A near-flawless movie. Well-written. Good characters. Fantastic visual design and jaw-dropping special effects for the time that still honestly look great today. Good acting. It captures a wide range of emotions, all of them perfectly - fear, sadness, happiness, humor, adventure, tension, and, above all, magic... The main characters have grown so iconic that it's difficult to remember how amazing it is how awesome they are, and how well they work together as characters. Luke, Leia, Han, Chewie, Obi-Wan, Vader... They all work so perfectly together. And that third act... The trench run is a truly astounding sequence, and is the most tense action scene in a film that I've ever seen. It's still near- perfect, even 46 years later. A fantastic film, and only improved by later installments. Expand

This movie started it all. What is not to like? It's basically a cowboy movie with light sabers. Todays Star Wars movies have no strength to them. The original six told stories that the audience could see growing before your eyes.

Anyone who enjoys science fiction should have seen this fantastic film (or any who enjoy cinema). Harrison Ford and Alec Guinness in particular stand out among the excellent cast. This film is a masterpiece that never gets old. Among George Lucas's best pieces (followed close by the Raider of The Lost Ark). The Star Wars Universe is expansive, magnificent, and full of options, therefore this film truly marks the start of the greatest film franchise of all time. Even if several of the scenes felt avant-garde at the time they were released in theatres, the public nonetheless praised them highly. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If I had to sum it up in one word, superlative would be my answer. I saw the film for the first time three months ago and loved it, and since then I have watched all the Star Wars movies. I was disappointed with the prequels (Attack of the Clones was my least favourite), but this, Return of the Jedi and Empire Strikes Back were perfection.

I have to say that the film looks absolutely amazing even after thirty plus years, with highly imaginative sets and dazzling special effects. And the action sequences were superbly choreographed and brisk, the Death Star climax was a knockout. The music by John Williams is absolutely outstanding, by far one of his more exciting and rousing scores. The story is fast-paced, intelligent and has an essence of sophistication, and the screenplay is sharp and decisive.

And the performances were flawless. In the prequels I had problems relating to some of the performers, namely Hayden Christensen as Anakin. Here, all the actors played their parts with superlative skill. Alec Guiness, one fine actor and will be sorely missed was a standout, likewise with Peter Cushing and Harrison Ford(hilarious here). Carrie Fisher was a fine Princess Leia, spunky, beautiful and sexy, and Mark Hamill was a completely likable Luke. And the villain Darth Vader, without doubt one of the best and in-depth villains in cinematic history, and James Earl Jones's deep booming voice was perfect for the character.

All in all, a definite sci-fi classic, that blew me away. 10/10 Bethany Cox

After all, I was tired of always running away from any discussion regarding these movies. So finally after having downloaded all the movies I began from A New Hope (I didn't know the order, I just guessed that since it's the oldest so it has to be seen first. If I hadn't seen that I'd have started with Phantom Menace). And I'm really mad that I never saw these before.

Star Wars is like a dream come true for someone like me, who is so much obsessed with astronomy. I have always liked stories in which there is a simple character who is living an easy life, completely secluded from the rest of the world when someone decides to take them on an adventure. It happened in Assassin's Creed: Odyssey and Lord of the Rings, but this is the first time it was ever shown on a big screen. I can very well imagine how excited everyone must have been back then. There are all kinds of interesting characters like Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Chewbacca, Princess Leia and of course, the iconic Darth Vader. Today these are the same characters I think of when someone says "Space adventure".

The action of this movie is the selling point. Although we can see the campiness and that there is always a jump cut between the Jedi jumping and landing, it is not very hard to watch like another big CGI movie franchise we all know. The characters have some depth to them, which is what makes them so interesting to watch. I really liked Han Solo's entrance, the way he was gambling in the bar and then suddenly attacked the enemies with Chewbacca. Every time Darth Vader appeared on screen it felt like so dramatic. It feels fresh even today.

The problem with this movie is, however, that it's too old. It is way too oldie, if that makes sense. All the characters talk like the old movies, which is hard for a non-English speaker like me to relate to since I don't see someone talking while barely moving their mouth the way Harrison Ford does, or always have the teach showing even with the mouth closed like Mark Hamill does. Another example can be like whenever they hide from Stormtroopers and talk to each other in a low voice, Chewbacca keeps moaning loudly but the Stormtroopers don't hear him. When he did it the first time I thought Han would probably ask him to keep his voice down or the Stormtroopers will notice them. For some reason I don't feel like watching old movies. They make me feel sleepy. This is the reason why I dozed off watching it and then watched the remaining after waking up.

I consider Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope to be the movie which created the divide between Hollywood and Bollywood. Before that both of them were going almost pretty much equal. But after 1977 while Star Wars helped Hollywood grow, Bollywood remained stuck in the same era or rather should I say, went back in time. All the big CGI movies that we see today are indirectly a result of Star Wars being the success that it was. I really hope the franchise returns back to its roots.

A quality start to the franchise.

I say start, I guess that depends on the (seemingly) controversial way of watching these films - I've decided on release order, so it's the beginning for me anyway. I've heard a lot about 'Star Wars' so I am expecting big things, this didn't disappoint whatsoever.

I unquestionably enjoyed this! If I didn't know this was released in 1977 I would never have guessed, it still holds up astonishingly well. The special effects are spectacular for the vast, vast majority; even the stuff that perhaps hasn't aged as supremely still looks superb.

The cast are a joy. I actually wouldn't say any performance sensationally stood out, but all the actors and all the characters are so much fun to watch together. Mark Hamill is impressive as Luke, Harrison Ford is entertaining as Han and Carrie Fisher is super as Leia. Credit also to James Earl Jones and Alec Guinness, among others. Despite not watching until now, I literally already knew all of the character names - shows how timeless these are.

The plot makes for top notch viewing, I found the pacing to be particularly spot on. And how about that score? Stupendous! I really have no negatives for this, I'm sure it isn't perfect but I had a very fun time with it.

A classic. The movie started it all.
The imagination to create a whole universe, from it's characters to creatures, it's enviroments to planets was like nothing ever committed to celluloid at the time.
Must see.

If you had to explain the premise of the original Star Wars to someone who had never heard of the franchise, you might find it somewhat hard to make the plot sound like anything extraordinary. Rebels in space fight to free the galaxy from a tyrannical dictatorship? That’s the best I can do...
Like the narrative, the characters aren’t really all that complex. Luke is the noble hero who achieves greatness from small beginnings. Vader’s helmet is all that prevents him from being the traditional mustache twirling villain. Leia is that helpless damsel who turns out to be quite the opposite. Han is the scumbag smuggler who behind all his rude remarks is really a good guy. Old Ben is the kind mentor who acts as a sort of father figure. These archetypes further reinforce my point that there is little actual complexity to the film. No matter how hard you try you cannot disguise what the original Star Wars actually is. A swashbuckling adventure of good vs evil, and a journey to discover oneself.
It is all of these familiar themes that we’ve experienced before that culminate to into something truly magical. It reminds us of the imagination we once had as a child, with its innocence and simplicity, which is why it is often mistaken for a film solely aimed at children. I mentioned before that most of the characters are just archetypes, however this doesn’t mean they are nothing more than just clichés. Vader may sound like a pretty typical bad guy, but the contrast of his slick black armor with his thousands of white painted legions, and the superb voice acting from James Earl Jones make him extremely intimidating. Leia and Han may appear simple at first but their sharp, witty dialogue and conflicting personalities make them a perfect pair. I could go on and on about how everything in the movie has more to it than meets the eye, but for the sake of preventing this from being a rave I’ll leave at that. Of course you can’t talk about the originals without mentioning the revolutionary visuals, that inspired generations of filmmakers. The practical effects, whether it’s the models built for the ships or the the painted on color of the lightsabers, are absolutely fantastic, and are one of the main reasons the film has aged so beautifully. Coupled with the amazing score by John Williams and you have an atmosphere that really draws you in, and makes you want more even after it has finished. In my review for The Rise of Skywalker I ranted about how poorly the score was used, and I stand by that statement. The reason I was so displeased by it was because all the leitmotifs established in the original trilogy were used just to add music to the background, rather than signify a recurring character or theme. In the original Star Wars, Williams creates numerous memorable leitmotifs to represent the individual characters, the most notable ones being the imperial match for Vader, and Luke’s theme (the title music). Aside from that we have the extremely well known force theme, which has now been reused in pretty much every piece of Star Wars media imaginable. For every one of these leitmotifs Williams implements extremely simple but effective musical techniques in order for them to have the desired effect on the audience, for example, in Luke’s theme, Williams uses ascending leaps of perfect 4ths and 5ths to convey a feeling of bravery and heroism.
Before I finish up I would like to talk about the finale of the film: The Death Star run. I personally think that this is the most pivotal sequence in the entire franchise, as not only is it the moment that signifies a tipping of the scales in the war against the empire, but it is also the point where Luke finally has the chance to prove his worth, completing his journey from zero to hero. Whilst I am glad that the next two movies came, it is because of this that I believe that Star Wars didn’t need sequels, as Luke’s most essential arc is complete. On top of the incredible storytelling at this point the Death Star run also looks fantastic, and I love the constant killing off of fellow pilots in order to increase the tension. Ultimately, the original Star Wars is a beautifully constructed masterpiece and easily my favorite in the franchise. It’s delightful simplicity, wonderful storytelling and memorable characters are why it is so deeply imbedded in our hearts, and it is one of the most revolutionary sci fi movies of all time.

Classic is a Classic.

Star Wars became lager than life and was unrivalled until the Marvel cinematic universe came along. For me as many other the original trilogy is pure nostalgia and fun childhood memories. It gave us something to relate, discuss, play and of cause to rewatch. We build Star Destroyers and Millennium Falcons with Lego before there was a licence. We fought light sabre battles and dreamed to explore the galaxy. Later we started reading books / comics as the expanded universe made Star Wars even better. The Thrawn trilogy by Timothy Zahn and the X-Wing books are still fun to read and a good recommendation for fans (Timothy Zahns new trilogy is maybe even better). You notice that I didn't talk about the movie. That is because the reality can not compete with the memory and nostalgia. We have in Germany the term “Everything was better in the good old days” to explain why thinks were better in our memories. This doesn't mean it was bad. It means that the movie is at least an 11/10 for us in our memory. I will give a 10/10 no matter what because nothing can beat nostalgia and fun childhood memories. The original trilogy became pop culture history and is a must see. There is no argument that can reverse this statement for fans like us;-). Expand
