this movie. Rey, the protagonist, is unrelatable; she's seemingly good at everything. The new characters are shallow and uninteresting (mainly Rose). The flying Leia scene was laughable. There are many more nonsensical plot details in this movie. This movie nearly killed my interest in Star Wars Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I think I can sum up my feelings about this movie as: entertained, but very disappointed. It is truly an entertaining spectacle: the visuals and the musical score are great. All fun and worth my money if this were a generic sci-fi flick. But this movie fails horribly as a Star Wars movie. The Last Jedi somehow pulls off an incredible feat by conflicting not only with the original 6 movies, but also The Force Awakens, which concludes 35 seconds before this movie begins. Having different writers undoing what the previous movies set up is not a formula for success. The Good: I was absolutely annoyed with Disney's decision to reboot Episode 4 and call it Episode 7. I give TLJ some credit for not being an obvious rip off of Episode 5, but they narrowly straddled that line. Some scenes are obviously lifted from ESB but in different order. Particularly the Speeder v AT-AT battle on the white, desolate planet to protect the shielded base. You know the one. Kylo Ren was very well written; as a matter of fact, he’s the only character they developed in this movie. I also felt like the music was kicked into high gear this time around. My only complaint was that it wasn't new music, just old scores we've heard before. The movie also had some interesting character designs, such as the new imperial guard with their lightsaber-resistant armor. The new First order ships were interesting and the hyperspace ramming scene was one of the coolest things I'd ever seen in Star Wars. But the integrity of the Star Wars universe can't be sacrificed for the sake of the spectacle and this movie is very, very guilty of this.

The Bad: there are many places where TLJ misses the mark, and sometimes undoes what was established in movies prior. Disney’s fingerprints are all over this because there were so many bad attempts at humor, even in serious scenes. I can’t believe there was a 'your mom' joke - prank call in Star Wars.. and it was right before a big space battle. Wow. Finn and Rose are completely useless and their subplot drags the movie on for an extra 45 minutes. Going back to the hyperspace ramming scene, it just completely changes the game for how Star Wars battles should take place. Star Destroyer-sized ships and above should be sitting ducks for hyperspace kamikaze. Even the Death Stars. As cool as it looked, I'd rather they'd never included it. The writers also took EXTREME liberties in their portrayal of Luke. The way he behaves in this movie, you'd think you were watching a deranged clone or homeless Mark Hamill. I don't love Episode 7, but it established the good and bad guys were looking for Luke because he's the key to saving the galaxy. The opening crawl says as much! But not only did Luke not want to be found (why was there a map??), he is depressed, jaded and overall isn't in character until Rey yells at him. I don't understand how Luke can redeem the most feared tyrant in the galaxy, Vader, but fantasizes about killing his own nephew in his sleep before he's ever done anything wrong. That completely erased the conclusion of Luke’s evolution from Eps 4-6. That's no Luke Skywalker. That is complete shenanigans. Worse so, hardly any of the questions left open from TFA are followed. Rian Johnson faked the audience out by waving off the mysteries (and plot holes) JJ Abrams created in TFA. But by doing so, he left a void of backstory surrounding nearly everything we've seen on screen since TFA. Very poorly done. Rey's mysterious parents and missing last name? None of it mattered -- she's simply Jedi Jesus for no reason. Snoke, the man who turned the galaxy upside down and corrupted Ben Solo? Dead within the first half of the movie. Just destroyed Death Star #3? Doesn't matter, there’s still an infinite First Order fleet and the Resistance is even weaker than before, somehow. In fact, they STILL haven't bothered explaining the Resistance/F.O. conflict at all. They eventually go back to saying "rebels" in this movie, so I really have no idea what's going on. How can I enjoy this trilogy if I can't follow along?

So all in all, The Last Jedi improves a bit on the originality side of things, but barely. It's ESB with the scenes moved around. I was certainly entertained. But the writers failed to fit this movie in with the greater Star Wars continuity. Narration was sacrificed for spectacle. Old characters and their relationships have been sacrificed to prop up new characters. Space battles from past movies have been completely rendered useless since we could have hyperspace rammed things this whole time. I just don't recognize this new brand of Star Wars. I think it is entirely meant for new fans only, because clearly no attention is being paid to the source material. I expect more writer shenanigans when the reins go back to JJ for episode 9, so more time will be spent answering/obfuscating things introduced in this movie instead of telling a NEW story. This may be where I finally get off the Disney Star Wars train.

The movie nobody online can be civil to each other about. People love it, people hate it, and they think there is no in between. Well, there is. I am mixed with this movie. It has some great moments and it has some terrible moments. For the great, the movie is visually spectacular, exciting, exceptionally acted, well-directed, emotional and has an amazing score from John Williams. Now, for the terrible, the whole scene on Canto Bight with Finn and Rose was dumb and heavy-handed in its political message. Also, as a follow-up to The Force Awakens, a movie I still really like, it felt like Rian was trying to go off a blank slate and disregard everything that happened in that movie. Also, Luke's character was only semi-butchered; thankfully he does have an arch in this movie. But, overall, I am in the middle with this movie. But, that's ok because I have a right to my opinion, which the internet seems to be ignorant to that fact. Please be civil to others' opinions and don't go saying awful things to the actors just because you were dissatisfied with the character they played. That is a **** thing to do. So yeah. I give this movie a solid C+. I don't hate it, but it's not that great either. Expand

This is a solid 6/10 film, not without its flaws but with a few interesting surprises. It has good atmosphere and flow. Step in the right direction.

I did, however, enjoy the last couple of entries (the Force Awakens and Rogue One) enough to the point of anxiously anticipating this effort. I have to say though I was a little disappointed. The movie suffered from overkill resorting to the same themes over and over again. I often wondered why Mark Hamil never achieved the career accomplishments of his costars. Now I remember. He's not a great actor. There were attempts at humor that I thought was inappropriate as well. Without giving away spoilers it wasn't a total bust. There was plenty of action and a few poignant moments but I have to say overall, this one missed the mark. Expand

Offering up challenging developments at every turn that mostly develop the decades-long franchise in a creative and fresh direction. And, though some of the decisions may be a bit more difficult to swallow than others, the sentiment to mix things up after 40 years of lore is definitely admirable. It also helps that the set pieces and lightsaber battles are all on point, and the fact that the characters and performances are all in line is also a plus. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My viewing of The Last Jedi was constantly polluted by cringe. It could have been a great movie. Empire was my favorite installment of the Star Wars saga. The second film in a trilogy is where things can get weird and norms can be broken. I can see that this was Johnson's intention, but the film feels cramped and forced. Last Jedi felt like an indie movie stuffed into blockbuster pacing, which just doesn't match up. I enjoyed the subtlety of Ridley's story line, but the moral messaging of the Finn/Rose plot and the Po/Holdo plot were so beat-you-over-the-head straight forward that I had troubles taking them seriously. Besides, I'm not sure I love the message of Holdo. I know that it was meant to read as "trust women," which I will always get behind, but it read more as "blindly follow orders and complacently accept a lack of transparency." It feels so militaristic, running against the pro-democratic messaging of the entire Saga. The dialogue in Star Wars has always been a little odd, but, other than Driver and Ridley, the cast of Last Jedi couldn't pull it off like Fischer, Hamill or Ford. If I ever hear "master codebreaker" again, I will have a psychotic episode. The humor of the movie got laughs from disinterested parents brought to the theater by their kids, but was nothing more than cringey gags. I missed the sarcasm and blissful camp of the original trilogy. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Honestly I am writing this "review" just to clear my head and get back to my normal life. I am literally obsessing on how mixed I feel toward this movie. I can't concentrate. So here's my pros and cons list. I will probably update. (again, just to keep my head clear)

Pros:
-Gorgeous cinematography
-Fantastic action sequences
-Interesting dynamic between Kylo and Rey
-Interesting and much needed "end" to the traditional jedi way
-Great acting by Mark, Carrie, and most of the other cast members
-Incredible scene in Snoke's throne room (yes, all of it)
-Kylo is a fascinating villain
-Interesting focus on the "grey" areas between the black and white
-Force ghost Yoda
-Mostly funny humor
-Overall very fun and interesting to watch

Cons:
-Continuity from previous episodes is neglected
-Slightly off-putting meta-narrative about "forgetting the past"
-Luke's character arc is questionable at best
-Snoke is a throwaway villain with no backstory after being built up in Ep. VII
-Captain Phasma is another throwaway villain with a stupid death
-A couple plot-holes (Ex: Luke goes into exile, but they found a map?)
-Many moments that are just strange or written poorly
-Finn and Rose subplot is literally pointless, romance is forced and cringe-worthy
-Finn gets no character development
-The casino subplot could have been avoided if Holdo hadn't been a b**ch to Poe
-Poe came off as an idiot
-Excessive CGI, especially in the casino
-Luke's final battle with Kylo was neat, but overall disappointing

In conclusion, I can safely say that this movie is divisive for fans. While most tend to choose one extreme, I myself am torn. I had fun watching the movie, and am generally interested in the story. That said, I can't ignore the problems like some fans.

I think TFA was a good movie – but it wasn't very original.

Rian Johnson did the only right thing but delivering a story that brings the franchise forward – and not by repeating it.

We already know the original trilogy, guys – let the past die. kill it if you have to!

Not much backstory for Luke other than his failure with Kylo. Still not clear how the images shown in TFA when Rey finds Luke/Anakin's lightsaber coincides with Luke's telling of teaching/failure Ben Solo. Overall a strange twist on hyperspace rules were introduced, expect books and comics to clean that up, as hyperspace kamikaze should be able to eliminate any fleet or death star per TLJ new rules. Makes me think Disney paid off these critics. The Last Jedi is a very meh kind of Star Wars film. There are a lot o flaws. I respect Rian Johnson's decision to take risks but there are a couple cornerstone pieces with the franchise he tampered with too much. Turning Luke into a hermit was extremely disappointing. He made Luke Skywalker the most beloved hero in Star Wars not likeable in this film and that's an insult. He should have looked at what JJ Abrams did with Han Solo and followed his strategy, to bring back the character and make him feel like the one we all remember. Rose, DJ, and Admiral Holdo's character development is god awful, it's almost as if we are supposed to hate them from the start but instead like them. The Canto Bight scene gets the plot carried away. Leia's drifting through space with the force is very strange. The concept of hyperspacing a ship into Snoke's ship is also not Star Wars. although, this film does have strong moments, the opening scene action is great, Rey and Kylo dueling together in Snoke's chamber, and thr final battle scene at Crait. The ending was good too with everyone reuniting on the millennium falcon. This is probably the best visual start wars movie made too it looks very good. Overall this movie is just okay, the critics are giving this too high of a score and some of the users feelings are a little too hurt about what they did with Luke Skywalker. Not one of the better Star Wars, but I do like it better than episodes 1 and 2 of the prequels because it has more action and feels more like a Star Wars film. Here's to hoping JJ Abrams can finish the sequel trilogy off with a bang with episode 9 The Rise of Skywalker. Expand

The story is a 5. Political correctness is a 3. Visually it is a 6. Nostalgia is a 6 for being there, and a 3 for being bastardized.

It is not as cringy as I expected. I was pretty sure I would be giving it a 3 instead of a 4 based on what I had heard. I certainly wouldn't pay money to watch any of these new Disney or Marvel movies. It was tempting to give it a zero because the Star Wars franchise was obviously hijacked to push a politically correct agenda, but I'm reviewing the movie--not the intentions.

Pros:

Nothing really stands out as a pro other than some aspects of the brief appearance by Yoda and some aspects of Luke's actions at the end.

Cons:

The bad guys are lead by men, and the good guys are led by women.
The bad guys are white, and the good guys are diverse.
The women leaders are military leaders.
Yet another movie that feels it must show us role models of women leading other women in a healthy manor in order to help real women overcome their natural tendency to not get along with each other ... while omitting such relationships and role models for men.
The men are like kids and the women are like wise mothers.
The men are usually wrong and unstable.
Prominently shows that even the main two good men still don't respect women enough.
Rey is a Mary Sue as always (though not as much of a Mary Sue as in The Force Awakens).
Rey continues to have zero personality.
Rey and most of the other characters show zero signs of having a sexuality.
The token black guy is a coward again ... trying to run away ... again.
One of the women sacrificed her life to stop one of the men from sacrificing his life just as he was seconds away from saving all of them ... because that wasn't his call ... but apparently it was her call?
One of the women leaders instantly and conveniently developed the ability to fly through space without a ship or even a suit, which seemed as dumb as it sounds.

The movie kept doing stupid unexpected things for no apparent reason other than to be unpredictable. We are supposed to believe that the lady admiral who reminds us of a new-age book store clerk is so strategically brilliant that she thought of a really obvious new way to use hyperspace that no one in this universe ever thought of before, which is just asinine, but which is doubly asinine because no characters could have thought of it before because it broke the rules of how hyperspace works in Star Wars and in the entire sci-fi genre.

I’m a fanboy, so let me get that out of the way. The first time I saw the film, I was disappointed - kind of ‘meh’ on it, not as militantly anti-TLJ as many are, but still underwhelmed. The first time I saw the film, I was disappointed - kind of ‘meh’ on it, not as militantly anti-TLJ as many are, but still underwhelmed. A second viewing (this time with a 7 year-old in tow) changed my view somewhat. Here are the positives: it doesn’t go the way you think, the cinematography is amazing, it’s visually arresting (even Snoke looked great, and I’m a real tough sell on pure CGI stuff...I hated Tarkin and young Leia in Rogue One), and there are some really great, iconic moments. Yes, the story may be a little overstuffed with characters and subplots; yeah, definitely some jerking around with the lore, and the tone wobbles a bit in places. But like the Force doesn’t belong to the Jedi, Star Wars doesn’t belong to me, it belongs to my kid now...and he liked it better than TFA. I think anyone saying it’s worse than the prequels is just being hyperbolic. The Phantom Menace I very nearly walked out on, and the subsequent films didn’t improve much upon that piece of bantha poodoo. The Last Jedi is not what critics have made of it, for sure, but nowhere near deserving of 0s and 1s. The truth is, as ever, somewhere in the middle. Expand

Throw in every iconic element of the original Star Wars (including the basic plot), add some really bad acting (Mark Hamill) and, hopefully, The Last Jedi will be the last Star Wars movie connected to anything from its past.

Directing - F.
Felt like the movie was directed by a 10 year old kid who has ADD.

Acting - C.
Some characters are new and don't do anything and/or what is there purpose. Acting is nothing good - nothing bad just average.

Editing - F.
The movie should have ended at least 15-20 minutes earlier if not more. The pace of this movie is terrible.

Musical Score - B.
Keeps with the tradition of previous Star Wars films.

Special Effects - A.
Great blend of CGI with practical effects. Some of the best in a movie. Along with costume design and make-up.

Cinematography/Production Design - A.
Well done. Looks clean and a well made film.

Overall Score - 4.3/10
Too bad the production, Special Effects, Musical Score, Costume Design and Make-up are not the heart and soul of a movie. In those categories; some of the best ever for a movie. However, it lacks a comprehensive and organize story, new characters one may not care about; along with no character development, poor directing and bad editing; that in the end makes this the worst Star Wars film to date.

This movie doesn't feel like star wars for one thing. Also along with about three big mistakes and five small mistakes it just makes this movie a lot worse than it could have been. It's not worth watching and just underwhelming.

I was sitting there at the cinema like “Is this a main line movie, or a saturday morning cartoon spinoff?”. Overall, it can be either as good or as bad as you like depending on what aspects of cinema you value the most.
At the very least I found it entertaining by the end, but it was still a huge disappointment compared to The Force Awakens, which in itself wasn't much to write home about.
It pains me to say this, but The Last Jedi was average, and I'm concerned as to how the final episode might attempt to fix the many holes created by this movie.

On top of that the directors attitude outside of the movie is honestly just awful, you can deride the fans all you want for their behaviour but at the end of the day Rian is supposed to be the professional and he doesn't act like it. Clearly the man can't write, he should stick to his skills as a cinematographer instead as he is very good in that regard. Expand

What could go(Originally written on 12/17/17) I was ecstatic about seeing this film. It had amazing trailers and an incredible director leading the project, Rian Johnson, who made a Sci-Fi film back in 2012 called Looper, which I loved. What could go wrong? This film centers around the Resistance, which is somehow struggling after they just destroyed the First Order’s main base in the previous movie. The whole movie is about the Resistance attempting to escape the grasp of the first order while they hunt them down with their “merciless fleet” and that they need Luke Skywalker to help them. Before I rip this movie to shreds, let’s talk about the positives. One positive that I can say with absolute certainty is how great the special effects are. This movie has some of the best space battle and ground battle sequences of all the Star Wars movies. They are masterfully shot, edited, and designed. The CGI is very believable here and is the best of all of the movies. The acting is also very commendable. Mark Hamill gives his best performance as Luke Skywalker out of all of the movies and Daisy Ridley also gives a very committed and emotional performance as Rey. The real show stealer, however, is Adam Driver as Kylo Ren, which really surprised me. I wasn’t sure about him as the main villain in The Force Awakens, but here he has completely sold me. His transition from emo wannabe Darth Vader to a damaged, hate-filled and sinister man was amazing and he has convinced me that he can be a very strong main villain. His scenes with Rey are some of the best scenes in the movie. Now, the part I’ve been looking forward to the least, are the things about this movie that utterly angered me the most. There are a lot of plot holes in this movie, but the one that angered me the most basically is the backbone of the movie and is the only reason the events in this movie are even taking place. I don’t consider this a spoiler since it is established early on in the film. This plot hole can be summed up into three words, “out of range.” The only reason the First Order fleet isn’t able to destroy the Resistance ship is because they are too far away from it to shoot at it without hitting their shields. Are… are you serious? You have a whole fleet at your disposal, with thousands of tie fighters and other ships, and you can’t catch one ship that is running low on fuel and is completely vulnerable to attack? Just send a bunch of tie fighters out to it, or do a small light-speed jump to get right behind its ass and then blow it to kingdom come, or call in some of your dreadnots that you claim are “fleet-killers.” The Resistance in the beginning of the movie killed “a” dreadnought, not “the” dreadnought. Another downfall of this movie is the pacing. It is holy inconsistent. The first half of this movie feels like it was put together and edited by an unpaid intern. Nothing connects or flows together well at all. It reminded me of Batman V. Superman, and that’s never good. In fact, the first half of this movie besides the first action sequence is god awful in general. The dialogue is bad, the writing is bad, the directing is bad, and the pacing, like I said, is all over the place. The rest of my complaints delve into spoiler territory, so I am warning you. **********SPOILER WARNING********** A scene that infuriated, and continues to infuriate me, is a scene involving Princess Leia using the force in a very stupid and contrived way. In this scene, Kylo Ren is about to kill his mother, Princess Leia, but decides not to. Instead, two tie fighters converge on either side of him and blast Leia into space, where she proceeds to do one of the most ridiculous things I have ever seen in a Star Wars movie. In the middle of space, with no suit or oxygen mask or anything of the sort, she magically flies back to the ship using the force and she survives. What….the...f*** is all I can say. Possibly one of the worst sub-plots in Star Wars history also exists in this movie. The sub-plot involves Finn and a woman named Rose who go to a Casino on another world to find a code breaker who will help disable the First Order’s trackers so their ship can jump to lightspeed and escape the First Order without them tracking the Resistance. The whole sub-plot, however, is completely inconsequential to the events of the movie and doesn’t even need to exist. This is because the Resistance chooses to go with the Vice-Admiral’s plan anyways. This was about 30 minutes wasted of an already overly long runtime of 2 hours and 32 minutes. Although there is a lot that angers me about this movie, there is also a lot that I love about this movie, ie. the dynamic between Kylo and Rey, all of the scenes with Luke, Luke’s beautiful death, the amazing special effects, and the well done action sequences. Overall, though, this movie is incredibly disappointing and I am going to give Star Wars: The Last Jedi a 4/10 Expand

This review is probably going to get shuffled into the other reviews, but for those reading, this movie is not good. Lets start with the positive; the visuals. This movie has some of the best visuals of the Star Wars franchise, and it is probably one of the best looking movies of all time. But the rest of the film is not very good. The characters have changed for the worse, it is riddled with plot holes and things that don't make sense, and it is full of awkward moments as this film desperately wants to be Marvel. This film is mostly harmless, but they really messed up the characters in this one, especially Luke. This kinda breaks continuity with the rest of the franchise. This is not a good movie, it destroyed the Star Wars franchise, and there is little chance of redemption from Episode IX. Expand
