In a world saturated with the mind-numbing sitcoms of that era (Beverly Hillbillies, Green Acres, etc), Star Trek was an (admittedly flawed) breath of reason, adventure, and really cool science. I lived it, breathed it, worshiped it. Each iteration of Gene Roddenberry's vision has added to the mythology of Star Trek and the genre of science fiction in general. That being said, this movie ROCKS!!! It is what I wanted the Star Trek of the 1960s to be, but limited by the FX of the era, formulaic scripts, and a network that didn't fully support it, wasn't. This J.J. Abrams version, however, gets it. It has great FX, humor, adventure, character development, and plenty of homage to the original series. I loved it and am really, really glad that I remained unspoiled. BTW, the whole red ball thing is a fun in-joke re: Mr. Abrams and Alias. Expand

I was never as enthusiastic about the new Star Trek, although i went to see one of them at the cinema. I'm not a trekkie but i have to tell everyone how good the new film is. I was concerned that the new actors portraying he younger versions of Captain Kirk, Spock and the rest of the crew wouldn't match up. Bones in particular is spot on, the casting of this film have really done excelllently. The film itself is a blast from strart to finish. usually in most films there are slow points, this film doesn't let up. The visuals are stunning, at times reminiscent of Star Wars-A new hope. The film ends with the new crew fully established and ready for the next mission. I have to say, maybe for nostalgia value that this is one of the best films i've seen in 25 years going to see flicks. If you're not familiar with the old Tv series then i have no doubt that this will still be a great film to watch. Live long and prosper. Expand

Everyone was perfect, their accents, looks, everything. I understand why JJ had to do a time travel / alternate reality plot to reimagine these characters. I have to say that came off better then what I thought the movie was going to be. With the Nero catalyst he was able to redevelop these characters into something a little differant, they are still the same people with similar lifes, but with Nero they can be something else as well, which allows JJ to make a sequel or two without just remaking old Star Trek episodes. Although this marks the 3rd Star Trek movie involving time travel it shows something different. I really enjoyed it. Expand

I enjoyed this movie immensely and I plan on seeing it again. They could have really messed this movie up, with all the expectations of what it represents and it does not happen. I enjoy the idea of a time/alternate reality scenario, the idea that there is a chance with bright future in a bright world [light], and the fact that someone understands that there is no sound in space. But what truly what brought this movie together was the cast. They knew how to play off each other [an aspect my mother said was reminiscent of the TV series] and they knew how to be subtle to convey their emotions. They were real people. Expand

Consequently I had massive reservations about Lucas' trilogy prequels and JJ Abrams seems to have done the same here with ST. Taken a 'universe' with its own unique history, characters and 'feel' and tinker with it to update it to fit in with what they think modern viewers like. It DOESN'T WORK!! Product placement, contemporary music (why would a young Kirk kisten to Beatie Boys? oh yeah, h's supposd to be a rebel, thankyou JJ for pointing that out) a bar-room brawl, pathetic coincidences trying to explain character motivations/origins. Cringe inducing boy Spock fighting with other Vulcans, appauling monster chase scene on a clichéd ice-world, no real explanation of Spock and Uhura's relationship and so much more other complete crap! I enjoy a summer blockbuster, i really do, but they have to have at least some substance to get above a 5 or 6 out of 10 surely!!? 5 for the visual and audio effects but beacause are both from the same people who did Star Wars (ILM and Ben Burtt) it seems a bit too Star Wars prequel-ish. Anybody calling it 'implausible' must be in the non-Trek crowd, as they have never witnessed "Spock's Brain" or "We've come to find our whale-friends by destroying all in our path" ST IV or Transwarp Paris and his lizard girlfriend or ... well, you get the picture. The story is *no spoilers* Capt Kirk saves the galaxy. But it such a fun time following along that you can forget you have ever seen it before. In fact this story fills in the gaps of the series prehistory with real style and flair The casting is spot on, the action is interesting and plentiful. Ton's of callbacks to the original series that were not distracting, especially in the audio cues. This was clearly a design choice to pay homage without being caged. The multiculturalism of the Federation is evidenced by the amount of aliens which actually look, well, alien. No long passages of technobabble to justify something I already suspended belief about. I was worried about my favorite ship however the new Enterprise is much tougher and cooler than I would have expected. The new curves work really well. If for no other reason this one would make it my favorite Star Trek to date, battles are really battles! You get the establishing shot for scale and then it's close ups and great camera angles. The Wrath of Khan was more of a naval battle with broadsides and this felt much more three-dimensional and frenetic like modern combat. I will recommend this film to anyone in search of a great summer movie. Expand

It might not please everyone, but given what it's up against: * Multiple franchise series with endless lore * Going back to the epic characters that started it all * Making a jump to new cast members It took the Sci-Fi of Trek, used it against itself to enable it to re-write the entire history of Trek at the point starting with J.T.Kirk's life without having to try and claim it's somehow the same story, just earlier. Great visuals. Excellent acting. Not enough character development for a lot of the cast (but what do you want for a 2 hour film instead of several seasons on TV?), but a great explanation between how this Trek is the same.. yet different than other Treks. It simply works. Expand

Granted, there were a few 'wtf?' moments - such as three men in flight suits free-falling from the edge of space, and the inexplicable 'red matter' that can destroy everything at the drop of a pin - but I don't care. The special effects were amazing, the plot was great and the characters were all integral to the story. By far the best part, however, was seeing all the classic 1970s models and styles updated perfectly to modern standards! This film wouldn't have looked out of place in 1975 (bar the CGI, obviously) and nor will it look out of place in 2275. Expand

It manages to update a 40 year old franchise that is central to American culture and the international sci-fi genre while remaining thoroughly contemporary in its sensitivities. Zachary Quinto's younger (and therefore more human) Spock is a lot less alien yet still brings an otherworldly flavor to the plot. The exploration of the relationship between Kirk and McCoy is an aspect that is almost completely new to Star Trek productions (it was a given before). Leonard Nimoy provides much needed gravitas and the new Scotty brings a fresh take to a character not easy to re imagine. I'm a big fan of sci-fi in general and Star Trek in particular. I have seen all the movies and the episodes of all the series at least twice. However, none of the films ever came close to being considered among my favorite movies. (And no, I don't speak Klingon or go to conventions.) This movie is something else entirely. I went to a pre-screening with government and industry execs and the press where I did not expect to find the best reception for the film and was surprised to hear everyone say they liked it (even people who normally wouldn't be caught dead watching sci-fi). To answer those that state that you need to have ADHD to enjoy it well you need to get with the times, that is the modern film aesthetic and must be appreciated just as abstract art is appreciated even though it doesn't have the detail of the great masters. Anyway this is much more than a popcorn flick, it is a piece of Americana resurrected. In short, go see it. Expand

It may be in large part due to my disappointment regarding the X-men movie but I thought the cast nailed their parts. Quinto hit all the little Spock-ish looks with just the right timing and the right application of his eyebrows. Pine was a bit obvious in his constantly checking out every woman who passed him by but that is exactly what Kirk would do seemingly. The plot was the only aspect of the film I thought needed real help. It lacked a certain oomph provided by a sci-fi-esque conceptual nightmare like a giant single celled creature about to eat the ship. In any case the film was fun, in the spirit of the original at the very least and filled with what I thought were some fine performances. Expand

How I do not understand the poor reviews of this film. This movie was fun and action-packed. For those who believe that the Star Trek universe has been destroyed by this movie do not understand how intellectually vapid the old concepts were. How many permutations of the same morality can a person watch? Don't get me wrong, I love STNG and DS9, but after those two shows successfully fleshed out the universe, the other shows didn't make the grade. I, for one, am grateful that JJ decided to give the timeline a 'tabula rasa' and allow the movies in the future to explore new territory. to respond to those who are complaining about gaps in the plot, you have obviously never watched JJ's TV shows. His style is to intentionally leave gaps in the plot and storyline to get you to engage your brain and postulate what happened of import during that glaring gap. Is it really that much of a stretch to imagine that he would use the same techniques in his movie? I would have given this movie a 10 except for 2 reasons - The space/sky diving. Abrams obviously forgot about the scientific concept called the 'coefficient of friction'. Those guys would have burnt up on re-entry. Second, 'Red Matter'? This has no basis in science or fiction...what is that stuff and why...never mind. I was particularly impressed by the portrayal of Spock - they did their best to incorporate his human genetic propensities much better in this iteration. It could have been done a little more tastefully, but Abrams has a certain style and is prone to cinematic and dramatic hyperbole. As a former geek in high school, I identified with the young Spock. I don't know a single geek that didn't fantasize about getting even. All of the former geeks that I know found that scene to be particularly satisfying. Expand

The updated and more action-packed Trek worked for me. Be sure to watch this either in a theater or on a large TV screen with good sound and it will deliver epic popcorn perfection. The powerful opening battle scenes drew me in immediately and emotionally, and later in the movie there's enough humor to provide levity, namely Dr. McCoy's arsenal of injections. Most importantly for me, the main characters were properly cast (Spock, twice!) and well-developed, the script tight (didn't matter to me about the parallel universe), and the effects solid (unlike most movies where effects are everything and characters one-dimensional). Abrams and co. brought the swagger back and injected a faster pace to Trek (which might be slightly over the top for some viewers, esp. with some of the cliffhangers). Giacchino's riveting, brassy soundtrack, stirred with occasional harp glissandos, works to add dramatic flair. It's my favorite orchestral soundtrack in years. The editing is tight throughout, with one exception--I do wish the police scene with young Kirk had been cut and torched. Besides that, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Let the epic popcorn sc-fi movie do what it's supposed to--entertain, stimulate, and provide catharsis. Expand
