If not better -- Shrek 2 is certainly more innovative than the first film. Pros: Even more hilarious characters and dialog; rich visuals; probably more charming for the kiddies. Cons: A bit too pop culture referential.

Why, by making the sequel even closer to perfection of course. Andrew Adamson has fleshed out his wonderful comic fantasy universe that parodies both fairytale conventions and the modern world so ingeniously. Shrek (Mike Myers), Donkey (Eddie Murphy) and Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz) remain engaging and easy to empathise with, and have all grown as characters, and face new life challenges as they travel to Far Far Away to meet Fiona's parents King Harold and Queen Lillian, voiced by the dream paring of John Cleese and Julie Andrews (which results in one of the funniest moments in the film - that fine romantic comedy staple of the awkward dinner with the in-laws). The cast is further fleshed out by Antonio Banderas as Puss in Boots, a suave, swashbuckling sword-for-hire with a deep sense of honour, but who isn't above exploiting his inherent cuteness. Jennifer Saunders makes a great villain as the Fairy Godmother, her performance an inspired mix of Michael Corleone and Oprah Winfrey, who seeks to secure the crowning of her spoilt, empty-headed son Prince Charming (Rupert Everett) and above all to maintain the status quo of traditional fairytales, of which Shrek living happily ever after with Princess Fiona is in complete defiance of. Shrek 2 is smarter, more bitingly satirical, even more visually splendiferous and far, far funnier than the first film. The jokes are wide ranging, from visual gags (my personal favourite being a shop in Far Far Away called Versarchery) to sitcom-style one-liners (Donkey proclaiming to Puss in Boots "I'm sorry but the position of annoying talking animal sidekick has already been taken) to the completely unexpected (after threatening King Harold, in her complete frustration at her schemes unraveling, the Fairy Godmother stops her flying carriage at a drive-thru to buy some comfort food) to the crude (the discovery that Pinocchio wears lady's underwear). At its core, Shrek 2 is the next chapter in a good old-fashioned love story. It adopts timeless themes of love, sacrifice and friendship and emphasises the importance of being true to yourself, no matter how life beats you down. Adamson presents these themes earnestly, and with great wit, and makes them affecting and relevant to a modern audience composed of both children and adults. The use of a tongue-in-cheek take on iconic fairytales, something we have all grown up with, makes the second chapter of Shrek's story recognisable but pleasingly fresh at the same time - everyone, no matter your age can take away something from this heartfelt animation extravaganza, and you'll likely have a smile on your face for hours after the credits, and Karaoke segment, roll. Shrek was a very special animated film. Shre 2, on the other hand, is truly one of the finest animated films of all time, and certainly DreamWorks Animation's most glorious achievement. Expand

This movie more or less fixes everything that was wrong with the first movie and makes what worked even better. This is how a sequel should be.

As before, fantastic performances by all the cast, including the newcomers. Story this time round feels fresh and finally gives the Shrek universe a sense of its own identity.

Overall:
There is nothing I can fault with this installment. Shrek 2 is by far the best of the series and have set a really high standard that Dreamworks has rarely ever reached again.

Again nothing is safe or sacred humor-wise. Be it fairy tales, Disney, tropes or stereotypes. This works again very well and it is a heavy attack on your risible muscles. It start a few days after the events of Shrek as Shrek and Fiona are invited to visit Fionas (royal) parents in the Kingdom Far Far Away (good pun:-). As you can imagine this will be a hilarious experience for everyone. It makes good use of the established characters and their voice actors. Shrek by Mike Myers, Donkey by Eddie Murphy and princess Fiona by Cameron Diaz are still a dream team. The movie adds fan favorite Puss in Boots voiced by Antonio Banderas who is so good that he gets a spin off, Prince Charming (Rupert Everett), the Fairy Goodmother (Jennifer Saunders), King Herold by the legendary John Cleese and Queen Lillian voiced by Julie Andrews. All together are an excellent addition. The animations have also improved and the soundtrack is excellent. It is more of the (awesome) same sequel and I think they deserve praise for it. Overall this is an excellent follow up that delivers great humor. It is however not as unique as the prequel. I hesitate to give a 10/10 but also think a 9/10 might be too low. I decided to give a 9/10 because it is a bit weaker than the original. Expand

It has a great story that feels like a continuation of the first one and has some sharp writing, more geared towards adults than kids. The characters from the first one are back and are as likeable as before along with some new ones that are welcome additions to the cast. On top of that you have some pretty funny jokes, moreso than in the previous film, that the adults will get moreso than the kids. Shrek 2 is a great sequel having everything the first one had and more making it an easy recommendation to fans of the first one along with people who were not even that big on the first one (like Doug Walker). A rare sequel that manages to live up to it's already-fantastic predecessor. "Shrek 2" is hilarious, beautifully animated, well-written, and not afraid to take on some new ground with the series, introducing us to some great, memorable new characters (Puss in Boots is a particular highlight). To this day, "Shrek 2" is still one of the best films that animation has to offer, and if you've been ignoring the film, stop that now. "Shrek 2" was phenomenal in 2004, and it's still phenomenal to this day. Expand

That obstacle is the ending of the original Shrek, which neatly wrapped up every conceivable aspect of the story, leaving little room for a sequel. Originally, Shrek had been designed as a one-off movie, but, when it became a huge hit, Dreamworks decided that a second installment was warranted. However, with Shrek and Princess Fiona married and living happily ever after as ogres, some creative brainstorming had to be done to arrive at a sequel-worthy concept.

To be fair, Shrek 2 doesn't have much of a storyline. It's basically about the meeting between newlyweds Shrek (voice of Mike Myers) and Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz) and the bride's parents, King Harold (John Cleese) and Queen Lillian (Juilie Andrews). To facilitate this encounter, Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey (Eddie Murphy) must travel to the kingdom of Far, Far Away. The grotesque appearance of the happy couple isn't to the liking of the ruling family or to studly Prince Charming (Rupert Everett), who wants Fiona for his wife. With a little help from his mom, the Fairy Godmother (Jennifer Saunders) and a killer cat named Puss 'n Boots (Antonio Banderas), Charming seeks to win Fiona away from Shrek.

The animation is on the same level as that of Shrek, which was, in its own time, groundbreaking. There haven't been many advances in computer animation since then, but Shrek 2 hasn't done any backsliding. The film looks as bright and imaginative as its predecessor. The non-humans are surprisingly life-like while the humans still retain the slightly awkward look of something designed on a computer. There are a lot of background jokes; I have a feeling that it will take multiple viewings to uncover some of the more subtle ones. As in the first film, it's clear that the Shrek animators had fun putting everything together.

With its appealing blend of animated comedy, romance, and adventure, Shrek 2 follows the formula of its predecessor while maintaining enough originality not to come across as a direct copy. Fans of the first movie will be pleased. Although Shrek 2 isn't as breezy as Shrek, it's a respectable effort and a solid example of family-friendly entertainment. The enjoyable animated romp lives up to expectations, which is more than can be said for any of its current big-budget multiplex competition.

(Puss's look of innocence with the eyes was so sweet) The original voice cast return and are given fresh and very well-done material that they make the most of. Eddie Murphy mayn't be to everyone's taste, but I personally thought he was very funny, especially when he keeps saying "Are we there yet?" The new characters are well done, though I am not hugely fond of Jennifer Saunders as the Fairy Godmother, though I really did like John Cleese, Julie Andrews and Rupert Everett. The animation is just as lovely as it was in the first. The only other criticism I have of the movie, is that the plot isn't always as involving as the one in the original. But it is still rock-solid entertainment, for everyone to enjoy. 8/10 Bethany Cox. Expand

In Shrek 2, our hero — a newlywed ogre with a persistent flatulence problem — is in jeopardy from a king who wants him dead, a psycho fairy godmother and a wife who thinks he needs an extreme makeover. Shrek 2 brims with perverse pleasures that show no respect for the rules of kiddie-cartoon form, which is all to the good.

Since Pixar came up with Toy Story in 1995, film animation has regularly kicked the tired ass of live-action in terms of visual ingenuity and wit. Just watch Finding Nemo or Waking Life or The Triplets of Belleville or Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away. These groundbreakers have so raised the bar on art and attitude that the Academy devised a new category in 2001 to honor the year's Best Animated Feature. The first Oscar winner was Shrek, a swing-for-the-fences comedy from DreamWorks that managed to stick it to Disney characters dulled by too many years as theme-park attractions. Take the description of Snow White ("She lives with seven men, but she's not easy").

Shrek 2 is double the fun of the original: more magical and more technically assured. Co-director Andrew Adamson developed a story, based on the book by William Steig, that picks up the plot and flies off in new directions. Shrek, again voiced by Mike Myers using a Scottish brogue only slightly less thick than Fat Ba d's, has married Princess Fiona, voiced by Cameron Diaz. Their honeymoon references great moments of movie love, such as the upside-down kiss from Spider-Man. Myers and Diaz earned $10 million each for repeating their roles in the sequel. So did Eddie Murphy, who does the voice of Donkey, an ass in every sense of the word. They're all worth it, considering the laughs they generate.

Shrek and his bride are called to the kingdom of Far Far Away — a sendup of Beverly Hills, with stores such as Farbucks and Old Knavery — to meet Fiona's royal parents, royally voiced by John Cleese and Julie Andrews. Both are shocked that their daughter has married Shrek and turned full-time ogre herself; she was once uglified only at night, when dad would lock her in a tower. Now he conspires with Fairy Godmother, voiced by Ab Fab's Jennifer Saunders, to kill Shrek and move in her son Charming (Rupert Everett), a prince whose true love is his mirror.

The most hilarious new character is Puss in Boots, the feline assassin hired to kill Shrek. As voiced by Antonio Banderas in a parody of his swashbuckling Zorro role, Puss steals the movie. With his Spanish accent and bedroom eyes for man, woman and beast, Puss charms everyone except Donkey, who huffs that "the position of annoying talking animal is already taken. The plot is loaded with surprises too juicy to reveal, including how Donkey and Puss end up duetting to "Livin' La Vida Loca." Shrek 2 may be computer-generated, but its innate heart and glorious sense of mischief make it one of the best and most humane movies of the summer.

Of course, the first film always has the advantage of novelty, but personally I believe that this sequel has managed to match the initial film, both in quality as in spirit and ability to entertain us.

The script takes the story more or less where the first film ended: Shrek and Fiona got married and are finally living together in the swamp. But news run fast, and they will soon receive a visit from a delegation from the kingdom of Far Far Away, ruled by Fiona's parents. The message invites them to a reception where they will be introduced to the kingdom. It turns out that Shrek knows he was never popular, and the fact that they are both ogres is going to be a cause for troubles. In between, they will also have the opposition and intrigues of Prince Charming and his mother, the powerful and maleficent Fairy Godmother.

As I said, the film manages to keep the quality level of its predecessor and to honor it with a story that follows what we have already seen. Despite this, the film is not always as fresh and engaging as the first. Very well done and edited in a very competent way, the film works well and entertains us wonderfully, in addition to continuing to give us a very original alternative version of the fairy tales we were used to. The mixture of naive and innocent humor with adult themes continues to be visible throughout the film, which brings interesting and educational messages about stereotypes and the acceptance of those who are different. The film inherits almost all the cast and crew from the previous production and, thus, to the voices of Cameron Diaz, John Lithgow, Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy, we have also some honorable additions such as Jennifer Saunders, Rupert Everett, the veteran and noble voices of Julie Andrews and John Cleese or the dense tones of António Banderas, which is one of the best novelties in the film due to the witty and well-idealized way he gave voice and spirit to Puss in Boots. Despite going unnoticed among the stars, I also want to highlight the good voice work of Conrad Vernon, who lends his voice to several characters in the film.

At a technical level, the film is impeccable. DreamWorks invested a lot in this production, and it paid off: the film is visually elegant and beautiful, with excellent colors and pristine cinematographic work. I especially liked the way the realm of Fiona's parents turns out to be, in reality, a kind of joke with the city of Los Angeles, where the movie studios are located. They even put there the Hollywood Sign! The soundtrack is not as striking nor remarkable as that of the initial film, but I especially liked the opening song, "Accidentally in Love", and the version of "Holding Out for a Hero" by Jennifer Saunders herself.

But after seeing it for the first time a few years ago, I decided that I really liked Shrek. I had to go on a vacation soon after finishing the first movie, so right after coming back I proceeded to watch the next one. And I think it's probably because of the trip or something, but I actually liked Shrek 2 more. There are many reasons why I feel this one is clearly superior to the first one, and why this is my favourite sequel among any movie (other than Lord of the Rings and The Dark Knight trilogies of course).
The movie begins with the part where Shrek 1 ended. Shrek and Fiona are happily married and live their ogre lives in peace. The reason why this movie works so well is because unlike regular sequels, this one actually expanded on what could happen in future. If this was a conventional sequel it would have shown that Lord Farquaad has come back somehow and now he has joined forces with some other villain to beat them. Also some random characters would have been introduced while others would have been killed.
The movie simply begins with the feeling of an adventure. Shrek, Donkey and Fiona going to Far, Far Away to meet Fiona's parents who have never seen her in the last 20 years, that's a perfect story. Remember how we thought about Shrek and Fiona before the first movie? We changed our minds for the better after we watched the movie and learnt a lesson. Fiona's parents, however, have still not seen that happen. And this is something Fairy Godmother and Prince Charming take the advantage of.
The reason why this movie worked but the next two didn't was because this movie never dragged any concept. Shrek and the fairy tale characters became friends, Shrek and Donkey saved Fiona, they fell in love and married. Period. This was never 'revised' upon. Rather either the consequences of those actions or the other aspects of life were shown. Every scene looked interesting for some reason. It's almost like the creators poured all their love in every scene. No scene feels like they were just trying to get over it. Every moment is cherished: Fiona crying, Shrek meeting Puss, Shrek's friends watching TV - everything is memorable.
Shrek 2 is how a sequel should be. It should give us exactly what we wish to know. It does not force any character, it does not force any scene. Everything that is introduced in this movie, every joke that takes place happens within the audience's interest. I really wish if a new Shrek movie is made, they make it like this. Shrek is meant to be something that is remembered for all time, not a meme. It's one of the most iconic 3D animated movies I've ever seen.

Shrek 2 is my favorite animated film ever. A perfect sequel that has a luxurious story. The characters are also a hit and they added a cat to us, which is simply sensational and it's no wonder that they made a separate film about him. Shrek 2Shrek 2 is my favorite animated film ever. The ending sequence alone would be enough, but this movie comes out and delivers one of the greatest computer animated films of all time.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Back in 2001, DreamWorks released a film called Shrek. The film was loved by many, but it was most notably known for the memes and jokes the film had in it. But in 2004, DreamWorks announced that they were working on a new film: Shrek 2. Many people were looking forward to the film when it released on 19th May, 2004. I wasn't born at the time Shrek 2 released, but when I did see the film with my family, I wasn't old enough to actually rate the film, around that time whenever my parents asked me what did I think of a film I just watched I would describe it as "good" even if it was an awful movie. So recently, I decided to watch it again because of a certain youtuber who likes Tamotoa from Moana. So is this better than the original Shrek or as awful as Shrek 3? Find out in this review!

So, I'm starting things off with the cast. The classic cast is back like Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy. And there are new voice actors like Jennifer Saunders. The respected voice actors are really good at their job and make a scene that's supposed to be funny be funny. Mike Myers still has the classic Shrek accent and Jennifer Saunders is amazing as the Fairy Godmother who is in my opinion the best Shrek villain, (Although I haven't seen Shrek Forever After yet) The next thing I am going to talk about is the plot. The plot in this film is in my opinion better than the first film. This film also had a very likeable villain for the Shrek series. There was also a lot of jokes in this film from pretty much every character, however, the thing I don't like about this film is that there is a lot of pop culture references, but at least there isn't as many as The Simpsons.

However, the thing that makes this film the best in the series is the climax. Many people say that All Star is the best song in the Shrek series, but in my opinion, Holding Out for A Hero easily beats it. This song is perfect for the climax and is an amazing performance by Jennifer Saunders. Pretty much every scene shown when this song plays fits and honestly makes this scene very enjoyable. In conclusion, this film is a must to watch as it is by far better than the original Shrek film in my opinion.
