A movie that had high potential led to a disastrous and boring movie. The writing of this movie is just terrible and the plot is just meh. At the end of the day, it is just a mid movie.

While the cast is still overall good, the plot is overstuffed and convoluted -- at times relying on tropes that might not even be suitable for a daytime soap opera. Spider-Man 3's misguided script is full of awkward melodrama, missing the fun and thrills of its two superb predecessors, while it also opts to forgo focusing on one charismatic villain for three dull and underwritten baddies. Didn't care for it when it came out, Didn't care for it now. I felt have multiple villains was a huge mistake as it kind of muddled the story. Couple that with the worst acting of the series and you have yourself a stinker.

Spider-Man 3 nonetheless would be able to overcome those obstacles with an excellent performance from Tobey Maguire who infects the audience with a pleasing amount of cringe. To be serious though, the mostly positive message is driven by an impressive amount of emotional weight that works very well as a final chapter to this classic spidey trilogy. I laughed and thought, ‘that’s about right’. If you have seen my previous reviews, you would have seen how much I LOVED Spider-Man 2. Therefore, it’s understandable how I was super excited to watch the last chapter of the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man trilogy. It’s also understandable how big of a DISAPPOINTMENT 3 was. It has worse CGI and special effects than its predecessor (seriously, what the heck? This movie was made three years after 2, and I expected an improvement or it staying the same, not a step backwards! This was 2007, not the 80s!). In addition to this, the story suffered from having too many villains (one is great, because you get to focus on one conflict. Two is nice because they have intertwining tales that spice things up, but three? Why do we need three? It just makes everything confusing and hard to follow. Have you seen the movie, Batman & Robin? It features three villains also, and it was such a great movie! [Haha, that was a joke]). The film also was hurt by mere stupidity. How many revivals did they have to have, and what the heck was with all that “probably just a bird” idiocy? Was the extensive strutting scene absolutely necessary, or the black-suited Spider-Man? Why couldn’t Venom just have found Eddie and save us all that cringiness during that time. And that instant side-change of the New Goblin? Why? Possibly it was just an excuse for a couple of fight scenes. Also, if someone took a grenade to the face in real life, no way could that person survive. The plot line is also super predictable at times. Bottom line: if you haven’t seen Spider-Man 3, good for you. Watch the first two and skip this one. I haven’t seen The Amazing Spider-Man yet as of this writing, but I can almost guarantee it’s better than this movie, so watch that one instead. Expand

Having him change his mind at the last possible second and then show up in time to get his butt pummeled for ten minutes straight is a terrible way to end a franchise. Nothing about it works like it should. There are plot illogicalities that will make absolutely anyone ask themselves, "Huh?" For starters, why did Parker think it was a good idea to make out with that new girl in front of everyone, then follow up with a planned proposal to his official girlfriend? Was he oblivious that she just might be there watching the whole time? Then, when the girl shows up out of nowhere and talks about how she kissed Spider-Man, it never seems to register in him that something's not right then. So then, after it's proven that Parker's a douche, we immediately are given a sad scene with Parker crying as we learn Sandman was his uncle's killer. Uh, okay, I thought the movie wanted me to feel resentment for Parker's overt arrogance for a second there, but this sad music wants me to feel sympathetic for something else? Also, I know a romantic subplot is necessary, and I expected it completely, but most of this movie was a soap opera, one for which I wasn't rooting for the main angst figure that is Parker. Parker does stupid, insensitive things the entire film. When he's not making us hate him by hurting everyone's emotions (and, in Harry's case, detonating a grenade next to his face), he's trying to do it by being a whiny little bitch who doesn't seem to understand why any of it's happening. The soap opera factor reaches critical mass, though, when Harry tells Parker he's "the other guy" that MJ is after, right after MJ tells him in tears that it's over while he pulls out his engagement ring, also in tears. I understand some amount of drama is to be expected in this movie, but we're so relentlessly bombarded with histrionic drivel and sad piano music it's impossible not to get sick of it long before it's over. I mean, for Christ's sake, we get an -AMNESIA- plot device, one that's become a parody for TV dramas in itself. Further, one of my main reasons for going into the theater was to see Venom kick some ass. Unfortunately, while the romantic subplot was unfolding, and something which I guess is supposed to resemble comic relief in the infamous "emo-Parker" sequences, I spent the first two-thirds of the movie asking myself, "Where the Hell is Venom?" When he finally got on, we get nothing at all worth watching. Also, referring back to the grenade exploding a few inches by Harry's face, if anyone didn't notice, that same grenade that managed to cause just a burn completely obliterated Venom. Nothing else really comes together to redeem it. The dialogue is unbelievably stupid and trite, the special effects are overproduced to oblivion and silliness, and the best parts involved the news station comedy bits. Don't even get me started on the emo-Parker comic relief scene, which could not possibly have been more over-the-top inappropriate. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to be laughing, or if it was some kind of message about Parker still being a spiteful jerk. I saw no good reason to feel bad for him while he cold-heartedly caused every event of his own miserable luck. Crushingly disappointing after the ridiculously awesome previous entry. Just abysmal. Cramming over twenty years of comic history into a single hour of a movie won't help with storyline or plot, but it'll definitely help sales. One of the main problems of the movie is that the storyline rushes and moves too fast. Scenes skip around to the point where you have to be paying close attention to what's going on, or you'll miss important plot points. Having said that, I'll talk about individual processes. Topher Grace's performance of Venom is less-than-spectacular. Venom is a character who's the pure essence of evil. He originally had a distorted, screech-like voice, but now it's only slightly deepened by Grace's. The abundance of bad lines that Grace has don't help his performance, either. "I like being bad. It makes me happy." That was one of the lines that made the movie feel like a big, unimportant joke. I did like the special effects of the Sandman and Thomas Hayden Church's performance. The parts of Venom could've been cut out to save for another movie and this would've been great. Weak subplots and overly-fast pacing put the third film as bad as Fantastic 4 : Rise of the Silver Surfer. Expand

Wow. After seeing the villains in this one, I propose, that in "Spider-Man 4," they have Spider-Man fight a T-Rex with a laser beam, a flying shark with a tiger's head, a 90-foot tall Hitler, and the 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

The sequel I liked even more. Characters were more fleshed out, grew more, and developed more so that by the time the loose ends from the first film ended, there were entirely new threads to deal with for the third movie. Needless to say, I had high expectations. I was sorely disappointed. The dialogue was awful. Don't give me comic book cheesy. The first two movies had plenty of comic book cheese that I enjoyed as much as the next person. This movie was just poorly written, poorly thought out. There was no chemistry between Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst. To top it all off, the poorly written lines were given even worse delivery by the actors. The Sand Man effects were good, the Venom effects not so much. A complete miscast in Topher Grace for Eddie Brock/Venom. The only two scenes worth anything were: the Bruce Campbell cameo scene. While expected, it was highly amusing, and the very seventies Saturday Night Fever scene where the new "dark" Peter Parker tries to be cool and fails abysmally. And when did "dark and not very good" equate to emo? Everything from the darker, eye covering hair to eye-liner screamed emo punk. With such high expectations and such a big let down, I can't justify giving this movie any score. Expand

The action shots were done too tightly leaving the fights undecernable as apposed to the many wide shots used in previous films so you could actually whatch the action happening. The script was waaaaaay too cheesy (even for a Spider-man film). The villians were used as cheap excuses to add action as opposed to further plot and there were far too many of them. As a result none were developed into their full potential as an actual nemisis (as Vemon was in the comics and the animated series as well as the Green Goblin). By trying to sell to the family audience these charcters end up being side thoughts as opposed to the harrowing evil they were originally. Then there are the overlylong silly sequences (such as a elaborate swing dance section in which it feels as though Mr. Raimi was auditioning for Chicago 2 rather than making a real movie) as well as Bruce Campells return as comedic relief. All in all the movie had some decent parts but Tobey McGuire is not a virsital enough actor, the script was an exercise in silliness, the directing was sloppy and undecernable at times, and nothing was developed enough to make you care about what was happening to the characters. I mean really sad: there are multiple scenes with nearly every major character tearing up. A blubbering, baby-faced Tobey Maguire sealed the doom of this film which turned out not to be escapist entertainment of any sort. Because of the spectacular arial special effects, the darkness of the film feels stilted. There are character and plot continuity problems which distract, also. I didn't connect with the characters: none were particularly sympathetic. What made Venom a spider versus some other type of villian is puzzling. Why Sandman grows to a 200-300 feet size is also unexplained. It also felt long--it was at least one hour before Spiderman even started to turn into the evil, black version. [***SPOILER ALERT***] Topher Grace as VENOM??? are you kidding me??? The Baddest, most vile and coolest Spidey villain played by that wimp from that 70's show!? Venom is hardcore, he was portrayed as a one dimensional, wimp in this movie. The ending too was just plain stupid, and sappy. Please Mr. Raimi don't go the way of Lucas and ruin your brilliant Superhero franchise! I implore you, but you may have with this stinker! Expand

I liked the first spider-man, the second was just stolen from superman II. i would advise anyone to just wait until this movie is on dvd, cause it is an abomination! Nothing like at the end of the movie having sandman, and spider-man crying, wtf! please do not make another spider-man movie. if you go and see this movie than you are part of the problem. Expand

Most often dull. They waited to long to gte to Venom, a character who could fill an entire movie on his own

Loooooooong and boring. Tobey can't play a bad guy, looks like a parody of himself. Great effects but what's new. Please stop here and don't make us suffer thru a 4th one.

It was terrible. There was very little entertainment value. Special effects were bad, script was terrible. Bruce Campbell was the only entertaining bit.

No pacing, no build-up, no suspense, no excitement, nothing holding it all together, just alternating between cartoonish action sequences, and unbelievably tedious and tiresome pseudo-sentimental conversations. I don't know what happened to the director who made Spiderman 2. Maybe a little black glob of guck came from outer space and took him over. There was one excellent scene, the one where Flint Marko becomes Sandman, which had me saying "Cool!". Too bad there weren't more like it in the film. Expand

You could tell the actors didn't buy into the script. People in the audience were actually laughing out loud during serious emotional scenes. I guess it wasn't a horrible film, just really really bad, and considering that it followed two brilliant predecessors with Spiderman 1 and 2, that made it all the more disappointing. I did actually like Topher Grace as Venom and Bruce Campbell's short scene was very funny. I really hope they don't make a fourth. Batman & Robin anyone? Expand

I saw this movie with a group of 26 people, ranging from 9-35. Everyone over the age of 18 hated it. And most of the people under the age of 18 liked it. So where do we begin? First off, as many have noted, there are too many villains. They all contriibute to the themes of the movie but none are fully fleshed out. And I am sick of movies using predictable coincedences to move the plot along. [**SPOILERS***] Seriously, the one guy who happens to fall into a pit where scientists are changing the molecular properties of sand just happens to be the guy who killed Peter's uncle? And the one person on earth that happens to stumble upon the alien symbiote just happens to be Spider-Man? When Peter and MJ are fighting, Gwen Stacy just happens to be eating in the same restaurant? When Spider-Man gets the alien suit off, Eddie Brock just happens to be in the same church? You can not be serious! Most movies rely on one or two coincidences to move the plot along, but this is just absurd. The fights just seem to drag on as does this movie. Peter's dark side is portrayed so comically, it's laughable. Sand Man's power is so ill-defined that it is not clear at all what this guy can do. Overall, this movie is the biggest movie disappointment since Matrix Revolutions. It gets an A for special effects, and Venom is nicely done (for the whole 10 minutes he appears in this movie), but the movie is a mess. And did I mention how bad this film is? I know you're going to watch it anyways. But you were warned. Expand

Topher Grace as "Venom" is like Jack Black as "The Crow", totally miscast! Guess I'll have to wait for the next "Batman" in order to se a great hero film. So long, Spidey, it was good while it lasted.
