This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The special effects were great, cinematography was good and the acting was excellent. I like the new characters and thought what I learned of them was enough for this episode.

I've been a Star Wars fan since I saw the movie in '77 I was 7. I'm probably one of the few people in the world that loved the prequels (knew it wasn't going to be an action-based movie), and I walked into this movie with no expectations.

I knew the expanded universe was off the table, and expected an entirely different story. If the Force Awakens was a reboot, I would have loved it to death. But, it's not; it's the seventh chapter in the series.

I've never had a problem with the suspension of disbelief, until this movie. As soon as I saw Rey on the Tatooine clone I knew she was the new jedi. Because she looks a lot like Padme, I assumed she was Luke's daughter, which was revealed in her last flashback. It appears that the Janitor storm trooper will be another jedi given enough time as he can magically use the lightsaber. Ben is a Revanite knockoff like Sidious was supposed to be, wearing the Vader/Anakin/Revan gear with Revan's upgraded mask.

Han dies, which wasn't a shock as Ford always hated the idea of doing more movies. I'm sure Luke will die in the next movie as Hamill has been more bitter about the movies than Ford was. Fisher will probably stay on as long as she can because of $.

The acorn looking chick is the new yoda, Finn and Rey the new love interest, and as always the 3rd Reich can't make a death star without the obvious back door clause cause evil.

I can honestly go with all of that. Seriously. Fine. Whatever. It's Star Wars not Hamlet. I'm not expecting a masterpiece after 38 years.

But it's still A New Hope mixed with Empire, and I've seen those movies at least 100 times since their launch. I just wanted new.

I don't want a nostalgia piece. Chapters 3-6 were great for their time, but life marches on. Throwing out the expanded universe opened the door to a whole new universe, and Lucas bowing out removed the need to work through his WWII therapy.

It's a marketing masterpiece, and a fun Star Wars film with great new characters that I love. But the story is tired and played out. I honestly hope the next once amps up the story is veers away from the predictable setup they've laid at out feet.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. 1. The plot is just a mix of the old trilogy, it doesn't have anything new to offer, each place we visit, almost each scene like a scene in the classic star wars bar or "disable the shields" or even bigger death star — we've seen it all in previous episodes. At least new trilogy had courage to introduce us to new planets and cultures (I mean come on Jakku is just a copy of Tattoine).
2. Lazy writing. There is no intrigue to that film, it almost like in the middle I already knew what would happen next, and that moment when Kylo Ren kills Solo feels like it there just because they needed some big moment.
3. Light saber battles. So we have Kylo Ren who was trained by Luke, and who's extremly talented with the force (we see him use it multiple times and showing even more power than Darth extremely) and he is being challenged by a former stromtrooper who even doesn't know how to handle lightsaber and the defeated by the girl who was never trained in the ways of the force. WHAT IS THAT? Remember how Luke who had some training from Obi Van lost to Vader? And then he had to had even more training from Yoda to challenge him? But no, in this film they just know how to use the force out of nowhere apparently.

I'm giving 5 only because x-wing battles were cool and first part of the movie felt right.

Visually ok, but disappointing with both the acting and the choppy scenes. I seem to be one of the very few people who actually dis-liked this film.
The concept of the Finn character needs much more explanation than someone who turns rogue in the space of ten minutes!
The acting is so wooden it's quite annoying, I didn't make it to the end of the film I was totally annoyed with the cheesy one liners and the over acting. Even from the established actors Harrison etc were very poor, the scenes with Solo & Leia were cringe worthy and looked so staged it was quite terrible.
this film lacked any depth for me, it was far to Disney and far too boring, it seems quite obviously a way of generating large amounts of revenue, which I did expect if I'm honest.
I just wanted it to be so much more than it was!
When you look at films like 'Gaurdians', the humour sort of works, and in the old films that is true too, but it's so quickly done in this it just feels weird, the direction is so fast between scenes it just left me confused as to why it was even there.
Action wise it was ok, graphically very good, and I quite like the way that real scenes have been used rather than CGI all the time.
there are a couple of reviews that hit it spot on here, one refers to Voldermort, quite right too, what's that all about?
There was a chance here to make a film that inspired a new generation of an old fan, I think ultimately they have achieved the new fan bit, but 'hardcore' SW fan is not going to like the new direction. It just didn't work for me at all, there aren't many films that I leave, but this sadly was one.

I went into this without much in the way of expectation. I love the originals and don`t care much for the prequels, although I found them entertaining on release and still like bits of them despite their many flaws.

I was quite into the film for about the first half hour or so, enjoying following the new characters (Boyega, Ridley and Isaac) all of whom are likeable and funny. I also felt a bit of nostalgia at the appearance of Solo and Chewie, all seemed to be going well. A number of questions about the universe we`ve been away from so long hadnt been answered and there were a few too many references or direct lifts from the originals but it all seemed to be going well and I was engaged.

As the film continued and It became obvious that it was just going to be a retread of the original peppered with bits and pieces of the others with a liberal dose of a fanservice and an odd amount of jokey humour It began to lose me. It felt like I was watching Star Trek Into Darkness or Prometheus again. Too many things happening simply because thats what happened in the originals or for plot convenience, to hell with whether it makes sense or not.

A very weak villain and how predictable it all got didnt help. Once I stopped caring, all the niggly little details that didnt make sense became much more noticeable. By the time the big moments of the movie happened I was just wishing for it to be over.

I can`t say it was terrible, but I don`t really see myself ever watching it again. All the good things are draped over an unimaginative retread of a classic. All the grand epic moments are either rushed past in the hurry to get to the next joke/reference or the the movie doesnt feel like its earned them.

They could of course try to use this as a start point for new stories and something better, but between the mystifyingly glowing reviews and fear of trying anything new they probably won`t. Which is a shame because I`m not interested in seeing more of this, which is probably what we`ll get.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ok so I thought it was a good movie but it was not worth all the hype. If you are an all out fan such as myself i would not recommend seeing it in theater. If you are an all out fan you would understand that it is just bits and pieces taken from the old movies and put into a new one. The force awakens does not have a good flow and kinda everywhere with the plot. There are many new characters and abilities that are introduced. Ray is a new character WITH NO BACK ROUND AT ALL which is very annoying which many people including myself think she is Lukes daughter. Which brings me to another point Luke Skywalker is in the movie once for about 30 seconds and has no lines which is disappointing i was hoping to see more of him. Another thing Han Solo and Laya have a kid which no one knew about but he is all of a suddon on the dark side and once agian he has no back round or information all anyone knows that he is Han Solo's kid It was just a remake of episode 4 and is super predictable and it was a bad remake at that..... another thing if you are going to make another movie in the series stick to the facts STORMTROOPERS CANNOT TAKE OF THERE HELMET KEEP IT THAT WAY there are so many things off about it i would wait till it comes out to see it dont waste your money on it Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Wow, this movie is getting this type of hype for such a completely un-original plot if any? I was really hoping that somehow this film would do the impossible but of course it did not. It did not expand GL's vision into a compelling overall narrative, but unlike many other negative reviews, I completely loved the gal protagonist developing mad force skills on the fly. And the setup to show the decline in the power of the dark side is somewhat appreciated in that the lead Sith lord of this film has anger management issues. Very weak subtleties that I may eventually come to appreciate. However, the main unforgivable thing for me is the completely boring and inexcusable third iteration of xwings attacking a death star - seriously? Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Honestly i think that The Force Awakens is nowhere near the greatness of the previous six Episodes (all of them) and I guess that in a year from now - probably sooner - a lot of people will see this film as mediocre as what actually it is: a childish and politically correct Star Wars movie made by Disney and designed for the families.
Even the prequels, which everybody seems to dislike now, have so many epic moments with great emotional impact which totally lack in Episode 7. Just listen to "Duel of the Fates" and -instantly- you will remember the great climax at the end of The Phantom Menace with Qui Gon Jinn and Obi Wan dueling with Darth Maul in a legendary lightsaber fight, Padmé leading the hunt for Gunray or a young Anakin joining the battle against the Federation droid control ship.

In Revenge of the Sit, four years later, you would have seen that kid becoming Darth Vader after a breathtaking duel against his mentor Kenobi. Palpatine's treachery, the fall of the Republic, Yoda's exile: everything also fits perfectly and dramatically from the Prequels to the Original Trilogy that -of course- has those kind of epic moments too.

So where are supposed to be the great scenes that deserve to be remembered in The Force Awaken?

Those that you can find are just a simple readjustment of Episode 4 and while JJ surely chose a conservative approach from the plot's point of view (so many point in common with A New Hope) this movie then heavily fails by belittling the use of the lightsaber and of the force.
I could accept Finn (a stormtrooper without any training) using a Lightsaber at first but simply you can't maintain any suspension of disbelief when Rey ( the best new character,by the way) uses an old Jedi Master mind trick to free herself in the prison or when they kick Kylo Ren's ass in the final: "the duel of the rookies" at its finest.
Add that Snoke and Kylo Ren clearly do not have the same Charisma of the Emperor, Darth Vader or Darth Maul.
I don't want even start with how inglorious is the fate they decided for Han Solo...

Perhaps a more mature rated film is possible with character development in Ep 8 (especially with the one who is supposed to be the villain), but let's be honest: considering Disney, seems it's not gonna happen

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I created an account to write this review. I grew up on the Star Wars movies, extended universe books, video games, everything. After the failure of the prequels I was hesitant but optimistic for TFA. I really, really wanted to like this movie.

The Plot
I know that if some Disney exec came to me a few years ago and asked me to sit down and write out a plot to a new Star Wars movie, I would be terrified. It is just insane how many stories they could have told with this new trilogy, and the pressure to come up with one that would please both the old fans and newcomers would be crazy. It is hard to put into words my disappointment when I discovered I was watching a rehash of A New Hope. JJ Abrams basically selected all his favorite scenes and themes from the original trilogy and recreated them with fancy visual effects and new characters. The Resistance, Mini Vader, Mini Boba Fett, shiny new Luke/Han mash-up (who can do seemingly everything perfectly on the first try), droids holding plans to things, cantina scenes, new Death Star (why?). All that and more, hastily thrown together. The little cameos and nods to the original trilogy were interesting at first, but after Finn accidentally activated the chess board on the Falcon in an absolutely pointless scene, I found they were getting stale. I don't need you to beat me over the head with the fact that I'm watching Star Wars, I already know I am, show me something new and let me enjoy it. It is like they realized the movie was not strong enough to stand on it's own, and kept pointing "See? See? It's STAR WARS!! You love this!" There is also no explanation on the origin of The Resistance and First Order. If the Resistance is backed by the Republic, why is it the Resistance? Why do they have a single base and why is their entire "fleet" 12 X-wings?

The Characters
The Old
In the time between ROTJ and TFA, existing characters did not act like themselves. Luke has run off. Why? Because his new Jedi school was destroyed. But dont worry, there is a map to him. Where did the map come from? Who cares, we don't need to explain it. The Luke Skywalker I know and love would not hide while the galaxy is being ripped apart by one of his pupils. Han Solo leaves Leia and runs off with Chewie. AND loses the Millenium Falcon!! Why, how? Because his son is evil. Leia doesn't even care that both Luke and Han have abandoned her to fight against the First Order by herself, she is mildly annoyed by it, if even that. Just a "how do you do" to Han with some cringe worthy chemistry on the side when he finally shows up. The Leia from the original trilogy would be pissed off, and probably would have dragged both of them back by herself 20 years prior to the movie.

The New
The new characters suffer from being smashed into pre-defined roles as the new generation. Kylo Ren is a laughable attempt at a new dark lord. Lightsaber temper tantrums do not make him scary. His power seems to fluctuate wildly with JJ Abrams giving and removing power to fit him into whatever is happening and move the plot forward. First of all, he can read minds with the Force. Not even Vader or the Emperor could do this. Next, we are shown that he wiped out Luke's entire new generation of Jedi. So this guy can potentially stand toe-to-toe with Luke Skywalker, he must be pretty damn powerful. But wait...now he is fighting a stormtrooper with no force sensitivity...and almost losing? He can sense Han Solo landing on the Starkiller, but can't sense him 20 feet away? This man who was trained by his uncle Luke Skywalker and whatever Snoke showed him cannot defeat a scavenger who used the Force for the first time that day? Rey suffers from this same power fluctuation. She is a combat, mechanical, and Force genius. She outsmarts Han when fixing his own ship, despite probably never having been in a running ship in her entire life. Without any training, she deduces that she can use the Force to control another being's mind, and immediately does so successfully. She handily defeats a trained ex-Jedi, the grandson of Darth Vader, after remembering the Force exists and closing her eyes. Captain Phasma as the Boba Fett-ish character is weak and serves no purpose whatsoever. Finn is totally forgettable and could be replaced by anybody. There is little character development. At the end of the movie I thought, "Gee, I cared a lot about the characters after seeing A New Hope. Do I care about these?" I had trouble even remembering their names.

In all, I would say that this is an okay Science Fiction movie. The visuals are wonderful, music is great as always. However, when you add the Star Wars title to it, I expect more. I expect it to fit in an established universe and its rules. I expect the characters to act like themselves. I expect NEW STORY for god's sake. You have the entire Star Wars universe to play with and you choose to recycle an old story...it is just mind boggling. An average rating for an average movie, 5

It is largely soulless and there is no feeling of true accomplishment once you have reached the conclusion. There are a myriad of questions left for the viewer to boot, either as a deliberate ploy to keep you engaged in the trilogy or out of intellectual laziness. It is an attempt at playing on the nostalgia of older fans while introducing a new slate of characters to continue the series and it manages to do none particularly well. One has to wonder, with the large production budget and creative A-Team Disney and JJ Abrams had to work with, how they managed to produce such a rote and unimaginative story.

All in all, it is a spectacular film in terms of effects and visceral scenes but lacking in story or substance. This seems to have become JJ Abrams' modus operandi and he certainly doesn't fail to disappoint on those counts.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Highly disappointing. How can a neophyte can do as much with a light saber and the force as a trained Sith? Plot is a total rehash. Han Solo wisely departed through death. I think Harrison Ford will be happy in the long run. Why does Ren need a mask given he has no wounds and it would be cumbersome? He is a very weak character as well - not so much evil as childish or irrational. Glitzy production and music save it from a worse rating. Unfortunately, this feels like the story of the emperor with no clothes, but here it is the movie with no soul or intellegence. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Force Jumps the Shark

After all the hype, the film, a beautifully realised remake of Episode 4 featuring another Death Star. Its new female chosen one undermines the credibility of the story. Let me explain.

Disney and JJ Abrams wanted to have a massive hit that appealed to fans, so viola, instead of pursuing a new course, they rehashed Episode 4 with the same identical plot points BUT had a woman, not a man, at the centre of the action. Unlike men, who have to train, suffer and earn their use of the Force, everything comes easy to Rey. Fix and fly a starship with zero problem? Use the Force, wield a lightsaber, beat men who are twice your size and have trained all their lives to fight? Easy for a woman heroine. This balderdash undermines the credibility of the rehash. As Han Solo nods, impressed at everything Rey does (she's either his or Luke's daughter, of course we'll find out down the line), Rey goes from poor scavenger to resistance leader without any resistance. No shooting womp rats on Tatooine, no learning the force at the Jedi school, no Yoda training, no modesty learned (Fear is the path to the dark side) - she is a woman and therefore, brave, strong and perfect in every way. Women never have to struggle to achieve things like men, they are born to rule.

Such is the nonsense offered by The Force Awakens. All of this is couched in a beautifully made action spectacular, pretty well acted by Star Wars standards (not very high!) and a hype machine that is faster and better than any in the universe. Not only is the plot a retread, but it has more coincidences in it than any story I've ever heard. Leave that to the nerds who will attack it in their reviews.

Worth seeing, if only because everyone will see it.

I noted quite a bit of attention paid in social media to Carrie Fisher's appearance, which is a shame. OTOH, her performance was surpisingly quite wooden. I thought her performances in the first 3 movies were quite good. In any case, perhaps some people intuitively realized a substantive deficiency in Fisher's performance this go-around but couldn't consciously grasp the source of their dissatisfaction and focused instead on the superficial.

My 13-year old and 8-year-old kids enjoyed it greatly and that's some consolation.

Ok to many plot holes, characters with no or limited force training with abilities far to advanced, flying the Falcon for the first time and not crashing it while going through tight spaces was to far fetched. The scenery outside on Jakar and other planets was excellent the indoor shots looked like they were on a sound stage. The destruction of Corcrosant, I am assuming it was Corcrosant was not violent enough and as I said it just looked like a small cast was standing on a railing on a sound stage when explosion hit. See the movie do not buy all the hype hopefully the next one will be better. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If this wasn't the sequel to the original Star Wars trilogy, I'd give it a 7. As it is that sequel, I feel I'm being pretty generous with a 5.

The Good

1. Nowhere near the amount of cringe-worthy scenes as the prequels. By default, the movie gets a little love for not being as bad as 1-3.
2. Liked Poe's character.
3. Acting was good enough.
4. Han Solo sounded and felt like Han Solo.
5. Nostalgia feels.
6. Some of the humor was good.
7. First half of the movie was pretty good. Figured the second half was gonna blow my mind. Was wrong.
8. Effects were amazing. Ships looked great.

The Bad

1. Mary Sue protagonist
2. Weak antagonist. A mere shadow of the Sith Lords that came before him. I know that is kind of the point, but it doesn’t work for me.
3. A thousand and one coincidences to connect a plot that is far too similar to previous instalments. I didn’t want a soft reboot for Star Wars, I wanted a new adventure.
4. The political climate was hand-waved, like the audience is too stupid to listen to 1 minute of exposition to get us up to speed. Who the hell is the First Order? The Resistance? Where is the Republic in all this? I hate calling creative professionals lazy, too many reviewers have no idea the amount of work that goes into creating entertainment, but this is just lazy screen writing.
5. Too much of what we learned at the end of Return of the Jedi is either ignored, cast aside or not explained.
6. The mysterious elements of the film are far too many. Save a few things for the sequels, but in true JJ form, he doesn’t want to tell us what we need to know to truly enjoy this picture as a stand-alone feature.
7. The death of Han Solo was borderline criminal. To be fair, cool characters getting crappy deaths is pretty common in the franchise, but this is Han-Frickin-Solo. Arguably, one of, if not the most beloved character in cinema history. Abrams using his death to drive the arc of this new, weak-ass, antagonist just pisses me off. Solo deserved a hero’s death. Give that fan service instead of gimmicky hologram chess board or the training ball thingy or whatever.
8. Luke Skywalker wasn’t even in this movie. To add salt to the wound, we never got to see the original crew onscreen together and never will now that they killed off Han. For shame, JJ.
9. The movie had zero tension. Never did I feel any of the characters were actually in danger, except of course the telegraphed death of Solo.
10. The Star Killer base was beyond ridiculous. I try not to overthink the science in a Star Wars movie, I generally can suspend disbelief but Abrams tends to not know where to draw that line. He takes other people’s ideas and just injects steroids into them. We get things like super death stars that super duper explode or super Enterprises that can bump you out of hyperspace (in Star Trek) or super duper light sabers with lazer cross guards. Whatever… just dumb.
11. The movie should be called Sky Wars. For some reason, almost all of the dogfights (if you can call them that) happen in atmosphere. Remember when Star Wars was good and if you had surface combat, you had surface vehicles. Snow speeders, speeder bikes, At-Ats, At-Sts. When in space, they would fight in star fighters. There was an internal logic to how the world worked. Now everything is all Tie Fighters and Xwings and the Falcon can do amazing barrel rolls in regular atmosphere.
12. Speaking of the Falcon, why was it bouncing all over the place like a Fast and Furious movie? Running into trees, sliding on the ice. Just stupid crap. Another example of JJ on steroids. In the OG films, solo does crazy moves in the most desperate times, but he does these based on his bad-ass pilot skills. In these movies he is doing suicidal things that he only survives due to dumb luck.
13. Remember when dog fights between X-wings and Tie Fighters actually had a story to them? Remember when pilots helped each other, had to line up shots, thereby building tension. When they died you felt it. When they blew up an enemy, you understood it was an accomplishment. In this movie, Poe blows up like 8 Tie Fighters in less than 10 seconds. Wooohooo, goofy ass Michael Bay, video game action scenes are now the norm, can’t wait for episode 8.

I think I’ve rambled enough. Undoubtedly, Abrams had a near-impossible task when making this film, but there were some easy wins he could have done to salvage this thing- I’m sure he tried his best. But in the wise words of Yoda… “Do or do not, there is no try.” Unfortunately for many of us fans, he did not.

Disappointing, lightweight movie.

'The Force Awakens' mirrors 'A New Hope', but it just doesn't have the same mythical weight.

OK, it was good to have Han Solo back, but the poor guy looks like he hasn't done much with his life for the last 30 years. The rest of the Good Guys were kind of forgettable and unbelievable. Rey had zero flaws. Finn was a waste of screen time, with motivations that didn't really make sense.

The Bad Guys were a giant hologram (yawn), and an angsty wannabe Darth Vader, only minus the fear factor. This is a guy in charge of a massive and feared military force? Seriously? And you've built Death Star 3.0 and it still has a critical flaw? You're sh**ing me, right?!

The plot was just a lot of racing around from set piece to set piece, tied together with some dopey coincidences. Gee Disney, gifted with the Star Wars world and some of the movie worlds' greatest creative people, you could've done better.

(And just to confirm my opinion, my four year old son preferred the original over the new film)

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Unfortunately, this movie suffers because of what came before it and what came after it. It undermined the original trilogy and was then undermined by it's own sequel. So it's in an awkward space where it's payoffs didn't land and it's strong elements are kind of soured by the knowledge to what's to come. A lot of the narrative pull was around mystery boxes - What is Luke up to? Why is Rey so awesome? Who is Snoke? How did X happen? - since the sequel did nothing compelling with those mystery boxes we're left with a fun but ultimately crippled film. As a standalone film I'd probably give it a 7. But as a film caught between what came before and what came after it shrivels down to a 4 out of 10. So lets go in the middle and give it a 5. Rey and Finn deserved better. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Best to review this from two viewpoints. As a Sci-Fi standalone "B" film, with a big budget I'd give it a '7'. In "B" films you have to "suspend disbelief" a lot more and not worry about details. As a science fiction movie in the Star Wars universe here's a '3'. Where historical or a scientific background has been established. So an average of '5'.

Some of my additional plot point issues from the beginning:

* Tech scavenger 1 captures robot and gives it up to scavenger 2 without a fight or payment.
7 Knows she's bad-ass and wants nothing to do with her.
3 Doesn't know she makes Star Wars dolls, eats with her mouth open and licks her plate clean, armed with just a knife and big stick. Hardly bad-ass.

* 20 minute mark. Need action scene. Let's have them steal a tethered Tie Fighter and start shooting things up.
7 Cool sequence, boom bam.
3 Tethered? Guess the storm-trooper missed the Tie 101 class that Tie Fighters don't have hyper-drive.
(First of a few action scenes that did nothing to move the plot along.)

* 30 minute mark. Heavy action.
7 Cool action, blowing up the camp, lots of running, and explosions.
3 If they wanted to capture the droid, why all the shooting. Might they destroy it?
(Guess they haven't invented keys to their starships yet.)

* Guy dressed in black gets pissed and chops up a control panel
7 Wow, really showed his mean streak.Light saber is powerful.
3 Control panel controls something, possibly important. Someone now has to fix it.

* Old guy with hairy sidekick recovers stolen ship.
7 Happened to be in the area.
3 Star Wars universe has over a million planets. Someone must have activated a distress call, hyperspace travel is fast.

* Bar on lush green planet with a hundred patrons.
7 Wow. Lots of aliens. I want a bar stool with my name on it there.
3 Bar in middle of jungle. How did all the patrons get there? No scene of a parking lot filled with Trailway Las Vegas buses, or a cool monorail system. Must have dosed off here.

* 70 minutes in. big battle scene.
7 Cool fighters blowing up the bar. Good guys arrive to save the day. Awkward reunion of estranged old people family.
3 Why attack this place? Nice reunion of previous young people.
(Another unnecessary shoot up.)

* Flashbacks
7 Hints of character cool hidden motivations.
3 "We don't need no stinkin flashbacks," but a couple of flashforwards are ok.

* Girl able to do well against all bad guys without training.
7 Anyone with the force thing can speak, robotese, hairy companionese, "repeat my words" mind trick, and dueling expertise.
3 Luke was a slow learner.

Need I go on?

In Summary:
7 Can't wait to catch up on the full series. Although, I do hear that episode IV is very derivative of this movie.
3 Time to re-watch the cartoon channel's "The Clone Wars," for superior villains, planets, good guys, and story lines. Collapse

I watched this movie in a theatre in Paris...on the 2nd of January...and i seriously was falling asleep...I barely watched the second half of it...it was so...can't say boring, but not as exciting as any other Star Wars movie. The acting was mediocre at best. While Daisy Ridley did a great job of being a good fighter in the film, the intimate or emotional scenes were cringe worthy to say the least. I thought that John Boyega, while funny, almost seemed out of place throughout the film. I don't think this was necessarily his fault as it may have been the writing, but his character just didn't act like a Star Wars character. He acted almost just like a normal person you'd run into anywhere. There were far too many cliché moments in this movie. It has a nearly identical plot with 'A New Hope' only this time the planet killing space object is bigger and badder. Kylo Ren was fantastic, until he took off his mask. After that it seemed whenever he spoke he was struggling not to cry. The movie does contain a good twist near the end. However, the final duel is a bit ridiculous to me, as Rey has no experience fighting nor using the force and yet is able to hold her own in a fight with a sith. To me it just seemed absurd. I was disappointed in the movie overall, and I hope the next movies are better. Should you see it? Of course you should, its Star Wars. Just don't spend a lot of money or miss something important to watch it. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Force Awakens is the only movie in this new triology that i fell that it has Star Wars scent, by this and a good special effects this movie gets a 5, but this movie gets a lot of mistakes that it is stand out.

First the plot, it is a copy the episode IV, but worse Why?, easy boring characters, aliens and worlds, the first orden (in these movie because in novels is better) is the bad version of Impire.

Second the Universe is bored, this is a big sin in Star Wars because in before episodes this aspect was practiacally the best parth, here is the worst, i have to say that New Republic is a joke, because only we saw it destruction, but why?; that you have to read in the novels.

Third the soundtrack, is not the worst (Because next episodes are worse).

I liked this movie, but here starts the star wars decancy.

However, they must first overcome a bad guy in a black mask that makes his voice sound funny, who takes orders from an old man. Also the old guy dies. Sounds similar, doesn't it?

Episode I was criticised for being too different from the OT. It was panned on release but has been given a more generous review in later years. TFA is the opposite: it was exactly what Star Wars fans wanted, but nothing more. Critical acclaim in 2015 has turned to mild satisfaction in 2019.

A New Hope had droids that spoke and acted like people. The Force Awakens has people that speak and act like robots.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie looks and sounds like Star Wars, what with the similar characters and ships and lightsabers galore! But it certainly didn't feel like a Star Wars movie. The movie plays like a re-imagining of Star Wars: Episode IV (plus a few tidbits from Empire and Jedi), but with a lot less *magic*. Which, to me, makes it not even worth it. Who would have known Star Wars would fall victim to the reboot culture of Hollywood? This movie did as well as it did merely by stroking your nostalgia strings, but fails to provide much else of substance. I would have preferred they at least make a standalone remake of Episode IV because they spent so much time trying to hit the same beats of movies long past that they couldn't really tell the story of Episode VII unfolding before our eyes.

It's been 30 years since our heroes' last mission on screen together, but things don't seem to be going the trajectory we appeared to be headed during the credits of Episode VI. And sadly, JJ Abrams' attempts to take us back through memory lane meant very little time was spent explaining just what was going on in this movie. Why is the galaxy back in turmoil? Who is the resistance... or why are they resisting at all? I thought the rebels won? Why is the Empire just as strong, if not stronger than before, but with a different name? Why should I care about Hosnian Prime? What happened to Coruscant? These questions, plus more, are left up to the novelization and future movies and entries into the series. Which, in English, means "pay Disney extra bucks for content that should have been in this movie." Being a fan on opening night, giddy with excitement after 11 years of a Star Wars drought, I was left with more questions than answers. More frustration than joy. The characters themselves are enigmas with questionable motivations. Finn seemed like he'd be a very deep character: a storm trooper turned good guy (or Jedi, given the bait and switch marketing). But no. He has PTSD from seeing his friend die in battle, then sees a pretty girl and decides he wants to fight again, but against his old friends. What? Overall I feel like his character doesn't do very much at all except for being comic relief. A big disappointment, considering they marketed him holding a lightsaber in some trailers. Overall I feel like he's wasted as a character. That brings us to Rey. Not a lot is told about her, but you can tell that characters around her know who she *really* is. They are telegraphing her secrets so hard that you know they're going for a "No, *I* am your father"-type moment in Episode VIII or IX. What happened to subtlety? A lack of backstory nonwithstanding, the movie lacked in atmosphere. Things felt very formulaic and stale. I used to love hearing John Williams crank it up to 11 in the original trilogy and the prequels. It would get my blood pumping for a fight scene or make me feel more in touch with the characters' emotions. It would allow the scene to breathe a bit. This movie? Nah. Williams and company phoned it in on this one. At no point did his score overtake the scene and get my blood pumping -- at least not after the initial opening crawl. Worse so, the scenes that are meant to be nostalgia trips are quite heavy handed that it's 4th wall breaking. It's almost like JJ Abrams popped up in the seat next to me and went, "Hey, remember this scene from the original STAR WARS!?" Yes, I remember. I just watched all 6 before coming to the theater. And none of them had helicopter shot cliffhangers either.

All in all, I didn't hate the movie, but I certainly didn't love it either. A 5/10 is the best I can give this movie. It had its bright spots. BB-8 steals the show, hands down. And it was good to see Han, Luke and Leia on the same screen at all. I like the use of a woman and PoCs as main characters. Big props for that. But with those in mind, I definitely didn't wait a decade for a half-baked remake of Episode 4 advertised as Episode 7. If they wanted to smash together a remake and a sequel, just do what Creed did. The former main character becomes the mentor to the new one while they embark on a brand new journey. Not copy+paste an old script from a classic that didn't need to be touched. I thought Abrams would have learned that after seeing how bad Star Trek: Into Darkness turned out. Now instead of 3 unique movies in the new trilogy, we'll have at best 2. That's assuming Episode 8 isn't a remake of ESB. Lastly, it's painfully obvious that George Lucas was behind the "Star Wars magic" this whole time. Awful characters and all, you still felt like you were watching authentic Star Wars.

Rey's mysterious force-powers (because she is a clone of Luke Skywalker's right hand, severed by Vader on Cloud City) begin to manifest without any concrete explanation, making her character arc baffling and un-earned. Han Solo dies before the band can get back together. Luke is exiled to an island for no specific reason. Phasma is a coward instead of the strong female warrior the marketing sold us. It is a remake of A New Hope, but the pacing is completely off. There are numerous climaxes throughout the film that do little to further the story, and everything wraps up at lighting speed at the end.

Initially, the mostly real sets and practical effects immerse you in this real, lived-in universe… then everything becomes a cgi festival without a single real-looking set or prop for minutes at a time.

The characters are all immediate best friends, and it’s hard to relate to perfect characters. You don’t get to borrow character development from movies that came out 30 years ago, you have to build it in your own movie.

The best of the sequel trilogy movies, yet the writing is still lazy and unimaginative. Character development is a bit lackluster and at times, contradictory. Nothing really original or special here to see.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Not as bad as the prequels, but JJ's unfortunately let his mistakes with the new Star Trek series bleed in here, and the result is a mess. The movie starts off well enough, introducing us to the Empire (Or, the First Order) getting down to business--namely, killing innocent civilians. Yet, the script never bothers to explain who some of the supporting characters are or their motivations... They're just there to help out and show how bad the big baddie of our movie is. With exception to the side character issue, the intro helped to draw me into the film, which is a shame because the rest of the movie drew me out of the experience. The two leads, through circumstance, are hounded by the First Order after a droid carrying plans to the whereabouts of Luke Skywalker is told to flee the opening's carnage by... um, "Ace Pilot" (They didn't characterize him or have him in the film enough for me to remember his actual name), and thus, steal the Millennium Falcon from a junk yard and flee Jakku to escape. From here, the plot turns into a mess, with the leads meeting up with Han Solo and Chewie, engaging in some shenanigans, and then being attacked by the Empire again after they try to find Leia. This entire stretch was for the most part long, boring, and tedious, reeking of the monster chase from Star Trek 2009. Rey inevitably gets kidnapped, the Empire's new contrived super weapon is revealed, planets are blown up, and pants across the universe are collectively shat in. The resolution sees the Resistance (The Rebels, who work with the "Republic" but aren't actually in power) attacking... um, "Not Hoth" (a name was never given for the planet) with a paltry force of X-wings in an effort to destroy this new super weapon, which inspires terror across the galaxy with the soul shaking name of...yeah sorry, they didn't name this one either. Blasters are fired, X-wings go "pew, pew, pew", and Kylo Ren confronts our heroes in a climatic showdown. Sadly, this isn't nowhere near as exciting as it sounds. The execution of this script is lackluster at best, with numerous plot holes and logical gaffes that were unsurprising to myself, given JJ's consistent inability to learn from his mistakes. I expect this from amateur first time writers and not AAA Hollywood productions. While the blaster fights were decent for the most part, the fighter combat was a blur of motion and shaky cockpits, reminding me more of the show Super Human Samurai than actual Star Wars. No detail is given around the pilots surroundings, which helped the audience to see and feel what the pilot was going through in the original trilogy. Instead, we get random fighters being shot down. There was better fighter combat pay off in Independence Day, and while both of these movies used CGI, the former looks better and more realistic: Force Awakens' fighter combat and ship aesthetics look like a cheap video game. The Lightsaber combat is clunky and awkward as hell, and that's coming from someone who likes the Prequel and Original Series' fighting styles. As for the cast, new comer Finn, of whom I was concerned was being shoehorned in due to identity politics, actually surprised me. He's a good character... which unfortunately cannot be said about Rey, the female lead in Force Awakens. One part insufferable, one part savant, she the embodiment of the all too common "Mary Sue" Trope, the heights of which reach ridiculous levels at the end of the film's final confrontation. Whenever there's a problem that Finn can't shoot at, Rey's there to pull a miracle play out of her ass. This gets painful as Rey starts gaining force abilities like Mind Control while in captivity--out of thin air. No guidance, no Luke instructing her through the Force--all it takes is Rey's gender to fuel her abilities, leading to her being able to overpower Klyo Ren, a fallen jedi who trained for years under Luke. Speaking of mistakes, Klyo Ren is horribly miscast, and as soon as his mask comes off, both his character and his struggles can no longer be taken seriously. At that point, he sounds and acts more like a whiny emo who fears to confront daddy about his lifestyle choices. All in all, it's not as bad as the prequels. It is however, more reminiscent of Bioware and EA's treatment of the Star Wars universe with SWTOR, where they screw up more than they improve. If you're a fan and are still dead set to see this, then go ahead. If you aren't, or are not a fan, then avoid. It's a shame: we were finally free of Lucas's meddling, only to have JJ try and re-enact his childhood fantasy battles on screen. What a waste. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'll echo what other members of the resistance have said. Lazy writing, bland characters, no context for anything. If Abrams was trying to please the geeks with his nostalgia fest then he failed miserably as all we wanted was a decent, coherent movie, rich in back story, believable in the context of what we know about the force and the galaxy Lucas created for us. I'm also livid that he killed off Solo. What a slap in the face. He may as well have killed my childhood. Destroy the Franchise then destroy my child hood hero, thanks a bunch Abram. Then everyone in the film just moves on like nothings happened. Even Chewy seems nonplussed as he flies off with his younger, hotter new partner. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Going into this movie, my expectations were modest. Having just watched the entire series, anything equal or above the third episode would have been a winner.
So here I am, declaring my disappointment for this overwrought nostalgia trip that suffers in just about every area. Obviously direct comparisons can be made to A New Hope, and it is a blatant copy in many respects. But the changes, or the vapid fillers in between, are considerably less entertaining or substantial. There is no character to these characters. The General of the New Order expresses his evilness through a series of stroke-induced facial expressions. The new baddie, Kylo Ren, decides to paint the walls with his lightsaber when he gets upset, poor thing. The Silver Surfer, eer Silver Stormtrooper captain, has the approximate threat of a penguin in a cape. And the big bad is a completely CGI-rendered evil that we know nothing about (he fairs the best).
So the bad guys are bad, what about the goodies? They’re bad too. Finn chooses to express his exuberance at strange times, to force the audience into a stupor, and decides to leave and return within seconds. Rey is the slave-scavenger that manages to see her future in an older scavenger and still wants to remain a scavenger even though she can pilot the Millennium Falcon instantly and is able to best an ex-Jedi trained in lightsaber combat seconds after touching one. We could write essays about Rey’s perfection. The old heroes, though, what have they done to them? Han Solo, the man who changed the most in the original series, is back doing his smuggling thing. Leia is fortunately given just a few lines, because you can never be quite be sure if she’s about to laugh or cry. I don’t blame Carrie Fisher though, what they’ve done to these old heroes is a travesty. Luke gets just 5 seconds of screen time and a swirling helicopter shot because “ that would look cool.” Even Chewie’s lines are worn out. R2D2 remains in hibernation for much of the film because he couldn’t stand what has happened to the universe.
Not only does it manage to setup poor new characters, it actually harms the original series in the process. Our victory is wrenched from our hearts and dumped into a modernized take on a nazi party that lives on a planet-turned-deathstar. Starkiller is a terrible name, by the way. And the science behind it is so ludicrous that it hurts to even talk about it. The pain doesn’t stop there. We also get unfunny lines, either from bad timing, poor writing or bad acting. Side characters have less charm than a dead Jawa, special mention going to the yellow-skinned goggle lady that could be entirely removed from the plot and it wouldn’t matter. The only good character in the entire movie is the voiceless droid, BB8, who manages to gain some appreciation due to its perseverance.
The movie also commits many other sins, chief of which is using death as a spectacle for the audience rather than a turning point for characters or story. Many of the story turns are predictable, not just those that copy A New Hope. It even manages to have a poor lightsaber fight with Rey doing a limp-wristed palpatine stab. The fight is poorly cut and lit so you cannot see anything. The movie falls back on nostalgia in lazy and tiresome ways. There are dozens of cringe-worthy moments either from clichés or insulting lines that just make you shake your head. This is not a passionate project, its one that’s been designed by committee and it shows in every aspect. The story is not thought out nearly well enough for a franchise that demands precision. It would have been better to start anew so they could head in new directions. Falling back on older characters requires the utmost case and that has not happened here. The Force Awakens is a mammoth project that will earn billions and produce millions of new fans. Size matters not.

A basic rehash of episode 4 with bits of the other films sprinkled in. Daisy Ridley while talented falls short of her role, she comes off as awkward and stilted and somehow still cocky and overconfident. The juxtaposition of her relative skill with her outward attitude makes unlikeable at best and unbelievable at worst. She and her character have plenty of room for growth though. John Boyega on the other hand is wholly out of place. His character is an uninteresting waste of screentime, made worse by an almost childish performance that has no place in AAA cinema. Only the performances of Harrison Ford, Adam Driver and Oscar Isaacs save this from being an entirely unenjoyable film. Expand

The second worst Star Wars Movie after Episode 2.....

I loved the opening 30 mins or so, I thought they were going to take us on an exciting new adventure with these new characters. However they quickly got bogged down in fan service, they brought us the original characters back who really had no purpose what so ever. I mean you'd think they would have developed as people over 30 years, they would have a few stories to tell.... but no, they're there for fanboi cheers.

Then the story quickly just follows the plot of Episode 4, to the point they have a Death Star at the end that they explode. Haven't they learnt with Death Stars yet? Either don't bother or STOP GIVING IT A MASSIVE WEAKPOINT!!!!! What's even more crazy is some Stormtrooper had the ability to turn off the shields... no.. something like that would never have been designed that way. Then how a few bits of c4 could make something the size of a planet explode... wtf?

The problem with the story not being unique and it's own thing is when you decide to Watch the entire Star Wars movie collection in the future, you'll want to skip Episode 7 because it's just Episode 4 but worse.

Walking out of the Cinema, not one person was excited, they were all saying it was boring and crap and laughing at there being another Death Star. My friend who was a huge Star Wars fan.. he just said it was **** and worse than The Phantom Menace.

That is why I put this film as the second worse, because at least The Phantom Menace had something new going on. I was excited to watch it and I still am, despite it's shoddy acting, at least it had The Pod Racing and Darth Maul and other exciting things going on, you can even watch "The Phantom Edit" to make it better.

I can just hope Episode 8 and 9 do something new and they don't make Rey related to any of them. I had a hard time believing Luke would just give up a run away (seems to be the Jedi way now) but I'd have a harder time believing he or any one else would just abandon that girl.

Weak weak characters. Weak plot which left me with no desire to watch any more installments.

Forgettable characters. Seriously watched the movie 2 nights in a row and still cant remember the main protagonists name.

Obvious links to Nazism by Obviously Jewish run Hollywood.

Here's an Idea. Lets throw together ideas from Avengers, Hunger games, Thor and and of the other star wars moves. Mix them together, throw in some familiar characters who look worn out from the original movies, use a plot that has already worked once before and then work on lots of special effects. Bound to be a hit right? WRONG!

FLOP!

Avoid and do not bother watching any more installments.

Plot-wise,Sadly, this latest Star Wars installment is further evidence that Hollywood really has run out of ideas. As stilted and humorless as the prequels could feel, they at least told a new story, even if we could guess at the ending. Plot-wise, Episode VII is basically a retread of Episodes IV and V (and a little bit of VI) with some cosmetic alterations: Luke is a girl, Yoda is an old woman, Han is black, and R2D2 is a soccer ball. The Empire is now the Third Reich, or something. Otherwise, if you've seen the original trilogy, you've seen this movie. It's the same kind of lazy, derivative writing that was on display in JJ Abrams's Star Trek Into Darkness, which in places verged on being a scene-for-scene, even word-for-word remake of Wrath of Khan. You don't make a great movie by blatantly stealing characters, plot twists, and dialogue from another great movie: you make a forgettable imitation. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Good: Rey is amazing, Han is amazing (really brings the energy). Overall a very fun adventure. Well directed. Can't wait for episode 8.
The Bad: The betrayal of Han was really inappropriate. Not the fact it happened, but the way in which it was done -- Star Wars is supposed to be a story of redemption, not of a son pretending to turn to the light side to murder his father, arguably the most loved hero in the franchise, without any chance of defending himself. It's a cheap hollywood emotion trick, where everything the movie says is that he's going to turn to the light side, and then says "psyke! just kidding, we lied". Additionally, there is so much fan service done to A New Hope it felt like the movie was a joke at times. I enjoyed the prequels, and this felt like the producers were so afraid of being unpopular by the outspoken haters, they re-made A New Hope in a different setting. Give it time and I think people will see this movie doesn't stand on its own - that is, without knowing it was made to appease OT fans, it will be really confusing to watch.

So many things were done right; yet, so many things were done wrong that the movie suffered as a whole.

Let's start with what they did right.
Introducing new characters. They needed to introduce characters such as Rey and Finn into the film in order to foster a new generation of pure badassery. Daisy Ridley was brilliant in her role. Rey really did come to life for me, and was in my opinion, more believable of a character than any other in the film. The introduction of oldies, but goodies, was well-paced and generally thoughtful. They did honestly try hard to pay homage to the past while bringing the future into the forefront. The story was generally well-put together, and the action scenes were pretty brilliant. A testament to J.J.'s particularly grandiose skills. However, that is where the good parts end.

The acting in the film is better than in some of the more recent films of the franchise, but most of the characters suffer from a lack of depth of feeling. In Episodes 4, 5, and 6, Darth Vader is brilliantly imposing. The people around him genuinely fear being under his command. His silence is ominous, his anger pure and antiseptic. His rage was terrifying, because his strength was undeniable from the first moments in A New Hope. We loved him because he was an archetypal terror! The villains in The Force Awakens, well, lets just say they leave much to be desired...

Rips from the plot of A New Hope, the Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi are abound throughout the film. Iconic moments are taken and recycled into this movie without pause or concern for the well-being of the plot in an effort to entertain old die-hards who can't understand that change is inevitable. This blatantly formulaic approach to the film just gave us more of the same. When Disney trashed the extended universe to make way for new canon material, the fans expected more. We expected new, powerful, masterful material instead of the plot re-write from long long ago. Instead, we got a recycled film without real creativity from the ground up.

Overall, the film suffers from having too many things to introduce and too many story arcs that have very little to do with one another. And because of that broadness, the story lacks in depth, and the length of the film cannot do justice to what they tried to accomplish. Many things seem to be in the film as an afterthought for decisions that were made. You will like it. It is fun and exciting! Though we have one quote for the producers of the next few films: “...But beware of the dark side... If once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny, consume you it will, as it did Obi-Wan's apprentice...” - Yoda

(NO spoilers!) alot of scenes are 1:1 taken from a new hope, it sure has a few funny (not too funny) lines, but god! the plot was the weakest of all movies, people complain about the prequels? at least they had information about what was going on,. not impressed at all. Star Wars was once for the family, but now, how many people got killed? without explanation at all? no reason why? blood, really? sure there was blood in "A new hope", but that was because george didnt know how do to it in a more suitable way I presume, the story telling did well for like 35min of the movie, after that everything went overspeed, no real explanation on what happened in the past 30 years? thats just weak storytelling, I guess i know why so many people are excited, it got explosions, it has 1:1 scenes from episode IV, it has a slow lightsaber duel, it has spaceships, a spacestation, (i hope thats no surprise?) it has a lot of action, shootings, but does it have heart? no!, does it explain why everything is even worse than it was under the control of the empire? no! what happened between Han and Leia? weren't they in love? why does Han make the same mistakes again? why does carrie fisher sound like an old hag, why the hardcore 3rd Reich reference, not even the emperor the evil itself wanted this kind of temper, I just cant understand why they tried so hard to make the emperor look like a little lamp compared to those first order murdering maniacs without motive? As someone who really loves star wars, I just cant understand how someone can write such an easy predictable script. I did enjoy some of the characters acting, Han did well, Lukes hair looked amazing, Rey was ok, bb8 was enjoyable, Kylo was at first enjoyable but that changed pretty quick, Finn was like the lion from "The Wizard of Oz", Chewbacca is getting old, where is Lando? where is wedge? they destroyed the second death star, why are those not in the movie? r2d2 which is the main character in every single star wars movie, had like 35 seconds of screen time, that is in fact unacceptable, i do know they wanted bb8 to be the new r2d2 but why cant those two co exist at the same time? I cant really say it deserves a rating below 4, because, some things were ok, some things were acceptable, a few scenes were good at best, but it is not extremely bad, it has no soul, and no real story, maybe episode VII will be better, i really hope so. The authors writing is recognizable throughout. Imagine if J.K Rowling didn't write the last 2 Harry Potter books and someone else was hired to finish it would it still be a Harry Potter book. You get the same feeling watching The force awakens. It looks and feels like someones interpretation of Star Wars. It feels looks and feels like a transformers movie.

There are so many coincidences within this movie. It is like they were to lazy to take the time to come up with logical reasons for one person meeting another. Instead you see these chance meeting with exactly the right person not once but on numerous occasions. Like come on.

This movie is not really star wars. Its an adaption, set to the pace of movies like transformers and star trek. So if you're OK with that then you will enjoy this movie. I walked out 3 quarters of the way in.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. J.J. Abrams did a great job directing the hell out of a lazy script, which is basically a remake of A New Hope with lots of contrivances it never bothers to explain. How did Han and Leia's son became a sith? How did Luke's Skywalker's lightsaber end up in a box in a random cantina? (they literally say "a question for another time" for that one) Why is a map to his location lost in the middle of nowhere? Apparently we're just supposed to roll with those issues without questioning them. Not to mention Abrams and Kasdan went overboard with the fan pandering references.
At least the movie is beautiful to look at and the actors are great (Lupita Nyongo and Max Von Sydow are criminally wasted though). Finn and Rey make a likeable team thanks to the chemistry between John Boyega and Daisy Ridley, but I would have liked to see more Poe Dameron. Kylo Ren, on the other hand, is a pretty weak villain. He came off as a whiny brat rather than an actual threat. Even the stormtroopers had a hard time taking him seriously (I love when they get out in the middle of Ren's tantrum).
Star Wars: The Force Awakens is a great movie while you eat it, but no so much when you digest it.

They get excited about Fin and Rei as new Star Wars characters but forget to compare them to any new characters in any new movie. Once you do that they come off -- at best -- as just okay.

The best way to review FORCE AWAKENS is to momentarily ignore it. I ask you to seek out the teaser trailer #2 for DC'S LEGENDS OF TOMORROW. Watch it. If you are utterly and completely unfamiliar with all these characters, you'll have to admit that the trailer has a reasonable PULSE. That it looks exciting on its own standards. However, if you've followed the franchises that have constructed this trailer -- you know with ZERO DOUBT that EVERY character in this trailer is more interesting than ever new player in FORCE.

With that perspective -- it suddenly occurs to you that despite this trailer being for a TV show that it will -- conservatively speaking -- be comparable in entertainment value. From my perspective the Legends trailer is more exciting than this Star Wars feature. Way better characters, way better story. No contest.

What I'm left with then is why people are going Lady Gaga for FORCE. The most familiar trope is that it reminds them of their childhood. Meeting old friends again, as it were. This oft repeated statement seems to be uttered in an alternate universe -- where was as a movie going society have somehow been deprived of subject matter from our childhood. Last time I checked almost EVERYTHING we watch and see is a remake or sequel from decades ago. How many Spidermen are we up to now? Seriously.

I will go as far to say that every Greg Berlanti hero series has been or will be more fun that all of the Star Wars movies. J.J. Abrams had his chance to introduce a bold new world, but like his Trek offerings --

-- dudes all about dull rehashing.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Star Wars: Force Awakens is a fun movie, and deserves a watch. But that's about all the good things you can say about it. JJ Abrams played it way too safe - the story is very similar to star wars: a new hope, and the pandering to liberal ideas and old Star Wars fans is quite ridiculous.

I don't have a problem with a woman in the role of a jedi, but I do have a problem with her defeating a trained Sith in literally her first time wielding a lightsaber. This is liberal feminist pandering at its best.

Meanwhile Finn is just there so they can say they have a black guy in a lead role.

And of course they brought back a slew of old characters to make more money, so everyone who was a fan of the original trilogy will pay to see the movie.

Then they killed off a major character just to add tension, and it is conventionally someone that who used to link this film to the old trilogy and isn't needed.

The story is predictable and doesn't make sense at times, like characters just literally running into each other at the perfect moment. And the overall plot is basically a copy of the first Star Wars film with a deathstar-esque super weapon, the resistance (new name for rebel alliance), and the first order (new name for galactic empire).

Bottom line, this movie feels like a formula. There aren't any original or interesting ideas, just rehashing and pandering to what the film makers expected will make the most money. Still a fun spectacle, but really dry and soulless at its core.

The movie is mediocre-decent as a standalone movie.

But considering it feels like a shallow remix-remake of episode 4 (evil corporation-empire/whatever chasing a drone that somehow ends up in the hands of a destined jedi who also happens to be an orfan and ends up blowing a giant planet destroying battlestation...).

It's like Godfather 4 starts with the marriage of Vincent's Corleone daughter and ends up with his soon back from the army killing the enemies of his father and taking control of the family and new york organized crime..

I won't say this movie is worst than episode 1 and 2, as a movie. But atleast EP 1 and 2 gave me much better action and curious characters, and Lucas was able to imagine new planets, new horizons.

JJ was probably told from Disney "play it safe", but he went to far.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Equivalent to an extraneous, guest-directed, fan-service beach party OVA for a masterpiece anime series.

Pretty much exactly what I would expect from a J.J. Abrams Star Wars: glossy, Zack Snydery, insubstantial scene-clips that provide entertainment for people with attention disorder and the uneducated/drugged masses; teen-angsty, referencing prior movie's characters nostalgically and killing them off, distractingly exceeding social boundaries without regard for the universe, formulaically including everything from prior movies, being excessively loud and flashy with action scenes, and having no central protagonist.

The movie was a series of Star Wars cliches. Cliches can be just fine with the right style, but 98% of scenes were without any original, convincing, immersive substance behind them, leaving the cliches to overwhelmingly dominate: lightsabre fights, laser guns, armies in the loading docks; cantina scenes with a variety of aliens; Chewbacca and Han Solo on the Millennium Falcon; Han Solo still being poor and getting in trouble by smuggling after, what, 50 years? WTF?; other people on the Millennium Falcon doing the exact same thing as prior movies; presenting lightsabres; lightsabres glowing on people's faces; outlandish lightsabre designs because A LIGHTSABRE ISN'T INTERESTING ENOUGH; force persuade used exactly the same way as before; a desert vendor oppressing the main character; R2D2 and C3PO; Jedi trainee going nuts and killing people; diverse rebels, further inbred by J.J. Abrams' inherent over-promotion of diversity in size, shape, color, and attractiveness -- not one that looks good; and, of all things, drastically changing ALL OTHER ASPECTS OF EDITING, such as pacing, everything about the camera-work: angles, stillness, shakiness, shot length, zoom amount, rotation, panning, artificial out-of-focus blur effects and colors except nostalgically keeping the traditional diagonal, inter-scene fade line. Why bother?

Other faults: The CG felt almost as bad as the latter prequels and was distracting -- still a far cry from LOTR CG after 10 years. The droid expended energy to appear indecisive, depressed, etc. when not in the presense of a human to whom to convey that emotion -- either poor programming, or, more likely, an oversight among many that J.J Abrams or Disney added when taking the probably-good screenplay and making it their own.

It felt as though the entire movie was originally well-conceived and would have been good in the hands of any competent director who knows how to bring empathy to characters and immersiveness to the audience. Then they deviated from the plan by hiring J.J. Abrams who removed the entire top coat, killing three decades of Star Wars lore for nothing: adding Nazi speeches to the stormtroopers, female stormtroopers, black stormtroopers, despite the Empire only allowing (speech-wise) white male humans; used 20-somethings to play all the main parts; used a central "no-name" stormtrooper character (e.g., "who could be any one of us") to follow since he wasn't confident following Jedi Rey despite making the new Jedi character female as a statement; dropped dozens of disgusting Star Wars cliches for "nostalgia" (listed above); choreographed lightsabres battles where there were probably none in the screenplay; put in excessive Han Solo and a pathetic performance of a now-"General" (as a statement) Princess Leia. The movie also suffered from a bad, forgettable soundtrack. They should have fired John Williams since he clearly wasn't able to compose a competent soundtrack for the prequels either. They didn't even get him to compose a replacement fanfare (something he, or someone else, could have easily done) -- this was a huge missed opportunity as it could have defined the entire Disney brand, had the movie been successful, and it could be used to replace the original trilogy fanfare, should copyright ever prevent their use.

It was shocking to see Han Solo sound excited after using Chewbacca's crossbow for apparently the first time, despite them being together for 50 years -- he would have used it on day #2 of them being together, while bored on the ship or on some planet. Totally implausible and immersion-shattering. It is inexcusable, and without words, to allow the non-Jedi to even think of wielding a lightsabre, much less, against a dark Jedi. As for the dark Jedi, or Lord Schnoz, as I like to call him, the guy was so poorly chosen and mis-directed, I missed Anakin from the prequels. By the end, I actually missed the originality, as bizarre and grating to watch as it was, from George Lucas, to this cliche-fest brought forth by J.J. Abrams. At least George Lucas didn't smear Star Wars cliches everywhere. Certainly the over-production, CG, and annoying sidekick aspects didn't go down much in the switch!

A complete re-skin of New Hope, right down to the giant planet destroying super weapon destroyed in a trench run. If that was the only issue, it wouldn't be so bad, but there are many more issues, including...

1. Lazy plot devices (i.e. R2D2 wakes up just in time, and Rey stumbles across Luke Skywalker's Lightsaber because it randomly decided to "called" to her...)

2. Generic Space Nazis...Called the "First Order" (As if the reference to Nazi's wasn't boring enough, they decided to title them "First Order" to confuse the Sh*** out of everyone)

3. "Mary Sue" Rey (she is flawless at everything, instantly, and nearly masters the force by the end of the movie.)

4. No brain-cells required (no politics, hidden secrets, or just about anything you could ponder on after the movie ended.)

The movie did do somethings right - the cast was well chosen, the visuals were stunning, and the filming style was perfect. It just could have done with a bit more originality and a focus on suspension of disbelief.

Stupid black troop who isn't jedi but is pro at fighting on swords (seriously?) etc. The movie just doesn't feel like something good, it's blank and boring. Better don't watch it or watch when the whole trilogy is out.

Slightly below average overall. Not in the same league as episodes 4-6 but better than episode 1 and about the same as episodes 2 and 3.

It does not follow any written Star Wars lore but has similarities to the comic books. Instead of following the stories, they went on a tangent and basically created an unoriginal and weak reboot of episode 4. The problem is that the character felt shallow. The charm of the old movies is that the actors brought the characters to life, whereas in this movie it felt like they were forced to follow a rigid script. The new characters are not bad, but they just don't illicit any emotion and the relationship between the trooper and the jedi just seems forced even though it started well enough. It just moved too fast and was not believable given each characters history and the situation.

The next problem is the story is weaker than episode 4. The antagonist is not intimidating in any way and the Hitler-like character and Nazi-like angles were not as good (nor as believable) as the struggle between the empire and rebels. The sith replacements (the 1st order) are just dumb... dumb dumb dumb and their lead was supposed to be very powerful and killed off all the jedi that Luke was teaching (which is why he went to exile) yet he cant even beat a non-jedi in hand-to-hand combat sometimes. The good jedi is equally ridiculous. She basically learns everything Anakin and Luke learned over decades, on her own, in a few days and was equal in lightsaber combat to a trained jedi killer. She makes Anakin & Luke look like chumps but whatever.

Then you have really dumb stuff... A mega-Death Star... really? Is this Dragon Ball Z? They should have just followed the comic books.

The special effects were modern, though not ground breaking, and there is no Jar Jar Binks so that was good. Lea and Han needed more screen time and deeper story but they chose to focus more on action scenes (a la Abrams movies).

This was clearly a money grab. It was not horrible but it was uninspired.

The biggest sin this movie commits is its lack of originality.

You can say what you want about George Lucas, but he at least had imagination. JJ Abrams is content to merely pander to fans of the Original Trilogy with its aesthetic trappings of it and lifting the plot of A New Hope entirely. It doesn't help that the big twist of the movie was so painfully, agonizingly obvious that I saw it coming from 12 parsecs away--I literally predicted exactly what would happen as soon as I heard JJ Abrams would be directing this movie. The only major change to the plot is that the role of Luke is shared by two new characters--Finn and Rey, who, of course, have a horribly forced romance. The movie does have some fun meta-commentary, but leans way too hard on it--JJ Abrams isn't half as clever as he thinks he is.

As far as pacing goes, the movie has none. The characters barely get a chance to relax or smile, so I ended up feeling tense the whole way through. The older movies gave you time to catch your breath.
The actors are at least bringing their A-game, with Harrison Ford being the highlight. It's just unfortunate that they weren't given any good material to work with. Finn in particular spends the entire movie with the same panicked expression. Boyega wears that expression well, but I don't want to look at it for two hours.

The visuals and the action are good by Hollywood standards, but nowhere near the high standard of the prequels, or even the standout moments of the Original Trilogy, like the Death star Trench Run. But what's truly unforgivable is that, for a movie that almost sells itself on practical effects, the CG aliens look like wet plastic. Admiral Ackbar looked better when he was a mask, thirty years ago!

Overall, I'd describe the movie as, "A New Hope, but more pretentious, and inferior in every respect." I left the theater feeling like I watched a giant fan film, and I'd have already forgotten everything that happened if this wasn't billed as the official continuation of the saga.

Thankfully, the next movie will be directed by a better filmmaker, so hopefully that one will capture my imagination like every other movie in this series has.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The 4 is mainly for BB8, Boyega and Ridley. But it kinda makes any victories the good-guys had in the original trilogy a bit pointless doesn't it? Empire's back (First Order); Death Star's back (Starkiller Base); Luke has seemingly trained only one dude in 30 years since ROTJ and that dude has gone bad; You can learn to use the force, and a light-sabre, in about 5 minutes as evidenced by Rey - Luke and Vadar and the rest must really be slow learners; Han is a smuggler again and he and Leia's relationship is a mess; Sith lords can use the force to read minds now - why didn't Vadar just "mind-meld" the Rebel Base info out of Leia's head in ep IV? And all this talk of getting rid minimising CGI only to have the main villain and a yoda-wannabe needlessly animated.

I think this is my problem with Abrams reboots: He has so much respect for the franchise but close to zero respect for the people that worked on it before him.

The film is aestechically pleasing and the acting is alright for the most part, but the story, writing and directing are beneath contempt. The camera shots are often lackluster or simply awkward. The writing is just plain boring and oftentimes also absolutely ridiculous as well as unbelieveable, there is also absolutely no suspense in it whatsoever. The last scene in the movie was great as well as two or three others, but everything else is either mediocre or tripe. The editing was also obviously rushed which gives the film an unfinished feel.

I am convinced that Abrams as a director as well as his fellow producers were a very bad choice after watching this movie. It can't compete with the Original Trilogy in any way and is only on par with the Prequel Trilogy at best. Not to mention that the Prequel Trilogy was at least original, SW7 however often feels like a rehash or a remake of A New Hope, which is laughably awkward for a fan of the series.

4/10 - It is only slightly better than The Phantom Menace, which is very disappointing.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After so many years of waiting it is a thrill to inject into the arm a new film in the franchise. The ST: TFA fix is short lived. Like a sugar rush. Inexorably, time ticks on. The high subsides and one is left, well, empty.

It's difficult to imagine all the talent in H'Wood and beyond combined their creative juices to make this very familiar tasting drink. In fact, it's Episode IV Cola in a new, politically correct container. Wait! At the helm, JJ Abrams, rapist of the Star Trek franchise and all-around hack. That explains it.

SW: TFA is too long, too homage-y (was there really a reason to crank up the chess game on the Falcon?), and absent an original idea for your pleasure. Thank the Maker there were no Jar Jars. That's not exactly high praise. Why exactly does Kylo Ren wear a Vaderesque mask? Mr. V's mask was utilitarian. Questions as these seep in while scanning for the Civic in the parking lot.

Cynics crow SW: TFA is a money making machine. Rabid fans stand ready to eviscerate those not drinking the Kool Aid. More moderate fans might pine for the time their virgin eyes watched desperate Luke consider his future in the twins setting before him on the sandy horizon to John William's brilliant score. Those who venerate will. Those who grew up in the flickering light of the preceding trilogies might take pause and remember. Remember.

Sure it was fun. Glad to see some of the old crew again. There was emotion and humor. Too, there was promise. It evaporated like an ice cube in the Tattoine desert. For that, Mr. Abrams, you will not be forgiven. Place your voodoo doll of Abrams for Ep VII next to Lucas' doll for Eps I and II. Feel free to stick pins at your convenience.

Some films become cultural touchstones. "Star Wars: A New Hope" is one. SW: TFA is not. It's just another film. Perhaps the failure is the audience. With lofty expectation there's bound to be disappointment. Maybe not. SW: TFA wrought heartache.

The main antagonist is a spoiled brat that has tempter tantrums, ( he had it rough mommy and daddy were so mean they didnt let him play with uncle Luke.) So lame.
The story is just retarded, So the rebels won but they are still rebels??? and the bad guys lost so they have to make another newer death star that is 9-11 times a hundred!!!! cant the bad guys or the writers for that matter just come up with a new way to show how bad they are??
The players are just rehashed redux of the original players new luke is a female new leia is a dude who used to be a storm trooper new vaders a big baby like the old vader ( if we watch the last 3 awful films. )
I have lost any hope for this franchise, it is really just a big wealth generating machine for disney.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I left a theater after the movie ended that was completely silent.

Sure there were a few chuckles during the movie.

Not once was there cheering like during the prequels.

That there to me proves this was a lesser movie.

I could of forgiven Disney/Abrams for the rehash of A New Hope in this movie.

What could not forgive them for and what truly ruined The Force Awakens for me was the lack of emotion all through out the movie. It was a boring ride from start to finish.

Those points coupled with the pointless death of Han Solo (or supposed death), nothing but lame jokes, garbage dialogue, and the overall poor acting, I have to say perhaps my sights were far too high.

I liked the EU universe far better for many things, and disliked parts of it as well.

That being stated Disney would of been better off following the books in the EU instead of this pile of trash.

The only real saving grace was characters from the original trilogy. I was excited to see Chewie, Han, Leia, R2, and C-3P0. It was a bit of a slap in the face to only see Luke 2 times for a total of about 60 secs in the movie as well.

The biggest disappointment for me in the movie was Kylo Ren. He started off looking very powerful and interesting much like Vader. There was so much hype about him, and I got suckered in by it.Then of course all too quickly he turns into a pathetic child who throws temper tantrums and is so emotionally weak he cant control the force when he needs too.

I gave the movie a 4 out of ten due to the fact it is still star wars but it doesn't even hold up to the prequels. That is the worst part about the let down about The Force Awakens. Disney/Abrams could of made a excellent foray in to the new EU universe simply by using much of the lore that was in place from the books.
Instead they took from the existing movies and failed.

Lets hope they make the next movie truly interesting and memorable.
