Southbound doesn't look that horrifying to me, but it has a lot to go to get to the top of counter chain. As long these guys know what they're doing next time, consider them to remake this.

This movie has some good parts, the way the stories connect is very interesting and the "Twilight Zone" feel to it is refreshing, but it doesn't have many other good points to offer.
It does have some unnerving bits but the overall construction makes it seem slow and longer than it actually is.
A lot of parts that are not explained and the lack of a "scary" element in some tales, makes the movie not "good", but not bad either.
I would say the best tale is "Accident", and "Jailbreak" the least pleasing one.
It's worth the watch if you are interested in more of a cryptic horror, and religious themes.

The first segment is also the last in a way, the so-called wraparound. It's directed by the group Radio Silence, who had one of the better segments in the original V/H/S but whose Devil's Due was a trainwreck. Unfortunately this segment is closer to the latter. There are some creatures seeking payment, "looking to collect" as one character puts it. These creatures inspire dread at first, but are quickly shown way too much and their CGI feel detracts overall. On the other end is a basic home invasion part that lasts way too long until the reveal of how it ties together.

The second segment, "Siren", is an interesting oddity until you realize it has nowhere to go and nothing to say. It sets you up with a subplot about grief and some genuine unease (and great chemistry between the leads) but then it just goes casually and boringly stupid. The best part about it is the transition to the next segment.

The third segment, "The Accident", is quite good and probably the best of the bunch. It's about a guy trying to save a woman's life after hitting her with his car. The only person he can "find", is the 911 operator on his phone. He goes through a creepy abandoned hospital and performs surgery all while listening to the laughing delight of more and more listeners on the other end of his phone. It's a weird one and transfixing.

The fourth segment, "Jailbreak", is also quite good. It's probably the trippiest of the bunch. It's about a guy who is trying to save his long missing sister from a parallel dimension he doesn't begin to understand--and that she doesn't want to leave. There isn't much else to this one, just unease and a brooding efficiency leading to a final scene you probably saw coming.

The neverending tale(s)!

Five tales, written and directed by four directors. It was a horror anthology that takes place in just one day and night. Firstly, this film was not bad as it looks. Each tale and its interlocking with one another was very nicely done. The layers are not arranged in a column or a row or a circle. It was just like what you see on the poster, a star. Especially one character from each tale, how they become a victim in another was the highlight. The genre mixing was so good, I mean it was not out and out a horror. Mystery, thriller, crime, all was put together and presented smartly on the screen, particularly the loop was very fascinating.

I have seen some similar kind, but this one was slightly different from those and a better one in some way. Not all the tales were awesome, though there's nothing wrong with them. For every 15 minutes, it keeps developing without giving rest to us and events in the film. So it was a non-stop entertainment, particularly if you like horror, thriller. If you pay close attention, you could find more hidden meanings or messages. So this film can be watched once, but not everyone going to enjoy it. Especially if you are okay with B movie, then there's nothing stops you.
