I usually write a review only when my opinion drastically differentiates from what I find already contributed - when there's a dire need to tip the scale. And there is one here, to save this incredible film from the lynch mob.

This atmospheric dark period romance set in an unusual stage has a lot of human drama to offer. And this is what S. Bier is known at excelling. And pouring it on, which obviously irritates some part of the audience. But it is all done with a lot of taste for timing, with a good and fresh modern editing which disposes of most needless parts of the action and instead rather reserves that time for us to think about it all during the breaks of foggy Smoky Mountains scenery. (Obfuscation plays a leading role here, and this landscape couldn't be a better choice.)

Film is layered with appropriately somber music used/mixed with subtlety, and likewise it gorgeous photography has been wonderfully appreciated by the edit which understands its visual potential. This is one of those rare instances where a pattern of handheld closeups doesn't seem gratuitous, but does manage to bring us closer to the characters. Beside this being the result of the strong characters themselves, it is also a combination of a slower, not-frenetic pace, with a lot of static masters too.

While there might be some unbelievable decisions the characters make in this story, we need to remind ourselves that instead of treating this as a negative, these are the emotional extremes we should be welcoming, in an emotional rawness which needs appreciation. At the end, it is an emotional and symbolic theatre in which all the elements and symbols have and live to deliver their wonderfully intertwined meanings.

It's a boring sotry about a husband and wife who build their own logging industry and tell people to slave against it. That's it. Seriously, Rhys Ifans's Galloway is the worst character to be ever placed in a movie. Period. So, basically, it's 12 Years A Slave - OscarWorthy- Racism+ Brokeback Mountain- Gayness+ American Hustle- OscarWorthyness+ RazzieWorthy+ Cheesiness= Serena. That about sums it up. 0/10. Expand

Talking about a big backfire this movie was, I mean just wow.

The story is about (Bradley Cooper) and his fiercely independent, entrepreneurial-minded wife Serena (Jennifer Lawrence) following a devastating miscarriage. A woman who isn't afraid to speak her mind and relishes the opportunity for manual labor in the forest, the enigmatic Serena subsequently grows intensely jealous of the woman who previously bore her husband a son, and quickly begins to unravel over suspicions that Pemberton is sheltering his illegitimate family.

Okay every year you always get that early Oscar Buzz in about I don't know February or March, of films that are not even out yet but people predict it's going to be great just by some little photos or the 20 sec trailer for the film. Movies like Jersey Boys, Into the Woods and now this movie, which this was originally suppose to get a lot of Oscar Nominations, but when the reviews finally came in... it get's nothing and hey I won't blame them, this movie is god awful.

Serena is a depressing, not very well acted, lazily edited movie with some weak directing. The movie doesn't really hold my interest at times because I almost nodded off with boredom watching this movie, and I think it's the way the movie is written, it's not really well written at all. With scenes of dialogue that feel flat and been done before in much better films than this.

The thing that made my jaw dropped with shock of how bad it was in this movie is the editing, I mean my god this is some of the worst editing I've seen in years. It's so chopper and scenes that just go by so quick, if I was watching this movie and then I dropped something on the floor and while I'm getting it and sitting back up I would think I missed about 35 minutes of this movie, but no it's just the rush editing that's all.

The director of this movie Susanne Bier doesn't really look like she give a damn about this movie, because they are loads of scenes that are easy to spot has mistakes and she just overlooked them, and yes there are many directors out there that miss a lot of mistakes in their movies, but in this with the messy editing and the very poorly written script, how can you miss all that?.

Now dose this movie have it's good and I can yeah (Only some): The way the movie looks is actually pretty to look at and the cinematography is just spot on great. The sets as well looked like it to for ever and probably hours to put together and I give them that for trying, but doesn't change the fact that this is pretty awful movie.

Overall Serena has I said before feels like a big misfire of being something great and worthy of watching, but no.

An okayish drama which tells how everything can go wrong and turn out as a total trainwreck. You can miss the movie entirely if you are not a fan of Lawrence or Cooper, it's nothing to write home about.

i thought it was gonna suck and it did.....i almost like how the train fight scene sucked so bad.....jennifer lawrence thinks that making an ugly face and then a pretty face it good acting and i cant disprove that now.......bradley cooperi thought it was gonna suck and it did.....i almost like how the train fight scene sucked so bad.....jennifer lawrence thinks that making an ugly face and then a pretty face it good acting and i cant disprove that now.......bradley cooper shouldn't have been such a dick about the panther hunt is the underlying theme.......the fun facts of the movie is that now shes saying to Cooper that his past doesn't matter and in silver linings it was her past that wasn't supposed to matter......another fun fact is that Thats the second time that the guy has no hand in a movie......it woulds have been funny if the end had lawrence on the train that the ugly chick is on....I enjoyed watching the trees fall down and watching how cooper chose not murdering babies over sex......however how could a women ever be respected by a guy when all she did was save a foot of timber.... Serena doesn't work because Bradley cooper and Jennifer Lawrence do not have any chemistry also the plot is uninteresting and the dialogue has no effort put into it
Verdict:Would rather get punched in the balls.

Serena certainly didn't have the best dialogue, but I don't think the movie is terrible. It has a good plot, it has a wonderful cast (I think they should have known the characters better), but overall it's not bad. It has a good plot, it has a wonderful cast (I think they should have known the characters better), but overall it's not bad. They got Asheville and Waynesville right. My only real problem... why the hell didn't they film it here. Yes, I'm from Waynesville. And there are still plenty of places around here to get that 1929 vibe. I mean, part of "The Hunger Games" was filmed here, so Jennifer Lawrence knows our area. Authentic goes a long way. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Coming out of a time when the law ruled less than a man's conscience, and a poor man's wages were as valuable as were the trees that the ruling class wanted to protect, so we find George Pemberton and Serena. Together, they become a rock solid team: partners as much as lovers, to many men's guarded disapproval, especially that of Pemberton's old and dear friend, Buchanan, whose life proves to be the first chink in the couple's armor. The rather alluring and human aspects of this story, is about that armor, and what holds it together. Each character has their own personal ambitions and demons. In an opposing yet matrimonial way, they each resemble the other in this way. Pemberton learns of Serena's demons, full of death and ash, as he watches her ride a horse, looking totally alive and beautiful; Serena learns of George's demon the moment they step onto the North Carolina property, and a rather earthly, somewhat homely woman with a round belly is staring back at both of them. While their passions collide, there is a foreboding feeling that we, nor they, will ever get a glimpse of Brazil. This tale runs only as deep as the person watching it, that is, you must be in the right space to allow yourself to go down this road. Taking away from it that no matter how strong you make a bond, that same bond is as weak as the weakest link becomes (and hoping for recovery during the movie), but truly realizing in this that we all, ultimately will live, and die alone, with our very selves, meaning, our choices, our sins, our losses, our gains, and left to wonder which ones were worth the risk and which ones we should have risked more for... I thought of that as Pemberton watches the train holding his child move away from him, separating them eternally. Finding that narrative within while watching the movie will indeed make it all the richer an experience and leave you thoughtful afterward. If a movie can unnerve you a bit, of course you must be willing to allow that, then I'm sure the writer, directors, and actors would feel they have done well. If a movie can become a full discussion over an evening amongst family or friends that widens the scope to real questions about time, life, change, and where our weaknesses lie then it deserves to be commended. I forgot these were the same actor and actress from "Silver Linings Playbook" and "American Hustle" as well! Points off because despite its richness in those 109 minutes, it isn't a movie that I want to add to my permanent library as it is unnecessary to go back and watch again and again in order to find anything a second or third time, nor do I really care to visit those feelings, while very moving, again with the same movie. Serena is not a bad movie in its execution, unfortunately her melodrama feels too much created and processed becoming irrelevant and tedious.

Probably one of the most forgettable jobs in Cooper and Lawerence's career

Many people seem to dislike this movie but I actually really enjoyed it. The characters and story line are well written in my opinion and the actors are incredible too.
