Not very innovative, as well as not that bad.

Like the previous year, the 2015 was also considered the year of sci-fi in the film world. Plenty of large and small scale flicks came out and among them I was eagerly waiting for this one. IfNot very innovative, as well as not that bad.

Like the previous year, the 2015 was also considered the year of sci-fi in the film world. Plenty of large and small scale flicks came out and among them I was eagerly waiting for this one. If the story is what you always prefer with a fine production quality, then this film won't disappoint you. The performances were also well supported. Then what was this film's issue?

The last time widely accepted movie by Tarsem Singh was when he engaged in the screenplay development. After that he did not see much success where all his directed ones were written by others. My perception is that he must do those both department where he's good at it. Take this film as an example, an awesome story and had a good cast, but the writing was let down according to many who saw it.

Even in the short period of appearance, Ben Kingsley's role's legacy carried out till the end, because the concept was designed like that way. Being one of the top actors, Ryan Reylands films are not that celebratable. Though he's doing a decent flicks often and those were failing to recognise in the higher level, which did not spare this one as well.

People are comparing it to 'Face/off', but to me it looked more like coming together of 'The Island' and 'Skeleton Key'. Whatever it is I had a good time. Not a fresh concept of an idea, but narrated differently and it needed a bit depth in showcasing everything in the film.

My formula/secret for watching a movie successfully even it considered as an average or worse is, I won't bother for all the departments come together to become a well crafted product like the critics expect, because I'm a movie fanatic and love watching them almost most of the time than arguing about its flawed contents. If I find anything solely interesting like acting, music, story, visuals, I respect the efforts. So do I to this one and believe me it is much better than what the critics say so.

I don't understand the critics. They're probably the type of movie goers who think that all sci-fi should be like star wars. Sure this movie has some flaws and somethings don't make complete sense. But it is a well acted and a well thought out movie.

As the film begins, icy real-estate magnate Damian (Ben Kingsley) is diagnosed with cancer and facing the end of his life, beset by fear and regret. As the film begins, icy real-estate magnate Damian (Ben Kingsley) is diagnosed with cancer and facing the end of his life, beset by fear and regret. Out of desperation, he agrees to a highly expensive and unlawful medical procedure developed by an enigmatic scientist (Matthew Goode, exuding very British malevolence). The treatment involves the transfer of his mind into a youthful and reportedly laboratory-grown new body (Ryan Reynolds). At first, Damian enjoys his extended lease on life and renewed vigor, but disorienting, opaque memories he cannot identify lead him to investigate the true origin of his new form. To be honest, this film does not cover much ground as a piece of cerebral and/or psychedelic speculative fiction, a fact which may dispirit viewers since it is by Tarsem Singh, a music-video veteran and the director of such stylish cult favorites as The Cell and The Fall. The first-act cognitive switch is utilized as a plot-inciting device, à la the wrong-man dubiety in North by Northwest or amnesia in The Bourne Identity, rather than an invitation to travel inside the human mind and explore its contradictory, ever-shifting complexity. And though both are in fine form, Kingsley (featured only briefly) and Reynolds do almost nothing to emulate one another, not even in the early scenes in which Damian undergoes physical therapy to become comfortable inside his just-purchased figure. No trace of the elder English actor's fierce, guarded, stern turn can be found in Reynolds' instantly more charismatic and relaxed performance. However, its shortcomings as science fiction notwithstanding, Self/less is a very well-executed action film. A certain one-man-against-a-deadly-conspiracy tension builds at a steady and involving pace, and twists and turns are well-placed throughout. The plentiful sequences of chasing and fighting are staged with spacial clarity and laced with a modest-but-still-recognizable amount of Singh's characteristic visual whimsy. One key scene, for instance, unfolds in an out-of-the-way industrial field of discarded, decaying Mardi Gras floats and props. There is also a grounded and low-key charm to the film's set pieces, perhaps because it is a comparatively inexpensive studio release, particularly at this time of year. It entirely eschews ultra-over-the-top, physics-defying computer-generated wizardry. So, Self/less may bend one's mind only slightly, but it does raise the pulse and warmly satisfy as an escapist summertime jaunt.… Expand

Surprisingly good sci-fi flick that was hated by the critics. It's an action movie, and that's one of the main thing that the critics missed. It's actually a meaningful one at that. I think the critics expected something much more 'cerebral'?

Surprisingly good. Don't expect something like all those really goofy movies where two people swap personalities due to some fairy tale, this is actually a pretty unique take in this sic-fi genre. There are subtle parallels to a 2005 film TheSurprisingly good. Wow, the critics were really harsh on this one. I came expecting the worst and came out utterly confused by how good the movie was. Matter of fact, I don't think the "critics" watched the same movie I did. Self/Less is an amazing movie not only 'cause of its intriguing premise, but also 'cause of the realism it exudes. An enjoyable sci-fi action film, even though it doesn't really bring anything new to the table. Also, I was a little puzzled by the aggressiveness of the company's militia, given that they were supposedly keeping a low profile.

Sir Kingsley is brilliant, as in most of his cinematographic exploits - he acts astoundingly! His ability to embrace any type of screenplay is overwhelming... a true living icon alongside not so many others still performing - Christopher Plummer, Robert Duvall, Al Pacino... The movie rests upon his shoulders, basically. Winner of An Academy Award for his grand performance in Ghandi, he proves himself, over and over, worthy of our praise. This role demonstrates his juggling skills with fictional storyline. All in all, for me he is a living legend. Congrats for costume design, photography and editing. All in all, what starts as a negative character, turns to do outright for the family of the 'donor'.… Expand

This wasn't too bad considering the theme has been done countless times before with films like "Total Recall", "Freejack" and "Face/Off"; that last one even contributing the idea of two non-related words to assume some semblance of meaning for a movie title. Still, there were some problems with the execution that the film makers decided to gloss over relative to the plot. I didn't think Ben Kingsley conveyed the idea that Damian Hale had only six months to live since he looked pretty healthy to me aside from those coughing spasms of his. And why 'Mark' became a transfer body was never made clear. His background in the military was alluded to, and he was obviously selected by Jensen/Albright (Matthew Goode) as a subject devoid of serious imperfections. There was also the scene where Damian's friend Martin (Victor Garber) expressed his doubt about Damian occupying a new identity until it was verified by describing their first business deal together. But Martin already knew such a procedure was possible because he had a replacement son via the same 'shedding' method. He could have been playing dumb but it didn't come across that way. What was gratifying was Damian's decision to cease taking the red pill in order for Mark to resume life with his reunited family. That selfless (ahh, there it is!) act reminded me of yet another story harking all the way back to my childhood days watching Rod Serling's 'Twilight Zone'. In 'The Trade-Ins' an elderly gentleman gave up his chance for a younger body when his finances didn't allow the same procedure for his wife, thereby accepting the inevitability of death at some point in the future. When faced with a tough choice, it's commendable to see a noble decision being made.… Expand

So if you don't overthink the conceit you have a better chance at deriving some pleasure from the ride. "Self/Less" is decent enough, it doesn't waste your time, though you'll want to keep your finger on the FF button for gratuitous scenes, drawn out scenes, and the several car chases. But don't skip over any of the exposition scenes because that's where the nuggets to this film lie.… Expand

It's a neat idea that never gels. My dislike for this pictures stems from my total lack of empathy for the protagonist. I mean, he showed no indication in his "other life" that he was anything but a selfish, take-no-prisonersMeh.

I mean, he showed no indication in his "other life" that he was anything but a selfish, take-no-prisoners businessman who would ruin someone's life because he felt insulted. That's all fine and good. He made his choices and was the man he was. He was not, however, the curious and "selfless" individual who emerged later in the picture.

Overall it's a passable excuse for a shoot-em-up action thing but it's not compelling.… Expand

Self/less is a movie that might share pieces of plot with other films but I wasn’t expecting the film to be strong and I was right. Self/less really doesn’t screw around and you don’t have to wait for the story to get underway and the first half of the story is the best part of the film.

I’m never sure of Ryan Reynolds but I would say that he did a pretty good job here. He really was the right man to chose for this type of film but it just wasn’t executed right. I think that this guy could easily be a movie star for years to come but he just has make better choices. He is constantly getting stuck in mediocre films.

The major problem with Self/less is that is makes such little use of the creative premise. Rather than crafting a interesting thriller out of this premise this film became nothing more than a really lame sci-fi action movie and even the action was a disappointment. The film runs about 20 minutes too long and the film was also achingly predictable which I was not expecting after watching the trailer that promised a mind binding film.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So.. the plot to selfless is pretty out there! MASSIVE SPOILERS:
A company basically buys poor people, kind of kills them, then a rich guy comes along to buy their body to live in, now in the new body they take pills to slowly kill off the host and kind of wear their host's body as a weird meat suit kind of thing and live out a new life. The main character finds all this out after his 'swap' (with who just so happens to be a highly trained soldier) then decides to take down this evil corporation. While this is all kicking off he's also met the 'donor's' wife and daughter, kinda likes it all and is struggling whether to let himself die and let the donor retake their own body back or to live on and kill his donor person, probably stealing his wife too as he kind of likes her. He also didn't do a very good job of raising his own daughter and wants to have another crack at doing it right, so wants to basically rob this poor guy's family as well as his body.. Okayy.. yeah. Not the greatest of films!… Expand

The story of a man who buys a new body when his is on the way out makes for a good starting point and the first 30 minutes are intriguing and well made, but then the audience suddenly finds it is one step ahead of all the characters, and we remain that way throughout the film. No matter what twists and turns the film throws at us, they are so well signposted that nothing comes as a surprise and in the end boredom starts to set in. The most disappointing aspect of the film, however, is its visual style. Director Tarsem Singh has made some of the most beautiful looking films of the last few years (Immortals, Cell, The Fall) but Self/Less just looks, well, ordinary. And that's unforgivable.… Expand

But, the film is a soap opera on drugs, Reynolds's pathetic character doesn't add anything to the mix, they didn't show Ben Kingsley much and the movie has some of the most ridiculous writing I have seen in any summer blockbuster. Singh ultimately puts a major illusion on his film, I can't say that I liked it, but I can say that I had some fun with it. It's well shot, colourful and very edgy. I still don't know if I could recommend it though.… Expand

Le film vire également rapidement à la machination hollywoodienne usée et rabâchée, au thriller complotiste fait de bagarres, de coups de feu et de fuites... Il est aussi bavard, du genre pour ne rien dire ou s'écouter parler afin de meubler au maximum le métrage qui n'a rien sous le pied en fait.

Certes, on aime bien retrouver Ben Kingsley, un acteur éminent et estimable mais il ne fait ici qu'un gros quart d'heure syndical avant de laisser la place à un Ryan Reynolds en roue libre, l'air plus ahuri qu'autre chose. Finalement, rien à garder, tout à jeter dans ce film foutraque qui brasse du vent... et encore sans aucune conviction.… Expand

While the concept isn't the most original, the pseudo-realistic universe that was created could have been utilized better if the creators tried to make it bigger. Ryan Reynolds was able to play his character very well, but wasn't able to shine through it because of how bland of dialogue the writers gave him. This movie made me feel average after leaving the theatre and I almost forgot that I had seen it. The main reason I am giving this a 5 over a 4 is because of the soundtrack: the drum-and-bass esque beats accompanied by smooth, swallowing guitar sounds give the movie a great atmosphere. I'd recommend seeing it on Netflix at least once, but nothing more than that.… Expand

With a strong cast in Ben Kingsley and Ryan Reynolds leading, it never really gets fully going to hit its very interesting concept and unfortunate predictable ending. The actings fine but there's only so much they can do with what they've gotWith a strong cast in Ben Kingsley and Ryan Reynolds leading, it never really gets fully going to hit its very interesting concept and unfortunate predictable ending. The actings fine but there's only so much they can do with what they've got to work with. With no spoilers I can't say too much as too why it's slow and predictable but I feel with different direction and some more of a budget this film could've been pretty good and certainly entertaining. Shame really as the storyline and ideas are there along with the cast… Expand
