This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Why doesn't everyone love this movie? It is my second favourite Wright movie, and it is so good. Although it might not live up to the cornetto trilogy, and even on a bad day Baby driver, it is still amazing. The cast is hilarious, Kieran Culkin being an especially funny addition. The cinematography is spectacular, blending the real world and the dreams inside Scott's head together in such a way so amazing that it is hard to believe. Some of the effects may have aged poorly in retrospect, but the majority of them are still very impressive. What many point to as the biggest problem is that it lacks the same heart that made the graphic novels it was based on so popular. And although the novels may have a better and more experimental story, the movie makes up for this by not only being more funny than the novels ever were, but also giving off the impression this all might just be one person heavily altered perspective on the world around him. The ending might be a little muddled, probably owing to the somewhat rushed production, but the impression I left the theatre with wasn't on of regret over what the movie might have been, but rather one of happiness over such an hilarious and heartwarming and awesome story could even exist in the medium of Hollywood film. This was a completely transcendent experience, one that I will have many times in the future as well. Expand

The story begins in the land of Toronto, Canada where we are introduced to Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) and his band mates, Steven Stills (Mark Webber), Kim Pines (Mark Webber), and Young Neil (Simmons), who start to drill him about his love life, because he reveals that he is dating Knives chou, a highschooler. Scott and Knives have a very awkward relationship. Scott is not the most successful adult, he lives with his friend Wallas, and does not have a job. Scott goes on a “date” with Knives to the library, and sees a girl from his dreams, Ramona flowers. Scott instantly falls in love with Ramona and asks her on a date when he sees her at his doorstep while delivering a package. They have a great date, but on the backside he is still dating knives because he doesnt wanna break her heart. So in a climax of events he invites both Ramona and Knives to his concert. It goes well and he doesn't have any incidents until the ceiling breaks down, and here comes Mathew Pattel, Ramona's first evil ex. Scott fights Mathew and comes out on top but learns he must fight Ramonas other evil exes. This film is not just good in quality but has many fun facts as well. This film has won multiple awards such as Empire Award for Best Director, Motion Picture Comedy/Musical, and Satellite Award for Best Actor - Motion Picture Musical or Comedy. Did you know that this movie is based off of a set of graphic novels, and the movie was finished before they were! The ending of the movie, which is very good, was made up completely by the screenwriter. It has songs from many different bands, including the rolling stones. Last but not least the game has a video game based on it, its very hard as i have played it myself, but it is a fun rewarding side scrolling beat em up. I think this is a very good movie, it's my favorite of all time after all. The film covers tough topics like abuse and how to handle having a bad past. The characters overcome this though and give strength to any viewers who are struggling with similar issues. The talented cast and the very talented director give this movie some wacky flare, with its comic book style. It has a special place in mine and many peoples heart for the enriching story and deep meaning to all 112 of its minutes. Expand

I just read the comics about 2 weeks before seeing this movie. I must say, this movie does what Watchmen accomplished for me: provide a fantastic representation of the characters and stories while still being able to tweak the experience for regular audiences to understand. Thoroughly hilarious and beautiful. Now why would I not give it a 10? Despite its closeness to the source material, I personally felt that after the defeat of Evil Ex #3, the connectivity to the other Ex's was sped through very quickly, especially the Katayagi Bros scene. The fight scene itself was pretty awesome, considering it was another chance for the audience to get a piece of audio pleasure with the band, but they never really got too in depth into the Ex's. Other than this fact, taking out many of the minor characters was definitely understandable. In the end, I left the theater with a smile on my face which is what I really wanted.

Also is this not Gen-X anymore? I mean, I'm as old as most of the main characters...and I grew up in the 90's. I'd rather not be Gen-Y >.>

The cast was great, the video game and pop-culture references were funny and fit the story (and style) well, and overall it was one of the most enjoyable movies of the summer. I haven't seen a movie that quite grasps both video game and comic book aesthetics as well as Scott Pilgrim, and it marks yet another great movie from director Edgar Wright. You often get heavily marketed films telling you that critics say it's an important film, or it's amazing, or any number of snobby film critic words. This was just a great time. I've long since given up on rating films based on how "great" of a film they are and concentrate on how much I am entertained. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is extremely entertaining and the only reason I didn't give it a 10 is that very few films should ever be rated at the extreme ends of the scale.

This movie was a blast from the opening Universal Pictures (in 8-bit) screen and fanfare, through all the video game and pop culture references all the way to the "boss fight". It's highly enjoyable and even my wife enjoyed it thoroughly.

With what appears to be Pokemon-style battle scenes and captions, along with character titles and colourful cinematography, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World should have it's own category of awesomeness. It's retro, with a rocking soundtrack and the occasional sound effect you should all know if you were in the Super Mario World generation.

It's geek-chic appeal means that the women going to watch this film will be falling at Michael Cera's feet. Cera always pulls off the role of an indie geek boy well, but in this film he has almost matured a little, as he has move away from home and has his own band, but the way he acts around girls brings out that hesitant and clumsy character we all love. His ability to fight was amazing (even if he runs a bit funny); he isn't your typical superhero, he's just trying to win the thing he wants the most, in this case Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead). You may not think you've seen her in the acting world much, but she played Lucy McClane in Die Hard 4, and I think she has some strong potential to take up more female leads in the future.

Her hard-to-get but charming personality makes her all the more appealing, and you can begin to understand why she has seven ex's. The only thing I felt that could have gone wrong in this film is the fact we as an audience know Pilgrim must defeat seven people, and then what? A happy ending? I am pleased to say it wasn't that straight forward. There are a mixture of characters, such as Scott's obsessive girlfriend Knives Chau (Ellen Wong) and his gay house mate Wallace Wells (Kieran Culkin) who are full of witty one liners. It was even easy to connect with non-enthusiast Kim (Alison Pill).

By the end of the film there is a lesson learned and underneath is just your typical story of a heartbreaking boy just trying not to hurt anyone. He could easily be your best friend, because the relationship problems he goes through is something we can all relate to. Director Edgar Wright has made this film genuinely funny, but we shouldn't expect any less from the man who also directed Shaun of the Dead (2004). I would say this film is aimed at the teenage generation more than anyone else, it's not something I can imagine my parents going to see because you really have to appreciate the comic elements they've integrated.

The unrealistic fighting really worked in adding a great deal of comedy to the story.
The characters themselves were loveable and each one added a great deal to the film. It even had a moral to the story which was to be true to your heart, fight for love for yourself and you'll be far more respected and never forget the true meaning of life. Which is to date someone who makes you happy because in the end being happy is all that matters in this world.

On the front of it an Adventure, Romance, Action, Comedy, Fantasy film sounds like its trying to be too much too all things, but this is not the case, its a clever witty film which is classy slick and a very polished comic book to movie transition probably one of the best in that genre. It has the subtle British comedy which is becoming a trademark of all of Edgar Wright's films and he must be one of the best current modern directors. The subtle nuance's and all the links to other films just add to it and it never seems to be ripping anyone off. Its also a great bow in Cera's filmography as its a slightly different role to what he seems to be getting typecast into.

In short if you like glitzy, glamourous gaming films which are also clever and witty bringing something which hollywood normally cannot deliver then this is for you

Who knew Michael Cera still had it in him to crack jokes that can still make the audience laugh. I was able to attend a sneak preview with a packed crowd. One of my friends that went with me was expecting the movie to be a complete waste of time, but after he was blown away and wanted to see it again. Everyone in the theater was cracking up and even making those "OHHHH" sounds whenever Cera would land a great punch or a (surprisingly awesome) fight scene would occur.
Edgar Wright still owns the gift of making amazing movies. I think he could make a Care Bears movie and it would not disappoint whatsoever. See this movie.
PS- The only reason I gave it a 9 was because I wished the monster fight scene would've lasted just a few minutes longer, because that scene will just blow you away.

With Scott Pilgrim having to defeat Ramona's seven evil ex's before they can date, which in the movie we only see him fight 3 or 4, and Michael Cera's always playing the same role which is a shy person and never says what's really on his mind, fits the role quite perfectly. It definitely is super light on the romance, which in way makes the movie even better. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is definitely one of the funniest comedies in a long time, or as in the tagline "An epic of epic epicness". Expand

Creative, witty, and visually striking. Scott Pilgrim is a blast to watch and I picked up even more subtle jokes and pop culture references hiding within scenery in the second viewing. Maybe the best comedy of 2010?

I love this movie so much, that I felt like I needed to write publicly about it! Where do I begin?

This film is a personal favorite; never in cinema history have I ever felt so connected to a character, nor his friends, nor the world (though, with much more graphics) than with Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. Such a vibrant and colorful world this film creates, filled with music, and emotions, conflict, love and friendship. Oh, and tons of humor! For me, this film perfectly depicts an exaggerated version of the kind of culture and reality I found myself in at the end of high school and throughout college, which is why I love this movie so much!
On a technical side, this movie has some of the best transitions, use of lighting, and motion GFX that I have yet seen! Everything is so fun and energetic; every action pops off of the screen like a drawing from the comic books. Definitely a movie that will stay in my lists of favorites for life! I hope to one day show this to my future kids when they're heading off to college. It depicts a world where men are the eccentric emotional beings, struggling to accept responsibility for the wrongs they have committed in the 20-something relationships they were involved with, while the women are the ones who are emotionally collected if not stoic (Kim and Ramona, primarily). This film is such a direct tap onto what culture I come from, and live in, and love, and I don't think there will ever be a film like this one again!

Edgar Wright captures such an essence of creativity and all out ridiculousness to bring us Michael Cera in this super-comic tween fest all together and rolled in with flashy colours and glitz to form Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.
Michael Cera plays the titled character, who is part of a mediocre college band trying to make it, he happens across Ramona, a beautiful and pink-hair coloured girl, who he falls for, the problem being that she has seven evil 'exes' who Scott must defeat in order to have the girl of his dreams.
Obviously, the events that occur are not as straightforward as Scott would have hoped. What is striking about this film is how Edgar Wright is not afraid to take a chance and go in all guns-blazing, trowing a nerd-fest party that only the geekiest kids are allowed access to, because this is an all-out comic and game oriented film that has onomatopoeic graphics flashing in front of your face and OCD fast paced directing that will have your brain buzzed. Its what makes this wonderful rollercoaster of a comic book adaption so unique, it won't try too hard to amaze, but simply to entertain in an eccentric and brilliant manner.
It's has great comedic acting all round, particularly a cameo from Chris Evans.
It doesn't get a 10 though, because Michael Cera is perhaps becoming very typecast in these roles, not by any means the film he is in, but his personality doesn't change, the same routine here of the nervous teen who lands the beautiful female lead, perhaps just becoming too predictable, apart from this, an throughly enjoyable film.

You're damn right it is, but you know what? So are most of the other movies that Edgar Wright directed, and those were all awesome. This, my friends, is another one of his masterpieces, sure to make you laugh uncontrollably for at least five minutes.

To best describe this movie is to call it crazy awesome. The fights are crazy awesome, the way the characters act is crazy awesome, the special effects are crazy awesome, the fact that it takes place in Canada is crazy awesome (Yeah, I'm saying that and I'm Canadian. Sue me). Reuben Langdon making a cameo is crazy awesome. All the references to Zelda, Street Fighter, and Mario are crazy awesome. Good God, is this movie crazy awesome!!! ...you know what's not crazy awesome? The fact that this movie got trampled in the box office by Vampires Suck! That is just disgusting!

Was there anything I didn't like? Well...yes. While I do think Michael Cera did a good job as Scott, I can't help but think that he wasn't the best choice for the role. Maybe that's just me, though. After reading the comics, I also get the feeling that the movie would have been way better had they included just one or two others plot pieces. On that note, this movie felt way too short, but given how much I was enjoying it, it could be longer than all of the Lord of the Rings movies slammed together and I wouldn't care.

Is this movie stupid? Man, you have no idea. Is it for everyone? Absolutely not (hell, my dad thinks it's dumber than Blades of Glory), but for the rest of us? To conclude, let me just say that...well, I'm in lesbians with this movie, and if you have the right mindset when you sit down to watch it, you will be too.

Usually i'm sceptical if it's about comic book adaptations, unless it's Marvel/DC Comics, because most of the time the movies try to be to Hollywood like. Not this movie. Wright managed to keep every important piece of the comic and turned it into a perfect movie.

The only reason i'm not giving it a 10, is that although i find it a masterpiece, I understand if the common teenager or adult don't get the references etc. without them the movie is probably just a mere meh (5).

The movie does have a bunch of aspect in different ways that entretain you, not just because it is really good, but because is a completely different kind of work that isn't usual at all. First i would like to talk about the sounds in the movie, it is mastered perfectly, like the sounds fit and combine with what is happening during the scene, it is so enjoyable and natural at the same time, the director did some tricks in transitions in scene to scene that is just phenomenal. The visual of the movie is another factor that makes this movie so iconic and unique, it does apply some video game hud, putting life, combos counting, the pose of fight games, that is so great.
The acting for me was perfect, Michael Cera was the perfect casting for this character, he really is a big nerd and like his character he naturally pass all of the insecurity and charisma that the character should, you totally connect and cheers for him. Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Ramona Flowers may be the best character in the movie, she had a nice arc and she totally delievers it with the nonsense aspects of the movie.
The supporting actors are all great, every single member of the legion of evil have some personality stereotyped and are all interesting and fun, the gay friend did a great job, so as her first girlfired and his hole band, everyone did a nice job in here, and definely is a good example of way this movie worked.
The story is another unbelievable aspect of the movie and make this movie even more great. Is basically a guy that nerds can relate a lot, he have a girlfriend and a difficult situation with girls in the past. He finds another girl and desperately wants to date her, and for do this, he needs to fight and defeat all of her 7 ex boyfriends. He literally fight in a completely poetic license way, it is so great, Wright creativity during the most part of those battles is just unthinkable and surprises you all the time with some crazy and creative decisions. The story isn't bad and it does make sense, but the movie doesn't take itself seriously, so it is not a problem at all the nonsense stuff that happens.
I like how the movie does a lot of little critics on the society, mainly during the dialogues of the battle, and isn't scary to go off in these, you can see a bunch of moments as a big metaphor into some real thing. Another thing that it is very interesting, is that you can take for your life, Ramona Flowers character is aprisioned by her past, it is impessing her to go and improve in her life, and needs to fight it to move on. In Ramona case was her relationships, but could be anything else in some real life person. She always disappear of the places to run away from her past, for guilty. She does have a duality, that starts even with her name. Like in a video-game, we pass throw levels, second, third chances are given to us all the time, even when a game over seems to happen, they teach that to us. I love how the movie says that you need to understand you and respect yourself, it is told with metaphors and, for me, it was great.
The comedy of the movie is on point, Michael Cera character have such of a unique personality but at the same time you can see him in a bunch of people and probably in you. All aspects help in the comedy, the sounds, the cinematography and everything, surely you will laugh a lot watching it.
It uses aesthetically interesting shooting angles, using various screen formats during projection to portray narrative elements such as the scope of battles or the solitude of the characters. In turn, one uses the visual versatility of the director to play with the extremes that involve the coloring of the world of the long.
I believe that something that could have been a little bit better, are the action scenes, after the half of the movie during some fight scenes i saw myself distracted and not very into what was going on, maybe tooked to long to solve some fights, it may disconnect you from the movie during some minutes.
This movie is just great, it is unique and you have probably have seen really few things with more personality and more courage than this movie, it does have unique sounds asepcts, visuals and a great montage. You will laugh with the creativity of the director and the lines plus other aspects well connected and a nonsense metaphorical story that teachs some nice stuff.

As my pal KK mentioned after the film, unlike directors of many action films, Wright made the contests less a "blur" of violence and more a very linear, easy-to-follow experience that is artful and interesting. The women in the film are uniformly excellent - except for Knives - I could have used less of her fawning. I would definitely recommend seeing the film, especially if you enjoyed Hot Fuzz or Sean of the Dead. Expand

This movie is like what "The Wedding Singer" was to people in their late 20's early 30's in 1998, GREAT!!!, because you were there, you understand the jokes fully.

After reading the poor reviews of this movie, I can understand why some users have reviewed so poorly, simply put they're too young, there is in-joke referencing to things they're not old enough to understand, TV shows, video games, music, fashion, comics, both from the 80's and 90's, so if you're 18, you won't get all the references. This movie, plainly put is escapist fun, and in my opinion better than "Shaun Of The Dead".
The references to Street Fighter & Mortal Kombat, Adam West's Batman with the Ka-pow, Blam!, this is a throwback to kids who grew up in the 80's watching kids TV before the explosion of TMNT, who played Mario Bros. religiously, and then in the 90's had the luck to catch the grunge era both in music and fashion of which the style of the time was No Logo's.
Edgar Wright hit everything in this movie right on the head, even down to his casting of Michael Cera and Jason Schwartzman, poetic, like a handing over of the mantle. Second best movie I've seen this year behind Inception.

For a movie that manages to be nerdy, trendy, absurd, hipster and even touching, the pacing and editing are spot on, and Michael Cera's deadpan will be sure make you laugh this time around (even the milieu of savvy video game/indie jokes should at least entertain the unfamiliar). The setting is also perfect - the overblown story takes place in modest Toronto, though a Toronto where no one breaks the age 30 barrier and high school seems eons away. I'm a bit worried this direct exclusion of age groups is a factor that will deter a large portion of the movie-going crowd. For that certain demographic, though, this movie is the perfect remedy for boredom and is a great cap-off to the summer. Expand

A unique and imaginative teen fantasy / comedy. Really very slick editing and visuals, and a great young cast.

Edgar Wright's first Hollywood picture is a fun, frenetic movie experience. Aided by a superb cast, good music, and terrifically insane visuals and sound design, this is a unique comic-book movie for 2010, only bettered by the superior Kick Ass.

A fun time for everyone, and it will bring back old video game and comic book memories for adults. A hilarious film that may end on a low note, but the movie itself is a huge high note!

Truly imaginative direction, funny and quirky dialogues and if it was not for the over the top ending it would be a brilliant film indeed. Great casting and music add to the attraction of the final product.

There's always that princess we need to rescue and there are those baddies we need to defeat. And you know, it couldn't have been better said than with "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" This movie is awesome. Epic, even. (mind the Snagglepuss comment). What I think makes this movie work is that they portray this entire film like a video game, right from the opening "Universal" shot performed in 8-bit. I mean it, they do the music Nintendo style. That I found to be funny. The movie starts off with Michael Cera as Scott Pilgrim, even though he's playing him like Michael Cera. I'm not his biggest fan since he's played the same character in every movie from "Superbad" to "Juno". Yet, despite this, this is his best role. He's still the meek geek, but he grows a pair and kicks ass. Anyway, he's the bassist of an indie band called "Sex Bob-omb" (just work with me) who's currently dating a 17-year old high schooler named Knives. However, they put everything in a cross between video-game and comic book aesthetic. Anyway, while they're dating, he meets Ramona, who's sort of an indie Princess Peach. She was a damsel in distress without really being so much as a damsel in distress. Anyway, word goes out that they're going out, and now Scott has to fight her seven ex's, which is used as an implication gag as Michael Cera keeps thinking she meant ex-boyfriends. (Let's just say she was curious.) Anyway, he fights them, and every time they're defeated, they turn into coins and add up points like an arcade game. As the movie goes on, it turns out that Ramona isn't the only person with evil ex's. Scott has some of his own, and they keep coming back to his life. You have a rock queen who sort of looks like Renee Zellweger, a sarcastic ginger who's the drummer in his band, of course Knives (but she's not really evil), and I don't know if she is an ex but the sarcastic girl from "Funny People". But Scott doesn't fight them, he must fight Ramona's, which range from rock stars to ninja queens. My favorite evil ex had to be Chris Evans, who plays a skateboarder-turned-actor. He just played his character in such an awesome light that he even makes him talk like Clint Eastwood. My least favorite is probably the vegan one, who tries to tie not eating more than just meat to being awesome. Yeah, PETA's not high on my list, but oh well. The best part about this whole movie are the video-game style fight scenes. You actually have the Street Fighter "vs." in the middle of the two, and everything is as over the top as a video game. In fact, I saw this movie to be a "Super Mario Street Fighter" sort of thing. Scott had to fight five guys and a girl (much like the Koopas, which also one was female) in a form of Mortal Kombat. Heck, they even did a cat fight like Mortal Kombat with a giant mallet. I'm not joking: Ramona pulls a giant war hammer out of her purse. But my favorite part of the movie also dealt with my least favorite ex: Scott Pilgrim challenges him to a bass battle. YES. A BASS BATTLE. As a bassist, my mind was blown. In fact, the music was also pretty cool. If you were to take away the video game look and feel, it would be a romantic comedy...probably without the comedy. So it'd be like everything else. So kudos to the director for giving us something with which we're familiar and telling it to us in a way we've never heard it. What I didn't like is how incredibly ridiculous certain things were, even for a pseudo-video game. There's this one evil ex who makes a big deal about being a vegan that when he drinks a coffee with half-and-half, two cops of vegans take his powers out of nowhere. Out. of. nowhere. In the end, he faces Bowser: Ramona's evil ex Jason Schwartzman. I won't tell you what happens, but the second chance card gets played like only a video game would. He doesn't have much other than he's the head of a record label, but who cares? He's the final boss. Since I never read the graphic novels, I really don't know much about the source material, but from what I do know it seems like the movie's faithful, so if the novel is as epic as the movie was I'll consider reading it. Bottom line: this film is awesome. It's fun, funny, great editing, cinematography, a bit ridiculous at times, but it's a video game worth playing, and you're always rooting for the hero. Expand

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is quite a odd, funny, and likable movie, with references to video games, and likable characters (except Ramona she was annoying), this a great movie with only a few design choices holding it back from all it could be.

If you grew up in the 90's this movie probably carries a lot more meaning and humor, but I can see this appealing to anyone. You can't really pin the label comedy on it either, the movie really contains humor, drama, and action. The video game theme really ties the whole movie together, it moves fast, its really flashy, you can really sympathize with the characters, and by the end you feel like you've gained something. Very few films 2000-2010 are this inventive and break the mold as much as this film did. This is the first movie i've genuinely enjoyed A LOT in a year or so. highly recommend to anyone Expand
