This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. One of M. Knight's finest. James McAvoy is brilliant. It's a slow burn thriller and culminates in a sudden but well-desereved ending. Strong themes, and disturbing references of abuse. ...Anya Taylor-Joy's character's "strength through suffering" which allows her to survive is a compelling idea the film ends on. Expand

Night Shyamalan's latest film, Split, marks his return to smaller budget, tighter stories after a period of less successful films. The movie centers around a mysterious and unpredictable antagonist with 23 personalities, held captive in a bunker with a group of young girls. The film effectively creates a sense of danger and claustrophobia by alternating between the bunker and the offices of the girls' therapist. James McAvoy gives a standout performance as the captor, Kevin, showcasing his ability to convey different states of mind. The plot is a typical thriller, with moments of good thought and compelling scenes. However, the final act falls short, shifting towards a superhero theme and leaving some plot points unresolved. Overall, Split is a return to form for Shyamalan and sets up potential for more in this saga, with McAvoy's performance being a highlight.
________________

Curti demais o ponto alto do filme é a sequência do monstro todo escroto com veia saltando escalando parede top demais divertido. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First off, this film has a pretty unoriginal main plot, although I did find the manipulation aspect somewhat interesting. It had the feel of a tacky b-movie about it, though I can't deny that James McAvoy gave a decent performance as the villain with disassociative personality disorder. It is tense, though I felt perhaps not quite as tense as it maybe could have been somehow - it felt a little over the top for my taste and so while I was curious to see how events would pan out and I did feel concerned for the trapped women, I didn't find myself feeling as 'at the edge of my seat' as I have while watching other films. I felt frustrated that the female characters, while they did show some mild initiative, mostly they appeared on screen as scared, nervous and clearly vulnerable people, which is, of course, understandable due to the circumstances they find themselves in but the fact they were seemingly so helpless just felt a little too tacky to me - in somewhat poor taste, shall I say. However, I should perhaps point out that there is another, certainly a professional, female character who knows of the villains various identities, which was good to see.

Overall its not really an awful film as such but it certainly seems to me to be treading old/worn ground, you could say. If it wasn't for McAvoy's performance, I wouldn't say its worth seeing at all, pretty much but his performance did make it that bit more watchable and intriguing. Also, I imagine it would have seemed more atmospheric and perhaps a bit more sinister if viewed at a cinema, rather than watching it on a TV like I did, through Netflix. Also, fans of the director (M Night Shymalan) will likely appreciate a reference or two present in the final scene but I won't elaborate so as not to provide any spoilers, of course.

This movie is great comeback for M. Night Shyamalan in superhero and suspense genre. This movie showed us different kind of superhero l suspense drama.

After the introduction of main character, you can tell that something isn't right but the suspense keeps on building and you can't tell what is happening until it is revealed. The most surprising thing about this film is how naturally suspense, drama and horror are blended together. Nothing really felt forced or unnatural in acting, pace, or action.

The only thing which I didn't like in this movie was that the climax was not that much appealing. Also movie looked little bit streched. It could have been shortened by around 10-15 minutes easily. Overall, this movie should be given a try. This may prove good experience for you.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If I had something to say about the move that was good? It has an original ideal and good cinematography. And the pacing is... good until it is not. And Betty Buckley is very good in this movie, McAvoy I feel does his best with what he is given.

The bad? Oh...
The Scripts just sucks. The dialog is stilted the Pacing is not so much bad as the story just has bad whiplash, and really just needs to pick a lane.

The movie has a bad case of stupids. Every character in the movie just acts like an idiot all the time, no one acts rationally at any given point in the story.

The Ugly....
James McAvoy's "Character/s" Are garbage. I love McAvoy in almost everything he does and I can tell he is really trying with what he has been handed. But the character comes across as someone playing characters... Yes, I know that McAvoy is playing characters, but that characters themselves just seem like someone playing characters.

And this is before we even get to just how edgy/cringe parts of the whole thing are. And what a terrible portrayal of a mentally ill person to boot.

In all, this is a pretty garbage movie, that non-deep people think is deep.

The most obvious praise you can give this movie is for McAvoy’s performance, and... yeah. He’s amazing. He delivers a performance that’s expressive and entertaining enough to appeal to casual viewers, but also has enough nuance and depth to be a legitimate contender for an Academy Award (much like Heath Ledger’s performance as the Joker). But a string of terrible movies like The Last Airbender derailed those thoughts. Now, it feels like he has finally listened to the fans who said that they want to see him do his old stuff, which in this case is thrillers that are suspenseful. This film engages you from the start and you are sucked in to the plot and story. McAvoy shines in this movie and brings it to a whole new level with his performance, he really brings these different personalities to life. All of these personalities feel like a totally different character each time you see them and that is very difficult for an actor to do. The character of Kevin is played close to perfection by McAvoy, please put this man in the Oscar conversation for 2017!

Split is truly M. Knight Shyamalan returning to form and delivered on a very suspenseful movie that has you on the edge of your seat. This movie has a great performance by James McAvoy who steals the show in one of his best performances. I will say that if you aren’t really into thrillers or certain aspects of Shyamalan films you won’t really be a fan of this movie. But, if you were a fan of his early work you will be pleasantly surprised and excited to see him returning to what he does best.

The story amounts simply to mind over matter, which would make this Shyamalanic world full of people with powers, not just a few. Wards are full of people with delusions of power based fantasies, and in this Shattered/Split world they would be correct. I found the psychologist's logic to be usual Hollywood technobabble and her pretense of helping was shattered when she refuted the possibility that a particular personality could exist. There are a few plot holes as well, but they were just a convience to keep the story moving, and are easily overlooked. Some called this a superhero movie. It is not. Expand

Every one of his works is reminiscent of Serling minus the latter's voice in the dialogue. But Shyamalan, despite influences still has his very own specific identity and style. That said, if Serling's work was always stories told well but sometimes stories not necessarily worth telling, the same holds true with Shyamalan. This is a fascinating and taut film that ultimately left me unfulfilled and disappointed. I'm still glad I watched it but want a bit of a rewrite. It should be said that all of the performances were stellar, McAvoy's being chief among them. I know this is the sort of role that many actors salivate over and it could have been done so absolutely over the top as to ruin the experience. James did not do that. He showed subtlety and nuance but also menace when need be. Pretty captivating performance. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. M. Night Shyamalan should have stayed, "retired."

This film is simply disturbing, especially the scenes depicting two of the girls being eaten by the, "beast."

Apparently, it is not okay for Producer/Directors to make edgy jokes (James Gunn) but it is fine for people to make movies about terrified people being eaten by cannibals with D.I.D.

Hollywood/society is sick.

I don't know why people want movies like this.

Second time watching was just as scary as the first time. It's scary with a little bit of 'nasty' scenes, but for people like me, that can't stand truly disturbing typically nasty horror movies, 'Split' was decent In this case .

The movie concerns Multiple Personality Disorder. The split personality is quite a rare , affects small portion of the population and it's considered that the main reason for it's development is due to increasingly common childhood abuse (I love the short, but sufficient scene for the cause of the protagonist current mental state, perfectly directed). By the way, if you are interested, there are super interesting personal made videos in YouTube by people in this condition. The real life inspiration for 'Split' is a person, called Billy Milligan. A movie worthy watching.

Split

There are some indigestible scenes which allows you to cringe on your seat and if not those scenes only the concept will do enough for it is on a whole new level of dark genre. Split cannot be considered as a popcorn entertainer for it offers more than that and antes up a bit than it was expected and surprises the audience. M. Night Shyamalan even though keeps it dark and brutal throughout its course, ends it on a lighter and brighter tone and also a great cliffhanger for the fans who have been following him over the years. James McAvoy gets deep into the character and survives majestically offering and projecting some of his career's best work. Split even though tackles with complex concept, is an actors show and completely relies upon stellar performances by the actors in it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. M. Night Shyamalan's Split is an amazing psychological thriller film. And what makes it even better is the fact that it is actually a sequel to the film Unbreakable. James McAvoy was flawless as he plays many dual performances in this film. Anya-Taylor Joy's character was also great in this film. The story was great, the tone was great, and the pacing was perfect. In the end, this is a great film and even better sequel. Expand

Good acting from Mcavoy, and atmosphere can be thrilling at beginning.
Other than that story is abysmal , other characters (including girls, psychiatrist, total lack of rescuers and zoo workers who are like imbeciles btw, and even most of personas inside McAvoy characters head) behave like morons, have unrealistical solutions and that makes them really unsympathetic. Whole movie is some kind of "super" villain origin story but with really bad point and with elements of snuff/exploitation movie, and making last survivor spared because she was molested as a child and continues to be as teenager is sickening.
This movie is total waste of time.
Mr Shamalayan should find another day job.

The 24th's about to explode!

The much needed break for the director Shyamalan. It has been over a decade since the last time he was lauded like this for his work. On the paper, it was a simple split personality disaster theme, but cinematically clicked so well. Firstly the performance of James McAvoy made this film a very success. I have seen his lots of films, but if I had to choose only one of his great, that's would be easily this one. A straightforward story, no complication to understand, or needed to explain everything it revolves. Then suddenly the final act turned into a different mode. With a twist, all comes to end.

The three teenage girls have been kidnapped at the beginning. Following that, the victims do not know the situation, but makes a couple of bad moves, except one girl. As the film progress, many secrets revealed to us, particularly about the kidnapper. It all developed to lead in one direction where an unimaginable thing going to happen. How and what result it brings told in the following parts.

The perspective of the story was not really a thing in this. That means it does not take sides, but gives you the option to choose. And most of the viewers would root for the weird girl. It was Anya, and she's having a wonderful career in early stage. Could becomes one of the best if she contributed all her performances in the same pace and intensity. The music was equally awesome. Created the perfect atmosphere along with the visuals. I could have not asked the better one. Best thriller of the year. You will be stupid to miss it out if you love films.

Split is the latest movie from M. Night Shyamalymalmaylmalmalmya, and though it is not his worst work, it is just...okay.

Acting: James McAvoy was fantastic, delivering a memorable performance. It takes a lot to pull off multiple different characters, and he pulled it off amazingly. Otherwise the acting was just okay. The main girl was fine, but one of the two girls wasn't very good, and other almost felt like she was over-acting a bit.

Characters: I wish that either we spent more time with all 23 personalities, or there were less of them, because we only got to spend a lot of time with about 5 of them. Otherwise, there's not much development going on besides the main girl and a little bit of McAvoy's character(s). The other two girls have nothing to do besides wearing nearly nothing and freaking out.

Plot: The plot is pretty basic, but I thought the movie did a great job of building up suspense at times, mostly towards the beginning as it started wearing off towards the end. Even the few jumpscares that were spoiled by the trailers still got my heart beating. Even the initial capture of the girls got my pulse to speed up, even though I know what's going to happen.

Script: Meh. Probably should have had an actual scriptwriter write the film. But it doesn't drag the movie down completely. It's passable at the least.

Directing: I think it is better for Shyamalan to be working on lower budgets in his recent films, as he becomes a bit less ambitious and doesn't try and show off. Of course, a twist is still present though not too satisfying, but it feels like Shyamalan is trying to take a step back. All the money can go to your head, especially after his initial successes.

Overall, Split is successful at creating suspense and tension, but is otherwise not terribly memorable, and I know some people who are upset at the way they portray mental illnesses as bad and dangerous, especially DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder).

Is very hard to write a review of split.
Is hard because the film is mediocre (Not bad or good in any sense). The plot is intriguing but shifts from a psychological horror to a supernatural one in a blink of an eye.
The characters are both incredibly well developed (Kevin and Casey) and incredibly shallow (The two girls nobody gave a **** about).
What makes it good? James McAvoy was outstanding, without him the film would be a 5/6 out of ten at its best. But McAvoy delivers one of the best acting performances i've seen in the last years. Just look at him. His facial mimics, body language, everything is great. And this while managing to give each of the various personality a well defined nature.

To summarize this film:
The film is mediocre but the acting is so good is worth seeing it. (Both McAvoy and Taylor-Joy performances)

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Split is one of my favourite movies. Ever. I know Shyamalan hasn't had the best of runs over the past years, but Split begs to differ. Right from the start, James McAvoy steals the show with a performance, I think, worthy of an Academy Award. He switches effortlessly from personality to personality, which isn't easy considering one is a 9-year old boy, and another an OCD middle-aged man, and another a household-wife kinda woman. When the 24th personality is finally revealed, even you feel scared and on edge, as even his absences from the camera make you wonder where he is or what he's up to. In other words, no matter if he's on or off-screen , he's always on your mind. The other performance worth a notice is that of Anya Taylor-Joy, who conveyed her emotions of utter fear outstandingly, every facial expression saying a thousand things at once, every sentence weighted perfectly, knowing when to commit one to your memory and really feel for her. Shyamalan has wonderfully balanced the amount of horror, comedy (Hedwig, the dancing scene worth a mention- creepy but funny in its own right) and abnormality ('The Beast'- not totally unbelievable but something that makes you go 'Woah, that is COOL': and occasionally scares the sh!t out of you.). The main focus of the film is Kevin's mind, and as said: McAvoy doesn't let you forget that. Shyamalan explores his mind perfectly, letting the viewer unravel the sometimes twisted layers of Kevin's mind themselves, trusting the viewer to keep watching and follow the plot closely, immersing them in the story, which is one of the best aspects of the film- the sense of involvement with Kevin and his antics, and the rollercoaster of emotions that come hand-in-hand with them. It isn't only Kevin that we learn more about as the flim progresses, however: we learn about why Casey(Anya's character) is considerably calmer and placid than the other two girls; her exposure to physical abuse by her uncle. This in itself heightens the feelings towards Casey, and adds to the horror of the film, summed up by one of the very last scenes of the movie, when Casey is told that her uncle is waiting, and the look on her face almost says 'lock me back up with the psycho. Please.'. Again, Shyamalan trusts us to stick with the film and learn the answers to her longing to be outside and her nonchalant-esque attitude to her rather hairy situation, which when is discovered is quite harrowing.

My only con about this movie are the performances of the two other girls, Claire and Marcia (played by Haley Lu Richardson and Jessica Sula); their reactions seemed too forced, and in general the duo seemed out of place in this film.

So, basically: Watch. This. Film.

However, after considering my enjoyment of an interesting plot line for most of the movie, and VERY good acting by the majority of the characters, I was entertained overall. Yes... McAvoy WAS exceptional, and this film probably would have failed miserably were he not cast in the lead role. I also thought that Betty Buckley's psychologist role was very well acted... she did a great job with it. This is the first I've seen of Anya Taylor-Joy and she, too, did a great job with her character.

I'm not really a fan of director MNS, so my expectations were not high. The plot line was intriguing and interesting most of the movie, but fell apart at the end as it went from reasonably "intellectual" to more like Sci-Fi. Finally... for anyone that has not seen another of MNS's movies, the final scene will NOT have any payoff value at all. IF it was a setup for a sequel, I won't be going to see it.

The concept is remarkably well-executed and despite a familiar kidnapping aspect the movie really is unlike anything else out there. James McAvoy is absolutely incredible. I've always thought of him as an incredible actor, but here he goes above and beyond by giving us multiple fantastic performances all in the same film. It's not just the voices either. Each person he plays feels fully fleshed out and unique from one another. Even little facial quirks are brought to life by him.

The tale itself seems to be a parable about human cruelty. The writing is mostly fantastic except for the fact that some of the characters fall into that predictable horror movie trapping of overstepping their ability and doing things that prolong the danger of the scenario when they could have ended things by just making the smart decision. The movie's real flaw though is a disappointing lack of true fear. There's a sense of tension, but nothing that will keep you on edge. What keeps you invested is the weirdness of it all. The mystery is inviting enough to keep you watching.

M. Night Shyamalan is making his comeback. Whether or not he can keep this up following this and The Visit is to be seen. Split proves to be another reason of why we should risk it. It's not perfect, but it's a welcome dose of creativity and uniqueness. Plus it serves as a pathway into a sequel for one of Shyamalan's more celebrated movies. There's plenty of potential in the future for Shyamalan movies, but right I recommend you enjoy their present and give Split a chance.

There is also a psychiatrist who is played by the crazy old lady in The Happening, who is trying to figure out the nature of the guy’s condition… ya there is a lot going on.

I think what makes this movie stands out is the amazing performance from James McAvoy and Anya Taylor-Joy. For me, a good movie should have some characters I care about and this movie have it. McAvoy’s performance can be categorized as over the top which reminds me of Paul Giamatti in Lady in the Water. But here it works. His character feels funny at first and then gradually it started to be downright creepy. I think the best thing about his performance is that every personality feels almost realistic. The scariest one is his lady personality. You almost feel like he is actually transgender. His calm and almost unnerving attitudes to the kidnapped girls is creeping me out. There is no action and no over-the-top emotion but there is something there that makes whole tension unbearable. You never know what he is going to do next. Bottom line: James McAvoy will make you forget everything about the roles he played before. Taylor-Joy’s character is someone you are worth to root for. She had a really messed up childhood which is described throughout the film. She is the victim even before the kidnapping and you sympathize what she has been through. She is trying to escape smartly and tried to gain the trusts James McAvoy’s character. She is extremely successful in making a very understandable character and she is perfect for someone who you want to root for. Considering she is a model before acting, I think she did pretty great and I hope to see her in more roles. I love the execution of the film. The setting looks very rough and reminds me of those rooms you saw in cheap B-movies. It gives you a feeling of cluster phobia and you feel like you are being trapped in a basement and there is no stairs and doors that you can escape. It gives you sense of dread and despair. However, the big problem comes from the middle. They spent way too much time explaining how did the split personality happens, which (I won’t spoil) is really stupid, you know like all the M Night films. Most importantly all the other characters are not interesting enough, especially the other two girls kidnapped, their acting were terrible. But the third act saved the entire movie. This is one of the best nail bitter horror scene I have seen in recent year. No jump scare and no other scary stereotypes, it just pure scare. The music and the lighting emphasize the unbearable tension and you are always on your seat. In the end, this is one of the best M Night Sharmalan movie. It is a very enjoyable and tense movie but not without its flaws.

However, despite this, Split is The single worst movie I have seen in my entire life. Incredibly unbelievably bad, all on account of the story, if you can call it a story. There is almost nothing to give away in this unoriginal cliche-ridden piece of garbage because little happens that you don't see in trailers. But I'll say "Spoiler Alert" anyway. Here's the plot. By the way this director has no "twist" this time, though people call the ending a twist. It's an easter egg not a twist. It's a silly little tacked on bit of nonsense to top it all off, just in case it wasn't bad enough already - which I assure you, it was! Three girls are kidnapped by a man with 23 personalities. The two bad personalities did it, and they plan to release a 24th personality known as 'the beast' - a kind of Hulk or werewolf or Mr. Hyde if you will, to eat the girls. They succeed and the man gobbles up some of the first two girls, but when he encounters the third, he sees that she cuts herself, and understands from this that she (like he) has been abused (he developed these personalities in response to abuse) and so he lets her live. That's it, my friends. A long dull waste of your time and money. This guy has been making bad movies for decades. The Sixth Sense was his single good film and it's been manure ever since, but this is the absolute worst of them all. Expand

First Viewing: A fresh horror film with some unexpected turns. After my viewing I have to say it was a solid 8/10 with some of my expectations blown away. Now upon the first look of this movie I turned it away thinking it to be a bottom tier quick buck horror film until I noticed some positive reviews and I have to say that I was quite impressed. The movie managed to entertain while giving a unique insight into the mind of Kevin. An astonishing performance by James McAvoy who previously has never before in my eyes been that capable of an actor. It was enjoying to see him spread his wings and play a unique role that an other actor might have squandered. It it interesting to see Night's movies on the upswing with his recent string of movies tanking at every turn. It seems Night has rediscovered a bit of what has made his previous movies so great, though I won't say this movie was perfect it has some issues as do most but it was still refreshing to watch. As for the credit scene with the nod to the movie being inside the same universe as Unbreakable was a true unexpected mind blower. I can only hope this is a promise for a sequel which some fans have been desperately craving. I really home Night keeps this trend with making better movies and we don't see him fall back into the pits of Avatar and The Happening. This concludes my review and for those who are thinking of seeing this movie I would recommend watching it. Though I would advise not to think too far into it and try to remove your suspension of disbelief and you will find it much more entertaining.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Predictable yawn fest. The shrink's dialogue delivers nothing but exposition. The female protagonist(s) are poorly developed. The dialogue is totally insincere and unapologetically on the nose. McAvoy does the best he can with what he has, and as such is passable. Anya stares a lot with tears. It's not them, it's the direction. It's all the more irritating because there could have been a taut thriller in here, as conceptually it's an interesting notion. However no-one does anything of import to drive the story forward. There's a ticking time bomb, and it just counts down to the inevitable and totally predictable (spoiler alert) twist. Watch 10 Cloverfield Lane instead. Expand

Best movie ever I would have just added more extensive back story of Kevin's Childhood the abuse he endured that made personalities (like the movie Sybil)
Just like Casey Cooke with the sexual abuse in the movie

What makes it so special is that the whole story is solidly based on actual science.
And doesn't label people who suffers from this mental "disorder" as just freaks or weirdos. Or the usual cliches.
It goes way beyond that. Good performances from all actors, terrific story. What more could you ask ?
It left a deep impression on me. It's one of those movies that you remember for a long time. And makes you wonder. What is the human mind capable of ?
