A very well set horror movie. certainly one of the best video game to movie transitions done ever. an interesting story and really, how much character development or drama do you expect in a horror movie anyway?

The movie feels like a very extended cut scene but a pretty one at it. The photography is awesome and very much remniscant of how all games look - eerie. The movie would probably have been better in its original state - without any male leads - focusing on the mindstate that is Silent Hill instead of switching back and forth between "real" and "unreal". Very decent videogame adaption though that doesn't deserve as much negative criticism as it has been receiving. Expand

Speaking as a massive fan of the games. Awsome. Some people might not like this as there isn't much in the way of definitive plot and it is uncomprimisingly loud.

The guy who said it shows it's videogames roots throughout, is jaded and has never played the game and experienced what the movie can almost convey...A since of dread, and evill all around you.If these critics were less biased to the gaming world maybe they would take into account the atmosphere and style of the movie. This wasn't made to establish a new genre of movie but, to please fans of the game..I'm sure it has pleased the majority of us. As a fan of the games, I felt the story held very true to the franchise which is very reliant on atmosphere and a somewhat convoluted story. As fans, we generally like and appreciate this, but this is also why I think most of the movie critics don't like it. Bottom line, the first half was fantastic and spooky as hell (literally), the second half was a bit convoluted and heavy on the somewhat confusing dialogue, but still very good. If you're a fan of horror movies and especially if you're a fan of the game franchise, you will not be disappointed. Expand

I was looking forward to see First Off I would like to start by saying that i have never played any of the Silent Hill Games. Having Said That. I did however Have an idea of what the games were about. what they look like and what they are. I was looking forward to see this adaptation because of the little that i knew And i was not that dissapointed. The mood of the movie was done right. with the white - grayinsh ashy atmosphere of the town to the dark-orange and squirmish atmosphere after the sun sets. This things of course taken from what i have seen from screen shots of the games. Now, I am asucker for scores. and for a while this movie delivered on the tone of the score at the beginning of the film . but then the score felt a tad over used. i felt like i was listening to the same track over and over. Until the films climax. as everything in the screen turned gory and yet a bit gothic. so did the score. and i loved every moment of it. The story was good. But at the end of the flick I felt It did not give me enough closure. but i can let go of such a small thing. The acting on the other hand could have used a bit of work. Radha Mitchell was good in this. I have been a fan of hers since i saw Pitch Black(even though I hate that movie) And Sean "006" Bean was good but a little wasted in this part. They should have given him more to do in this flick. And the girl was just not that great of a child actor. Was she the best one out of hundreads? And Laurie Holden. Did she have to play the female cop male like? However this are small but liveable complaints And I do recomend the movie for anyone looking for something different. Atmosphere wise. And a small note... We need to see more of Piramid Head. He can take on Pin Head anyday and mop the floor with him. Go see it for the look and sound of it. But dont expect oscar quality when it comes to the acting. Now I got to go and see if i can find a copy of Silent Hill for the Playstation ONE!! Expand

I have all the silent hill games and beat them all 13 or more times. the movie needed more horror where after the school she encounters the living darkness again in the hotel then again in the hospital, and i was hoping that rose weilded weapons like the pipe and bashed the monsters around with it. the speacial effects in the movie matched that of the game and was right on the money yet i noticed a lot of things that needed lots of improvement. Overall i enjoyed it still and do hope for a next one just more horror(screww the plot)( most of the SH games were a bit confusing to understand, the horror kept us entertained) non stop living darkness and horrible monstors. And definitely more Pyramid head popping out of every corner as in SH2!!! Its just the movie failed to define itself as a true horror movie. Expand

The movie felt like an extension of the games, and in my case that was what made it so good. For someone who is not into the games I can imagine how they would not appreciate the story and how it is told. I mostly enjoyed it but felf that some of the violence was too extreme at the end. The movie also could have followed the games more and left Silent Hill as a mystery rather than explaining it explicitly. Expand

Seeing as most movie critics have likely never played through any of the games (Perhaps 10 minutes or so, to prevent people saying they've never played the games) I didn't go into the cinema with any preconceptions or hopes, as most videogame remakes have been either spectacularly poor or ridiculously stupid. Nevertheless, the Silent Hill franchise has always seemed like promising subject matter for a film in my opinion. I wasn't wrong. [***SPOILERS***] The film starts off very quickly, but I feel that more work could have been done to establish the characters for those who haven't played the games. Regardless, the introduction is always going to be the part of the movie which is going to be disregarded, as we all know where the meaty part is going to be: Silent Hill. On reaching the damned town, the atmosphere is very faithful to the games; including the thick, constricting fog which makes the viewer feel incredibly claustrophobic. The 'scary parts' where the darkness ensues, and the monsters come out to play, is very well done. Although there is no shock factor in particular, the segments are genuinely disturbing in keeping with the games. The special effects are professionally done, and don't look fake like some have done in previous game remakes. However, I feel that much more could have been done with Silent Hill. Of the whole time period of the film, only around 30% of the film was scary. The vast majority of the film was rather misguided in my opinion, and it tries to draw the storyline along with the audience kicking and screaming. The ending segment in the church and hospital was very drawn out, and I feel that it nullified the good work that the film does in creating a disturbing and paranoid atmosphere. The large majority of viewers are likely to have played the games, so I think that the huge amount of time devoted to conveying the storyline is slightly unwise. I would go as far to say that this isn't so much a horror film as it is a thriller with elements of horror thrown in. Nevertheless, the areas where the creatures of Silent Hill threaten Rose (Radha Mitchell) are very impressive, albeit extremely disturbing at times. However, towards the end of the film, I feel that too much effort is made to shock the viewer (My mind flashes to the segment outside the church with Pyramid Head), and that the director was trying to make up for lost time by cramming as much senseless gore into the last 20 minutes or so as possible. The acting was passable, although nothing special. Laurie Holden (The cop) was overused, and I feel that the film would have benefitted from isolating Rose much more; which would increase the feeling of loneliness and paranoia ten-fold. So essentially, Silent Hill is definitely recommended for fans of the film; but if you haven't played a substantial portion of one of the games, you will go away feeling either incredibly confused or very angry. Thankfully, the ending leaves the path open for a sequel; with Sean Bean likely to walk the hellish road to Silent Hill. Having seen his performance in this film, I think he could put in a better performance than his female counterpart. Expand

The previews didn't look all that spectacular, so i nwaied until video. After watching it, the movie exceeded my expewctations and I was very pleased with the way they turned the game into a movie. I don't know how some who claim to have played the game didn't think it was true to the story; they must have skipped through the cut scenes. It wasn't *exactly* like the story-line, but then there were 4 different storylines- a different one for each game. However, the game is a game, with just a bit of story-line to keep the game interesting. In a movie, story-lines *should* become the forefront, and that is what the creators did, so they added a bit more background to make more of a story. If you actually listened to what was being said and took in the visuals, you would understand the story-line. I had no problem. Some people might have missed that janitor in the bathroom... Its kind of important. Expand

I watched Silent Hill for the first time yesterday on DVD and I perfectly understood the storyline (I mean c'mon they take 10 minutes out of the movie to literally tell you what happened!), so anybody who tells you that the story makes no sense probably think that 'Bio Dome' or 'Resident Evil' have true depth to it. This movie sets a nice atomosphere and uses suprisingly little CGI in its monster and set designs, only using CGI for visual touch ups (like it should be used for). The storyline and acting was good, a few parts being the exception. [***SPOILERS***] The very ending of the movie is debateable though, it seems kind of like a cop-out ending. Very possibly the best videogame movie of all time, not that this is much of an accolade. The creature designs are horrifying and elaborate. Unfortunately the plot is so confusing that only fans of the game series will truly understand this film. It's great for its own fans, but is sure to leave newcomers with questions they will be unable to answer. The deeply symbolic nature of the film, embedded in setting and creature designs, always relevant to the plot progression, will likely be overlooked by those who can't get over a few vague details. The sound design is absolutely flawless, and easily deserves Oscar recognition (though it would never get any), and the cinematography and atmospheric techniques are fantastic. Easily the best video game adaptation film next to Mortal Kombat, Silent Hill is surprisingly not bad at all. At least it doesn't cop out for cheap surprise thrills that any amateur filmmaker could place in any "scary" movie. Silent Hill has a genuinely frightening atmosphere and spooky sound design that are worth admission alone. Don't go in thinking it's going to be well-written or deep or any of that. This movie is ten times deeper than the afforementioned without even trying, and the only reason I'm comparing the two is to show how much money talks when talking about critics reviews. All the critics got pissed off when Sony wouldn't allow any pre-screenings, and that made them think that is was going to be bad from the get-go. Their preconceived notions ruined the movie for them. This is an atmospherically terrifying movie. CONS - Spotty acting (in some of the minor characters). Most people need to do further research in order to understand the plot fully, but I do not think it's incomprehensible by any means to anyone who hasn't played the game, because, I have not. Oh, and the end is very gory. That could be a pro or a con depending on who you're talking to. Expand

Of course if the movie where based on a book the things will change, but... it's not that case. Aside from that the movie stayed just like the game is, it stayed with the storyline from the game, it didn't wander off to random stupid parts. The Best videogame adaptation yet by far, but may confuse people that haven't played the game. The story was a great version of the videogame version (with hints of a future sequel based on the second game starring Sean Bean I think). The monsters were incredibly creepy as were the sound effects. The locations were mirror images of the videogame sets. Pyramid Head has an absolutely brutal kill and the finale is haunting. Some parts were too much like playing the game though, like her searching of random locked drawers and suddenly she has a flashlight! Or the oh I found something in a dead person's mouth so I guess that is where I need to go next. I really wish videogame adaptation could just focus on adapting the story rather than thinking they have to provide the audience with videogame like scenerios and action. Expand

This should give it a little more draw this week so long as the positive reviews overweigh all the negative (looking good so far). It's too bad our voice doesn't count towards the overall Meta-Critic Score. - At the very least, catch a matinee of this movie, and don't go in expecting an awesome horrer movie, but this movie is above par and breathes a lot of atmosphere. Visually outstanding, creepy and gory. Yes, some acting wasn't top notch, but this is a horror movie after all. However, Laurie Holden's "Cybil" was great, in a sexy baton-wielding lady-cop way. Don't listen to a word they have to say about silent hill because it's the best movie I've seen this year. Christophe Gans has done some of the best directing I've ever seen by adding such a thick schmearing of surrealism that it's hard to see how critics got so confused when everything is explained within the movie. From what I can tell most of the bad reviews from this movie seem to attack the poor writing, perhaps representing some enemies that Roger Avery has made over the years, but the writing itself is far better than I've seen with critically acclaimed movies like Cache which tend to ignore it's function as an entertainment medium and insted look to have their backs rubbed by art-house fans and critics. The one thing I have noticed on here is that all those rating this a 0 to 3 keep saying "It's not like the game", or "that wasn't in the game", or "I've never played the game and didn't understand it". Big news: It's a MOVIE, not the game!! While it does pay a nice homage to the series (which I have had the privilage of playing on PS, PS2, and Xbox) it does try to make the attempt to stand alone as well. If every movie like this stuck to the strictest sence of it's source, why would you bother to go to the damn movie when you already know the whole story people? If that was the case Spider-man would have been really boring, X-men would just be another re-hash of a known tale, and Peter Jackson's King Kong would just be a colorized remake with a Fay Wray look-alike. The point is we go to be entertained with new ideas and images, not to see the same things over and over again. Overall, it was a good bit of escapeism and I did enjoy the visuals. Plot was a little contrived and thin at points but very forgivable. A good shot a popular game. I just wish the teenage rabid fanboys would back off and see it for what it really is: a really fun movie that helps you forget reality for a few minutes. 'Nuff said! Expand

The movies that make you think about the story, aren't neccessarily bad ones. In the game, the story had to be put together as you played on. If I ever had a chance to meet the director i would probably run up to him and give him a very big hug followed by at least four decent slaps across the face. I love the video games and believe that they are the best survival horror games If I ever had a chance to meet the director i would probably run up to him and give him a very big hug followed by at least four decent slaps across the face. I love the video games and believe that they are the best survival horror games out there. With an intense atmosphere and an artistic design that can only be described as grotesquely beautiful, silent hill is a video game franchise that separated itself from other horror games like resident evil and fatal frame by giving us deep characters and a mysterious/intense storyline combined with unimaginable monsters in a living nightmare that disturbes and frightens all players that experience it even today. The director did his job in bringing these aspects to the big screen which made this the best and most accurate video game to movie transition so far. The only thing that didn't appear in the theater was what made the game so wonderful, the very plot. This is when I violently slap the director silly while screaming, "Why o why did you not keep the storyline?" You were going so good, then it went downhill, and in the end I was slightly disappointed. There are many reasons why the plot was changed I believe: copyrights, length of the picture, Rose can't shoot a gun to defeat the final boss and Cybil was already extra crispy (another big mistake that angers me so). But I understand and forgive the director for the plot. The story was very close to the origional, and I have to be grateful for that considering that we could have ended up with another resident evil, that only resembled the game through a virus, an evil corporation, and a lot of shot zombies. In the end real fans of the video game should appreciate and like the movie because of the many details and moments found in the movie that brought silent hill to life, but also wish the main plot ( the birth of a god of a religious cult through the body of an innocent child) was kept intact so that people new to the series can see why we love silent hill so much. Overall, the critics raped this movie like a two dollar whore because they were expecting an oscar masterpiece. It's a movie based on a video game. Don't complain that it's like watching a video game when the movie, believe it or not, is actually based on a video game! In my opinion if it's like watching a video game than thank you mr. director sir you really did your job. In all, if your a fan you will like or even love the movie. If not you might be confused, disgusted and bored while watching the show. Either way I enjoyed it and so did others. Not to mention how funny it was that Silent Hill was number 1 at the box office, but only because, in regards to American Dreams and the Sentinel, American Idol is getting as repetative and old as Michael Douglas' career. "souless and joyless") or bizaarely attempt to connect any element of this movie to reality. this is a horrible escapism of hate, of evil that isnt dignified enough to make sense to anyone. these are creatures of a child's hateful nightmare that dont need any motivation except to be not just viscerally frightening, but instinctively repulsive. it's horrifying not especially for the gore, but for the violence coming from creations so crude and senseless and... alien to our (or should i say my) sensibilities. "pyramid head" sounds like a completely ridiculous name, but the being itself is exhilaratingly demonic. i believed they were surprisingly sucessful in tapping that primal, reflexive fear of being left completely alone in a confusing and hellish place. also their ability for suspense went criminally undernoticed here. there was genuine dread when those sirens went of as a series of escalating horrors happened after each time it did. these people did not have weapons of any sort (except a knife, which was dropped, and a gun that soon proved useless). horror movies have their own aesthetic, and i suppose this one just went with how i think they should be done, because it's been a few YEARS since i was scared that badly. The fact that almost no CGI effects were used is doubly impressive. Having played Silent Hill 2,3 and 4 I really appreciated how close to the games the film was (considering KONAMI wouldn't let Mr.Gans use the story from the games). Unlike most horror films the setting wasn't piled to the rafters with weapons for the characters to run around bashing monsters with (which is very refreshing). Also Silent Hill did not rely on "cheap" scares such as having scary faces pop up screeching like banshees. The intereaction between characters seemed natural and very true to life (or as close as it could be considering the situation) which made it easy, nay enjoyable to watch (unlike so many horror films today). It was good to hear and see the music and creatures from the games, they made the whole experience that much more. And finally it wasn't too long like a lot of movies these days (I'm talking to you Peter Jackson!) ending at two hours and five minutes, just as there was no more plot to be divulged and no more sinners to be clensed. I don't understand why professional critics are rating this movie so low. Movie versions of videogames are difficult to do, but Silent Hill did a good job of it. Good pacing, incredible special effects, good acting, a nice new take on the original story... I was solidly entertained. Fans of the games will notice and appreciate many things. Expand

The nightmarish aspect of silent hill puts up and above any other horror movie I've watched, and the ending though confusing was a nice touch.

One the most intense enthralling films iv seen .. very surprised by the critics reviews, it shows that they haven't played or have any interest in the original subject matter that is the silent hill games.

I think its fair to say that this movie wasn't made that well. it has plenty of directorial and acting flaws but you know what? its fun. its an enjoyable movie to watch for fans of both horror movies in general and fans of the game I think its fair to say that this movie wasn't made that well. it has plenty of directorial and acting flaws but you know what? its fun. its an enjoyable movie to watch for fans of both horror movies in general and fans of the game particularly. Like many have said, the atmosphere is great. A lot of its shots are done quite well. Expand

I don't know why people rate this movie very low. Silent Hill basically gave almost all its story away by the end, where there was an explanation going on. Either they didn

Beautifully done. It captures the scary, glued to your seat, heart pounding desperation that the game is. Awesome job.

For the fans, Silent Hill is better than anyone had any right to hope it would be. From the music, to the sets, to the characters, to the creatures - everything smacks of a distinct respect for the source material. From the music, to the sets, to the characters, to the creatures - everything smacks of a distinct respect for the source material. If, however, you are coming to the film from the point of having no prior knowledge then things get a little more complex and not so satisfactory: acting is patchy, script can be very weak in places and the lengthy exposition at a certain point is completely insulting. However, having said that - and this next point can't be stressed enough - if you enjoy films where the visuals are the main star (think Suspiria) then this is a complete masterclass in set design, creature effects, atmosphere, cinematography, the whole lot. The confidence displayed within really does conjure up some completely iconic images. Overall, it's a bold, confident, patchy effort that will divide those who see it. The best video game adaptation yet? Easily. Expand

Tomb raider was a mess, resident evil was a disater on all means nad lets not think about the rest! Anyway Silent Hill is one of those sick, twised, generally creepy films that grabs you, and refuses to let go. Its sick horrifying, grotesque images of Hell, do more than just scare, they kick the breaths clean out, its that scary. Some scenes ar taken straight out of the game and this just makes th whole thing more satisfying. I can agree that th story was very confusing, and left not much of an impression, but the whole film proves just how goos game adaptations could be. It has all the right elements in a horror pic, but instead of following the predictible elements that a BAD movie would do it creates all new rules. Never has a horror been so intense than this. Silent Hill is a joy to watch and think that only Fans will truly appeciate the direction of the film. It ends just like the games do, confusing and downright weird, but thats the beauty of this film, it doesnt stick to the coventional methods. Christopher Gans has succeeded, and the reviews form all critics are wrong, and if any of them had actually played any of the games they would know how to take to this movie. Its the best horror of this year and probably the best movie of 2006 too. Any Fans MUST see this film! Expand

Not knowing what is going on and why is one of the most enjoyable things about the games.
