This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. M. Night Shyamalan should have stayed, "retired."

This film is simply disturbing, especially the scenes depicting two of the girls being eaten by the, "beast."

Apparently, it is not okay for Producer/Directors to make edgy jokes (James Gunn) but it is fine for people to make movies about terrified people being eaten by cannibals with D.I.D.

Hollywood/society is sick.

I don't know why people want movies like this.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. James McAvoy and Betty Buckley gave fine performances. The plot isn't worthy of them. In addition to a script that heavily relies on the convenient and popular fears of Disassociative Identity Disorder, it disregards any type of sensible behavior. While teenage girls might be stupid enough not to immediately open their car doors when a stranger gets into their car and their dad vanishes, the absolutely astonishing "haha dude good joke" when one of the girls gets her hands on a walkie-talkie - I could no longer suspend my disbelief and began judging the script much more harshly than I wanted to. When the doctor goes to see her patient, at night, without anyone else - and then is killed! But when the same girl DOESN'T shoot him in the head, I was done. Kevin Wendell Crumb's weakness is a shout out to Rumpelstiltskin - and maybe the girl is a survivor-damaged-Beast like he, but then to link it to Mr. Glass and Unbreakable?! How many things do you want one movie to be? A commentary on child sexual abuse buried within a horror film with callbacks to fairy tales that's also a commentary on social norms and mental disorders - and a sequel to a comic book hero/villain. Holy f*ck - choose one story telling device. Expand

Good acting from Mcavoy, and atmosphere can be thrilling at beginning.
Other than that story is abysmal , other characters (including girls, psychiatrist, total lack of rescuers and zoo workers who are like imbeciles btw, and even most of personas inside McAvoy characters head) behave like morons, have unrealistical solutions and that makes them really unsympathetic. Whole movie is some kind of "super" villain origin story but with really bad point and with elements of snuff/exploitation movie, and making last survivor spared because she was molested as a child and continues to be as teenager is sickening.
This movie is total waste of time.
Mr Shamalayan should find another day job.

Despite James McAvoy's admirable attempt at putting lipstick on this celluloid pig, as well as some allegedly lofty efforts at trying to elevate the tone of the narrative above its derivative, unsettling nature, there's nothing here to make the picture memorable, insightful or, at times, watchable. Keep those hard-earned dollars in your wallet. Expand

Despite the famous director and cast being present in the theatre I still wound up falling asleep! Well it was a late screening that night. However if a movie is good, really good, it will override any fatigue. "Ghost" did that for me at a late show in the summer of 1990 in Honolulu (not that this thing was made by same people). Was fall down exhausted, yet it was so good I stayed wide awake. This thing not only couldn't keep me awake, but sadly is yet another example of the further unraveling of one hit wonder genius writer-director M. Night. James McAvoy good an actor as he is really can't help this latest sham. Expand

However, despite this, Split is The single worst movie I have seen in my entire life. Incredibly unbelievably bad, all on account of the story, if you can call it a story. There is almost nothing to give away in this unoriginal cliche-ridden piece of garbage because little happens that you don't see in trailers. But I'll say "Spoiler Alert" anyway. Here's the plot. By the way this director has no "twist" this time, though people call the ending a twist. It's an easter egg not a twist. It's a silly little tacked on bit of nonsense to top it all off, just in case it wasn't bad enough already - which I assure you, it was! Three girls are kidnapped by a man with 23 personalities. The two bad personalities did it, and they plan to release a 24th personality known as 'the beast' - a kind of Hulk or werewolf or Mr. Hyde if you will, to eat the girls. They succeed and the man gobbles up some of the first two girls, but when he encounters the third, he sees that she cuts herself, and understands from this that she (like he) has been abused (he developed these personalities in response to abuse) and so he lets her live. That's it, my friends. A long dull waste of your time and money. This guy has been making bad movies for decades. The Sixth Sense was his single good film and it's been manure ever since, but this is the absolute worst of them all. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I suppose if you're a big fan of the director (Shyamalan) you might find this movie entertaining. I am not. I found The Sixth Sense beyond my ability to believe and I have never had the patience to watch Unbreakable, which is sort of a pre-requisite to get all the details of this movie. The director seems to believe the way to scare us, is with sudden, loud noises, I however am not a puppy dog. It moves slowly and ponderously through most of the movie. It doesn't require a lot of intellect to detect what is going on. If you like comic book type movies or the slightly supernatural, you may enjoy more than I did. In fairness, there were several good pieces of acting in the film. This guy needs to watch Kubrick, The Shinning, to learn how direct. Kubrick - he ain't. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. stupid and turgid. doesnt have the slow build up of mystery that was the hallmark of Shyamalan's past work. Its just crap piled on top of crap. It doesnt even fall into the so bad its good or amusing category. Its seems like there's a large segment of viewers who desperately want this to be Shyamalan's comeback movie but honestly it's not. Not morbidly funny or schlocky so there are no laughs on offer except for maybe Mcavoy's OTT acting. The "twist" at the end is not a twist but more of an easter egg. The idiots chirping that it was intentional are delusional. A movie should be judged on its own merits and not by any tangential references to any prequels/sequels. Just rent it if you must watch it. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Predictable yawn fest. The shrink's dialogue delivers nothing but exposition. The female protagonist(s) are poorly developed. The dialogue is totally insincere and unapologetically on the nose. McAvoy does the best he can with what he has, and as such is passable. Anya stares a lot with tears. It's not them, it's the direction. It's all the more irritating because there could have been a taut thriller in here, as conceptually it's an interesting notion. However no-one does anything of import to drive the story forward. There's a ticking time bomb, and it just counts down to the inevitable and totally predictable (spoiler alert) twist. Watch 10 Cloverfield Lane instead. Expand

Typical M. Night movie, borefest for me. Is it me or Mr. Night's movies are low-budget, nonimaginative, full of plot holes, and too weird to make them enjoyable. This movie sucked and overhyped.

This movie is a sad meeting of a bad story, a bad director and, in most cases, a bad cast. McAvoy was visibly alone all the time. I feel embarrassed and I'm really sorry.
