Directed by Hayao Miyazaki, the film tells the story of a young girl named Chihiro who gets lost in a magical world inhabited by gods and spirits. As she tries to find her way back home, Chihiro learns valuable lessons about friendship, courage, and the importance of family.

The animation in Spirited Away is breathtakingly beautiful, with every frame bursting with color, detail, and imagination. The creatures and landscapes are so richly rendered that they feel like they could come to life at any moment. The music, too, is a perfect complement to the visuals, adding depth and emotion to every scene.

But what truly sets Spirited Away apart is its heart. Despite the fantastical setting, the film is grounded in real human emotions and experiences. Chihiro's journey is one that anyone can relate to, and her growth throughout the film is both inspiring and poignant. By the end of the film, you feel as though you've gone on an incredible journey with her.

In short, Spirited Away is a masterpiece of animated cinema that deserves all the acclaim it has received. It is a film that will stay with you long after the credits have rolled, and that you will want to revisit time and time again. If you haven't seen it yet, do yourself a favor and watch it as soon as possible.

I must say, even now, I haven't encountered a movie quite like Hayao Miyazaki's remarkable animated creation from 2001. Everything about this film, from its characters to the tale it weaves, not to mention the exquisite hand-drawn world it unfolds within, held my complete attention right from the start. It's safe to declare that anyone who hasn't experienced this cinematic gem is definitely missing out on one of the finest hand-drawn animated films ever brought to life.

For me, "Spirited Away" carries a special significance, and I'm certain many others feel the same way. Miyazaki's storytelling imparts a distinctive and intimate touch to the entire narrative. Many situations within the film resonate deeply with viewers, whether it's Chihiro's journey, Haku's and Chihiro’s budding friendship, or the enigmatic and mysterious No-Face trying to find its place in the world. The reason this movie holds such a dear place in my heart is intertwined with a close friend who recommended it to me. While watching, I couldn't help but imagine her stepping into Chihiro's shoes. The film's personal and relatable themes foster a strong connection between the screen and its audience.

At its core, Chihiro's story is one of personal growth. Throughout "Spirited Away," we follow Chihiro through relatable challenges, even though they unfold in Miyazaki's imaginative realm of spirits. Amidst moments of joy and triumph, we witness Chihiro evolve into a stronger individual, shaped by her struggles and moments of adversity.

Since my initial viewing a few years ago, "Spirited Away" has swiftly secured its place as my all-time favorite movie. I'd award it a rating of 9.8/10, coming incredibly close to the realm of cinematic perfection, at least in my eyes. I must admit, I'm quite influenced by my personal connection to the film, but I genuinely believe that Miyazaki truly outdid himself with this creation. While its runtime of 2 hours and 5 minutes demands an investment of time, it's one you'll undoubtedly find worthwhile.

It was the first anime movie i had ever watched and I was completely hooked. To those who do not understand the hidden meanings behind this film: It is not difficult to understand, you must simply think outside the box. It's like snow white, you can call it a stupid movie, with not much of a plot, but when you think about it, the meaning behind it all is very important (which I hope you will someday understand). Anyways, Spirited Away was an excellent movie, but as someone hs previously mentioned, the ending was too rushed. I had expected a longer adventure to Granny's house, or at least a peek to the later years, where one would expect Chihiro to be reunited with Haku. Basically this caused a great flaw in this movie. However, I still recommend it to anyone who hasn't watched it. Expand

I got a tip for this one, after watching the slow boring Tales from Earthsea. Goro Miyazaki, the son, made that one; Hayao Miyazaki, the father, made this one. Spirited Away is an outstanding movie that takes a simple story and makes so much more of it. I probably missed lots of the Japanese references, but this movie works also for me as Westerner. It is the story of a young girl who gets lost in a magic world where she has to save her parents before she can escape it.

Chihiro, the principal character is the key to this movie. She is vulnerable, brave, resourceful and likable. Most anime relegate girls to the side; there to be saved by the male hero and applaud him. They can be all Chihiro is, but never center stage; always in the shadow of a male figure.

This movie could have fallen for this cliché too. Chihiro meets Haku, a young boy that helps her at the start. But he never takes the lead and doesn’t dominate the movie. In fact, he isn’t in most of the movie. And in the end it is Chihiro who saves Haku. The movie is closely knit. On the surface, it feels like a Japanese version of Alice in Wonderland. It has that same mood, that same strangeness. Some characters, like Yubaba seems like the Queen of Hearts. There is that similar feel, but it never feels like a rip-off.

There are many layers to this movie. It isn’t just that Chihiro herself undergoes a story arc, but where she goes she touches everyone: her optimistic nature and kindness affect others. And where the world of spirits is initially hostile to humans, she earns their respect and eventually changes their nature, as they change her. Yubaba, for instance, changes from a hateful person towards a kinder one. Her baby, a selfish individual who never goes out, changes too, when he travels with Chihiro.

There is also a twist near the end of the movie that is foreshadowed throughout the movie. You might find some things strange(I won’t say what because I don’t want to spoil it), but you discover everything is there for a reason.

I would sincerely recommend if you like a layered story with a likable character. I give it a nine not because it isn’t worth a ten, but I always keep that last number in reserve, just in case there is a movie more perfect than this one in its category.

I have always heard pleasant things about this particular film from everybody who has seen it. I have not heard of a single person who did not enjoy Spirited Away. Until 2020, Spirited Away was so popular that it was the highest grossing anime movie of all time. As I began to watch the movie, I was unfortunately disappointed. I did not understand the hype at all. I will not deny that this movie is spectacularly animated with some of the most gorgeous scenes in animated history, but that, to me at least, did not make up for the slow and unspectacular plot. The movie follows a girl named Chihiro, who is often referred to as Sen, as she enters the spirit world. Her patents have been turned into pigs, and to save them, she must get a job at a spirit bath house. Sen is a wonderfully brave girl who has so much love and kindness in her heart that she displays throughout the movie, particularly towards the end, that the viewer cannot help but to smile. I really liked a lot about this movie, but in particular, I loved the unique and imaginative characters and world. Studio Ghibli is known for creating iconic and lovable characters, and this is undoubtably true in this movie. Expand

Let me clear up any misconceptions perhaps generated by that comment: make no mistake, this is a masterpiece. From the moment we follow Chihiro's lazy gaze at the passing townscape from the backseat of the family saloon, we are drawn into another world. This world is sustained by first rate animé-tion and truly breath-taking artwork, culminating in a visual feast. The characters we meet are typically bizarre and wonderfully imaginative without straying too far into an intangible dreamland; you have to remember, we're viewing a cartoon caricature of Japanese culture here, and this is beautifully reflected in the (often grotesque) spirits of the world. The plot is imaginative, lacking cliché and laced with tension, and we actually care about the characters thanks to excellent voice-acting. Stand-out examples of this are found in the characters of Lin and Haku, who are multi-dimensional and emotive. This really is the kind of film that would appeal to anyone, though it requires a perhaps more mature mind to appreciate the effort behind it. So where does it fall short? Well, it is successful in pretty much every aspect: we immediately feel comfortable in adapting to this new and visually overwhelming world, and decide that we would happily spend 3 hours watching Chihiro explore it. Unfortunately, we only just get past two. It's the PACING of this movie that makes us feel like we are facing a framed work of art, but are told we can only stare at the middle section of it. The film's entrance is a lulling experience (Chihiro and her family take a good 15 minutes just to discover the spirit plane, and remember, that's about 1/8th of the movie already). The ending, contrary to this, is inexplicably and unfortunately rushed: *SPOILERS* By the time our heroine is given train tickets to see Zeniba, she has amassed a cute collection of comrades to join her, and so we expect another hour or so of narrow escapes from dangerous situations while they realise how important they are to each other, and the fuzzy Disney allegory is complete; after all, this is meant to be an adventure. However, the train journey and the trip through the swamp are ENTIRELY uneventful. On reaching Zeniba, the troupe enjoy tea together (and as a pointless sideline, No-Face decides to stay with Zenoba to help her) and then Haku arrives, providing the remaining "adventurers" an equally uneventful trip home. This is, of course, until Chihiro randomly remembers Haku's name and breaks the spell binding him to work for the repulsive Obaba. The plot now flies along faster than the viewer feels confortable with, and the "final test" promised by Obaba turns out to be one question, which Chihiro immediately answers, though her method is never explained. So all is well, Chihiro hurredly rejoins her parents, who of course don't remember a thing of the spirit world, and the movie aruptly ends on a "I-should-be-ok-for-the-first-day-of-school-as-I've-just-survived-the-most-magical-journey-ever" dynamic. *SPOILERS END* This disappointingly mellow and rushed ending marrs what is otherwise a masterpiece. Thus, it falls short of a respectable 9, but to give it a 7 (a grade I usually reserve for mindless but enjoyable action flicks) would undervalue its achievement. An 8 it is then. I would recommend seeing this beautiful film, but ask if you don't mind leaving wanting more. Expand

I applaud in particular the work of Daveigh Chase who lends her voice to Sin, and performs very convincingly.

The animations in Spirited Away are probably the best I have ever seen. They are simple yet beautiful, and the creators have a real knack for detail. They succeed in making Sin feel very believable and lifelike in her actions as a teen girl.

The world Spirited Away presents is weird, and even after sitting through the whole movie, more questions will remain a mystery than answered. Although this can be seen as a deficiency, I see it as a pro. The world is so magically beautiful and unknown that, having answered no questions, it will stick in your head a long time after watching keeping you wondering.

The story doesn't amount as much to the magnificence of this movie as the animations and fantastical world do, and is a mere classical child narrative. The protagonist heroine gets in trouble because of a mistake, is brought into a prickly situation by an evil character, but the resilience of the good-natured heroine and some good-natured helpers win out over evil. The story is not bad, considering Spirited Away has a child audience, and even add enough nuance in its characters to make them more interesting than black-and-white stereotypes.

The use of the theme of love and it's effect on the story is cliché here and will not surprise anyone in any way, but is not mellow and its subtle enough to be enjoyed by an older audience.

Spirited Away is a top-notch movie for children and can equally be enjoyed by an older audience. It successfully connects with a dual audience and should be applauded for that.

We had to share our computer time and she forced me to sit there and watch this. I didn't like this film at all, and was constantly throwing a tantrum at every scene. First of all I had never liked anime, probably my sister had heard about this from school. And secondly I could have been playing browser games instead of watching this. But now when I look back at it, this is one of the best anime films I have watched. However, since I saw this film over twelve years ago, my knowledge is not very fresh and I might make some mistakes while writing this review.
As I have grown into becoming an artist now, the idea of this film has started to make sense. The film begins in an absolutely surreal manner. The idea behind the girl's parents turning into pigs after eating like them is quite scary, which is exactly what the film wants us to feel. I remember I was thinking why she doesn't sit and eat with them. I have always been such a foodie, I might have as well ended up like them if I were there. And then this girl had to run away and live among the monsters. Each one of them was traumatising, except the woman whom Spider-Eggman convinces by giving her a roasted lizard.
Now I won't go too much in detail for the characters or the story, since I don't think I remember anything correctly. As I write this review I am getting occasional glimpse of some scenes, particularly the slime monster one. So all I'm gonna talk about are the other aspects of this film. First of all, this film is a dream for any postmodernist art lover. The idea of random things happening, the characters who can only exist in a fever dream interacting with the girl and the old woman - everything about this is like something Salvador Dali would be proud of.
The only problem I had in this film is from the plot holes. I could be wrong since I watched it so long back, that too while throwing a tantrum and not wanting to watch this film (I have completely forgotten the part where the black Shy Guy meets the girl; I believe it happens in this film?). The part where the girl tries cleaning the muck from the bath and the slime monster gets upset and start chasing her; how do they suddenly become friends? Just because the monster got tired from chasing her? That scene has never made any sense to me. Also who was that boy who came in the beginning? How come he never got to do the work the girl was doing, irrespective of whether he himself was a monster or a human? Either way it makes the film look like a nightmare, which I'm pretty sure it wasn't trying to.
Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi (this is the actual name of this film) is the first and by far the only Hayao Miyazaki film I have seen. Even though I don't know much about his signature style, this film gave me a vague idea of how he is different from the conventional anime artists. In case all his films are like this, I'd really hope to see them all. And I'd personally want to apologise for the bad time I gave my sister while watching it.

But, visuals aside the plot is really bland and very bare. Lots of folklore references to keep the geeky entertained, lots of bright colors and weird creatures for the kiddies, and a simple enough story for the "mom and dads" to enjoy.

However, the movie is just to overpraised for what it is. A colorful simple folktale.

If it wasn't for the notoriety this movie has in the anime community, I might have been more lenient. But this movie is clearly riding on Studio Ghibli's reputation and doing everything it can to look and act the part. Which is a shame as it clearly could have been allot more if released from Ghibli's formulaic storytelling.

Overall:
Spirited Away is still charming and fun to watch. But don't expect some marvel in storytelling. Just expect a Studio Ghibli film. In that regard it succeeds in every category.

Anyway, super recomendado.

At first most characters appear to be bad-tempered or even evil. Nevertheless, along the way they all turn out rather nice. Therefore, none of the characters are categorizable into the typical archetypes of good or bad. This "realness" of the characters' personalities, however, makes the movie's storytelling very unusual to the habits and expectations of us western moviegoers. Moreover, one might miss a sense of having learned a lesson over the course of the film, for the parents do not rethink their piggishness, and Chihiro, despite many experiences and therefore many opportunities, does not appear to have grown much out from her childish vulnerability and dependence either. For these reasons, and despite its vivid imagination, Spirited Away (has great potential, but) might not satisfy everyone. However, the viewer might learn a lesson of freeing oneself from expectations and opening up for the unconventional. Expand

For example, the characters must have reasons for their actions. And the very presence of a character must be necessary to the story. Don't get me wrong -- I have no problem with metaphor and fantasy worlds, I only ask that the storyteller lay the ground rules and follow them. Unfortunately, there is no rhyme or reason to this story. It's as if Miyazaki dropped acid one day and wrote everything down. The only reason I gave it a 4 is because his world, though disturbing and nonsensical, is so compellingly original. But watching it was a bit like chewing tinfoil. Expand
