I created a metacritic account when I saw the low score this movie received. This movie is great. Dustin Hoffman does a great job. Sheron Stone great job. Liv Schreiber great job. Very well done. I read the book after watching the movie, and then I watched the movie again. The only reason I'm not giving this a 10 is because the movie was not very accurate with the book. Other than that, it was good.

at times the acting is poor but the rest of the time this is an intense thriller which is easily one of the cleverest and best sci-fi's.

Something ordinary turn out to be something incredible, Sphere was a fantastic and an intense journey, Sphere leaving still an unanswered mystery but it still absolutely amazing.

I watched this movie as a kid and found it a lot of fun and a bit scary. That was a while ago. Watching it again the movie still holds pretty strong - only the ending isn't so good. But with an excellent cast and an interesting story/setting,I watched this movie as a kid and found it a lot of fun and a bit scary. That was a while ago. I expected a lot from this movie considering how much I loved the novel. I would've given this a 10, if I watched half of the movie only. They altered the way the ending happened. I'm not gonna spoil it but they changed it in a way thatI expected a lot from this movie considering how much I loved the novel. I would've given this a 10, if I watched half of the movie only. In other words, it would be a better measure to see which other movies were liked by people who liked a given movie. In technical (machine learning/statistical) terms, some kind of a clustering of movies based on an empirical similarity matrix (created by asking people's opinion) would be a more useful characterization of a given movie than just simply assigning a score to a movie.… Expand

Un poil tiré par les cheveux, un tantinet naïf dans sa résolution et un peu maladroit sur quelques détails, Sphère est tiré d'un bouquin de Michael Crichton, ceci expliquant cela sans doute, car autant dire que les livres du bonhomme ne sontUn poil tiré par les cheveux, un tantinet naïf dans sa résolution et un peu maladroit sur quelques détails, Sphère est tiré d'un bouquin de Michael Crichton, ceci expliquant cela sans doute, car autant dire que les livres du bonhomme ne sont pas vraiment des parangons de génie en matière de Science-Fiction.

Pour autant, le principe de l'objet extra-terrestre aux vertus étranges déjà vu et déjà lu -ici ou ailleurs et auparavant- n'en est pas moins assez bien exploité et plutôt bien construit. Le mystère s'épaissit puis se déroule au fil de ce huis clos sous-marin qui n'est pas sans évoquer dans son ambiance Abyss, l'autre film naïf dans le genre.

Le rythme reste solide malgré les deux heures bien tassées, porté par un Dustin Hoffman qui n'a pas besoin de forcer son talent pour apporter un charisme immédiat à son personnage, entouré des comparses Jackson et Stone qui s'en tirent avec les honneurs.

La mise en scène rigoureuse de Levinson contribue à sortir par le haut un film qui finit contre toute attente par retomber sur ses pieds et se révèle un agréable divertissement.… Expand

Yikes. It's a movie with a fantastic concept, and a great cast that tries to keep it alive - but the plot disintegrates into complete nonsense. It tries to be mysterious and present some kind of psychological current, but the character'sYikes. Fallen became the first bomb that year but aside from that, those film by that studio'll get a cult following. Now that Sphere came into my attention even though that I've been thinking about that it's scary and boy, was I right. Considering the fact that it's a sci-fi psychological thriller with a few scares. A team of experts, four doctors, Dustin Hoffman, Sharon Stone, Samuel L. Jackson and Liev Schreiber and a U.S. Navy Capt., Peter Coyote are assembled and taken to the Habitat near the spacecraft which is been there for nearly 300 years. Norman believes there's been a plane crash but later said there was no plane crash and Barnes said it's a spacecraft crash through underwater. So they got the Habitat, went underwater to look inside the ship and they found a sphere inside it. OK, so I don't mind this movie as such. It's just not as not as good as I thought it would been. It has it's moments like when after Harry went inside the sphere and wakes up, he eats the squid which he hates and then he started choking it out and the scene where the Habitat is on fire caused by an alien intelligence from the sphere "Jerry". They realise that Jerry is able to see and hear everything that happens on the Habitat. Of course the film had some scares like I said and yeah I found it to be an okay film so I guess that's it for me.… Expand

I think this is a good but somehow forgotten science fiction movie. I like the ideas, cast and story. It is based on the book Sphere by Michael Crichton who is mostly know as the guy who wrote Jurassic Park. I said it is a science fictionI think this is a good but somehow forgotten science fiction movie. I like the ideas, cast and story. It is based on the book Sphere by Michael Crichton who is mostly know as the guy who wrote Jurassic Park. I said it is a science fiction movie but it has also elements that I can describe as thriller or psychological drama / horror. The story starts when a cross science team is assembled to an examination of a plane crash in the Pacific Ocean. To everyone surprise there is no plane and it is far more serious. A spacecraft was found that crashed there approx 300 years before. The scientist are tasked to gather all information they could. However there are many surprises, twists and the ship is not what is seems. I am heavily avoiding spoilers here so I am sorry to be vague. I liked the story as it was completely different from anything I expected and I must add in a good way. After Rian Johnsons mess with Star Wars the term “Subverting expectations” has become equal to make **** stories. Back to the review. The story works and with the great cast it is an enjoyable movie. There is also a lot of interesting ideas and stuff to discuss. For the cast they have Dustin Hoffman, Samuel Jackson, Lieve Schreiber and Sharon Stone in the lead roles. All deliver a great performance and work well together. The good cast aka chemistry improves the movie. Also they have some good special effects for its time. I was satisfied but hesitate in making a statement if those hold up well today. The sets however look still good. The rest is history. It flopped at the box office and was not well received by critics. However the audience liked the movie far better. Overall I see this movie as a hidden gem. Not a masterpiece but worth watching for the idea and cast.… Expand

Sphere is a classic fantasy thriller of the 90s. There is a good cast here and not a bad plot in its tie-up.
