As a viewer/pothead who caught this one at sundance and has been waiting to see it again (to see if I can remember it a little better next time when I haven't eaten "special" brownies before hand) I recommend this feature highly. It was As a viewer/pothead who caught this one at sundance and has been waiting to see it again (to see if I can remember it a little better next time when I haven't eaten "special" brownies before hand) I recommend this feature highly. It was an interesting twist when the movie started and I thought I was projecting the experience I was having onto the film. From the bit I can recall (a big bit, actually) it was hilarious and dead on for the modern day LA pothead. 4.20 thumbs up (out of a possible 4.20). Expand

So dumb funny its smart, Smiley Face makes fun of the stoner within while reveling in the stupidness. I laughed out loud so many times and thought "oh that's cleverly relevant to the marijuana culture." Anna Faris is great as always, So dumb funny its smart, Smiley Face makes fun of the stoner within while reveling in the stupidness. I laughed out loud so many times and thought "oh that's cleverly relevant to the marijuana culture." Anna Faris is great as always, playing a character totally unrelateable yet recognizable in our culture and our friends. If you didn't like this movie its because you take your weed way too seriously or you don't get it at all. Expand

But where those movies traded in darkness, Smiley Face is a light-hearted, stoner-romp for the liberal arts graduate. Any movie that has Anna Faris breakdown the difference between Reaganomics and strict Capitalism to a dreadlocked pot-dealer Adam Brody...well., if that doesn't sound at least intriguing to you, skip the flick. This movie was made for those of us at the end of our marijuana stages - you know - when you think you should NOT be smoking marijuana at all. And when you still do it, decide to write a review because of your "increased self-creativity!!! (thanks Jane / Ana Faris). When Jane is having fun while she's high, she is so fun to watch. You get the sensation that she is actually high - in only the way females can be - and it's awesome. When she gets down though, she gets very down, with hallucinations that Satan is behind her car. I'm glad the movie hooked me with its portrayal of pot humor as ridiculousness. That allows people in all walks of their personal 'marijuana stages' to enjoy this movie. I'm most glad that the movie took the time to remind you that even sweet, harmless pot can send you to the curb if you test it too much or too often. I'm mostest glad that the movie is funny. Expand

I thought this movie would be trash, but it's surprisingly good. I don't like stupid stoner movies, I don't like teen comedys or any of that garbage. I hated Harold and Kumar or whatever. Clever approach to comedy..... Some of the other reviews remind me of music reviews by people complaining that, "Radiohead sucks compared to Phil Collins."

Anybody who saw Anna Faris spoof Cameron Diaz in Sofia Coppola's "Lost in Translation" knew that the "Scary Movie"-franchise girl deserved her own comic showcase to let her freak-flag fly. "Smiley Face", an absurdist journey of a thoroughly baked Cali girl, will do. Unlike other motion pictures about potheads, this filmmaker made a shrewd move that sets "Smiley Face" apart from the "classic" Cheech and Chong movies of the late-seventies, or the more recent "How High". Jane is smart. She majored in economics. Early in the film, she explains to her dealer(Adam Brody) how Reaganomics and the concept of trickle-down economics aren't applicable to his pot business. Since we're aware of Jane's intelligence(she graduated summa; that's the top one percent of any particular class), this stoner flick becomes more than some innocuous knee-slapper about being high. "Smiley Face" is a tragicomic portrait of a young woman who wasted her potential. Even though "Smiley Face" has every requisite moment that you'd expect in this highly-specialized genre(the paranoia, the munchies, the quasi-profound nuggets of philosophy), all played for broad laughs, mind you; the film doesn't see drugs, even a "soft" drug like marijuana, as a laughing matter. Case and point: In a sausage-production factory, Jane gives a rabble-rousing speech about laborizing the work force that is both passionate and articulate, or at least she thinks she does. In actuality, Jane's manifesto is a series of starts and stops, digressions, and incoherent mutterings. Faris is laugh-out loud funny. Above all else, "Smiley Face" is a comedy first. But this druggie farce is a subversive one; unintentionally conservative in its ideology. Nancy Reagan was right. Just say no. Expand
