All she did was complain and make trouble and delay the main story arc. Josh Brolin had no depth either he plays the typical "I'm cool as **** CIA operative. The action in the movie was boring because we really didn't care about. The 3 points I give it were for a couple cool scenes and Benecio del Toro thats it.… Expand

This is an expertly crafted movie from the top down but not a perfect one in terms of pacing. There are sections in the movie that drag. Sicario was a superb film that i heavily enjoyed from start to finish. Emily Blunt smashes her role as a morally conscience FBI agent with a need to hunt down the bad guys. The films overall tone is gritty and dark, highlighting the harshSicario was a superb film that i heavily enjoyed from start to finish. Emily Blunt smashes her role as a morally conscience FBI agent with a need to hunt down the bad guys. The films overall tone is gritty and dark, highlighting the harsh reality of the violence and horror that occurs in the modern world of America as well as parts of Mexico. Benicio Del Toro nails it as a mysterious and deadly antagonist and this really shines in his scenes with Blunt, conveying an underling light vs dark and good vs evil theme. Sicario's cinematography is brilliant. The film is definitely one of the best looking of 2015 with vibrant and colorful backdrops, juxtaposing heavily with the dark scenes transpiring in the foreground. Josh Brolin and Daniel Kaluuya also are strong supporting actors, both providing the film with a heightened sense of urgency as well as a balanced level of comic relief which doesn't take away from the films overarching narrative. Sicario is a well written story, however the film does fall short in some scenes with slow moving plot points and a handful of unnecessary scenes. Nonetheless, Sicario deserves praise for a gripping story, stellar and intense action pieces, strong performances in most characters as well as a chilling finish which will leave viewers on the edge of their seats.… Expand

They in factWhen in the opening sequence a house gets raided by a FBI led Swat team they do not find the kidnapped victim they were looking for, but instead they discover dozens of corpses tucked away in the walls. Who are the dead? They in fact already know, but an investigation gets underway nevertheless..
But then something odd happens. In most movies the tension will ease as the investigation picks up and the imminent danger has disappeared because the site is secured by the police.. Instead the tension is kept up with eerie music, a steady drone in the background. And one can feel something is coming, but what, when and how?

And it does.

The movie is tense, not through action scenes and fights, but precisely because of this sense unease. Of digging for water, but finding bloody mud. Of wanting to save someone, but finding scores of mutilated decaying bodies instead. When Blunt, a talented but inexperienced FBI agent who gets recruited by the shadowy Brolin for a job that is all but clear, is part of the team that has to transport a crime boss from Mexico to the US, they pass a group of mutilated bodies hanging from lamp poles. And the transport is guarded by a lot of Mexican jeeps equipped with machine guns. Thus indicating that the Mexican police has no longer authority in some parts, but just the bigger violence to ward against the gangs that would otherwise dare to attack them. There is no law beyond the gun: there is anarchy.

The movie reminds me of a Michel Mann movie in the way it was shot and of No country for old men in the mood of the story. And the music is very well used to set that mood. The acting is just great by everyone involved eith Del Toro taking the biggest share of the credit. A very well written tense movie that is certainly recommended was it not for Blunt.

And there you have the main flaw of this movie. In fact it was such a big issue that, given I use a simple scoring system, I have considered it to be a meh movie and award it a 5..

It isn't Blunt herself, but the role she has to play. This role is so far from the role she plays in Edge of Tomorrow, but also from the role she is supposed to play. This is the role of the sheriff from the No Country for old men. She is passive in this movie. She gets dragged along by Brolin who tells her they go to El Paso but instead they go to Mexico. When a team is about to enter a tunnel she clearly hears that the soldiers, for that is what they are, are weapons free. In other words: can open fire whenever they want. And soon enough she figures out, no wait, she is told that she is now part of a CIA operation that has probably no legal backing except for her signing some paper that everything went by the book while it is clear that Del Toro is probably not much more than a criminal himself.

And so goes the rest of the movie. Blunt's character just gawks, moans and even gets sick but does nothing about it, even when Del Toro at some point shoots her. She is like an old man who is defeated and exhausted and gives up the fight. And thus Blunt just goes through the movie with one expression on her face: a continuous frown. And it just doesn't fit well. I cannot believe that a young promising FBI agent will already have given up, but perhaps I am a fool.

At the end Del Toro tells her what to do: run of to a nice little town, girly. For the wolves have come.

I bet she does.… Expand

Seriously - Emily Blunt is totally superfluous to the story as is her sidekick. Not only is the presence of this jarring duo unnecessary, but Emily's presence amongst the Delta soldiers and other tough guys comes off as forced and weak. The 'tough female protagonist' angle they were aiming for falls absolutely flat and ends up looking quite absurd.

Ultimately what could have been a serviceable action thriller is undermined by silly casting probably done for 'diversity' reasons - Hollywood insists on pushing this unrealistic feminist/social justice narrative which sees Emily blunt look like a fish out of water and her black guy buddy totally useless and superfluous. If you are going to cast a tough female... at least give her character some flesh to go with the bones and some contextual reason in the plot for actually being there.

It got quite amusing in the end - tense action sequences followed by numerous scenes of Emily Blunt smoking. Action (in which Emily is pretty much a passenger). Emily Smoking. Emily needs a new bra (that's in the film). Action. Emily smoking.

Meh.… Expand

Their is a basic plot however the characters were relatable and the audience can feel emotionally attached. When I saw this film, I walked out of the theatre thinking, God, I want to be Benicia del toro. Although what his character eventually does (kill the wife and kids of a drug lord), we can still see the human in him. I remember in the suspenseful scene where the drug lord's family is killed by del Toros character, the audience in the theatre in fact cheered, because it was so emotionally well handled and justified. The cinematography was great, swift, cinematic, intense, the directing was beautiful, acting was great and writing strong (though plot was a bit weak).I loved this film and I believe it is seriously underrated… Expand

Despite the home's proximity to a barren desert the killers have apparently decided to stack the bodies in the middle of a suburban subdivision...only it only becomes more unrealistic from this point on..… Expand

Villenueve is an incredible director. With an astonishing opening that’s gritty and visceral, and bringing incredible foreshadowing with the motes of dust you can see why people are pumped about this film.

The gore is brief but effective. The violence is covered and not made to excite, but is extremely effective. Denis shows how insignificant a good person can be in a male dominated world full of deceit and wrong doing. He shows we run in a cycle, and if you change something for the ‘better’, things always end up worse. In a way he shows chaos theory.
Emily Blunt is a great character but it is Benicio Del Toro who is the biggest star of this, and in one scene with him towards the end of the film he had 75% of the audience in my cinema gasp.
An incredible film, although personally I’d say I enjoyed Prisoners a tad more.

Sicario…..ultimately falls between two stools ….and succumbs Big Time to the lure of a certain cinematic grandstanding in which off-the-charts “machismo” - the film is marinated in it- totally wins the day and we enter a magical 007/CharlesSicario…..ultimately falls between two stools ….and succumbs Big Time to the lure of a certain cinematic grandstanding in which off-the-charts “machismo” - the film is marinated in it- totally wins the day and we enter a magical 007/Charles Bronson/Spaghetti Western Universe (think Clint Eastwood‘s The-Man-With-No-Name) where Adult Supervision has been left far behind (poor Emily Blunt gets saddled with the Adult Supervision stuff)……In a sense all this is really too bad because director Denis Villeneuve is an amazingly gifted film maker who can build suspense out of almost nothing and from having someone sneeze or make a cup of coffee using the wrong spoon....his use of music is truly phenomenal…..But sadly what held so much promise rapidly moves from art to something like Goofy Hyper-caffeinated Journalism……..We enter A MAN’S WORLD here folks where poor, bumbling Emily Blunt will be given no quarter because quite frankly, and there’s no nice way of saying this, she’s just a Dumb Girl ….

The final .007 half hour of the film disintegrates into something out of a “Twilight Zone” episode mixed with flashes from old “Zorro” movies, with Benicio del Toro shooting Bad Guys like they props in some extremely violent (some would say nifty) video game and even shooting the luckless Emily Blunt character at one point (“Don’t ever point a gun at me” he rebukes her caddishly after firing a couple of bullets into her)..…Do you get the picture ?….….clearly both script writer Taylor Sheridan and director Denis Villeneuve have opted to throw caution to the winds by this point....and the disquieting result is that the Benicio del Toro character is suddenly channeling for- that's right - good old Charles Bronson (and I`m talking The Real Deal Charles here: the Bronson of “Death Wish”, “Death Wish 2” and “Death Wish 3” …none of your candy-assed, squeamish liberal stuff !) …..and in the very next scene, by way of a Macho Man encore, del Toro threatens to blow silly `do-gooder` Emily Blunt`s brains out if she doesn’t put her John Hancock to that paper saying that all these carrying-on have been done strictly ``by the book”; "You’d be committing voluntary suicide” del Toro assures Blunt as he presses his revolver more firmly into her neck…..Emily weeps momentarily but happily opts to sign (getting shot once in a movie is enough for even your most hardened Do-Gooder ; there's no point pressing your luck !!...….Sadly the silliness of all this seems to have been lost on many of the critics who - like director Villeneuve- apparently still hanker for old-fashioned, hokey, macho man action yarns about REAL MEN living in a REAL MAN‘S WORLD…..Sorry kids...time to put your comic books away and grow up.… Expand

The opening scene sets the high standard and the rest of the movie has no problem keeping it that way. From my perspective, Blunt and her partner, were badly miscast, because in this film none of the macho male characters (CIA, DEA, Special Forces) would have allowed her to even be on the team. As one of them said to her at the end of the movie, "get at the end of the line, keep your finger off the trigger, and don't shoot any of my men [in the back]." If the role had been played by Jessica Chastain or A. Jolie, this film would have been a 10! See it anyway!… Expand

I saw this movie Oct 22 at United Artist Showcase 8 next to the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. So it had been out awhile. It was also on a huge screen. This movie is so beyond good it's unbelievable really. I won't go into any specifics but will just say the three main performances (Del Toro, Blunt, Brolin) are all definitely Oscar-caliber. This movie is intense. At the end, as the credits were rolling, I found myself just sitting there looking at the screen. Not moving. As I got up to leave, I noticed everyone else in the theater was doing the same thing. Just absorbing...processing what they had just experienced......… Expand

"Traffic"was a good movie (Metascore 86), but I like "Sicario" even better—director and composer instill a sense of menace and extreme jeopardy, suspense builds to great concluding scenes (will likely make my top 10 for 2015). Warning: Movie is bloody and occasionally gruesome—nothing truly over the top by today’s standards but just a tip to the more sensitive types.… Expand

Despite having plagued with somewhat indolent beginnings, Sicario is beautifully shot, edited, acted, written, and screams with a Hitchcockian dramatic tension that echoes through the entirety of the latter part of the film.

I have not seen a movie start out this good since The Dark Knight. I was at the edge of my seat for the first hour. Sicario revolves around an idealistic FBI agent enlisted by an elected government task force to aid in the escalating war against drugs at the border area between the U.S. and Mexico. I adore this movie I really do so I want to get my problems out of the way before I dive head first into all the goodies. My problem with the movie was simply the pacing. For the first half of the movie the movie drags and picks up in equal measure till a bar scene which just makes the movie flawless onward.

Firstly the writing was phenomenal! Taylor Sheridan demonstrated perfectly all the darkness brewing under the surface between drug cartels. He also showed that it takes both sides of the border to do these crimes.Thus demonstrating the evils of the U.S. and Mexico. Through this, it was made clear that the corruption and greed of the U.S. go hand and hand with the poverty and desperation of Mexico to the point of true unadulterated terror.

Next is The one, the only Dennis Villeneuve. With mastery of the material Villeneuve painted all the characters a shade of gray before revealing their true selves. He accomplished this through beautiful camera work and magnificent shots. With the help of living legend cinematographer, Roger Deakins this movie is a technical masterwork.

Just as great if not better was the acting. Emily Blunt offers some of her best work, giddily ridding the underbelly of drug busts with remarkable finesse. Her role demanded sheer brutal emotion and she more than delivered. Accompanying her, Josh Brolin does some of the best work he's done in years. Working as a bit of a comic relief and as a brutal wake up call to both U.S. and Mexican citizens alike. Heart wrenching and breaking these two fine actor's churn out the very best in each other.

By far the best supporting performance I've this year was offered by none other than Benicio Del Torro. His cool and understated performance is can only be compared to Javier Bardem in "No Country for Old Men." He was as menacing as he was sympathetic and all the audience and do is sit and watch in amazement and disgust as we slowly unravel this multidimensional character. Del Torro's performance can only be called bravura.

Sicario is a wonderfully dark and twisted, yet timely and poignant movie with a strong cast led by brilliant work by Del Torro. Sicario Gets an A or a 9/10.… Expand

Sicario was my most anticipated movie of 2015, just because of the director, the cast and the magnificent cinematographer Roger Deakins was involved in making this movie. Denis Villeneuve has been non-stop impressing me recently with movies like: Enemy and Prisoners, so I was really looking forward to seeing Sicario and boy let me tell you that Denis Villeneuve did it again, because Sicario is one of the most intense and shocking film I've seen this year. Denis Villenueve has more talent than anyone could ever dream of having. After Prisoners and Enemy, for him to manage top both of them so resoundingly with Sicario is impeccable. Sicario manages to cover the drug war and cartels as violently and as bleak as it should without being too violent or too bleak. Though, it still paints an incredibly grim picture of the situation and nobody winds up looking good in this situation. I should also mention that Roger Deakins is the best living cinematographer. His work on this film is magnificent. One of the best shots films I have honestly ever seen, this one follows up one beautifully shot scene with another beautifully shot scene and uses every technique in the book to the very peak of its potential. Emily Blunt is phenomenal here, but is actually outdone by Benicio del Toro. I love Del Toro's work, but this has to be his very best. He is out of this world in this role and hits a complete home run. Sicario is a fantastic film and one of the year's strongest works, but what do you expect when Villenueve, Deakins, Blunt, and Del Toro, work together?… Expand

So after liking Black Mass my bias for crime films continues further here, I really liked Sicario, it was well directed, acted and the cinematography was beautiful. At the heart of Sciario, the plot is quite simple, a talented FBI rookie-So after liking Black Mass my bias for crime films continues further here, I really liked Sicario, it was well directed, acted and the cinematography was beautiful. At the heart of Sciario, the plot is quite simple, a talented FBI rookie- Kate (Emily Blunt) gets called up to a higher up narcotics unit who claim that their fight makes a difference and if she wants to make a difference and start dealing with higher level cartel mafia they were the only unit which can help her out. The said unit led by Graver (Josh Borlin) has hired a special contractor Alejandro Gillick (Benecio Del Toro) of mysterious origins who is a smooth multilingual talker and a ruthless killer all rolled into one; basically James Bond without all the womanizing and silliness. Gillick and Graver take liberties during their missions and don't go about their business by the books in fact sometimes they seem bigger criminals than the drug cartel they fight against. Kate is an idealist and this disturbs her, but at the same time she also wants to make a difference, this theme is the meat and potatoes of the movie. I personally found this theme a lot more relatable than Denis Villeneuve's Prisoners' "I will fall to any depths for my child" theme because I am not a parent and but still old enough to realize that how many times I wish I could have done something which really mattered to the society I live in. Everyone's great here, Emily Blunt and Josh Brolin perform well but the man who is the spirit of this movie and it's namesake is the Sciario (meaning The Hit-man) himself- Benecio Del Toro, we find the Academy Award winner here in top form, I was reminded of the fact how physically imposing he was when he towered above Josh Brolin (who is a big guy himself); coupled with the fact he was so intimidating, this was a great casting choice and I hope to see a nomination for Del Toro in Best Supporting Actor category.

Some things I wish the film did better was if it dealt with the details, the nitty gritties which I enjoyed in Black Mass, what's the hierarchy of the cartel? How is the business carried out? How is the load distributed? Answers to these questions are lacking in this movie and it is details like this which truly elevate crime films and make them realistic. The ending was also a little too Gung-Ho for my liking, I also liked the fact while this film had better editing than Prisoners, the film still had some "fat" and could have been trimmed by fifteen minutes or so. Lastly, I am glad that this movie had a very unique well shot encounter between the Cartel and Narcotics unit it was in an underground tunnel of sorts and the shots alternated between night vision and normal vision while ominous music played in the background, good stuff, I like that Villeneuve has made this more visually appealing than his previous works.… Expand

It's the kind of movie that tries to shock you into feeling something by dangling statistics in front of your nose and proudly announcing "Hey, you hear that gunfire? Those aren't firecrackers! Aren't you scared now?"

It's anchored around Brolin's smug but ultimately uninteresting mystery man, Blunt's "experienced" FBI agent (who spends most of the movie with the same frightened-Bambi look on her face, occasionally adding a few tears), and Del Toro doing his best to add intensity to his cookie-cutter killer character (oh, of course you weren't supposed to guess who he was working for, even though someone told you in the first half-hour of the movie! oh, of course he has a token dead family thrown in when we're explaining his motives- how else could he feel sorry for our sobby FBI agent? etc.).

It's humorless. charmless, and banal. The people behind this movie don't even manage to capture the horrifying thrill you might get out of the fact that, for the people who live and work around these cartels, this violence is normal- they undercut that by having the male characters swagger, monologue, and lecture us about these terrible things like little boys trying to gross out their sisters. There is absolutely nothing of interest to be had in these two hours, and I don't know why so many people are giving it positive reviews.… Expand

After a stunningly horrific opening the film meanders disappointingly before advancing the story in to any meaningful or understandable context. Dealing as it does with the drug trade between Mexico and the states, the picture is predictably violent requiring constant viewer attention, but is never boring. The screenplay is generally fine, but there are definitely situations that are questionable plot contrivances (Officials fast tracking cars through the border only to have them caught in a traffic jam; The pointless act of obtaining Blunt’s signature to stop her talking, and even Del Toro’s motive for his involvement in the operation). The traffic jam shootout is actually a very good set piece and, whilst the film may take its time for three quarters of its length, there is no denying the power and tension created in the last half an hour. The sound and music add volumes in atmosphere and the performances of the three leads are good.
Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro both play unsympathetic characters. Brolin comes over as smug and confidently self-satisfied whilst Del Toro, giving the film’s best performance, is a silent and mysterious character who can turn impassively violent in a heartbeat. Surprisingly, given the early buzz on her role, Emily Blunt’s character turns out to be very reactionary to the males around her. For much of the running time she hasn’t a clue as to what is going on and seems to be there either to be brutalised or ignored, appearing naïve and out of her depth. Considering that this is the type of lead that would normally have gone to a male star it is all the more surprising a let-down. This is definitely not a performance heading for an Oscar nomination despite her excellence at what little is required of her.… Expand

Few issues are as timely as the War on Drugs and "Sicario" - a mesmerisingly crafted and intelligently written thriller - impressed me with the courage of its bipartisanship. It is unflinching in its depiction of the violence and brutality of the cartels. At the same time, it readily admits that the War on Drugs has been, for all intents and purposes, a chaotic failure of its own ambitions. It is left to the audience to decide which of these two realities is more shocking.

This is a film with a solid narrative made spellbinding by its performances and direction. Kinetic, suspenseful and beautifully shot, the film is able to run deeper thanks to its actors. Emily Blunt is a capable and engaging lead. The drug war threatens to consume her innocence and the desperation of her resistance is heartbreaking to watch. Josh Brolin and Benicio del Toro, meanwhile, both turn in career-best performances that ought to have it out for the Supporting Actor Oscar. Of the two, del Toro has the edge. Brolin is faultless, lending Matt's bravado and guile a sinister quality, but del Toro is imposingly hypnotic as the enigmatic Alejandro. He drifts around the action like a phantom until he springs into action with electrified intensity and the presence of a whirlwind. The final act belongs to him.… Expand

Sicario is a powerful movie, an important movie. It’s the best movie I’ve seen so far this year. The casting is perfect. Benicio Del Toro is superb. The casting is perfect. Benicio Del Toro is superb. His performance is easily worthy of an Oscar nomination. Josh Brolin and Emily Blunt are also extremely good. As a hardened movie watcher, this is my kind of movie.
The movie maintains a consistently high level of dramatic tension. It also has the necessary level of believability and realism. While the level of violence is very high, it’s not what I would consider gratuitous. Sicario isn’t as dark as No country for Old Men, but if you tend to hide your face at such movies, then Sicario probably isn’t for you.
Emily Blunt plays a by-the-book FBI agent who volunteers for an assignment being run by James Brolin, purportedly under the auspices of the Department of Defense, to disrupt the Mexican drug cartels. The ruthlessness of these drug lords is unquestioned, a point evidenced through scenes of mutilated bodies hung from ropes beneath city bridges in Juarez, Mexico, and further driven home when Del Torro suggests to Blunt that the victims probably didn’t even do anything wrong, the drug lords simply want people to know that this is what happens to you if you do something they don’t like. Juarez, which is just across the border from El Paso, is one of the deadliest cities in the world.
The story is a twist on a couple of old tropes. In Sicario (and maybe in real life), America and Mexico are losing the battle against the drug cartels. Brolin has been authorized to do whatever it takes to turn the tide. Benicio Del Toro, whose background is even murkier than Brolin’s, has been enlisted to help. Blunt is recruited to join the team for reasons that aren’t revealed to her. She’s neither a new agent, nor a jaded veteran. She’s been exposed to some hard core violence and death, and she’s performed well, but she’s not a fully seasoned veteran.
After joining Brolin’s team, it quickly becomes clear that Blunt is in way over her head. In addition, she strongly objects to the methodology employed by Brolin as being both illegal and immoral. (If your enemy is helpless and you kill him, are you any better than your enemy?)
The film maker wants you to agonize over is whether Blunt is right or wrong in her convictions. As if to further inflame the tension, the movie pits masculine against feminine. Blunt is the only female in the group. The movie taunts you with a female lead character that may not be as smart or as wise as you would like her to be. But this is red herring, meant to test you’re feminist sensitivities. As an actor, I like Blunt a lot, and to her credit, she takes the role that she is given and she plays it great. But, in the end, Del Torro dominates. In the not-soon-to-be-forgotten closing scene, Benicio tells Blunt to, ‘go home, you’ll never survive here. This is the land of wolves and you’re no wolf.’
When Oscar time rolls around, you’re going to hear a lot of people say, “I never heard of that film, what’s it about?” Don’t be like that. Go see this film.… Expand

My only real gripe with this film was the slight decrease in thrills in the second act and sometimes Josh Brolins humour, whilst slight, didn't always fit in with the tone trying to be set (although it was particularly well done). So I urge you to see this film, especially for the ending because it will cling to you like a parasite, guaranteed… Expand

This movie was awesome! The music lil bit over the top but still phenomenal. Emily blunt and benicio were superb! I cut one point because of the plot was bit confusing and hard but still manageable and smooth.

Benicio really perfect with his mysterious character, a quiet but relentless person who will go away but nothing just to seek revenge (this is the final element of surprise). Josh Brolin appear convincingly as an agent without empathy but to fullfill his missions. Emily Blunt is so naturally perform as an idealistic FBI agent who was so fragile , when she finally found out that all the noble values , code of ethic that she upheld was not able to prevent the war against narcotics cartels but in brutal way. In my list Sicario is ranked no.4 the from 10 All Time Best Crime Drama movie. Heart pounding, nerve grapping. Simply the best movie 2015.… Expand

I had“A thriller set in the world of drug trafficking evokes the high stakes and high risks of the drug trade”--a synopsis of the new movie “Sicario”? Actually this is the first line of the 2000 movie “Traffic” but describes both movies.

I had heard good word of mouth about “Sicario” and with 7 new movies opening today I put a question as which one to see on the film buffs facebook page and the vote was overwhelmingly for this movie. All I have to ask is, “why?” Yes, Benicio Del Toro gives a mesmerizing performance, as a former Columbian who was a prosecutor and has good reason to hate drug dealers. It is explained that sicario is slang for a hitman and he defines the term. One of the many things I didn’t like about the movie is that you will know the reason why before it is spelled out. Josh Brolin, a favorite of mine, as head of a task force but for who unknown, gives a solid performance. I have heard much about Emily Blunt’s performance but I found her to be way out of her depth as an equal FBI agent in the playing field of macho acting men.

Anyone who has even seen a movie about drug cartels know it is a rough, tough no holds barred, world of killing and “Sicario” shows that from the opening with a house invasion exposing dozens of rotting bodies in plastic, followed by naked bodies hanging upside down in the Mexican streets. Shortly after there is a scene of the ‘good’ guys slaughtering 8-10 guys in a traffic tie-up at the border. Later there is torturing with water, beatings, forcibly poking of a finger in someone’s ear and, yes, the scene of a lone man shooting, killing 7 men. While the point of violence is necessary to show there are quite a few gratuitous scenes.

There is a strong supporting cast from Jon Bernthal as a pickup in a bar to Bernardo Saracino as a major cartel boss and Julio Cesar Cedillo as a minor one along with Daniel Kaluuya, as Blunt’s partner, who requires a suspension of belief to accept his character and Victor Garber as one of the many bosses of the American team along with others.

While direction by Denis Villkeneuve is very professional neither he nor the screenwriter Taylor Sheridan bring anything new to the drug trafficking movie including that it is violent and bad guys on both sides of the fence. The opening music was, to me, a blasting wall of sound and at times during the film very intrusive while at times thye camera work of Roger Deakins was really first rate.

Now I need to know what the film buffs who recommended the film saw in “Sicario” that I didn’t.… Expand

All she basically did was stand in the background and whine. When she tried to do something important she was stopped EASILY. Alejandro was an interesting character and was in my opinion the true protagonist of this movie as he actually contributed to its plot. The end parts felt like they had some switched out scenes that didn't make any sense after being retaped. The Night Vision filters were extremely unnecessary. The acting wasn't that good for some of the minor characters either. Some of them were supposed to be going through a hard time like (SPOILER) a kid's father died at the hands of Alejandro, and they didn't sell any emotion at all. I feel like this is building up to a much better sequel but this 1st movie was nothing to write home about. The ending was very unsatisfying and proves to me this one was only a set up for a sequel. 1 more note: I felt the plot was very hard to follow and wasn't very interesting.… Expand

Overall, despite kind of a slow pace towards the beginning, the film quickly picks up and doesn't let go until its final moments. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. An idealistic FBI agent is enlisted by an elected government task force to aid in the escalating war against drugs at the border area between the U.S. and Mexico.

Sicario is another well crafted, tense thriller from director Denis Villeneuve, scripted by 'Sons of Anarchy' writer Taylor Sheridan, and shot beautifully by none other than Roger Deakins. It drags you, face first, into the raging drug war between US forces and Mexican cartels. South of the border, we see a house raid that uncovers dead bodies decaying behind walls. An explosion results in the deaths of several men belonging to Emily Blunt's team. It puts her on a mission to draw out one of the major drug lords responsible, with U.S. forces led by Josh Brolin, cooperating alongside the silent and mysterious Benicio del Toro.

Once into Juarez, Mexico, we see a disturbing scene of mutilated corpses hanging in the street. This is part of a 15 to 20 minute scene of pure tension that grips you from start to finish. Steady photography follows a police convoy through the streets and traffic. Ariel shots glide over the city and dry landscape. A haunting score with it's ominous deep rumbling is present throughout. The scene ends with a brutal shootout on a border crossing. It's the beginning of Blunt's journey into a mission that blurs the line between crime and justice.

The cast are all on top of their game. Emily Blunt has starred in a variety of roles in different genres, and here we see her tough yet vulnerable, a believer in justice and going by the book. Benicio del Toro becomes more important as the story progresses, his motivations unclear until the end, a frightening figure with a hunger for revenge. Josh Brolin is also great, a shady task force leader who knows everything about the brutal world he operates in. My one complaint was the little time given to the the drug lords who are only introduced towards the end.

With a runtime of two hours, the film never out stays it's welcome. The tone is consistent and rarely strays from the tense and grim style, with spots of humour here and there. The pace of the film ticks along nicely without over explaining or rushing important scenes. Again, the score by Johann Johannsson is fantastic with low rumblings that build into a wall of noise.

Suspenseful, compelling and sophisticated on it's own terms, Sicario mostly side steps mainstream predictable expectations, and it's all the better for it.… Expand

The film boasts strong performances from Emily Blunt as the out-of-her-depth FBI agent Kate Macer, Josh Brolin as the pragmatic and ruthless operative Matt Graver, and Benicio del Toro as the enigmatic and menacing Alejandro. Behind the camera, the direction from Denis Villeneuve and sublime cinematography by Roger Deakins present this grimey desperate world with skill and flair, while the film is backed by a dark brooding soundtrack that keeps the gloomy, threatening tone throughout.

This movie is definitely not for the faint hearted; its relentlessly violent and dark and offer little in the way of hope, but if you don't mind stepping into the shadows and getting a little dirty, this is a thriller not to miss.… Expand

Director Denis Villeneuve (Prisoners) teams up with cinematographer extraordinaire Roger Deakins (The Shawshank Redemption, Fargo) in an ultra-realist tense and bleak crime thriller, set in the backdrop of the current version of the USA’sDirector Denis Villeneuve (Prisoners) teams up with cinematographer extraordinaire Roger Deakins (The Shawshank Redemption, Fargo) in an ultra-realist tense and bleak crime thriller, set in the backdrop of the current version of the USA’s so-called “war on drugs” centered around Mexico, and within the wider context of an evolving decades-old crisis.

‘Sicario’ is a striking and well-crafted tense action thriller with an ominous feel throughout in keeping with Villeneuve’s recent work. There’s also a clear tactical-militaristic style that’s reminiscent of Kathryn Bigelow’s work in ‘Zero Dark Thirty’ and ‘The Hurt Locker’ , which itself should be an eye-opener as it’s depicting what happens on a regular basis just south of the most powerful and advanced nation on earth, seemingly uncontrollably, often bleeding across the border.

Emily Blunt delivers a strong central performance, through which the audience discovers this insane world, as a female FBI agent in a distinctly male environment but ‘Sicario’ doesn’t dwell on it or get sucked into sexual politics. Josh Brolin is also solid while Benicio Del Toro steals the show with his second superb performance in a drug-war drama. Which incidentally reminds us that given the escalation in drug-cartel activities over the last 15 years, perhaps it’s time for a sequel to Steven Soderbergh’s ‘Traffic’ which would greatly expand on what we see in ‘Sicario’.

And that’s perhaps the only major negative aspect of this film, Villeneuve’s decision to make the narrative an uncompromising mission-like thriller means it only skims the surface of the current drug-war, leaving us tantalized but unsatisfied by what might have been. The result is certainly compelling, but we would have liked to see an expansion of the context which has seen American authorities, namely the CIA, simultaneously fight against and benefit from drug trafficking while losing control of a crisis in the Americas that has existed for decades, but which is rapidly evolving into something increasingly ominous.

The Bottom Line..
A stark and meticulously crafted crime thriller, ‘Sicario’ does a cursory job illuminating the current state of the US “war on drugs”, but will keep you engaged and on the edge of your seat throughout, makes us more excited to see how Denis Villeneuve and Roger Deakins tackle the upcoming ‘Blade Runner’ sequel.… Expand

Emily Blunt plays a convincing ,by the book,FBI special agent ,whose own naive attitude and nature,gets put to the test as, she's taken into a world ,of mass murder,mutilation,drug wars and political and civilian unrest in the city of Juarez Mexico.She manages to be both cunning and relatable so that no moment feels wasted,whether it is her questioning the indiscriminate, often times risky and reckless,yet surprisingly effective working methods of her newly assigned teammates,or whether she is just throwing up after seeing over a dozen dead bodies being stuffed into walls,like forgotten painting,that lost their use.While Benicio Del Toro,gives the best performance in the movie,that may be told from Blunt's character's Kate's perspective,but the film rightfully belongs to him ,as his emotional arc is deeply intriguing and his past viciously brutal and impactful.Del Toro's Alejandro,is one of the coolest,meanest,and quietest hitmen we've seen all year,decade even,he may not say much,but when he does it means more than the actions of all the characters in the film combined,it's his best work I've seen and rightfully so.While Josh Brolin provides some nice humorous exchanges and masterfully hides his inner motivations and intents,delivering an almost cowboy-like attitude,with a handful of moral lessons to be taught to both Kate and the audience about war,peace and the borders between.
The world of Sicario,is bleak and hopeless,at no point is there a scene or a line or a visual symbol of some sort that indicates that there is still hope in Mexico,the drug war and those involved on both sides are so animalistic in the ways they fight each-other, that the lines are constantly blurred,and the only way to differentiate them from one-another, are uniforms and badges,take those away and you have yourself a gang war.The drop-dead gorgeous cinematography and direction by Villeneuve and Deakins works brilliantly in the movie's favor of delivering the said message.Incredible wide shots of the city,almost looking like a post-apocalyptic desert at times,gives off a sense that these people are quite literally in hell,that they took part in creation of.The action is superbly directed from a filmmaker who never really had action sequences in their past films,yet are capable of dramatizing and intensifying dialogue scenes and regular character exchanges ,more than some filmmakers can with pure action.The set-pieces in this film are peppered and expertly paced throughout,including a terrific shootout on a Mexican border,a thorough opening raid scene ,which leads to unexpected and deadly discoveries.The night-time apart from looking absolutely beautiful and actually darkening the faces of the characters ,without them being in open lit by lamps or lights or even city roads,has an eerie foreboding sense to it and the short gunfights that erupt in it ,with the use of goggles are spontaneous and frenetic ,adding kinetic energy and adrenaline,that lasts, throughout the whole movie.
Sicario is one of the best action films of the year,which cleverly tells a rather traditional drug-bust story,while actually delivering a swift,profound and touching message with it,in addition to towering performances from everyone in the cast,it excellently conveys its dark atmosphere with exquisitely good-looking visuals ,superb direction and the film just like it's lead character,says as much as it does and means more than meets the eye (or ear for that matter).It may not be as good as prisoners,but it certainly proves,why Villeneuve is the perfect choice for Blade Runner 2.… Expand

You see how the bad and really bad characters do have some feelings, but only for their families as they do awful things. Only Emily Blunt's idealistic character thinks it can be fixed the right way with normal actions. By the end of the movie, you realize bad people are the only ones who can possibly break up this evil. Amazing acting job from Benicio in retaining our sympathy as he commits atrocious acts! Josh added the right comical balance that made me keep watching despite the fact that I did not like the story. The movie depicts another instance of human depravity that is happening today.… Expand

Emily Blunt, on the other hand, had the most difficult role as the “pawn in the game,” yet you were always interested in her and what was happening to her even though she was as confused and suspicious about what was going on as the audience was most of the time. To make a character like that sympathetic is a neat trick. The movie also managed a message about the “drug wars” – which was perhaps the neatest trick of all – about why they exist at all and how cruel they are, which puts the movie a cut above most action films where the violence is simply meant to entertain.… Expand

My opinion, he stole the show (Oscar quality). Although Blunt was good in the movie, just thought her character was not very believable. If FBI, agent would know the harshness of the cartel, etc. So, think the writers did her character injustice, to a certain extent. Made her look innocent and frail, which I cannot believe especially after she uncovers 20+ bodies hidden behind a wall in Arizona. Brolin added to the creepy feel of the movie but have seen him play better roles in movies.… Expand

Villeneuve's taut direction, combined with beautiful cinematography, and an amazing score, make Sicario one of his best in his constantly growing filmography. OMFG. I can't emphasize enough in this review how much I absolutely loved this movie. I just finished watching this movie at 10pm and I had to get this review out ASAP. I just finished watching this movie at 10pm and I had to get this review out ASAP. I will start with the story which is cliché but it's also indomitably told in real time. I know a handful of movies that use flashbacks to tell the story but this one doesn't and I enjoy that fact. I will say this much about the story that it's about an FBI agent tasked with helping a non-disclosed agency take down a Cartel. I will now move onto the acting which brought there A-Game for sure. The cast is incredibly strong with Emily Blunt,Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro being the main three characters. They are all fascinating but Del Toro in my opinion blows the movie out of the water with his character. They all have fantastic rapport. I will now move onto the action which while this isn't a Michael Bay movie the scenes that do take place are on point with excruciating detail that it boarders realism. The scenes are violent and bloody and are meant to invoke a certain feeling of awe and dread simultaneously. I must also talk about the cinematography which was done by Roger Deakins who is a mastermind when it comes to the angles and etc of the film and it's absolutely Phenomenal in every aspect and it brings the movie to life and the sounds of everything in the movie from the gunfire to the city aspect will leave you transfixed onto the screen. The banter between the characters including the Delta Force Operators is impeccably done. The director Denis Villeneuve was terrific and I applaud him for such a powerhouse of a motion picture. I will finish by saying this is my new favorite movie of 2015 which prior was "Mad Max: Fury Road" but this takes the whole bakery. I would recommend watching this movie without a doubt. As the main character, Emily Blunt gives a perfect performance that make us feel and empathize what she is going through throughout the movie. We can feel her frustration, pain, anger and disappointment through her face with just few dialogs. The very last scene really did it for me and it broke my heart. However, Benicio Del Toro as Alejandro gives the best performance of the whole movie.
The writing in this movie is amazing. There are a lot of questions raised in this movie and they answer them seamlessly and perfectly at the right time just to keep us entertained until the very last scene.
The cinematography in this movie is the one that really blows my mind. There are a lot of scenes that you just think "Wow, that is really beautiful". However, for me this is also one of the weakness of this movie because they just keep showing you these beautifully shot scenes that is not necessary to the storyline given the limited amount of dialog and longer runtime of this movie.… Expand

Genius. Denis Villeneuve did it again.

Sicario is the kind of drama/action movie you wanna see. The tension and emotions are present 110%. The whole time I could not stop asking myself the question ''Who will pull the trigger first?''. YouGenius. Denis Villeneuve did it again.

You don't really trust anyone except Kate (Emily Blunt) - who is not trusting anyone either. Every time an ally is met, that ally either dies or betrays someone.

Good movie for the genre, with better than average dialogue, cinematography. Involving and suspenseful, entirely predictable. So for what it is and tries to be, I give it a 7. In the pantheon of films, it is more like a 3.

Not for kids of any age. A very dark, gory movie with an eerie soundtrack to enhance the plot. Violence incarnate to reflect the depraved nature of the drug business. What gave me LOL moments was the presumption that the female lead was believable. She was not. Her character was a feminist fantasy shattered by the one real scene where a possible hit man succeeds in nearly choking her to death. Had the dark angel not saved her, she would have been toast ... as it would be in real life. Her protesting and silly announcement she would "tell all" was farcical since the "tough chick" could not handle the truth when presented with it. Which is she, a chick-with-a-**** law enforcer or a rigidly moralistic do-gooder who witnessed drugista ruthlessness but could not take them down? I found greater sympatico with the actual hit man than the cardboard cutout female FBI agent.… Expand

Instead of motivating the events of the story herself, our main character is relegated to witnessing all of the acts be committed by other characters around her. Yes, it is clear that there is a point being made here about the futile frustrations of the American war on drugs. But if "Zero Dark Thirty" has taught us anything, it's that movies can be made about the asinine quirks of bureaucracy without having an inactive main character. This issue aside though, it's clear Villeneuve's crafted a real winner here, especially when you look at the film's pulse-pounding final act. With "Sicario" and Villeneuve's other films in mind, it's safe to say the director's found himself down quite a badass trajectory.… Expand

Took my wife to see this movie and we both loved it. The action pieces were amazing and during some of them it had me feel like I was there. With a predictable plot on a well-worn theme, and with little dialogue of note, it's very hard for Villeneuve to sustain any dramatic tension. What tension there is is largely supplied by an excellent and suitably grim soundtrack. The film's 'message', if that's the right word, is that after decades of politicians' rhetoric about 'the war on drugs', the reality is that this is what drug enforcement has become - just another bloody war - with all that implies for the rule of law and the pursuit of justice. That's really the best I can say about Sicario.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Sicario is a film about the powerlessness of man when faced with great evil. When it all comes over you, more akin to a storm or some other natural catastrophe.

The film has a slow pace and it takes its time building up to the main point of the story. The final scene with Emily Blunt and Benicio Del Toro is among the best that I have seen this year.

Sicario's combination of gruesome violence and minimal soundtrack creates this strange atmosphere to the film. It is amidst the most depressing I've see. Now I'm not talking about tear-jerking sad films, but about that sort of bleak hopelessness that is hard to get right.

Recently there was an article that said they are planning a sequel with Benicio Del Toro's character and I wondered how would they do that since the film's focus is on Kate. She embodies the film's point. Very quickly you notice that she is the only female character in a land of men. I think this was a deliberate choice to further showcase how she stands out in this world, a world without the good guys. A world where those who play by the rules can't win.

Overall, Sicario might not be a film for everyone but I think it will definitely have a place amongst this year's best.… Expand

Plot twists are key here and director Denis Villeneuve makes sure of that. Lies, cheats, violence, it all bends together in the shocking climax that I won't forget for a long time. It has been nominated for a Palme De Or and I hope it wins. A must watch.… Expand
