A mostly successful reboot of the Star Trek universe. Full of action and excitement, this has the potential to start the inevitable series in very promising directions.

The performances were excellent, and the action was nicely paced without sacrificing opportunities for meaningful character development. Let's face it, though: Star Trek was "dead in the water", to use an old nautical term, because the story was old and lacking bold ideas. The series needed someone who knows how to make bold entertainment, and JJ Abrams is truly that man. I attribute most of the success of this film to him. Expand

My Brother and I would hunker down on the floor three feet away from the TV when the original series was new. As sceptical as I was the idea, writing, story line and actors all made this new lease on life for the Enterprise very enjoyable. I watch an average of three new movies a week on DVD and this is the first time I have watched the same movie over again. I watched it three times and each time I saw something I missed the first time. I was however a tad amiss with the relationship between Spock and Uhura but by the third time watching it was intrigued by the idea. A must see if you enjoy Sci Fi, action, drama and great directing. My second movie to watch over and over again will be the Harry Potter DVD coming out this month. Enjoy all. Expand

Excellent reboot of the revered franchise--Spock Prime is crucial to the film, he is truly its heart and soul and the bridge between the old Trek and the new Trek. I look forward to the next journey.

Excellent movie! Haven't seen many mention this, but the enterprise can really do some damage!! Not like the older movies that were limited with FX? But this enterprise can lay down some serious fire! It was great to see! Fun movie for all!

It is the first movie in a long long time where I left the theater being fully satisfied, no complaints at all. The perfect Hollywood action blockbuster. Don't understand why it's getting so much ire from the Star Trek faithful. If they woulda made this movie exactly how Trekkies want it to be, they would be the only ones who would watch it or like it. Star Trek needed a makeover and a fresh take on a tired franchise. They got it, and I'm thrilled. Terrific cast, interesting story, great action, just enough of a homage to the past = the perfect summer movie. Expand

The casting is spot on, and while "Kirk" may seem a bit like a frat boy, my guess is that that's exactly what he would have been as a young man! The movie has a great sense of humor, and for that alone I'm appreciative! Far too much sci-fi is overly serious and self-important. But the beauty of this is that the humor fits the narrative and, unlike almost all films today, doesn't cater to our baser instincts. Stark Trek is not an "important" film in the sense that it deals with deep themes, but it is "important" in the sense that it proves Hollywood can make an action film that isn't just a meaningless "effects fest." Michael Bay, are you listening? Expand

While, I may be disappointed on how this Universe has be rewritten so to speak, it's something I can overlook to inject more life in the series. The one really glaring problem I have( Pun intended) is the use of the good awful Lens Flare being used every 5 freaking seconds.. I though the hack director Michael Bay was a master. Abrams just takes it to and all new painful level that got really annoying rather quick. Other than that is was a solid flick with a strong cast, and effects. Expand

If star trek had never existed before this (i know, Trekkies: GASP!), it would've been an even better movie! the Pros: Great effects, acting, scenery, and direction. The whole feel of the movie blew me away so much. Some parts of the writing were mediocre, but when they said their catchphrases, it was less an "eh, they went there? can you say, CLICHE?" moment and more a throwback " AHA! I remember when they said that in the show!" moment. The Cons: the plot was a little strange and hole-y (no pun intended... or not). The make-out scenes where occasionally unnecessary, and the camera was shaky at times. But don't let the Hardcore Trekkies that still probably live in basements say that this film should be avoided. WATCH THIS FILM! If you do so without bias, i believe it'll be a fun film, even if your like me and don't like Sci-Fi films too much. Expand

Sure the Russian actor felt forced and the character development wasn't all there for the crew, but at 2 HRs running time there wasn't enough time to address it all for the Trekkers while still retaining the attention of the mainstream audience. Plenty of time to further delve into the relationships in the next film now that the hard part is out of the way [i.e. Setting the foundation and recapturing the audiences' interest in Star Trek]. P.S. Nimoy's cameo was great. Expand

But, I think it has potential to be great, come a sequel....so i'll bump it up. Star Trek proved to be an often fun, if not predictable and boring, Origin story to a take on Star Trek. The Effects were amazing, as well as the sound. The characters were all there, nostalgic as they are (for better or worse), and they are charming. The plot... was a tad "been there, done that." It didn't break away from the classic Hollywood 'Rise of the Hero' story that the orginial "Star Wars" attained decades ago. I found myself slightly bored during the last 30 minutes of the film because nothing held me on the edge of my seat. Very by the numbers. Should Star Trek be tarnished for giving the audience what they want?... Yes and a bit no. Abrams had the hard task of giving a fantastic original space opera, but cator to the nostalgia of previous fans. This made the film fall into the category of "safe." Not meant to step across boundaries to new comers and loyal fans... Horrible? No... Revolutionary? Not even close. Expand

Manic movie with plot execution that borders on cornball ludicrousness to brash derring-do, pulsating in a manner never seen before in the beloved franchise's previous instalments. Be sure to set your phasers on suspended disbelief over this one. Special effects are top-rate, and so is the chemistry between all the lead actors, which by the way is one of the assets of the film. Star Trek sows the seed of brotherhood and camaraderie between Kirk and Spock, a human and an alien; a unique friendship that plays a very integral part in Gene Roddenberry's universe. Because of this, and other small factors such as Spock's resolve to be himself despite what other people think, I therefore cannot say that Gene's vision of Star Trek has totally faded away. If the film can live Gene's philosophies rather than ponder on it, then so much the better. Expand

From a person who knows a fair amount of Star Trek storyline, there was a good amount of references. The movie wasn't filled with references, but just enough to make you chuckle. The younger alternate shipmates were done in a way that flatters the older counterparts, but still hold personality differences to be acceptable as an alternate reality. Now that I've mentioned it, this movie involves time travel and the alternate reality that is caused by it. Do not expect this to be a historically correct movie in regards to the known storyline. Now for gripes, of which I only have minor. The camera angles were amazingly showy. Always tilted, shaky, and downright annoying. The camera always caught some glare of light from somewhere, or they added it in editing for some reason. And though they correctly captured space battles in some scenes, I wish they'd done more with it. What I mean is the fact that there is no sound in space. In some scenes, they captured that point, but quickly changed back to normal. I truly wish they could have kept with that for a little longer. Overall, worth the money. Expand
