The glory of the past through movies such as Goldfinger, Live and Let Die, Goldeneye and even the more recent Casino Royale has seen the transformation of Bond for better and at times for much worse. Quantum of Solace was unfortunately a disappointment however Skyfall comes back with an element of class ans slow pace that the more modern Bond films lack. Javier Bardem is a villain that all others should aspire to be. His bizarre suave nature allows him to be more forthright and almost liked but his vendetta that lays dormant underneath the surface comes through as the film progresses. Not a perfect film, at times the pace is too slow and the stunts outlandish and ridiculous. The acting is as you would expect superb but the climax of the film and build up to the inevitable death of Judie Dench left a little to be desired but the gritty nature that Craig brings to the franchise holds strong throughout. A brilliant notion towards more classic Bond on the horizon.… Expand

Operation Skyfall is certainly one of the more different films in the series. Even having links with other films in the series that completes fifty years, which reigns here are references to movies most hallowed of cinema. Or, so to speak, of films that challenge more pipeline, which ultimately generate more intimate links to the protagonist and transcendence. Although problems with linearity, which in this case are surprisingly linked to Silva villain (played by Oscar winner Javier Bardem for No Country Where The Time), and thus who really holds the film as a whole is Daniel Craig. Although forceful action scenes, is quite correct to say that the film earns exactly the weaknesses that James Bond and exposes the direction of Sam Mendes that makes it all look perfect. In all, Operation Skyfall does not surpass the perfect Casino Royale, but is undoubtedly among the best in the series.… Expand

It strayed away from the story line of the previous two films and I couldn't have been happier after the mediocrity of Quantum of Solace. This film has all the constituents from the Bond films that have preceded it. Big explosions, ridiculous stunts that not a single person in the history of humanity can survive, and let's not forget to mention the beautiful women that would make both genders stop and stare. I came out of Skyfall excited to tell people about it. A great movie on every level. I loved the nod to past bond history and the modern edge to the plot. I liked every bit of the movie except the main plot ending...it doesn't fit with the grandeur of things a well acted evil villain with almost unlimited resources and firepower fail to kill one hardly protected person for revenge...?? M should have been killed earlier in the movie with many other innocent people, and with the intelligence agency crippled, and london under the threat, 007 refers back to the old methods with Q assistance and then the real motives starts to emerge... none the less a good 007 movie, but Daniel Craig's "Casino Royale" is still his best mark.… Expand

With action packed in every shot, the ending comes to a shocking end, but still takes the top 3. This movie, being the great one it is, stands up to even Goldfinger. Sean Connery and Daniel Craig face each other with there best movie pick. Connery's top as Goldfinger, Craig's top as.... well obviously Skyfall. This is a necessity for every Bond fan. Daniel Craig is at his best. Until this film, I didn't think Goldfinger could ever be matched. Don't listen to the people below or above who say it is a waste of time and money. And I don't mean to get offensive, but a lot of people who think it sucked are people who grew up back in Connery and Moore years and can't like newer versions of many old movies. There are many adults who love the movie too though. My dad for instance is a very good critic on Bond movies. Usually he likes the older ones the best. But he says that now that he saw Skyfall, he can't decide between Connery or Craig. Note: Movie is not for people who hate getting headaches because of thinking over Connery or Craig.… Expand

Important to say, that there's probably no better action movie neither that the movie where James Bond comes in! Definitely, Daniel Craig's performance as an actor, even if he didn't modified, he surely saved the character from rusting. I really enjoyed the movie, but I've never seen a Bond movie before this one. Perhaps it may not live up to the Bond name, as people are saying, I would not know, but I do know that regardless, it's fantastic watch and incredibly entertaining.

I´ve never been into James Bond films. Action movies are too often bad and they are not my favorite type of film. But this is what a great action movie is and feels like. Cinematography is stunning and deserves the oscar nomination it got (we´ll see if they win it). There are lots of cool things about the film like the storyline being centered on Judi Dench´s character. Daniel Craig is probably the best actor to bring James Bond to life. Nothing new. But the highlight is Javier Bardem playing the villain. Just amazing. He is so good, damn. My favorite scene of the whole film is the one in which his character is introduced and shares the scene with Daniel Craig. So much tension. 2012 has been a great year for movies and it shows in 2013 oscar nominations but if they have gotten one thing wrong is the best supporting actor category, two of those actors should be replaced by Javier Bardem in Skyfall and Leonardo Dicaprio in Django
It felt original and another good point is Adele´s song, one of the best of the franchise

I have to admit I was somewhat disappointed when I saw this movie in theatres. But that's partially due to the fact that I had to pee really, really badly, had impossibly high expectations set up, and was worried the whole time that my bestI have to admit I was somewhat disappointed when I saw this movie in theatres. (They did.) But once I saw the movie outside of theatres I was glad to see that I really liked it. It's definitely a very stylish, and extremely well shot movie, but it's also really character driven, especially for a James Bond movie. It has a lot more depth than you would expect. The acting is really good too. Javier Barden (I think that's how you spell it, maybe not) was extremely creepy, not only because of his deformity, but because you weren't quite sure if he... Never mind. That creeps me out just thinking about it, yet alone writing it. Craig probably gives his best performance as Bond so far also. This helps the characters feel very real. The action is well directed and can be fun, but it's not quite as gritty or as common an occurrence as it was in Casino Royale, but that being said, I believe Skyfall to be the better movie overall, and possibly the best Bond movie ever. Mendez definitely took directional inspiration from Nolan, perhaps too much at times, but I like the darker more realistic style that Craig's Bond movies have compared to their ridiculously over the top predecessors. Glad this movie won Oscars. Here's to hoping the next movie is even better, actually reaches my near impossible expectations, and maybe even gets a best picture nomination.… Expand

With Casino Royale being, in my opinion, one of the best Bond films of all time, and Quantum of Solace being one of the worst I felt like a lot was riding on this one, and boy, did it deliver.The third James Bond film starring Daniel Craig. Whilst I don't think it was as good as Casino Royale it is still a very good and is up there with the best Bond films. My only critiques would be that the villain didn't hold as much presence as previous Bond villains, he didn't really care about destroying the world more about a revenge. Also, towards the end I got the feeling that it felt more like a Christopher Nolan Batman film than a James Bond film. But in conclusion, it was a very well done film and I think it's safe to say that Daniel Craig has earned his place as James Bond.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As you all know, 2012 marks the 50th year of the James Bond series and Skyfall is the 23rd movie in the entire franchise. What I have to say is that Skyfall is an outstanding movie but I will get all the details down but this review will contain spoilers so if you haven't seen the movie, DO NOT read this review, you have been warned.

Skyfall begins with Bond fighting an agent working for a terrorist in Istanbul and then being shot by a female sniper and then drowns in water which makes MI6 claim that Bond is dead but when MI6 is under attack, Bond returns to MI6 to stop the villan. Daniel Craig has done an amazing job with his performance as James Bond as well as Javier Bardem as the antagonist Silva. Both Mr.Craig and Mr.Bardem have both executed their scenes perfectly. Also, the movie does have a lot of awesome and memorable moments such as Bond and his co-worker Eve played by Naomie Harris in Istanbul, Bond in China and the ending. Another great thing about the movie is Judi Dench as M. Her performance was truly memorable that some Bond Fans would want to go back and see. The only problem with this movie is that the movie has some boring scenes like the part where Bond has to redo his training. My final verdict is a 9/10. This is a must see for James Bond fans or if you are someone who wants to see a good movie.… Expand

Honestly, I think Javier Bardem and Judi Dench should've won awards for their roles. The cinematography is some of the best I've ever seen in any movie. The long, subtle shots showed me that an action movie doesn't always need quick, rough shots. And even with all those excellent qualities, the moment in the movie that astounded me the most was the villain's entrance on the island. I had never seen a shot like that and it nearly took my breath away. Bardem was as charming and menacing as ever and the story he tells is spooky as hell. Do not miss this movie. Bond turned 50 in 2012 and he didn’t age a day since he first made his debut in 1962’s Dr. No. Skyfall, now the 23rd Bond film in the series is Daniel Craig’s third outing as the character and he delivers his most emotionally riveting performance as Bond yet. Set after the events of Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace, Skyfall presents a Bond who is clearly off his game and is suffering from some form of post-traumatic stress syndrome. Bond’s personal dilemmas need to set aside as he is confronted by a psychotic killer hell bent on destroying MI6, the British secret intelligence service. Not only does this psychopath possess and invaluable list of names that could cause the death of hundreds of British agents, but that same person shares a past with a very notable character in the series and is intent on making life a living hell for Bond and his morally conflicted mentor, M. Craig shares the screen with the always amazing Judi Dench, who returns as Bond’s boss M, Naomie Harris, a fellow agent with a very unique name, Ben Whishaw, as the wonderfully sarcastic new gadget master Q, and Ralph Fiennes as a British agent who, of course, is more than he appears to be. One of the most important parts to any Bond film is the villain. The previous Craig films have always suffered when it comes to a memorable megalomaniac, but there is no denying that Javier Bardem’s performance as Silva, a deranged cyber-terrorist with a vicious grudge, is one of the most memorable Bond villains since Goldeneye’s 006, Alec Trevelyan. The performances are all top notch, but the action scenes are what sets this movie a part from most films this year. A breathtaking motorcycle chase across rooftops in Istanbul turns into one of the craziest fights on a train that you'll ever see, and that’s barely the first ten minutes of the film. Quite a few action scenes pay homage to those found in prior Bond outings, while still making them unique at the same time. Mendes grounds the action, allowing it to be thrilling without veering into brain numbing absurdity. Skyfall has plenty of other goodies for fans too. Cinematographer Roger Deakins’ work is gorgeous as he perfectly captures the beauty of Istanbul, Shanghai and other cities around the world. His visual flair enriches everything from the action scenes to the quiet conversations between characters. The always famous opening credit sequence adds yet another great song to list. The song, simply called Skyfall, was written and performed by Adele. Adele’s work is easily one of the best Bond themes ever. The film will please 007 fanatics as well as newcomers who are unfamiliar with the super-spy’s globetrotting escapades. Craig portrays Bond in a way we have not previously seen; he presents Bond as a broken man that's lost his edge forget the suave, handsome, perfect man that most of us believe Bond to be and picture a washed up, bearded, borderline alcoholic, a man who is merely a hollow shell of what he once was. That's what makes Craig so appealing, he plays Bond with a sense of realism and vulnerability. The villain of this movie is wonderfully portrayed by Javier Bardem (known for his portrayal of Anton Chigurh in No Country For Old Men); a man who relies more on his brain than physical strength, a man betrayed by his own people and on a personal vendetta against the woman who betrayed him. He's a believable villain, bearing many similar traits to the villain of Die Hard 4. Bardem plays the part with a great deal of charm; although he has a small amount of screen time he makes the most of every scene he is in and was undeservedly snubbed for an Supporting Actor Academy Award.

Sam Mendes has made a perfect Bond that is realistic but also pays tribute to the Bond films of the past. Mendes, unlike his Bond director predecessors, develops the background characters giving them depth and emotion; M now serves a purpose in this movie and is portrayed by Judi Dench as a woman afraid of letting her country down and losing her pride. Q is introduced in this movie as a considerably younger man, he's a computer genius with a poor sense of humour who despite his intelligence is still outsmarted by the villain. Apart from developing the characters, Mendes also utilises some brilliant cinematography; the fight between Bond and the assassin is reminiscent of the fight in Moonraker and the villain is introduced with a 30 second static camera that doesn't move instead the villain walks towards the camera until we can discern his appearance.

The music for this film is conducted by Thomas Newman who does a brilliant job supplying background music for scenes. However my one real criticism of the film is the opening song; Skyfall by Adele. I dislike the fact that she was hired, not because I have a personal dislike of her music, but because the producers aimed to release a commercially successful song that would win the Academy Award. The song is easily one of the worst in the history of Bond movies and should have been replaced with a song that reflects the tone of the movie.

Apart from that criticism this is easily one of the best Bond films ever made, its a return to form after the disappointment of Quantum of Solace, and Daniel Craig will be the greatest Bond ever. Roll on Bond 24.… Expand

I have been a long-time fan of the Bond series, and I was blown away with this film. That said, I am still not completely sold on this current oh so serious incarnation, which strives to be oh so dark and murky and au courant, unlike the Bonds of yesteryear, which were a lot more cheeky and comical and fun. Now that I got that out of the way…
This film opens up explosively. From the first action scene to the beautiful opening credit sequence you have already gotten your moneys worth. bond #23 is easily the “best looking” one to date. I’m not only talking effects here, I mean lightning and camera work. The use of colour really goes a step forward here, setting the mood perfectly even when locale jumps from one another. Not only that, but for an action film, it knows how to slow down and become even a bit artsy. Let me explain.
There is a scene in which Bond is chasing “someone”, lets call him, “wood be assassin.” This “wood be assassin” is on a mission of his own. Instead of going in guns blazing, he decides to be very stealthy. While doing so they enter a room beautifully illuminated with blue light; zero sound was used in this scene as well, making it ten times as thrilling, and this is only one example, there are plenty more.
When Bond meets his enemy for the first time (played by Javier Bardem) The scene also lacks any score of any kind, but to good effect. Instead you hear only two things, Javier’s long menacing metaphor, and the echoing sounds of his footsteps.
Besides these little details, Skyfall has great performances by Daniel Craig and especially Judi Dench. These two are the highlights of this movie, and by that I mean this story focuses heavily on their relationship and the many details about MI6. This story is easily the strongest one from an emotional standpoint.
If I have any gripes, one would be the length. I know it’s a Bond film and there are many story details to fit in, and I am a man who can respect slow paced films as long as they benefit the story and or serve a purpose to the suspense/mood of a film. But a few points in the middle of here I found myself wanting the film to progress a bit faster.
However,
Skyfall is nothing less than an achievement, not just for action films, but for bond films in general. It is as much of a progression as Casino Royale was. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My favorite 007 till now has been Sean Connery. But in second position I definitely consider Daniel Craig.
Casino Royale left great impact but Quantum of solace dissapointed.
Now its skyfall. And its actually a rise again.
Daniel Craig lived the character of James bond.
Also, this bond is realistic.
The script is good.
Action less but amazing.
Especially the beginning is outstanding.
Background score is academy worthy and so it was rewarded.
Adele sung the score beautifully.
The villain is quite satisfying.
All in all, Bond returned with a bang emotionally, and with full charm.

Really good for a mind-numbing thrill film, but not the best Bond screenplay. Having watched 25 Bonds from Dr.No to Spectre, I place Skyfall at 4/25.

Now to be clear, I'm rating it as 4th as a Bond movie, because I have certain expectations from a Bond movie, which Skyfall did not really want/try to satisfy. If I rate Skyfall simply as a "movie", it is the best movie in all of James Bond. It's simply the greatest movie they made.
The emotional weight, the characters difficult decisions, the visuals, the direction, the music (Adele!), the action, everything is just brilliant. They even brought back some of the old style Bond madness, not necessarily its best parts, but it was still a lot of fun to see.

Skyfall is simply an excellent, emotionally striking movie, with so many gorgeous scenes and moments it needs to be seen.

The only reasons it's not a 10/10 are:
- the movie starts with a lengthy sequence that ultimately brings nothing to the plot (and lasts 25 whole minutes)
- the villain isn't as great as some say, I found him good rather than great
- the classic Bond silliness does come and is great, but it also comes around and is just silly, especially the ending battle where really, there's no reason at all for it to happen this way

These minor points shouldn't push anyone away from watching Skyfall, which may not be the greatest "Bond movie" but is the greatest movie the Bond franchise ever produced. Sam Mendes and Richard Deakins at directing and photography particularly deserve a special mention, but Judi Dench, Daniel Craig, Naomie Harris, all deserve mentions too. Skyfall is simply a top tier movie. If I could give it 9.5/10, I would.… Expand

Having never watched any of the Bond movies, I enjoyed this movie very much. I liked Bond's character arch, going from a lost man to a man who finally finds himself and his destiny. It's not a kind- hearted movie which you would smile when you think about it later ( such as Amelie, Boyhood, ...) but still It's an astonishing achievement. I've literally never seen another Bond movie, so I can't make any comparisons. So, as a stand-alone action film (not part of a vast legacy), I'd say it's a very good movie. In fact, Skyfall was actually the first 007 movie I saw. For those experienced with James Bond, the unconventionality of Skyfall is its best feature. Scenes feature fascinating visuals while we scratch our heads trying to uncover the plot. For example, Skyfall depicts a night scene in Shanghai at one point. Bond fights an assassin with beautiful jellyfish graphics floating in the background. As the two brawl, we have no idea who is who because of their nearly identical silhouettes. A handful of other interesting artistic subtleties such as this appear later. This is actually fairly typical of a Bond movie, but seems to be particularly well-done in this one. Skyfall's other strong points include the villain and Bond's critical relationship with M. Prepare to be both shaken and stirred!… Expand

'Skyfall' is a real character driven film and delving into Bond's past is very exciting and gives the action more meaning. The cinematography is just excellent as are all the returned cast and new members (especially Q) whilst on top of that is that fact that the action is mind blowing. But what really sets this film apart is still it's charactisation.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: Silva's plan is very confusing to say the least...

Don't expect hints in Adele's beauty of a title song. Even Javier Bardem's dangerously thrilling baddie, Silva, has real-world issues. Ben Whishaw is wily fun as a young Q with his own take on gadgets. And Judi Dench, magisterial and magnificent as M, Bond's boss, lets go with the emotional heat she withheld in the Pierce Brosnan films. Bond cries. You might, too. This time it really is personal.

Sam Mendes (American Beauty), the first Oscar winner to direct a 007, teams with cinematographer Roger Deakins (No Country for Old Men) to create images so gorgeous you'll want to lick the screen. The stunts are aces (check that train shootout in Istanbul that renders 007 unfit for duty), the mission intriguing (find a hard drive containing a list of NATO agents infiltrating global terrorist groups), the acting beyond the call of 007 duty (props to Ralph Fiennes, Naomie Harris and Albert Finney as characters too juicy to reveal).

But what makes Skyfall top off as Bond at his best is the way Mendes and screenwriters Neal Purvis, Robert Wade and John Logan use England itself – past, present and uncertain future – to remind us where Bond has been and where he's going. Turning Britain’s royal octogenarian into a Bond girl was a stroke of cross-marketing genius that profited queen and country both, while also encapsulating the appeal of the 007 brand in the age of aerial drones.

It’s the human factor, to borrow somewhat perversely a phrase from Graham Greene, who worked for Britain’s foreign intelligence agency MI6. In his novel “The Human Factor,” about a double agent, Greene sought, he said, to portray the British secret service unromantically, with “men going daily to their office to earn their pensions.” Bond is wearing a silver-gray suit when he powers into “Skyfall,” the latest 007 escapade, but it isn’t cut for office work. The suit is seductively tight, for starters, and moves like a second skin when Daniel Craig in his third stint as Bond races through an atavistic opener that — with bullets buzzing and M (Judi Dench) whispering orders in his ear — puts him back on mortal, yet recognizably Bondian, ground.

And just in time too, given that he looked as if he were on the Bataan Death March in his last film, “Quantum of Solace.” Directed by a surprisingly well-equipped Sam Mendes, “Skyfall” is, in every way, a superior follow-up to “Casino Royale,” the 2006 reboot that introduced Mr. Craig as Bond. “Skyfall” even plays like something of a franchise rethink, partly because it brings in new faces and implies that Bond, like Jason Bourne, needed to be reborn. The tone is again playful and the stakes feel serious if not punishingly so. This is a Bond who, after vaulting into a moving train car, pauses to adjust a shirt cuff, a gesture that eases the scene’s momentum without putting the brakes on it.

That “Skyfall” includes a sequence on a train — a passenger one, no less — suggests that this may be very much like your granddaddy’s Bond, even without the bikinied backdrop. From the initial sequence, one of those characteristic supersize set pieces that precede the opening credits, Mr. Mendes shows that he’s having his fun with 007. The opening doesn’t just take place in Turkey, one of those putatively exotic locales adorned with woven carpets and dark-complexioned extras, it also includes smoothly choreographed mayhem in both a crowded bazaar and outdoor market. There, amid these familiar action-cinema signposts, Bond and another agency operative, the suitably named Eve (Naomie Harris), chase down a baddie as locals and oranges scatter.

Bondologists may linger over that Turkey location. Globe tripping has always been as crucial to the movies as groovy gadgets: it’s an elegant way to map the geopolitical coordinates while providing armchair adventure for the rest of us. Here, though, you have to wonder if Mr. Mendes and the writers Neal Purvis, Robert Wade and John Logan have folded some 007 arcana into the mix. Turkey plays a major role in the second, often most critically celebrated Bond film, “From Russia With Love,” which, like this one, includes a lethal fight on a train, a formidable blond male adversary and an island headquarters. But whether the filmmakers want to intimate that this is the rightful follow-up to the rebooted Bond is less interesting than this type of longitudinal thinking the movies inspire.

Mr. Mendes, a British film and theater director whose dubious screen achievements include embalming the American dream in “Revolutionary Road,” gets Bond just right in a story that first turns on a domestic threat and then on a personal one. Mr. Mendes grasps the spy’s existential center, as typified by the ritualistic mano a mano grappling that almost every action movie now deploys to signal that, when push comes to punch, the hero can still kill with his bare hands. There’s brutal death here, but there’s also a pervading sense of mortality that makes the falling bodies register a little longer than they sometimes do in a Bond movie. As a director of films like “American Beauty” and “Away We Go” Mr. Mendes has indulged in a noxious blend of self-seriousness and condescension. There’s none of that here.

Instead he honors the contract that the Bond series made with its fans long ago and delivers the customary chases, pretty women and silky villainy along with the little and big bangs. Whether Mr. Mendes is deploying an explosion or a delectable detail, he retains a crucially human scale and intimacy, largely by foregrounding the performers. To that end, while “Skyfall” takes off with shock-and-awe blockbuster dazzle, it’s opulent rather than outlandish and insistently, progressively low-key, despite an Orientalist fantasy with dragons and dragon ladies.… Expand

Six years ago in Casino Royale, Daniel Craig's first outing as Bond, we learned that 007 owes his perpetual bachelor status to the loss of true love Eva Green. Skyfall, Craig's third Bond film, again aims to flesh out the backstory of the spy, with the globe-trotting terrorist hunt this time literally revisiting the site of the childhood trauma that apparently pushed Bond to seek out that license to kill through which he has funneled a love of country bordering on psychosis. Also unearthed: the deep-seated parental issues that have caused him to cling to MI6 adviser M (Judi Dench).

This time around, the signature, spectacular pre-credits chase sequence atop a moving train ends with Bond in the crosshairs of a fellow agent played by Naomie Harris. (Despite the euphemism-heavy workplace seduction that develops with Bond, her character's throwback-punchline name isn't revealed until the final scenes.) She shoots and misses; the bad guy she aimed to kill escapes carrying a digital drive holding the names of dozens of undercover NATO agents, while Bond falls off a bridge and goes missing. Back in London, M works on Bond's obituary while the spy himself takes advantage of his presumed death to cash in some R&R on a tropical island, catching up on his drinking and **** Then MI6 headquarters is bombed, a simultaneous cyber attack reveals that the stolen drive has fallen into the worst hands possible, and Bond reports for duty, toting a piece of shrapnel/evidence in his pec that gives MI6 a head start on smoking out the enemy.

Bopping from Shanghai to Macao, Bond gets up to the usual daring escapes and zipless nightcaps, but the peak of the movie is his tête-à-tête confrontation with Silva (Javier Bardem), a former disciple of M turned killer hacker who, we learn, went rogue after bad **** went down during the Hong Kong handover. A catty dandy whose own evil owes to grievous PTSD, Silva taunts Bond about the "unresolved childhood trauma" that turned him into 007 material. In Skyfall, even the Bond villain is obsessively determinist.

The greatest gift director Sam Mendes—working with cinematographer Roger Deakins—brings to the material is staging and imagery that artfully amplify the film's ideas about the world in which all of this is happening. And there are ideas, despite the fetishism and improbability native to the franchise. Bond's world is undeniably modeled after a real one engaged in debates about transparency and obfuscation, in which established institutions find themselves crippled (and, perhaps worse, rendered foolish) by stateless entities who show their power through violent interruptions of both the physical and virtual worlds. A bureaucrat played by Ralph Fiennes, trying to drag MI6 kicking and screaming into the age of Anonymous, contends that the agency "can't keep working in the shadows—there are no shadows." It's a POV contested by the film's most visually stunning action scene, a relatively simple duel in a darkened Shanghai skyscraper, with Bond and the bad guy silhouetted against the neon lights and building-enveloping video billboards outside. The shadows might have changed shape, location, and method of generation, but the conflicts seem to be as binary as they've ever been.

Skyfall's most pressing project is to prove that Bond, a thoroughly 20th-century invention, can function in the new media landscape, on-screen and off. From the undisguised camp of the Silva/Bond confrontation to the nods to past 007 films and rhetoric endorsing "the old methods," the freshest thing about Skyfall is its embrace of its own old-fashioned values. It's a movie in which the villain's secret weapon is a server farm, in which the high-tech gizmos proffered by the new, hipster Q (Ben Whishaw) are quickly discarded for old-school tools. In the body of 43-year-old, visibly graying Craig, Bond's advancing age is played as both an obstacle to surmount and a virtue. Between the action sequences, the pleasure lies in observing impeccably dressed Brits exchanging barbed witticisms—making it, basically, Downton Abbey with cyber crime and shower sex.

But as much as it's open about its paranoia of the new, Skyfall's fatal misstep is its slavish hewing to event-movie trends. Like this summer's Spider-Man, Batman, and Avengers movies, Skyfall seems to exist primarily to set up the events of subsequent films. At nearly two and a half hours long, it's the September issue of Bond movies, bloated with story to fill out the spaces between product placements, with much of that story lardy psychological exposition.… Expand

Marking the 50th anniversary of the characters cinematic debut, Skyfall takes on a much more contemplative approach to it’s story by examining the question of what place does a character like Bond have in the modern era. It’s a question that was brought up before in Goldeneye but personally, I feel this movie’s execution of that theme was much more satisfying.

From the great opening motor bike chase on the rooftops of Istanbul followed by the visually arresting title sequence, I knew sitting in the theater that I was in for something special.

Everything about this movie was lighting captured in a bottle. It’s by far the most gorgeous-looking of the Bond films, there is sincere thematic depth, and the acting is spot on with Judi Dench giving her best performance as M.

Javier Bardem’s turn as the devious Raoul Silva is literally one of the best villains in cinematic history.

Not much more to say except….it is the crowning jewel that perfectly encapsulates everything I love about this franchise.… Expand

Mendes is the game changer. He sees what a rich character like such deserves. And creating an ugly yet polished world, offering a palpable environment for Bond to survive, Sam Mendes, the director keeps the job, a job. Despite of being the most personal and emotionally driven content, the mano-y-mano perspective let's you fill in on their shoes giving you the up close 3d experience with three dimensional characters which none of these hokum comic books extravaganza can give. This is also probably the first complete script of James Bond, in the sense that the linearity is easily followed and synced with crisp relevant action.

The Bond girl Berenice Marlohe leaves a resonant message in her brief appearance, also since this is the only Bond girl with almost no flirt talk, her fear makes her hand and voice shake and the film takes a steady U turn. This is where we catch up with Javier Bardem, who is celebrated with no care in the world by the writers, where you can see them bending the rules and even the script to make sure, he comes off as a magnetic righteous leader.

And if he is poised in every step of his plan, M, played by Judi Dench, makes him rubble every time, he encounters her and this cat and mouse chase is spiced with a love track that you not only don't see it coming, but also practically go wolfish to have some more. And amidst all the new recruits to the old employees striking horn for some noble agenda, Daniel Craig, gets overshadowed which too is foliated nicely by Mendes making him the empathetic character, just like Ryan Gosling in Blade Runner 2049 or even Clint Eastwood in Dirty Harry to some degree. Daniel Craig was excellent, giving life to a mature agent, unable to field missions under normal conditions, despite his perseverance and willpower. And if Judi Dench showed, in other films, that she is a tough and demanding boss, she showed now as she was also careful with her agents and her work. It's interesting and moving to see the way that she and Bond gradually collaborated, despite his arrogance and her criticism. Ben Whishaw surprised in the role of Q, giving his character a breath of fresh air and a much more realistic approach, appropriate to the age of technology. The villain, however, exceeded expectations. Bardem surpassed himself, and all he had shown in previous works. He could truly give life to his spiteful, vindictive and almost effeminate character. From here, the sky is the limit for this actor and the doors are open for any project he chooses. Interestingly, this is one of the few Bond movies where bond-girls lose their usual relevance, but it wasn't negative. By seeing the movie we will not miss them. The opening sequence is, in my opinion, very impressive and one of the best in all the franchise. It's accompanied by the song "Skyfall", composed and sung by Adele, one of the best British singers of today. With this song, she got an Oscar and one of her biggest hits to date.… Expand

Skyfall remonta en calidad tras la (personalmente) mediocre Quantum of Solace. Si bien no llega al esplendor de la primera entrega de esta última saga de Craig, retoma el buen rumbo que la franquicia debe llevar en los tiempos actuales.

Dirección, guión y fotografía ejemplares así como un trío protagonista (Craig, Bardem y Dench) que se comen la pantalla en cada minuto que aparecen. Como apunte, destacar los sensacionales créditos iniciales cubiertos por la cantante Adele. Simplemente maravillosos.

I thought this movie was visually stunning, although its not exactly perfect it certainly looked very appealing and I don't mean just in terms of eye candy (lol). There are various landscape shots of London and other countries which are quiteI thought this movie was visually stunning, although its not exactly perfect it certainly looked very appealing and I don't mean just in terms of eye candy (lol). There are various landscape shots of London and other countries which are quite stunning and there are many quite slick camera angles used which help make this really quite an engrossing movie. Given its running time of just over or around the two hour and twenty minute mark, its quite a feat to keep viewers entertained and intrigued throughout, without getting bored and fidgety but I found that I had my eyes glued to the screen for certainly the majority of the time, which, for me, is good going lol.

As I say, I found it to be very atmospheric, particularly with the asian casino scenes and in scenes by the asian waterfront (strong colours used, high intense colours seem to be something Sony are into judging by their latest camera advert - its clear Sony make or heavily fund the picture given the numerous product placements for Sony items seen throughout, such as various Vaio laptops - I've noticed this in previous Bond movies) and also notedly during the long battle scenes in Scotland, where the color was drained down to a mere grey/blue. Plus of course it wouldn't be a Bond movie without the long, artsy animated or cartoon-esque opening titles, which are quite psychodelic and have a spooky theme which relates to what we witness at the end of the first scene. I wouldn't say it came across as especially low budget, though it is a bit 'tales of the unexpected'-esque but if you've seen previous Bond movies then you likely know what to expect (which is a bit of a pun, I suppose(!)).

As is expected from a James Bond film, it features some pretty slick dialogue, some funny and some poignant and also various good fight scenes (gun and hand on hand, I believe). I had a very quick glance at reviews of the movie before I left to see it and I thought I'd read that there weren't much in the way of car chase scenes but that turned out to not be the case - ok maybe in terms of conventional car chase scenes there aren't many but at the start there's a long scene which involves chasing a suspect including different forms of public transport (I'm trying not to give away too much information in the way of spoilers). I think this is how most Bond movies start? but it was quite gripping and my concerns about this movie lacking possibly some of the better elements of previous Bond movies seemed to fade away. Having said that, as I eluded to earlier I wouldn't say this is a perfect movie in terms of the Bond franchise - for me the downsides include a bit of predictability in terms of locations and character types (which ok perhaps we're expected to take as a given and some things I do expect to see and would be sad if I didn't but one or two token scenes such as parts of the world and types of people involved, just seemed a bit too obvious, a little old hat? I don't know, maybe im a little harsh but I remember thinking that and I don't always criticise movies much, so having thought of it I wanted to add it to my review). The other negative for me, I felt, were a couple of plot developments I found especially hard to believe - don't get me wrong, I know that these movies aren't meant to be taken too seriously (what agent could possibly not have aged much and still be on active duty some 40 or 50 years after the first movie came out, apart from anything else?) but I felt it was perhaps a bit like the Bourne movie(s) in one or two parts where I could feel myself thinking that seems very unlikely - its hard to explain more without potentially spoiling the story, so I'll leave that there but ultimately this is a movie to thrill and entertain and as far as that goes, it does its job pretty well. Also in its defense, as well as some parts being a little especially unbelievable, its also true to say that the good guys don't all come off unscathed (like in some American movies you sometimes see and think if that were real, they'd have never walked away from there - they wish(!)).

Also if I were to compare it to the previous Bond films starring Daniel Craig, I think its better than Casino Royale, which seemed to slump for me mid way through if I remember right, this one kept my attention more and seemed a bit more solid, its probably roughly on a par with Casino Royale, although all Bond films feature there own quirks and other peoples opinions may differ on this but thats my thought anyway.


This is definitely worth seeing on the big screen ie at a cinema, like I did. Some films can't fully be done justice (as it were) by watching it on a large TV say 32" or so, I think alot of the appeal of this movie, the fact it managed to keep me engrossed and seemed visually stunning, was definitely aided by being shown on a large cinema screen.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Skyfall is one of the best bond films yet. There’s not shortage of great chase scenes and shootouts. I know lots of people have problems with Silva’s escape, but I thought it was exciting and never failed to disappoint. Then that leads to the court room shootout which is just a brilliant scene. I personally love how this film goes further into M’s past and doesn’t just focus on Bond. The whole entire theme about old vs new worked and was great. Seeing bond actually losing a step in the first act was great. Then of course there’s the great third act where it takes Bond and M to Skyfall. I love all of it, except the fact the M and Kincade left there stupid lamp on. I personally think this was a phenomenal movie and would most definitely recommend it.… Expand

What a great film. Javier Bardem is the greatest villain in the Daniel Craig (he's great as always) era. The absence of a relevant traditional "Bond girl" is countered by an amazing Judi Dench. Roger Deakins ir so good.

Bond's relationship with M is what truly makes this film move forward, and the film took a big risk by killing off M, and it worked. The villain, Silva, is another example of a great villain who can be intimidating without being physically threatening. The film strays away from spy and more into generic action in the last third, but besides that, the action scenes and presentation make for a truly spectacular film, one that arguably surpasses the greatness of Casino Royale.… Expand

Emotionally driven and beautifully shot. Skyfall is definitely in the top 5 best Bond Movies of all time. Not to mention the finale in the Skyfall estate and the relationship between Bond and M, insane story-writing.

The characters are really well fleshed out, the action is practical and really well shot, as is the entire film (Roger Deakins my goodness), and a riveting story about Bond getting old and still trying to make a living as an agent in the field. I think Skyfall is peak sexy and badass Daniel Craig and my god he is glorious as Bond in this film. Judi Dench's M, Ben Whishaw's Q, Naomie Harris' Moneypenny, Ralph Fiennes' Malory, and the absolute standout Javier Bardem as the deliriously depraved Silva are all interesting when they are on screen. This is a shoutout to a brilliant script by Neal Purvis, Robert Wade, John Logan who penned a masterful character study for all of these characters all interwoven into the central plot. The opening Istanbul setpiece is one of the best openings in an action film you can really ask for. The Tennyson sequence is cinematic masterpiece and Thomas Newman's score in this sequence in particular is nothing short of exemplary. The plot about Bond getting old, him really not wanting to admit it but still being such a raw, manly MI6 agent is really what makes this Bond so attractive. Quite the anomaly considering the time it came out was all about sell-out movies like Pacific Rim and even its prequel, Quantum of Solace (which is definitely a dud), but the tone of the movie was able to encapsulate an intense mood so foreign to Western media that watching it is definitely like breathing in fresh, musky, rainy English air after seeing it's sequels (which, like Quantum of Solace, miss the mark). The stand-out roles aren't even Daniel Craig (although he is great), but the supporting cast like Judi Dench, Javier Bardem and Ben Wishaw that make the movie so alive and gripping. 10/10 Can't see James Bond ever returning to such a high-point, when every good thing a future 007 film could do was done here.… Expand
