Ryan Reynolds and Will Ferrell are great actors in their own right, but they can't sing and it's a complete miscast right from the start. Hardly any of the songs are memorable and the cringe acting doesn't mix will with the theme. Was honestly expecting something a lot better. Expand

The plot has been upended, while a snappy approach to comedy modernizes the approach, including a Judith Dench cameo. Ferrell is a bit toned down (as is Octavia Spencer) and Reynolds shines with his usual comic charms. The plentiful songs are pleasant and tuneful, while the staging shines on spectacle and energetic dancing. Given the star power, this new holiday treat will entertain with lively musical numbers and hip references, while managing to hold onto some Holiday heart. Expand

Spirited brings some freshness to A Christmas Carol. A clever comedy about the spirits for once. Some songs either aren’t that great or drag on too long. The song “Good day to you” should have been nominated though and gets some good laughs.

Perhaps that's a shame, because this film deserves an audience.

I had doubts about the musical angle at first, and in the beginning it started to feel like padding, but I really got into the ambiance and the style after the first 15 minutes. And there are that many songs, they never feel out of place. While there are a couple of scenes that looked a bit green screen-ish, this film has a good production, good songs, and great dance scenes, and the story is a really good twist on the Christmas carol.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Our family was excited for a new take on the Dickens classic. It was nice to see some of the more modern references, such as how social media has degraded society. However, the movie began using profanities so we needed to reevaluate whether our children should watch. We begrudgingly continued, only to find the ghost of Christmas past had sex with someone. Of course, our children were confused. We then turned it off. This is not a Holiday movie. It is trash and filth. Will Farrell and Ryan Reynolds should be ashamed of themselves for making it. Perhaps the 3 ghosts will visit whoever wrote such a sick movie. Expand

This could've been something you'd want to see annually but it's warped by Hollywood's liberal/progressive values yet again, but if you're under the age of 25 you probably don't even know or care. Anyway, the storytelling is further marred by it being a musical, and even that's forced. It's mostly karaoke-quality singing especially when done by Will and Ryan and even the characters often exclaim "oh no, not another one." Will Ferrell, sporting a facelift, seems to be the only one decently cast for this. Ryan is way over-qualified and Octavia Spencer - just how did they talk her into her role?! Again, this could've been Great with better casting and much less singing. Expand

Little do they both know they have plenty to teach each other along the way. I wasn't too sure what to expect with this one, but I decided to give it a shot, and while it's got its fair share of heartwarming and cute moments, it can't help but feel a little too generic and derivative at times. Ferrell and Reynolds make for a funny duo, however, and even their singing is surprisingly good. Supporting performances from others such as Octavia Spencer, Tracy Morgan, etc. are also enjoyable enough, and the songs, while also not feeling the most inspired, are still fun enough to watch thanks to the singing chops of all involved. While the film does feel a little longer than it should as well and becomes a little more convoluted by the end, it's still a charming enough Christmas ride while it lasts. Overall, fun albeit generic musical sequences, charming and enjoyable performances from all involved, and a slightly overstuffed and scattershot story all add up to make for a somewhat clumsy yet still merry and fun enough time. Absolutely!

Spirited is a Broadway comedy musical masquerading as a movie, but if you generally love Broadway musicals then you'll probably love this one too! It's very funny, which should be obvious with Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds in the lead roles. And the film's messages are on point for the Christmas season: Do good things, even if they are just little things, and the world will be a better place. And... there is hope for most everyone, even those who are the worst of us, if we only just try to be better.

Now both of those messages might seem a little sappy, but this is the hope of the holiday season. And if you are too jaded to appreciate this message or the way that its delivered then your heart is probably as tiny and hard as the Grinch's heart. This holiday season, lighten up, lower your emotional defenses and have a feel good moment with this film. It really is wonderful!

It is a movie that has a clear destination: We anticipate the big, awesome climax dance number that features the entire ensemble. It's not quite a good movie, but it's getting there. There is undoubtedly something lacking, and I believe the story's excess of loose ends is the cause. I'm not sure, but it could be the dancing or the length of the movie. Will Ferrell also has some standout moments, and there are some fantastic scenes. In order to prevent excessive singing, the director should have made better use of the cast, such as with Octavia Spencer or Ryan Reynolds. The film's overarching theme probably does a good job of rescuing the plot's remaining unpleasant scenes. Expand

Nearly half a year since this movie was released and I could tell it could be an annual holiday viewing for the whole family. I think I liked that it had a musical theme in there because that makes it stand out out of all the Scrooge film adaptations and it helped add a lot of heart into the movie.
