I must say I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, a terrific performance by Jake Gyllenhaal, keeping up the great track record. Writing by Kurt Sutter and music by the late James Horner alongside a perfectly chosen supporting cast (except for 50I must say I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, a terrific performance by Jake Gyllenhaal, keeping up the great track record. Once again Director Antoine Fuqua delivers one of the best dramas of the year. I've been a fan of his since Training Day and The Equalizer was just really good. Now, coming to Southpaw, I thought the trailer was really good, but might spoilOnce again Director Antoine Fuqua delivers one of the best dramas of the year. I've been a fan of his since Training Day and The Equalizer was just really good. Now, coming to Southpaw, I thought the trailer was really good, but might spoil too much. Then I saw this, and WOW, I realized I shouldn't have seen the trailer. First if all,(it's pretty obvious), Jake Gyllenhaal can really act into many different roles. He is really good in this film and so is Forest Whitaker. Oona Laurence is also pretty good too. But how Fuqua directed this with his own style was just so fun to watch, and I really want to see the next movie of his. Toward, the last half of the movie, the film did start to drag and I could see some people saying it was bad, but really you gotta see this movie, as this is one of those unique movies that has an actor really into his role. Also side-note: this film was much more bloodier than I expected.… Expand

You get to see Hope at the top, plummet to the bottom and then work his way back up. Along side Gyllenhaal, Southpaw stars Rachel McAdams, Forest Whitaker and 50 Cent! Written by Sons Of Anarchy writer, Kurt Sutter, and backed by Eminem (who was originally going to star as Hope) and his people taking care of the music side, this film is hard hitting and intense throughout it. I spent the movie waiting for Eminem's "Phenomenal" to start playing and it comes in at such a perfect spot. Gyllenhaalhas been picking great roles in movies recently and becomes completely immersed in the roll, I recognized him only by his face, he changes completely for the roll. All in all, this movie has a good story, different from the typical underdog boxing story, some serious fighting and quite good acting overall, especially a great performance from Gyllenhaal. Definitely worth the watch, sports movie fans will enjoy this one.… Expand

Saw this after Creed and while it didn't live up to that Southpaw still packs a punch. You really root for Billy Hope to turn his life around mainly because of Jake Gyllenhaal's performance. A better flick than most of the latter dramas. I dunno about the critics side of this movie review, but the real audience should have no problem enjoying this film. Great drama, one of the best I've seen in a very long time, and this is coming from Kurt Sutter (Sons of Anarchy) he wrote an excellent movie that tells the tale of sports, addiction, grief, and pure frigging talent. It's not only a boxing film, but a film with emotion, drama, human values which connects the chord. The father - daughter relationship will make you cry. A person who has lost everything, his wife, daughter, fortune.....how he comes back. Yes this is a story of hope. There is so much that I can say about it, but I shall say (write) this. Every single scene and acting is beyond believable and immerse, this movie takes you to a emotional roller coaster of desire and deceptions of each feeling each character has and shares trough their acting very heavy and in a intensive passive way. (watch it you'll know)

The movie is well edited, the fight editions camera angles are extremely well made and very believable like if you see it in TV. But, for me, it was a personal "intimated edition" (if I can call it like that) in which you feel though out the movie the sincere and honest emotions that this movie shares all around... and not only from the main actor shoes.

The movie is one of those few movies that keeps you from the edge of your seat. I recommend this movie with my eyes close. A truly spectacular experience.… Expand

Director Antoine Fuqua uses his mastery of the form to create many compelling moments and outstanding images. Expectedly, there are several extended, but not especially original boxing scenes. This film might have more effective if there were moments of humor to lighten the load. As it stands, the potential for a truly powerful picture is weakened by its relentless seriousness. Gyllenhaal's performance is impressive, but the plot's predictability, the director's heavy handedness and the harsh dark drama impede its full potential.… Expand

There's a simple combo in boxing called "one-two", which is a jab followed by a cross, it's a basic move familiar to boxers. Southpaw has the same essence, you might see it coming, yet the production and acting are amazing, it still makes for an effective spectacle. Jake Gyllenhaal especially has produced one of his most engaging performances, it's no understatement that the film rests on his shoulder and he carries with beyond mediocrity.

Story is admittedly unoriginal. It's a boxer's struggle to get his life together after an incident, one has seen this premise in Rocky and practically many other similar movies. A bit difference is it opens when Billy Hope (Jake Gyllenhaal) is on the peak of his career. Usually, boxing movie doesn't depict much what happens during or after the big fights, so the slight chance in direction is welcomed.

What follows is pretty much expected journey of self-discovery through much hardship. There's so much focus on Jake Gyllenhaal and he doesn't disappoint in the slightest. His boxer persona is ridden with rage, occasionally socially awkward and pretty much unable to cope. It's these flaws that made him identifiable and halfway through audience would root for him like it's an actual title fight.

Other cast like Forest Whitaker, Curtis Jackson and the little Oona Laurence bring the story together. Granted, each represents a stereotype, but the relationships, either it's dysfunctional or platonic serves Billy's character development very well. The father-daughter bond is impressively done, it's the best family display after Matthew McConaughey's Interstellar.

There are a few flaws though. Some of the plot devices feel forced as though it for the sake of setting the scenario and the antagonists are excessively vilified. However, there's a degree of effort to make this a legitimate boxing film. Details such as the technical aspects, preparation and life style are present, boxing fans wouldn't be disappointed.

Southpaw is, objectively, an overused story, but the energy from production and brilliant performance by Jake Gyllenhaal are so infectiously inspiring and uplifting.… Expand

Is Southpaw cliched and generic? Yes. It is your typical boxing movie. If you do not like boxing movies and sports movies in general, you will not like Southpaw. If you do not like boxing movies and sports movies in general, you will not like Southpaw. However, though I find the sports cliches boring, I do greatly enjoy boxing movies and Southpaw is no exception. A brilliant blending of the boxing subgenre and melodrama, Southpaw effectively provokes your emotions throughout and really gets you going. Honestly, I felt like I wanted to go out and box somebody after watching this film, which is a great feeling. Though generic, Southpaw has a really great cinematic quality to it that I can only describe as "movie magic". It really lights a fire under you and inspires you to get on out there. However, it is imperfect. Aside from being cliched, Southpaw hints at some other subplots that it never really explores, making you wonder why the heck they were there to begin with. Fortunately, the direction from Antoine Fuqua is electric and really picks up where the script slacks off and, even better, Jake Gyllenhaal is phenomenal. Honestly, in a career full of great performances, this has to be up there for him. He is truly entrancing as Billy Hope and really captures the true essence of the character perfectly. You are rooting for him at the same time you recognize that he is incredibly troubled. Forest Whitaker is also very good here. Overall, Southpaw is your stereotypical boxing movie, but I happen to like boxing movies, so I really liked it even if it is cliche.… Expand

The best place to start with this movie is with the star Jake Gyllenhaal. This guy has managed to transform himself again into a completely different character. This guy has managed to transform himself again into a completely different character. Once again I was completely engulfed by his performance and he lost himself in another role. He has been on a roll after some great performances in Prisoners and Nightcrawler last year. Gyllenhaal has been aggressively hunting for his first Oscar nomination and even more so after being snubbed last year for Nightcrawler. This performance may not be better than Nightcrawler’s but Soutpaw is a completely different film and its not just an acting showcase but its also a great achievement for director Antoine Fuqua. Gyllenhaal showed a lot of dedication for his role by working incredibly hard in order to get in shape. He has never looked this fit in any other film.

Forest Whitaker is also outstanding in this movie. He is just the perfect fit for a boxing training. He is naturally a pretty big guy and he brings his A-game for this role. I’m sure the academy has got to put both Gyllenhaal and Whitaker’s performances in consideration for the 2016 Oscars although I do not think that they are guaranteed to be nominated. Rachael McAdams was great in this movie and 50 Cent. Who knew 50 Cent was actually a good actor? This is definitely the best role I’ve seen him play.

Southpaw is certainly one off Antoine Fuqua’s best films. This film is very emotionally engaging and there were several times where this movie really gave me the chills. The boxing was very well directed which is obviously very important and its sometimes overlooked. From a direction stand point this film might be the best Fuqua has done to date which is pretty impressive considering some of his past works.

This film is great but is still not perfect. Boxing films do have their clichés and Southpaw does not completely avoid them. There are some resemblances to Rocky, Million Dollar Baby and other boxing films, but for the most part I was able to overlook that because of the great performances and direction. The other small issue that I had with this film was the young girl played by Oona Laurence. I know that kids are not easy to work with and this young girl was really good in most of his scenes but there were just a few issues in some scenes and her performance just wasn’t quite consistent. Despite these issues I really enjoyed Southpaw and I would recommend this film to any movie fan.… Expand

While it offers nothing fresh, it is a production that leads audiences going through characters study, each and every consequences of their acts, as well as a journey to finding back the strength that has been masked by protagonist's self-centered behavior and arrogance. The main asset of the film is definitely Jake Gyllenhaal himself who has incredibly executing the bad tempered, brutal and depressing characteristics of Billy Hope. James Horner has done an amazing job in composing the scores which intensify the emotional engagement and dark moments faced by the characters especially in one of the impressive scene when Oona Laurence who played Leila blaming the fault of her dad. Other than the boxing theme, audiences might have seen the story for times but the inspiring messages such as we couldn't control everything in our lives and God always has a plan to teach us a lesson are worth for a watch.… Expand

Southpaw was decent flick with many flaws. Jake Gyllenhaal dose a terrific performance in this movie has he put in the energy and the hard work into this character. Oona Laurence was also great in this movie and so was Rachel McAdams and Forest Whitaker. The movie is a little bit cliche at times and it's pretty predictable since it's doing the tragic story with Gyllenhaal putting his life back together kind of plot line. I was going into this expecting a "slug-fest" sort of movie, like the old Rocky movies, but instead received one part boxing and two parts personal struggle outside the ring. While it wasn't what I was expecting, it did well enough as it was.I was going into this expecting a "slug-fest" sort of movie, like the old Rocky movies, but instead received one part boxing and two parts personal struggle outside the ring. While it wasn't what I was expecting, it did well enough as it was. While the story was somewhat (or perhaps a little more than such) predictable, it still evoked emotion when wanted to. When it wanted you to feel happiness, a smile spread across your face. When it wanted you to feel sadness, your eyes teared up, or a tear or two escaped and rolled down your cheek.

It wasn't all about the fights, like I was expecting, as I've said. It was more of an artsy movie, focusing in on a man's fall from grace and rekindled "Hope" and drive to come back out on top. Personally, while it wasn't what I expected, it certainly had a near perfect balance of fighting (exterior conflict) and personal struggle (internal conflict; such as anger management, alcoholism, and depression). I give it an 8 for 1.) Jake Gyllenhaal's acting, 2.) the movie's ability to evoke particular emotions at particular moments, and 3.) the brilliance with which the final fight scene was filmed (despite the expected outcome).

While I don't see it winning any Oscar's (expect perhaps for Gyllenhaal's phenomenal acting), it is definitely worth a watch.… Expand

The sound effects were great. The biggest problem with the movie was the boxing Cliche. Its almost similar to rocky 3. The training montage wasn't big enough and the bond between Jake's and Forest's cha racters wasn't shown enough in the training montage.The whole movie was shown in the trailer.

In the end Southpaw is a must see movie for gyllenhaal's performance but don't expect anything new to the boxing genre.… Expand

Wow. Even though this film might be solely driven by its leading man, it still packs a serious emotional punch. Jake Gyllenhaal triumphs in a cliche; although, gripping and well acted story of redemption.

I can't say much on Rachel McAdamsWow. Even though this film might be solely driven by its leading man, it still packs a serious emotional punch. Jake Gyllenhaal triumphs in a cliche; although, gripping and well acted story of redemption.

I can't say much on Rachel McAdams because SPOILER: She dies. Very early in the film which sets in motion Billy's Downfall and inevitable redemption. I can see why people soil have problems reacting to this death as we never got much time to develop but McAdams nails the material she's given, as always.

Aside from Gyllenhaal, Forest Whitaker next best as far as performances go, just great emotional acting and the bond he forms with Gyllenhaal was one of my favourite parts of the film. He also adds much needed comic relief when things get too dull. And they do get DULL.

One of my only criticisms is how gruelling it can be to watch Billy suffer so much, it's like there wasn't enough the writers could throw at him to f**k up his life, it just keeps coming (Looking at you Sutter). The ending however is well earned and should have you leaving the cinema feeling teary eyed and inspired! Enjoy.… Expand

But at the same time we do see some of the very best boxing action ever witnessed on film. It’s hard and fast and brutal. I was biting at my finger nails watching each and every fight.

However this is a story of that one person you think you can never live without. That one person, that sits next to you on the couch and laughs at your stupid jokes. The one person you can’t imagine growing old without. Having Children, or at least, a few Dogs and Cats with.

Billy Hope played by Jake Gyllenhaal (Donnie Darko, Prisoner) plays a Middleweight World Champion Boxer at the top of his game. Never at a match without his beautiful wife Maureen, played by Rachel McAdams (The Notebook) and even more gorgeous daughter Leila Hope, played by newcomer Oona Laurence (Orange Is the New Black).

Oona really sets the benchmark for child actors here and on almost three occasions had me in an ‘I have dust in my eye’ phase. Leila is not allowed to go to the fights and see her Dad being beaten to a pulp. She is always looked after at her home by the Nanny and awaits her parents return after every win. Sitting up in her bed when he returns with Mum and gently counting the scars on his face. It is a moment that resonates through the rest of the film. It also makes what happens next harder to watch.

I never give too much away in my reviews, suffice to say as the next fight night is over and Billy and Maureen are ready to leave for home, a brutal accident sends everything into meltdown. We see Billy and Co hit the very dark rock bottom. The fight to get back up again and defeat his new Rival Escobar played by the rather frightening Miguel Gomez (Tv’s The Strain) is an incredible one.

At its very core this movie is a redemption film and at its very, very best it is heartbreaking and a tear jerker, but in a great way. A way I never saw coming for a film marketed on being a generic Boxing Flick! A massive nod to the always amazing Forest Whitaker who plays a boxing couch Tick Wills. Even Curtis (50 Cent) Jackson has another crack at acting and quite frankly in this film he fits perfectly into his role.

It is easy to say that this has been done many times before and in some people's eyes it may have been done better. In my eye's this is closest film to which is have felt a part of the entire run. Rather than having some long, overdrawn concept and waiting for the inevitable final fight.

Director Antoine Fuqua (Training Day & The Equalizer directs here and it is safe to say he just keeps getting better every single movie he anchors.
It really feels like something massive is just around the corner for Antoine very soon. Something ground breaking that will truly set him
apart as one of the best Directors of this generation. This film makes it feel that one step closer. Ever so close. Quite frankly I hope we see him and Jake at the Oscars this year for both their outstanding efforts.

As was the same in The Equalizer, Antoine's close up shots and
Utilization of the overly used slow motion effect, really feels fresh here. The same effects and camera work tricks are being used on most of the incredible Choreography here when it comes to the brutality of the fights. We owe almost all of that to Terry Clabon the fight trainer and choreographer for the movie. Jake really went all out for the role and got ridiculously ripped for the part as seen in the pics below.
The haunting score by the Late James Horner is breathtaking and really does make you feel every stare, every tear and every turn. This movie is actually Dedicated to James and I thought that was fantastic.
The film is also written by Kurt Sutter (Sons Of Anarchy Creator) and you can see it as Antoine seems to really bring all the script to screen wonderfully.

There is some bad with all the good however and it may just be a few little details. But the way in which the brutal first act plays out and is never really spoken about again. Such a massive part of the film and it is over looked so easily. It does not really make any sense. I was waiting most of the film for an answer to which I never received. Thankfully the rest of the film and the Oscar worthy acting make up for it.
I have to leave you with a few more words. Ditch whatever you want to go and see right now and check this film out. It not only deserves your hard earned cash, but also the recognition it punches for and this Punches Hard!!

Great cast, predictable story but well acted, great camera work. All in all rather enjoyable, there is no need for every new movie to reinvent the whole genre. It's an old fashioned sports drama.

Of course the end of the movie is completely predictable but the way to glory is built through the hero's personal hell. I give credit to the movie for trying to be existentialist although after all it's about boxing. First of all, I love the underlining themes of this film. Yes, this film is a boxing film but it’s one of those films where you have to watch it to get the deeper meaning behind it. Billy has to change from when we first see him at the beginning of the film to the last time. Which is another reason why I love this film is the character development in this film. Billy doesn’t stay the same from beginning to end. No, he has to change in order to get his life back together and you see that not just instantly but over the period of the film. I also really liked the pacing in this film. None of the scenes felt rushed or slowed down at any point. They all felt like the speed it should be going at for a movie like this. But I can’t say the same about the transitions in this film. Some of them were awkward and took away from the emotion in that scene. The acting in this film was spectacular as well. Which ties in well with the emotion because all the actors and actresses easily showed the proper emotion that was supposed to be seen at that moment. When a character was upset or angry you could easily see it in their facial expression and body language. But obviously I knew Jake Gyllenhaal was going to be good in this film but somebody who shocked me was Oona Laurence, who plays Leila Hope. She acted way beyond somebody her age and she could easily steal the scene from any of the adults and I hope she has a great career in the future. In the end, this film isn’t just a boxing film but a movie about how you have to lose once in a while to change and grow as a person.… Expand

Its clear to see how tired and yet determined Billy is, with his wife being clearly genuinely worried for his health. Ok so its all been done before as far as films about boxers is concerned you could say and you'd be right but I felt the performances were believable and thus convincing enough for this not to matter as much as it potentially could have. There was a definite feeling of hopelessness present - I found myself feeling quite emotionally attached to both Billy, his wife Maureen and his daughter, Leila.

This film is quite moving and thought provoking - it seemed a bit better than your, perhaps 'regular'/run of the mill style sports dramas. However, there is an element of cheese and sentimentality that comes through, although I suppose thats to be expected given the genres involved but I would reassure you by saying that its not entirely overbearing.

There is a great cast present in this film, from Jake Gyllenhaal as Billy (a headstrong, determined yet also clearly flawed in some respects, boxer, husband and father) to Rachel McAdams, as the concerned wife, wanting whats best for her family, Forest Whitaker who plays Tick Wills (a boxing manager) and even the hip-hop superstar 50 Cent, aka Curtis Jackson, who plays Jordan Mains, who works alongside Billy. Oona Laurence plays Billys daughter, Leila and she gave a pretty captivating performance with one particular scene standing out in my mind.

Tone wise, its tense and gripping from relatively early on and certainly within the first half hour (it has a running time of one hour and 58 minutes, for the record). I thought it was quite atmospheric and engrossing thanks, in part, to the regular changes of camera angles giving more of an immersive feel to it, providing I suppose slightly different perspectives on events both in and out of the ring. It also features a satisfyingly tense and haunting, mostly instrumental style, soundtrack.

Content wise, this film contains strong language and some moderate violence (quite bloody at times, understandably so given the plot) plus some partial nudity, although nothing especially graphic or extreme. For instance, men shown boxing in the ring are topless, as would be expected pretty much. The film carries a 15 rating to reflect this.

Yes I'd recommend this film as I felt it was quite gripping, engrossing and featured good, quality performances. It is a somewhat moving, emotional film, although it isn't exactly entirely original, as far as the plot is concerned and it could be seen as a little bit cheesy, which may put people off but overall its a pretty decent film, so I'd recommend it as such.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Southpaw takes an interesting perspective on Billy Hope, a lightweight boxing champion, living his dreams a good family, lots of money and a beautiful wife.
Billy isn't exactly a great father, his wife doing most of the parenting, when Billy's wife is tragically murdered, Billy must learn how to cope with the loss but also learn how to be a father.
All in all a good film, would recommend seeing if you're a fan of Jake Gyllenhaal and boxing. Pretty good Drama.… Expand

I've seen countless of these sports stories already. Southpaw has just enough heart and energy to win the round. With a lesser director and a lesser star, the storyline of Southpaw would have possibly made a Lifetime channel product.
