The prologue is rousing stuff, but it's not until we hear the Beastie Boys blaring over the soundtrack that this shrewd reboot irreparably distances itself from the campy original, as Kirk(Chris Pine), a rebel without a cause, sends his vehicle careening over a cliff(perhaps, a subtle nod to the 1955 film directed by Nicholas Ray). Painting Kirk as a lost child with suicidal tendencies repositions William Shatner's lecherous take on the captain as being symptomatic of overcompensation. Finally, Kirk becomes relatable to the masses, and breaks the filmic text wide open. Enlistment with the Star Fleet makes all the sense in the world; he has nowhere else to go. In the original series, the viewer never gets a sense that the Enterprise crew members had lives outside of the ship. Never has an origin story been this crucial, or game for self-invention. The film's masterstroke, no doubt, is its reimagining of Kirk and Spock(Zachary Quinto) as rivals. You always took their friendship for granted. The way Leonard Nimoy played the half-breed alien, Spock was always so cool and collected, like he was on a perpetual Quaalude high. The fiery temper that the Vulcan displays here is a revelation. So many unknown scenarios, death-causing scenarios, could have arisen once Spock jettisons Kirk off the ship. His dislike for the future captain nearly makes a murderer out of him. This Spock is no celibate. This Spock kicks ass. As does the film. For a refreshing change, it presents military service in a positive light, completely free of the nihilism found in Paul Verhoeven's "Starship Troopers". Nero(Eric Bana) is given a choice; the violence that comes down on the Romulans isn't senseless. Expand

Anyone remember Kirk and crew going back in time to get some WHALES? Not saying I didn't enjoy it, but the time travel was not explained well, and why the crap was the monolith looking for whales by destroying the atmosphere? Comparatively, this movie made time travel look possible and probable. I really enjoyed it. It was fun, and laid a firm ground for the next movie. This was a reboot; understand it on those terms, and I think you will appreciate it more. It does what it set out to do, and presented some great new actors. Expand

Many of the carping A bold, daring and fresh reboot that grabs hold of you from the first minutes into the film -- and I saw it dubbed in Italian. Like many, I'm a lifelong Trek fan and I was dubious at the outset of this project. Many of the carping comments here remind me of the criticism of the prior major reboot, The Next Generation. All isn't how I would've done it but it's not my vision. It's J.J. Abrams' vision and he's done a terrific job, particularly in casting. The cast is just about pitch-perfect and I had no trouble accepting them in their roles. Hard-core fans, like me, will have some pangs over some of the developments, especially surrounding Spock. Zachary Quinto merits special mention for an uncanny performance that never once veers into imitation. I particularly love how Abrams took hints from ST:TOS about the characters and explored them. Like others before me, I would remind some of the fan critics of a few cogent points: This is an *alternate* reality and some events from ST:TOS have changed. Vulcans -- and Romulans -- have 250 year life expectancies. We are not told at what point Spock Prime (and Nero) exited the main ST timeline but it clearly was much later than the ST:TNG period and tech undoutedly had advanced. Wesley Crusher was a prodigy and it was implied in TOS that Chekhov was also. TOS episode "Mirror, Mirror" was one of the best. So relax, don't let the best be the enemy of the good, and enjoy a great new Trek adventure. The Trek universe is more than big enough to hold an alternate storyline or two. Expand

The characters were done perfectly, and the modern-redoing of the look worked, because it blended modern and nostalgic styles successfully. It was far more action-packed than Star Trek ever is, and it did not venture into any true sci-fi territory. But to those who fault the film for that, I'd like to remind you that only the best Star Trek episodes were real Sci-Fi. If you didn't like the movie because it wasn't sci-fi enough, then there's a whole lot of Star Trek that you must have hated. Either that, or you have a very strong aversion to fun. Expand

I was completely absorbed from the hyperactive opening to the breathless ending! I've never watched the series or any of the films, and the characterisation of Kirk and the incineration of Planet Vulcan may have bothered me more if I had, but as a purely visual and sensual experience, this was simply AMAZING!!! Who cares about a wafer-thin plot if the direction is as relentlessly breathtaking as this! Yes, it didn't exactly test the grey matter, but the characters were brimming with attitude and full of personality- a rare thing with an action film (e.g. the Bourne series). I get the Having never been a big fan of Star Trek, save for my mild interest in Star Trek The Next Generation and Star Trek Deep Space Nine, I've always been partial to Star Wars for my "Sci-Fi" fix but this "Trek" is different. I get the feeling this film will lure in a new generation of fans to the Star Trek franchise, mainly because its a fresh, exciting entry to the series that new and old fans can appreciate. The story centers around two characters primarily...Kirk (Chris Pine) and Spock (Zachary Quinto)...we see both characters as "up and comers" with a bit of their origins being shown as we know these two "legends" of the series are meant for great things. The story centers around Nero (Eric Bana), playing a great (though under-used) villain, as a Romulan h*ll-bent on getting revenge against Starfleet and Spock for whom he feels is responsible for the death of his people...throw in some "time travel" and you have a rather complex tale of revenge thats still easy to follow for the average film-goer. The cast is young and refreshing and most of them truly embrace their characters (Karl Urban IS "Bones" McCoy) with an energy that shows everyone is really having a great time portraying their characters. The action scenes are big, loud, and pleasing to the senses with some impressive FX and amazing sound (or lack there-of during the "in space" sequences...a nice touch). Overall...I am VERY pleased with this film...its entertaining through-out with an amazing cast, great action, and its done in a way that will surely make fans of even the most hardcore of Trek "haters". I very much look forward to the next film of what will hopefully be a new series of flicks. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Expand

In a world saturated with the mind-numbing sitcoms of that era (Beverly Hillbillies, Green Acres, etc), Star Trek was an (admittedly flawed) breath of reason, adventure, and really cool science. I lived it, breathed it, worshiped it. Each iteration of Gene Roddenberry's vision has added to the mythology of Star Trek and the genre of science fiction in general. That being said, this movie ROCKS!!! It is what I wanted the Star Trek of the 1960s to be, but limited by the FX of the era, formulaic scripts, and a network that didn't fully support it, wasn't. This J.J. Abrams version, however, gets it. It has great FX, humor, adventure, character development, and plenty of homage to the original series. I loved it and am really, really glad that I remained unspoiled. BTW, the whole red ball thing is a fun in-joke re: Mr. Abrams and Alias. Expand

I have to say that came off better then what I thought the movie was going to be. With the Nero catalyst he was able to redevelop these characters into something a little differant, they are still the same people with similar lifes, but with Nero they can be something else as well, which allows JJ to make a sequel or two without just remaking old Star Trek episodes. The story is *no spoilers* Capt Kirk saves the galaxy. But it such a fun time following along that you can forget you have ever seen it before. In fact this story fills in the gaps of the series prehistory with real style and flair The casting is spot on, the action is interesting and plentiful. Ton's of callbacks to the original series that were not distracting, especially in the audio cues. This was clearly a design choice to pay homage without being caged. The multiculturalism of the Federation is evidenced by the amount of aliens which actually look, well, alien. No long passages of technobabble to justify something I already suspended belief about. I was worried about my favorite ship however the new Enterprise is much tougher and cooler than I would have expected. The new curves work really well. If for no other reason this one would make it my favorite Star Trek to date, battles are really battles! You get the establishing shot for scale and then it's close ups and great camera angles. The Wrath of Khan was more of a naval battle with broadsides and this felt much more three-dimensional and frenetic like modern combat. I will recommend this film to anyone in search of a great summer movie. Expand

I usually only review films that are so bad I have no choice but to go online and rant about their crappiness. Star Trek, however, delivered the goods :) This is the Star Trek movie that the franchise sorely needed and blows all the others away with the exception of Kahn. The casting is spot on for pretty much every major character. Pegg, I was dubious of at first, but he actually did a great job. Every actor pulled off their respective characters superbly, in particular, Pine as Kirk as I believe he had the hardest task of reviving Kirk while not "doing a Shatner". Spock, McCoy, Uhura, Scotty etc. all put in excellent performances. Oh, Bana's very good too as Nero. The visual effects are beautiful and the look of the movie manages to remain true to the old series as does the script but in a fresh, modern way. Not everyone will get all of the Trek references throughout the film (which by the way, somehow manage to avoid being cheesy at all and are often very funny). That being said, the film is full of humour that everyone will appreciate anyway as the dialogue is snappy and very funny at times. The story is compelling and manages to introduce the characters and establish their roles and relationships with each other in a convincing and meaningful way and they all get their moment in the sun. Action-wise you've got fisticuffs, space battles, shootouts, explosions and plenty more so there's no excuse for people sending up Z's during the flick ;) Okay so to sum up; spot on casting, good story, great performances, lots of action, sharp dialogue and plenty of laughs. What are you waiting for? See it. PS: I just saw that two users gave this a really low score. I Expand

Granted, there were a few 'wtf?' moments - such as three men in flight suits free-falling from the edge of space, and the inexplicable 'red matter' that can destroy everything at the drop of a pin - but I don't care. The special effects were amazing, the plot was great and the characters were all integral to the story. By far the best part, however, was seeing all the classic 1970s models and styles updated perfectly to modern standards! It manages to update a 40 year old franchise that is central to American culture and the international sci-fi genre while remaining thoroughly contemporary in its sensitivities. Zachary Quinto's younger (and therefore more human) Spock is a lot less alien yet still brings an otherworldly flavor to the plot. The exploration of the relationship between Kirk and McCoy is an aspect that is almost completely new to Star Trek productions (it was a given before). Leonard Nimoy provides much needed gravitas and the new Scotty brings a fresh take to a character not easy to re imagine. I'm a big fan of sci-fi in general and Star Trek in particular. I have seen all the movies and the episodes of all the series at least twice. However, none of the films ever came close to being considered among my favorite movies. (And no, I don't speak Klingon or go to conventions.) This movie is something else entirely. I went to a pre-screening with government and industry execs and the press where I did not expect to find the best reception for the film and was surprised to hear everyone say they liked it (even people who normally wouldn't be caught dead watching sci-fi). To answer those that state that you need to have ADHD to enjoy it well you need to get with the times, that is the modern film aesthetic and must be appreciated just as abstract art is appreciated even though it doesn't have the detail of the great masters. Anyway this is much more than a popcorn flick, it is a piece of Americana resurrected. In short, go see it. Expand

How I do not understand the poor reviews of this film. This movie was fun and action-packed. For those who believe that the Star Trek universe has been destroyed by this movie do not understand how intellectually vapid the old concepts were. How many permutations of the same morality can a person watch? Don't get me wrong, I love STNG and DS9, but after those two shows successfully fleshed out the universe, the other shows didn't make the grade. I, for one, am grateful that JJ decided to give the timeline a 'tabula rasa' and allow the movies in the future to explore new territory. to respond to those who are complaining about gaps in the plot, you have obviously never watched JJ's TV shows. His style is to intentionally leave gaps in the plot and storyline to get you to engage your brain and postulate what happened of import during that glaring gap. Is it really that much of a stretch to imagine that he would use the same techniques in his movie? I would have given this movie a 10 except for 2 reasons - The space/sky diving. Abrams obviously forgot about the scientific concept called the 'coefficient of friction'. Those guys would have burnt up on re-entry. Second, 'Red Matter'? This has no basis in science or fiction...what is that stuff and why...never mind. I was particularly impressed by the portrayal of Spock - they did their best to incorporate his human genetic propensities much better in this iteration. It could have been done a little more tastefully, but Abrams has a certain style and is prone to cinematic and dramatic hyperbole. As a former geek in high school, I identified with the young Spock. I don't know a single geek that didn't fantasize about getting even. All of the former geeks that I know found that scene to be particularly satisfying. Expand

The performances were excellent, and the action was nicely paced without sacrificing opportunities for meaningful character development. Let's face it, though: Star Trek was "dead in the water", to use an old nautical term, because the story was old and lacking bold ideas. The whole feel of the movie blew me away so much. Some parts of the writing were mediocre, but when they said their catchphrases, it was less an "eh, they went there? can you say, CLICHE?" moment and more a throwback " AHA! I remember when they said that in the show!" moment. The Cons: the plot was a little strange and hole-y (no pun intended... or not). The make-out scenes where occasionally unnecessary, and the camera was shaky at times. But don't let the Hardcore Trekkies that still probably live in basements say that this film should be avoided. Manic movie with plot execution that borders on cornball ludicrousness to brash derring-do, pulsating in a manner never seen before in the beloved franchise's previous instalments. Be sure to set your phasers on suspended disbelief over this one. Special effects are top-rate, and so is the chemistry between all the lead actors, which by the way is one of the assets of the film. Star Trek sows the seed of brotherhood and camaraderie between Kirk and Spock, a human and an alien; a unique friendship that plays a very integral part in Gene Roddenberry's universe. Because of this, and other small factors such as Spock's resolve to be himself despite what other people think, I therefore cannot say that Gene's vision of Star Trek has totally faded away. If the film can live Gene's philosophies rather than ponder on it, then so much the better. Expand
