Combines old and new elements in the genre and is entertaining from beginning to end. There is/was a potentially deep story that could have elevated the film to really great heights, but as others have mentioned the plot didn't execute it all that well, speaking namely of the connection between the two main characters. Still, absolutely worth a watch. Expand

If you watched the excellent "Life" sci-fi horror thriller, this is its spiritual sequel. A cosmonaut returns with an alien life form in this slow-burn Russian export.

Excellent movie. This is much more than an Alien movie. Keeps you glued with all the suspense and drama.

Therefore, when you watch it, there is a sense of misunderstanding. It seems that the artists are familiar, and the situation of the USSR is not poorly transmitted in its own way. But according to the script, by building a director, this is a completely alien movie aimed at another audience. I don't see anything wrong with it, Hollywood loves it. But I want to see something unique, and not a copy of the American look at the Sci-Fi movie about aliens. If I want to see this, I'll watch a famous Ridley Scott movie. Expand

The fact that the movie does not rate higher is because half way down the line, the plot starts introducing holes that simply do not make sense to the audience - for example the fact that an alien is able to roam freely in a high security bunker. Things escalate pretty fast from there... Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Set in soviet era Russia this film brilliantly unravels as a psychological suspense drama with sci-fi overtones. It is at heart a mystery story deconstructed against the socialist structure and forces at play during Russia in the 80s and this sets a tone that is unique to Russian film identity. It is cleverly told with nuance not found in most American films. The dialogue driven story slowly builds on the suspense that it sets up from the start and climaxes to a satisfying conclusion. The ending seems to be happy but hints at something else going on. Spoiler alert*** Why does the son refer to himself as a girl and uses Tatyana’s name before meeting her for the first time? Did the creature survive and use Tatyana as a host to connect with Konstantin’s son .. if so then the connection with his son was established in some way while it was connected to Konstantin. Could this be a metaphor of breaking away from the socialist structure that held it captive to establish a hive mind in which it will now be able enslave humanity itself. Expand

this has to be one of the best and most underrated sci-fi / horror movies of the 2000's.

the atmosphere, creature design, direction, cinematography, visual effects and don't get me started on the score.

international films need to be more appreciated because this was better than most domestic films i've seen, it's almost like LIFE that came out a few years ago with Ryan Reynolds but 10 times better.

if anyone hasn't seen this yet, i definitely recommend that you watch it, because this film was just absolutely amazing.

Great writing, acting and cinematography in an unexpectedly stylish, low budget, sci fi thriller. It was refreshing to see a Russian perspective on a familiar theme.
