Despite some alluring cinematography and an all-star cast--including Matthew McConaughey--the film is far from alright, alright, alright.

His reply of 'except what the f*** is going on', is totally apt. Given an impressive trailer, that promises a different film, and two Oscar winning stars on board this should have at least been journeyman work. Unfortunately, it can't even be called a good bad film. It's just very bad. McConaughey is not the only one in the dark with regards to the silly and baffling plot. He, along with Anne Hathaway as a somewhat down trodden femme fatale give the worst performances of their careers egged on by the appalling screenplay. Matt mugs shamelessly and Anne is borderline hysterical throughout. One pities poor Diane Lane, usually so poised and elegant, but who here just manages to maintain a semblance of dignity by being mercifully underused. Probably the worst film you will see all year. You have been warned. Expand

A Compromise For Everyone.

Serenity

Knight's ultimate and evident thirst of contributing a jaw dropping thriller to the history of cinema, is admirable; he has attempted few other such genre concepts earlier too, his fascination over that one big moment won't allows him to hover around some other genre. But admiration can get you only so far, for on terms of merit, it wouldn't even qualify as a definite film, in its entirety. After that big horn blows and the curtain drops which Knights has clearly been excited about, the question of its existence starts raising up and piling up, what sounds like a mere discussion is fabricated into a provoking exotic thriller. I can understand the work that Knight poured into the storytelling, it is clearly visible, he has been mature about his secret, he doesn't leave it till the last moment, he attempts to pin down a metaphorical satire of being- among all other possible being- a human.

He has made sure that before the scrutiny hits big on screen, there are enough elements spread around to have a firm grip over his audience and enough quirkiness to make you sit back on your sit. Clearly, using all his guns directed towards these aspects, he lost the practicality among the world or the conversation which let's be honest film relies upon in its early stages. And not that these conversations are chalky but pretentious.

There is one thing to be aware of viewers' expectation on contradicting or questioning the plot and another to voluntarily be blatant about it; too much of anything, especially this, will spoil it. Armed by a brilliant cast, the performance comes off to be the most disappointing experience of all. With none whatsoever commitment or conviction on portraying such edgy characters does any cast comes off even slightly appreciative. Personally, I am amazed by the performance, from both Hathaway and McConaughey.

If these incredibly talented artists has given us some of the best work of their career, they have also managed to give us the worst, without holding back, now this is a range not everyone can cover. Whispering with a smooth voice throughout the film, no matter how irrelevant, McConaughey can and does own that body languages, but Hathaway desperately trying to join in the club, fails so vigorously, that it aches you to go someone through this.

The other supporting cast like Lane, Clarke and Hounsou are mere pawn of a narration that acts accordingly, like a flat rigid chess pieces with no urge to express. What's worse above all, is that we can clearly see what Knight was going for but how is it coming across like and him being not able to scoff off that difference is not at all affordable. Unfortunately, there is nothing to look back and pick out as even comparatively a better part of a film, no matter what we might think, soaking wet McConaughey doesn't count as one. Is there any serenity in Serenity, yes, it will end after an hour and a half, as opposed to what it may feel like.

What could go wrong?" A bad script, that's what. Why these two, not to mention Diane Lane - 3 of my favorites! - agreed to act in this ridiculous nonsense is anyone's guess. Do not waste your time on this movie. And to the actors I say - Next time, think before you sign. The one star I give is for the quality of the acting, which is as good as in any movie that has one of these actors or actresses in it. There is no fault on their part except for their bad judgment in accepting this project.

The movie starts with Matthew living on a Martha's Vineyard style island, obsessed with catching a certain fish. It's like Moby Dick but there is no reason given for his obsession. At first I thought the fish killed his son, but that turned out not to be the case. He simply had no motivation to be so possessed by this single-minded goal. It was literally the only thing that mattered to him in life, in addition to a little casual sex.

SPOILER BELOW - It's the only way to explain why the movie is so bad.

HERE COMES THE SPOILER

Don't read any further if you don't want the SPOILER.

IMMEDIATELY BELOW IS THE SPOILER

It turns out, he's obsessed with catching this fish because he is a character in a computer game about catching fish. A little boy is controlling him on his laptop. THIS IS NOT A PRANK. It's TRUE!!! Stay away, far far away, from this joke of a movie!!!

The film obviously builds up to something that it wants to surprise the audience with but it plays like an adjatation instead, like it expects the audience to know its grand reveal ahead of time. It's bad, and it hurts the film in ways most don't expect or want to admit to. The only positive mark on the film is the soundtrack, which, ironically enough, is full of serenity and plays out like a peaceful dream. Expand

Whatever the creators were thinking will only seem clear to those who think because something is ‘different’ it must be good – while sometimes this can be so, it’s not in this case. Here is an example of trying too hard to be ‘different’ and ending up simplistically off-the-wall, but not in a good way. Writer Stephen Knight won the day with ‘Amazing Grace’ 06, and seemed to perhaps be thinking he can blend some of the grand philosophy that graced that film into this concoction. Problem here is, the grotesque characters and situations are manipulatively designed to be so overly nasty as to make the viewer want to see the ‘baddy’ violently done in. That is never a good way to set up a convincing story but is very much a popular computer games scenario. This swear, booze and sex-fest wears thin very early on with its obvious attempt at outlandish ‘smart’ pretence – it may have been halfway interesting if they had played it straight - as it appeared to be at the outset. Initially looking much like a remake of the Hemmingway/Garfield 50s noir classic “The Breaking Point’ - it soon veers off-course into the now predictable land of Computer Game ‘magic’. It’s also unbecoming for mixing perverse situations involving an abused minor into a rather lame fantasy element. Some audiences will only see the supposed ‘cleverness’, while others will see straight through it! (as the box-office returns tend to confirm)

Matthew McConaughey can be impressive (Free State of Jones ’16) but also sometimes over the top (as here). Previously, he has also verbally praised God for his career, if he thinks God will look favourably on this mess, he needs to think again. The talented Diane Lane is sadly, totally wasted as his casual town ‘play’ piece. Cold-hearted ugly nonsense.

"A high-concept mystery with a twist, "Serenity" isn't what it appears to be at first -- unfortunately, it's also not anywhere near as clever or entertaining as it thinks": I could not have better summed up my opinion on the film.

Despite of quite interesting plot I couldn't stand this movie. Mainly due to obnoxious and annoing Matthew McConaughey. I could slap his face every minute of this movie. Well... if thats the creators idea its a double edged sword.
