The Force Awakens is by far my favorite Star Wars movie of all time! I never liked how Luke was so timid in the originals and the prequels was not memorable. However, I absolutely love this movie! I saw it in theaters 9 times.

The problem is, it's just Episode IV but the characters are switched around a bit. There are some new roles, and some returning characters, but the plot and characters are so incredibly derivative of A New Hope that it's hard not to factor in. However, it is still a very well-made film, and adds just enough new stuff to feel like it's worthy to exist. Expand

We can spend all our time debating over semantics and minutia over canon and lore, comparing which movie makes more sense. I didn't watch star wars until I was 18 when I was a senior in high school, so I don't have a bunch of nostalgia for one movie or another. Personally, this movie was an enjoyable experience. I had a fun time watching this movie in theaters and the times I've seen it at home. It's very much like Episode 4, if not a bit less wondrous than we may have experienced when first watching it. There are few perfect movies out there, and no perfect Star Wars IPs, but I enjoyed this movie from start to finish and watched it again without feeling the movie was boring or contrived. Give the movie a chance, if nothing else as an actual movie first and an installment of Star Wars second, it'll do you a lot of good. Expand

I saw 'Rogue One' a while back and thought it was ok but I haven't seen other Star Wars films (that I can remember). I'm glad I gave this a go - I wasn't sure I could necessarily follow the main gist of the story but I did actually. The CGI is very good/impressive, as you'd expect. Its pretty engrossing and of course I enjoyed watching BB-8 - gotta love a cute miniature robot type being!. I think you could enjoy this if your not a massive fan of the franchise - its an enjoyable, entertaining sci-fi fantasy film with some decent CGI and a good cast, so it's worth a watcg, yeah. I would recommend this film, yes. Expand

The film's beats and plot points feel incredibly similar to the OT from the very first scene. The film never really establishes anything new because it strives so hard to be unique. People that claim it is a remake are not quite as far off, in my opinion. I was also let down by the character of Finn. Boyega does a terrific job, but his is a very underdeveloped and erratic character. felt more like comedy relief than anything else, which is unfortunate because he almost deserves to be a lead character. A new story about old stories. The obvious thing is that the new film of the new trilogy looks very nice, even when compared with the films of the 2000s, and especially when compared with the original trilogy. But, the story itself very strongly in some places begins to resemble the "New Hope". There are Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker and others in this film, but in a more different form, which is why history begins to repeat itself accordingly. But even with these moments, you want to watch the new Star Wars, because it's all just as beautiful and interesting. New characters have entered this huge universe well and I hope they will take root well in it. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I love the characters and their portrayals, but the plot seems lacking to me, especially with the super weapon and returning to the situation in ANH. I would have preferred a different choice. But all the characters do a great job. Especially Kylo, Rey, Han, Finn, and Chewie. Han's performance is fantastic especially on the bridge. Chewie's reaction to the death in that scene is great. I love Rey's clear concern for Finn, i just wish it had remained in the other films and Finn hadn't been sidelined almost completely Expand

Especially 'Empire Strikes Back' while considering 'A New Hope' a genre landmark. Didn't think the prequel films were that bad personally, but they had a lot wrong with them and were a long way from great, especially 'Attack of the Clones'.

Despite seeing 'Star Wars: Episode VII- The Force Awakens' around the time it first came out (maybe a little after), there was a long time of being put off by the vitriolic hate it's gotten here and the practical war zone there is in order to review it (even when it was critically acclaimed). Finally mustering the courage, count me in as somebody who loved 'Star Wars: Episode VII- The Force Awakens'. A masterpiece? No. Better than the prequels? Absolutely, and although some may disagree this is saying a lot. The best 'Star Wars' film since 'The Return of the Jedi?' Yes.

'Star Wars: Episode VII- The Force Awakens' is not the most original plot-wise. It has been criticised for being a re-hash of 'A New Hope', understandably. However, instead of being done in a cheap and slap-in-the-face way, it felt like an affectionate and nostalgic homage. Exemplified by bringing back major characters from the original trilogy in supporting roles. JJ Abrams, and this may be considered blasphemy, does a much better job here than he did with his 'Star Trek' reboot films, here he keeps the original spirit of the original trilogy intact while giving the film its own identity at the same time.

While it certainly dazzles in spectacle and action, 'Star Wars: Episode VII- The Force Awakens' doesn't feel too big, too noisy or too chaotic at the expense of creating memorable characters, a fun story and brains and heart. The characters are memorable with easily identifiable leads, the original trilogy characters bringing a lot of affectionate nostalgia and a well executed if not iconic (not by Darth Vader standards anyhow) villain in Kylo Ren (unpredictable and dangerous but feeling he is morally justified).

The story lacks originality but more than makes up for it in energy, non-stop heart-thumping thrills and excitement, generosity, a cheerfulness that is positively space operatic, vibrant charm and a few fresh twists along the way. In many ways it is a celebration of the universe while also an expansion of it. It is sometimes sentimental but never overly so, one crucial death scene is just heart-wrenching (particularly Chewbacca's reaction) and doesn't feel like a slap in the face to the character in question.

Could the villains have been better written? Ren is fine but Snoke only just about works as a character thanks to the visual effects and especially the powerfully enigmatic with a touch of vulnerability performance of Andy Serkis, other than that the character is underwritten. Also felt that Gwendoline Christie's character was unnecessary, so limited was her screen time.

Visually, 'Star Wars: Episode VII- The Force Awakens' is a triumph. It is gorgeously shot and designed with Abrams' visual storytelling shining far more here than it has in other films he's done. The special effects are a dazzling marvel. John Williams delivers yet another rousing score that has its own character but cleverly includes the well-known iconic themes from the previous films. Thank goodness that the dialogue contains little to none of the cheesiness heard in the prequels, and it even has more layers than that of the original trilogy.

Acting also shines, with winning charismatic performances from John Boyega and particularly Daisy Ridley. Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher still have it, while Max Von Sydow shows himself to be a master of gestures and eye contact speaking louder than words. Adam Driver is a suitably menacing Ren and Serkis makes much of his somewhat underwritten character. Oscar Isaac gives a typically strong performance.

In conclusion, a great film, the best 'Star Wars' film since 'The Return of the Jedi' and one of the best of the saga too. 9/10 Bethany Cox

While it is a bit unoriginal in story, it does make up for this in a successful introduction of new characters and re-introduction into legacy favorites (even if they don’t get equal attention). It is a movie made to delight the inner child at heart, paying homage to what has come before, while setting up new stakes and further adventures for a new generation of fans. While not all the new characters get equal development, Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver are standout performances with the respective roles. Driver embodies a perfect blend of pent of rage and vulnerability, as Ridley is enduring and charismatic to a fault. Harrison Ford’s reprisal of Han Solo in over 30 years is a joy and blast, and it does feel like “we’re home” just like he said in that teaser. The Force Awakens feels like a reunion with old friends, and it proves Star Wars is still very relevant to fans and audiences. Expand

It is a tad disappointing that Episode VII borrows heavily from Episode IV in terms of its story delivery, but honestly, there was probably no other way to have been able to get the franchise up and going again with the same attention to care and detail as the previous films, specifically, the first three made between 1977-1983. An enjoyable beginning to the sequel trilogy!

'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' entertained me. It felt like a fresh direction for the overall franchise, which I guess is little surprise given George Lucas was not a major part of this. I actually didn't notice a great deal of difference, or at least as much as I thought there'd be given his exclusion.

I enjoyed seeing the new cast merge with the old trio, even if there are only small appearances from two of the latter. Daisy Ridley and John Boyega are excellent additions, both give top performances - I will say I didn't sense major chemistry between the two, but I assume that'll come soon enough. Adam Driver, meanwhile, suits his role nicely.

Original trio Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill all feature, though - as alluded to - Ford is the only one that has a major part to play. Either way, it's cool seeing them back in the franchise.

Everything else about the film satisfied me, I'm not saying it's perfect - esp. the plot - but I found it perfectly fun to watch. For me, it's a strong start for this era of 'Star Wars'.

The movie when i saw it in theaters genuinely got me excited for what was next. I’d probably be even more fond of this movie, if TLJ wasnt so bad. Expand

Previously known characters are well integrated. I also like the dynamic and mystery around the two new young main protagonists so far, who seem to build a counterforce to each other. Dialogues aren't always thought through though and sometimes, the motivation of certain actions is completely unclear. In these moments, the viewer almost has the impression as if something was cut out and they've just missed the last 5 minutes. Most likely, this is just plot armor and these dialogues and actions just reflect an idea of the writers that had to happen but no one thought how to show the viewer why these things had to happen. In the first part, the viewer might not be very annoyed by this, though, because it fits well into the overall mystery that the viewer might expect to be resolved in the future parts. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Force Awakens is a very "safe" movie with which to start a new Star Wars trilogy. It is similar to A New Hope, which was the first movie in the original trilogy and it was also financially succesful and very well received, so it makes sense they have a lot of elements in common.

The Force Awakens is basically A New Hope, but with modern effects and new characters. And I love the new characters. Rey is a likable and charismatic protagonist. She's a scavanger on a desert planet, waiting for her parents to return. Kylo Ren is the "new Darth Vader" and I find him interesting. He worships Darth Vader and he's young, angry and brash. The way he stops a blaster shot is cool as hell. His red lightsaber is also unique. Finn is another interesting character. What's special about him is that he's initially a "bad" guy. He's a stormtrooper, but he defects and joins the good guys. And there are certain moments when his knowledge about the New Order comes in handy, so I thought that was very cool. The story itself is great. As I said earlier, it's similar to the story of A New Hope and I don't mind that. The big twist is that Kylo Ren kills his own father, Han Solo.

I'm a Star Wars fan and I enjoyed The Force Awakens. It's what I expected. I had fun watching it and I recommend it to every person who is interested in Sci-Fi movies with a dash of space magic.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So what if it's familiar? So what if it follows the same template as A New Hope. That doesn't deflate my enjoyment of this movie, or keep me from believing that this is the best SW film Disney has offered us. In this movie we are introduced to a new generation of heroes. Rey is a scavenger who was abandoned on the harsh desert planet Jakku by her parents. Finn was a stromtrooper who was stolen from a family he's never known, but chooses to run rather than slaughter innocents for his superiors. Poe is the Resistance's best pilot who is sent to retrieve the films maguffin: a map leading to the last Jedi Luke Skywalker. We are also rejoined with iconic legacy characters: Han Solo, Leia Organa, Chewbacca, and kind of R2,3PO,and Master Luke. They must go up against the First Order with has arisen from the ashes of the Galactic Empire and decides to one up them by creating a even bigger Death Star. Great job guys you really did it this time didn't you. Anyway this new regime is headed my Supreme Leader Snoke who has his own wannabe Vader in Han and Leia's son: Kylo Ren/Ben Solo. What this film does right is the characters, action, fan service, and over all entertainment value, however I must say that the film's greatest strength in sticking to the formula of the original is also it's greatest weakness. It fails to establish the relations between the all the factions, leaving that up to the novels and visual dictionaries to do, it also can be a bit convenient at times: Han finding the Falcon and R2 showing up with the map, and finally the inclusion of the Starkiller Base doesn't connect to the main plot line.

But other then that this is a Star Wars movie that can be loved by all fans of the franchise both new and old.

If you’re looking for something completely new then I’d look elsewhere, if you’re looking just to be entertained then this surely fits the bill. It does for me at least. JJ Abrams lacks ambition with his storytelling but makes up for it in general with his delivery and new set of characters. Aesthetically this looks and feels like classic Star Wars; there’s powerful and, for some, emotive imagery plus it’s a breezy affair with great action and humour throughout. It does go too far with its simplicity and for me the final third of the movie is far too similar and done not as good as the classic 1977 original. However this is a refreshing back to basics for Star Wars with interesting new characters, particularly Rey and Kylo Ren, and old faces, Han Solo. The Force Awakens is not as iconic as Empire, as heavy hitting as Sith or is able to deliver the high thrills of Jedi, however it is still a nostalgic thrill ride that entertains immensely and what it does well it does very well. Long time fans may find themselves craving more whilst for a new audience this should do quite nicely. Expand

After the prequels we lost hope that there would be Star Wars movies that feel like the original trilogy. This movie gave us fans what we had hoped for and yes I admit that this is basically like a remake of episode 4 A New Hope. It uses the same structure, similar characters and story arcs with good variations. This is a two-sided thing. It can be rated as homage that wants to get the fans back or as creative sellout. You can never please all fans. Some want changes and new stuff others want only more of the same with at max slight variations. For me I like the mixture of old and new and the good set ups for the follow up movies. I could not imagine that everything was wasted there but that will be described in my review for The Last Jedi and has nothing to do with this movie. I will explain what this movie does well: The set up and characters. You create a new scenario and nothing is more interesting than that Luke Skywalker has vanished without a trace as the remnants of the Empire have grown in power as the First Order and threaten the galaxy again. It creates a mystery that we care for and a threat we know is a deadly menace. Of cause there is the split in the former rebels that formed the New Republic. Leia was cut of from power as the other leaders became lazy and blind for the threat. She had created her own organization with those loyal to her or aware of the threat. They have not learned from the past. Again something that is realistic, believable and creates a good setting. The story is about the new characters and their journeys. Let start with Daisy Ridley as Rey. She is a strong and good character that was harden by the battle for survival on a dessert plant. There is the critique that she is a Mary Sue character (= Perfect and flawless avatar that is far better than everyone else). I will defend that this is not true in this movie. With the follow up movies I must admit defeat. There she is a Mary Sue. She gets thrown in something she would have never expected and grows on the journey. There is John Boyega as Finn. I would say he is the hidden star of the movie. He is a Stormtropper that is horrified by the First Order and defects to atone for his sins. You can see his struggles and I will praise the actor. Then you have Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron. He is an ace pilot and star of the rebels;-). For the bad guys you have the big bad Supreme Leader Snoke played by Andy Serkis. He is like it should be in the first movie of a trilogy. Mysterious, powerful, impressive and threatening. Again a good set up because you want to know more about him. Then you have Adam Driver as Kylo Ren. He is a Darth Vader fanboy that wants to be like him. That sounds negative but is actually good. He fights the battle of the persons he is vs the person he wants to be. Then another good new character. Domhall Gleeson as General Hux. He is a high ranking leader in the First Order and a rival to Kylo Ren. He is really skilled (got demoted to incompetent moron in the sequel) and has the disadvantage that he can not use the Force. Their dynamic and rivalry is remarkable and again a good set up for the future. The old characters were used less but mostly good. Leia had a fitting role and does a really good job as aged but still will-strong leader. I must mention that Han was discarded after he had a satisfying role. The most fitting description I have seen was on YouTube at the Nostalgic Critic. He made a parody that Leia made Han sign a live insurance and gave him a red shirt before he left (Dialog: Wrong franchise. No, also rebooted by J. J. Abrams so it is valid;-). It is so true and foreseeable. Chewbacca is Chewbacca and always good. Overall I will praise J. J. Abrams. He knows how to start a trilogy and the set ups are superb. This had so much potential and had revitalized the Star Wars movies. But then came the sequels and I must warn you. I would rather watch Jar Jar a Star Wars story or the in famous Star Wars Christmas special (George Lucas would destroy every copy if he could do it). Bonus Star Wars knowledge: There is the Darth Jar Jar theory that he is a master manipulator and Sith Master that uses this persona as disguise. There is a lot to it. He falls up the ranks, is always at the right places at the right time, shows some incredible abilities and survives dangerous encounters that got other far more capable people killed. Just watch the video. It is the most you can get out of that character and was entertaining. Expand

It feels like classic Star Wars, but with new characters and new settings. The reason why this movie has gotten so much praise from both critics and fans is because it’s a great movie. There really aren’t many people who dislike this movie for good reasons. Most of the hate this movie gets is from conformists who like to trash popular things just to look “cool”.

There is also a subsection of anti-SJWs who feel they can’t like this movie because they see it as “feminist propaganda”. Look, I’m very anti-SJW, and I think modern feminism is a joke. However, there is no SJW or feminist agenda in The Force Awakens. Just because a movie has a female lead doesn’t mean it’s “woke”. Calm down, anti-SJWs! You make us all look bad!

As for the people who dislike the movie because you think it’s derivative, that’s fine. That is a valid criticism. Even I acknowledge the fact that there are a few similarities between this movie and A New Hope. It doesn’t bother me, though; I personally see it as paying homage to the original trilogy, and I really don’t think the two movies are all THAT similar. There’s nothing wrong with disliking a movie because you find it flawed. But disliking a movie just because it’s trendy to hate it or because it has a female lead is just stupid.

The cast and the performances (Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Harrison Ford) were great, the characters were grounded and felt actually interesting while maintaining a skillful balance between nostalgia and future. Everything about this movie is just so perfectly executed and played out. As I said, the characters had real conflict and emotions that the audience connects with and relate to, literally no character in this film was uninteresting by any means. I could not believe how good this film turned out to be, its easily one of the best films 2015 and Star Wars has to offer and would recommend for both new fans and old. Expand

I think for what JJ Abrams and Disney had to do (which was bridge the end of a saga and introduce new characters, good and bad) they did a good job. The similarities to the 4th episode ( A New Hope) are explained in the 1 hour long "Making of" documentary. Some things, like the new Cantina, they felt they had to put in to make the film feel Star Wars-y. The visuals are amazing, the actors are great, and Han departs with significant emotional weight. If he had died without any sacrifice it would have felt lame. I think the movie feels like it does because it is a bridge. 8 may be the film we have always wanted.... Expand

Rian Johnson wanted to show with The Last Jedi how awesome and outstanding he is as a director and writer. Yes, he will go down in the history books, but not as an ingenious director, but as a director who has brought one of the most beloved franchise to fall. The genius of his subversive and with plotholes and stupid humor only so brimming film is that he has thus also damaged all previous films. If you've seen The Last Jedi, you'll never want to watch a Star Wars movie again. I hope Rian Johnson will NEVER come anywhere near a movie set, either as a director or as a writer. It would be a great relief for everyone! By the way: I liked The Force Awakens, it was a fine start for the new trilogy. Tragic, everything is ruined now! Expand

Not worth listening to all the sequel haters that cling to the original trilogy and won't expand their interests. The character development is fantastic. The relationships between Finn and Poe, and Finn and Rey are very well done. Han Solo brought back feels just like the Han Solo we all remembered and loved. Kylo Ren is an intriguing villain. The action sequences are done very well, it feels like a pure star wars film. The film though does lack some originality as the plot mirrors that of A New Hope too much. JJ Abrams played it very safe, although there's enough new moments in this movie that allow me to forgive the lack of originality. The ending duel between Finn and Rey vs Kylo is great too. An empty shell of a film that pisses on the lore of its predecessors out of simple laziness, with a cheap copycat storyline (plagiarism of a film from your own series), goofy slapstick humor, single-facial-expression protagonist who succeeds in everything effortlessly, and other issues. This could be a 10/10 if the plot wasn't a rehash of the original 1977 Star Wars, it almost feels like a remake of that movie, which would be fine if it was marketed that way but it isn't, but that doesn't make it a bad movie, it just feels like they played it safe with this. Sure, also some kind of illogical things like Rey just knows how to use the force without any training or things like those but those are minor things that maybe hardcore fans will find annoying, not me, but I noted that.
I like the fact that this movie almost feels like a semi-reboot, because it's basically Star Wars for a new generation, we see new heroes in a new story to save the universe again.

And thank God that this wasn't a borderline cartoon to sell Star Wars toys like the prequels were, the prequels are cartoons for me because they were filled with cheesy dialogue that sometimes became cringe, melodramatic and over-the-top acting and awful CGI that didn't age well. Sure this movie still has some cheesy stuff but it's not as bad as the prequels were.

I love this movie! As a fan of Star Wars movies and good movies in general, I really consider this an amazing movie worth watching. Obviuously it's not Oscar-worthy and we all know that some people might not be interested in movies like Star Wars but if you like Star Wars or action space movies, this is a must-see.

It's good, but it falls short on story. If it wasn't as much of a ripoff of A New Hope, then it would be much better. I can understand why it's almost a direct copy, but whatever. We got what we got.

The Force Awakens borrows heavily from all three movies in the original trilogy, particularly A New Hope. While enjoyable, the movie is not groundbreaking. It's 'good' but not 'spectacular' as I had hoped it would be.

Sure, the plot feels like A New Hope but it’s really not all that similar. It’s called paying homage. The Force Awakens for me, revived the Star Wars franchise after the dissapointing prequel trilogy. This movie had great characters, amazing effects, fun action sequences, and a great story. The only thing I didn’t like about this film was starkiller base, which is basically a third Death Star but bigger. So overall I love this movie and I think The Force Awakens is the best Star Wars movie that Disney has released so far. Expand
