From that point on, there are solid special effects, and interesting storyline on a fairly grand scale, and some of the best fight choreography I've ever had the pleasure to watch, but the true highlights of the movie are the comparatively scenes allowing the relationships between the characters to truly play out. Watching adversaries who resepect each other come to realize that their conversation will end in violence, or a brother and sister who really truly care for each other, you realize that basic human interaction is what drives this film. And in the final act, that is where the film takes it's boldest steps...not as sci-fi, but as a solid, character driven drama. Expand

Pretty damn great. can't believe how much was packed into two hours. the only real gripe i have is that parts were a bit too stereotypically hollywood, especially the climactic fight scenes.

Silence is the secret to effective horror and suspense, which the movie packs plenty of. That's why the cacophonous Star Wars prequels were so depressingly sterile. Outer-space flights and battles in Serenity are appropriately quiet, not just for effect but because apparently somebody was paying attention in physics class--sound requires a medium. The only audible ship battles take place in atmosphere. Why should I praise realism in a space western? I don't know...it was so refreshing to see! Also, taking a hint maybe from Spielberg's War of the Worlds, the Reaver heat rays look and sound menacing. These aren't the cute little blasts of Star Wars, but jagged beams of death that hum ominously. The Reavers' quick viciousness is shocking, and their predatory ships invite frightened fascination. (No spoilers here, just know that Reavers make Klingons look like Care Bears.) For all its balletic violence and clever lines, Serenity respects the golden rule: make your film character-driven and the action will have weight, the quips will hold interest, and even cowboy space opera is possible. The acting isn't perfect, and hackneyed cuteness occasionally surfaces. But by the ending Expand

I went into this movie ignorant of the Firefly series and left a true convert. Anyone who enjoys a thrilling action flick with vividly realized characters and a compelling plot will have nothing to complain about. BTW, shame on Zach D for his inaccurate comments! Whedon's script for Alien Resurrection never made it to the screen; his excellent work on Toy Story, among others, did survive in tact and are a testimony to his fine screenwriting. While this may be his directorical debut for the big screen, Whedon has contributed to plenty of great scripts over the years. Get your facts stright, Zach! Expand

My friend, a self confessed "Browncoat" dragged me along to one of the pre-screenings in Nottingham. I had no real hopes and was kinda expecting some cheesey sci-fi geek fest, but was pleasantly surprised. The characters were all unique and engaging with their own personal flaws that made them human, the action and adventure was a lot of fun and I really enjoyed how dark it got. I love nothing more than a film with a lot of heart and a lot of self discovery, mixed in with action, horror, some hilarious one liners and a great cast who clearly loved playing each and every role during their short run during the TV show. The graphics looked really great considering the small budget. I wasn't a fan of the show before, but after seeing Serenity I borrowed the DVD set off my friend to see what I had been missing, and boy, what a tremendous show it was. I highly recommend Serenity - a great time is guarenteed. Expand

With the addition of impressive special effects and production design, a grand and moving score from David Newman and Whedon's usual flair for snappy almost poetic dialogue, and this sci-fi really stands out from the crowd. Serenity is a fittingly grand and rewarding send-off to Firefly, an exceptional TV series cruelly cancelled before it reached its full potential, and Whedon thankfully wasn't tempted to overcomplicate the plot, keeping it relatively stripped-back and linear, sticking to resolving a couple of dangling plot threads from the series, and always focussed on the characters and their relationships that steadily develop over the course of their journey. It feels like we've never left the space-faring rustbucket, as the technically impressive single-shot opening sequence that guides us through the entire vessel proves - the characters are exactly where we left them, and we as an audience feel ready to be re-acquainted with their various eccentricities. The cast all deliver, with Nathan Fillion upping his performance as a far darker Captain Mal Reynolds than we saw in the TV series, Adam Baldwin's towering but soft-at-heart Jayne still brings the laughs, and Summer Glau's psychic warrior angel River proves to be a real force of nature. The newcomers also impress - Chiwetel Ejiofor is terrifyingly calm and collected as a fanatical nameless assassin, and David Krumholtz's information dealer Mr Universe is a fun character and invaluable ally to the crew of the Serenity. Like the preceding series, Serenity is a film of striking contrasts - science-fiction/western, Eastern culture/Western culture, the darkness of human nature and the eternal optimism in the human heart. As a film it delivers not just in terms of spectacle, but in terms of intelligent ideas and emotional character-driven drama, particularly in the film's stunning final act. This universe of galactic frontiers, settlers, smuggling, adventure and mad space cannibals remains endlessly entertaining, and if this really is the final time we'll see Whedon's beloved creation on-screen, then it has been given a majestic final voyage. To enjoy this movie fully you would have to have seen the series first, It's sheds (more) light on things we did and didn't already know which makes this movie so much more fun to watch. The fun characters are back, Whedon's always great snappy dialogue is also top-notch yet again, the better big budget special effects really enhance the movie as well, which was something the show didnt have the money for. It answers many unanswered questions, and informs us on things you didnt really wanted to know, but are still cool to know, but then again, the movie makes us ask questions that leave unanswered, and it doesn't answer ALL question we had about the show, which is the only reason why i dont give it a full score.

All in all 'Serenity' is immensely satisfying, and great on all levels, and it surely doesn't disappoints. When watching you'll just feel great to see this fun group of people back on screen for 1 last adventure.

(Would "Beigecoat" be more like it?) Nevertheless, everything that worked so well on the small screen is pleasurably extended, magnified and intensified in Whedon's very satisfying big-screen conclusion. (And by the way, let's take just a moment to whomp on the Fox Corporation's stupidly short-sighted hindquarters for treating the original series in such a cavalier fashion: running the episodes out of sequnce, pre-empting them half the time and in general spitting on the science fiction buffs and Whedon devotees that had been watching from day one. Why would a business outfit that had previously shown such insight in carving out programming for conservative news junkies, prime-time animation fans and those who want edgy HBO-style programming without having to pay extra for it not only drop the ball on this one, but do it with such arrogance? Did they learn nothing from slow starters such as Cheers and Seinfeld, neither of which even had a built-in guaranteed audience to begin with?) Anyway, it's highly enjoyable to watch Whedon--an unapologetic fanboy--both acknowledge and surpass his predecessors: anyone who remembers the tortuous plot mechanics Gene Rodenberry expended in order to get Captain Kirk and Lt. Uhura to exchange TV's first interracial kiss should love how Firefly/Serenity jumps right in with two of the crew members being a mixed couple with a very healthy, happy sex life! Whedon's obviously a huge Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark fan (Mal, an intergalactic rebel turned brigand, is a direct Han Solo/Indiana Jones descendant, who's played by Nathan Fillion with a joy that Harrison Ford hasn't been bringing to his film roles lately) but also surprises and delights audiences by introducing scores of less readily predictable pop culture influences into the mix; the plotline involving the galactic government's attempt to cover up crucial information that could literally have a life-or-death effect on the universe recalls many classic 'paranoid thrillers' from the early-to-mid 1970s such as Chinatown, The Conversation, All the President's Men, The Parallax View, Three Days of the Condor and even Jaws. But speaking personally as a huge fan of Whedon's TV gems Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, I think that the greatest of Whedon'sd many considerable strengths is his eye for characterization and relationships; not only do all three shows resemble the supernatural/SF/action equivalents of such great MTM-produced workplace-as-family comedies as The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Bob Newhart Show and WKRP in Cincinnati, but one of the keys to Whedon's ongoing love affair with his passionately devoted fans is his tremendous talent for making you, the viewer, feel like you're part of the Scooby Gang, Angel Enterprises or the Serenity crew. Not that many or all of the characters aren't hugely flawed, or that Whedon shields, talks down to, or babies his audience in any way: if you, like scores of fans, hated the eventual fates of Tara or Xander on Buffy or Cordelia or Fred on Angel, you'll have much to chew on or stew over after watching Serenity...but that's part of what hordes of Whedonphiles should be aware of when they sign on. As a first-time film director, Whedon gets the job done with both efficiency and heart and turns some of the negative comments that have been made about his TV background to major advantage: his action scenes and special effects are wonderfully intimate and immediate with special effects judiciously used...and you never feel as though you're drowning in a sea of CGI unreality. Firefly veterans may have a better time with this than the completely uninitiated because they have the background knowledge, but I've no doubt that moviegoers of both groups will be eager to describe Serenity with its futuristic, highly multicultural universe's ultimate expression of praise: it's shiny! I've tried to be honest and fair about this. If you are not a fan of the TV show then this film will not deliver with quite the strength and power that it would if you have watched the TV show. It remains a much better than average I've tried to be honest and fair about this. If you are not a fan of the TV show then this film will not deliver with quite the strength and power that it would if you have watched the TV show. It remains a much better than average sci-fi adventure, fun and moving, with a good swashbuckling thing going on too. I honestly think that most people would adore it, and I think it could ignite the kind of enthusiasm that the original Star Wars did if the right audience got hold of it. But I can't say that it would definitely happen. So for people who have not seen the show, I'm saying eight out of ten. If you have seen the show, and enjoyed it at all, then this will blow your head clean off. Ten out of ten - there are flaws here, but they are so over-matched by some heart-in-mouth moments and speeches, jokes and traumas that you cannot, and will not be disappointed. In a nutshell: everyone should be satisfied by this film, and some will quite quickly fall in love. I don't go and see a lot of films twice, but this will be one of them. Expand

The chemistry between the crew members is fantastic, bringing much more humor and warmth than we usually get to see from these type of movies. However it suffers from several problems, the 9 central characters from the series are just too many for a movie and for people not familiar with the TV series must have seemed very 2 dimensional. The other main issue is that it doesn't really work as Sci-Fi,some minor points are the solar system with numerous habitable planets/moons all with the same gravity (just doesn't make sense), the brightest planet (Miranda) is supposedly the furthest out, the location of Mr Universe's transmitter etc. but the single biggest issue is the Reavers, we're told there are only 30,000 of these essentially mindless zombies yet they are able to run starships and in the 6 or 7 years since their creation the Alliance military have been totally unable to deal with them. I absolutely loved "Firefly", its premise, writing and characters. Unfortunately "Serenity", which is a sequel of sorts to this series, does not measure up. The plot of the movie was remarkably predictable whereas the series always had you guessing, the villain was unremarkable and out of place, and the main character acted out of character when compared to the series. The big reveal felt unremarkable and contrived; I would have been far more interested in finding out about the Institute and its G-Man then about the origins of the Reavers. The movie also contains many plot threads that seem to go nowhere.

Sadly the series died when it was canceled and the attempt to revive it was just not successful. This film feels more like a generic action adventure flick than a continuation of the series. It is functional but just doesn't measure up to the rest of "Firefly".

I mean it's not as if I didn't enjoy the film for what it was, practically speaking. And it's also doubly not as if theatrically released movies should require an entire user-manual of information in order for audiences to fully enjoy them. So, in that regard, as far as sci-fi/western movies based on canceled sci-fi/western television series that I've never seen go, I most certainly think this one is the best. All kidding aside though, when one looks past the glaring CGI missteps and the handful of "if you watched the TV show, you would totally understand what they're talking about" moments littered throughout, it's still a worthwhile/entertaining film with an incredible amount of wit and creativity abound. Why is the teen market (at which this is obviously aimed) calculated to be so undiscerning? The story was derivative and muddled, and crucially lacked tension or suspense. The characters traded constantly in witless banter allegedly funny due to its sarcastic intonation (a peculiar mainstay of much modern American comedy). The direction was sloppy and generic; I often had little idea of what action was taking place due to shaky close-up camerawork and poor choreography. Chiwetel Ejiofor had at least some gravitas to his delivery, but could not rescue a script in desperate need of the bold clarity and dynamism of the old westerns from which its influences are obviously taken. Perhaps an accomplished director (this is Whedon's theatrical debut) might've brought more spark to the film and quite possibly could've seen better through the plot-holes (Whedon also wrote the script, which comes in a few notches better than his ALIEN: RESURRECTION draft), but the film is based on a 'little engine that could' TV show that refuses to accept 'it couldn't.'
