The whole spy thing with the non-stop action and several escapes was a bit cheesy but good still. I'd say the movie is quite underrated and a solid action movie, especially if you want to see an action heroine.

The infiltration scene with the white house bunker was well orchastrated along with the music. This big piece of the movie felt grand. It goes a bit over the top most of the other time however the way she constantly evades and escapes from everyone, but still a lot more realistic than Ultraviolet. I haven't seen too many of Angelina Jolie's movies in full but I think this one is one of her best movies she starred in despite the lower ratings on this.

Yes again she plays the gun toting, attitude laden main character who's out on a mission and in this case, the mission is rather perilous and we're treated to plenty of gunfights and a good few car chase scenes, which tend to go down well in my book and sure enough, as far as the action was concerned, I certainly found it quite entertaining.

Onto the plot and this is, fairly obviously, where the movie falls down. Its the old US vs Russia 'game' with suspicions of there being a mole (or two) in the CIA, it reminded me of a series of the TV show 24, only the movie was a heck of a lot shorter than that (which is probably just as well, that show was kind of 'bled to death' so to speak, which was a shame) - I felt that the story smacked of paranoia overall though and it really didn't seem very original to me. Having said that, the movie is mostly a basic action movie I suppose and as far as watching it to be entertained, for the visual effects, gunfights and fast moving car/bike (plus a lorry or two!) scenes, its pretty good. I felt that the story was confusing at the start, as a viewer I was a bit confused about Evelyn's motives, although that was almost certainly done on purpose to peak our interests to find out more about her, I found it more annoyingly confusing than anything else, I suppose, if that makes sense(?). We see some flashbacks that relate to her 'training' as a child in Russia and we're given different clues about her background and you may feel pretty sure of some things although there are one or two plot twists in which we realise that perhaps the lines are blurred as far as some people are concerned - also as the movie unfolds, the scale of whats to come slowly becomes more clear which increases the suspense - by the time the truth as far as who's the good guy and who's the villain comes out, that scene is quite tense, with one character having to hold in their rage as their separated by a thin glass wall - thats a bit of a James Bond type moment but I won't go into any detail for fear of spoiling the movie for anyone. Suffice to say, its far from impossible to figure out most of the plot details in this movie but it still has some appeal as a decent action 'flick' - infact I would argue that Jolie's performance here is better (debatably more tolerable perhaps) than in some other movies - at least she didn't seem to annoy me as much as she has in other movies anyway lol. Also regarding the story, when the big attack is about to be launched near the end of the movie, as in other movies I found it a bit too coincidental the timing of the prompts and suchlike, though I don't feel that it totally spoiled the movie, it just made it a bit cheesier I suppose.

At the end of the day, this movies main attraction is the action with some suspense and I'd say that as far as those aspects are concerned, their handled pretty well, so its worth watching for that. If your a bigtime cynic (so to speak) then I'd imagine your main reaction to this movie, in terms of analysing the themes and the plot and probable holes within that, would be to roll your eyes and shake your head, at a guess.

Yes, I'd recommend it for the entertainment factor, though overall its nothing particularly original, I found it quite entertaining, there are plenty of action scenes and the performances are pretty decent. Its not the kind of movie that I think you'd be likely to want to pick out from the crowd some months afterwards but its certainly entertaining and it doesn't go on for an unnecessary amount of time - for what it is, its decent enough to pass the time and provides some good visual effects, explosions and chase scenes, so for that yes, I reckon I would recommend this.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. SALT is not a bad movie but the mind game that spy movies tend to play is executed badly, sadly. If the viewer pays attention he will notice that Evelyn Salt isn't killing anybody on the american side. So it is already clear that she is indeed the good person in all of this when we are not even halfway through the movie. There is no real plot twist, it becomes rather clear who will be the bad guy so we are just watching Salt do her thing to save the world until the movie is finished. SALT is not really a spy movie. If you expected that, you're probably disappointed. It is a straight forward action flick. It's competent but unremarkable. Expand

It is not the first time that Angelina Jolie has brought a spy to life, she did it very well in "Mr. And Mrs. Smith". Here, she comes back and in good shape, with a good job, but she is no longer as young or as beautiful as she was.

The script is simple but intriguing: Evelyn Salt, a highly respected CIA agent, is accused by a Russian defector of being a Russian undercover agent, trained from a child to be a convincing American citizen until it's time to act. While trying to protect her husband from the actions of his agency colleagues, Salt will have to flee in order to try to clear her name and discover the truth. It is a good script and it develops very well, but very much within what we can expect in a spy movie. In fact, we've seen similar movies before.

The cast is, as I mentioned, led by Angelina Jolie. She is an actress who is no longer young, and may even seem old for her role here. But she is very good at what she does, she has charisma and presence. Anyway, I think this film will never be part of the top ten in her career, she seems very uninspired. The rest of the cast do what they have to do to support her: Liev Schreiber was very good and tried to surprise; Chiwetel Ejiofor has little to do besides being a counterpoint to Schreiber's character; Daniel Olbrychski had no material for more.

Technically, the film is good. What I highlight most is the fast pace, which helps to keep our interest. Everything happens very quickly. Without that, and the excellent action scenes throughout the film, our interest would certainly be lost before the middle. The pace also helps to mitigate the credibility flaws in the story, as we are so attentive to everything that happens that we do not question the logic of it. A smart move. To add, we have good cinematography, with very well filming work and some light tension that helps in the action and makes the film fun to watch without making it too intense.

Fun, fast-paced, action-packed and with an intriguing story behind it, it is a film that will make the audience stick to the screen until the end, although they may probably not want to repeat the shot after realizing the several flaws it has.

Contained CGI, practical effects, shot on 35mm, great stunts, car chase scenes, gritty fights, competent direction, stunning and cold photography and great characters. The acting is superb, everyone does a fine job and of course Angelina steals the show. Her ambiguity is well played throughout the movie and the script is really well constructed, so much to keep you on your toes for the whole movie. Is it the most original spy story? No, but in a decade where apparently only super heroes and comic books movies are being made, this fine action thriller stands above other productions. The UHD Blu Ray is a must for its superb native 4K scan and impeccable audio specs. A fun action movie with a mature bond-like story without the over the top silliness and a strong female lead. Pity it didn't start a franchise a la John Wick or Bourne as the movie grossed over 290M worldwide and Angelina liked the character and was on board for a good sequel. With an idea as simple as, "Government agent gone rouge," this movie is anything but simple. There are plot twists and many small mysteries that keep you engaged throughout

PROS: This movie really is captivating to say the least. You're always on the edge of your seat, whether you are intrigued with the characters, or the action scenes. There is a little bit for everybody. The build up in the movie was great as well, from begging to end this movie never lets go of that tension it has built up. What also really helped this movie was the lack of plot holes. With a blockbuster hit like SALT, the director normally has no problems leaving big plot holes in the script, but this film doesn't do that. This movie was thought out immaculately. Last but not least, lets also give a shout out to Angelina Jolie (SALT) for giving her best performance in years. Any movie critic can give her credit for her oscar winning performance.

CONS: There are very little cons to this movie. The only thing that could've been more realized is the resolution. Was the ending good, yes, but it also needed more clarity. It didn't really help the watcher nor did it help connect to the rest of the film.

Yet, it is undeniably entertaining. For a first half that seems so compelling to only turn into a film where Angelina Jolie jumps from one truck to another on the highway as if they were just rocks in a stream is stunning. This is absolutely one of those films that asks you to just accept the fact that this girl is capable of literally anything or move on and watch a different film. Your enjoyment of the film is entirely reliant upon whether or not you will accept the logical leaps and gaps this film makes. Personally, this change is quite disappointing as the film becomes shockingly stupid and formulaic in the second half, but if you look past its dumb exterior, you will find that its interior is just as stupid. A case study in how being dumb does not make a movie bad, director Phillip Noyce's film is a thrilling film featuring Angelina Jolie kicking the **** out of people for an hour and a half.

Salt, if nothing else, proves that women in CIA super agent roles are not immune to being heavily objectified in a film. No matter how many people she takes down, the film goes to great lengths to **** Jolie's character of Evelyn Salt. From an initial scene where Jolie is dragged out in her bra and panties to be interrogated by the North Koreans to a later scene where she takes off her panties to block a camera, only to later sit in a cab with her legs apread, Salt continuously sexualizes her character. For a film that shows just how fierce she is, the film - as Mulvey would note - continues to play into the two roles for a woman in film: castrator and child-rearer. By highlighting her femininity and vagina, Salt highlights her lack of a penis and plays up that child-rearing possibility through not-so-subtle suggestion. With scenes of her beating men up and emasculating them by having them get easily taken down by a woman, Salt establishes her as a castrator capable of stealing the pride from any opposing male force she encounters.

That said, while the film plays into typical sexist traits of film, so do many films. Otherwise, it is just a rather straight forward action flick. Featuring Jolie as Evelyn Salt, a top-notch CIA agent with a husband and dog that is accused by an apparent Russian defector of being a sleeper agent set to assassinate the Russian President, the film initially toes the line quite nicely. Is she really Russian or is she playing for the Americans all along? Creating suspense and mystery around this subject, Noyce embraces both identities equally, leaving clues as to the truth in small actions she takes before making a run for it to try and rescue her kidnapped husband. This all mostly comes in the first half, which is definitely the stronger of the two halves of the film. Stylish, relatively smart, and well-staged, this section shows Noyce's grasp of how to create a spell-binding spy film that keeps its secrets tucked close to its chest.

However, the second half unfortunately becomes not just entirely stupid and implausible, but entirely cliche. From unsurprising reveals to a rather typical nuclear Russia and sleeper agent plot that seems more at home during the Cold War than the modern day, Salt plays on anxieties regarding Russia and never really makes them feel original. The Russians here are just run-of-the-mill European bad guys who may hide in plain sight, but need a lesson in how to not be so obviously Russian while still undercover. Ending with a greatly nuclear scene in a bunker under the White House - which inexplicably has a side room next to the safe room with a see-through bulletproof mirror (I have no idea why the safe room for the President has this room) - before we see Evelyn and the new chief bad guy do karate kicks at one another, the scene simultaneously shows the two sides of Salt. On one hand, we have the silliness of it all, compounded by cliches (omg the command is at 99%, but here she comes!). On the other, the excellent fight choreography, tension, and general spectacle of it all that makes the film oh so entertaining to watch.

While perhaps not the most well-thought out action movie ever made, Salt is still terrific fun. Well made and thoroughly thrilling throughout, Salt shows that when Angelina Jolie is given a gun and tasked with shooting or kicking anybody that comes near her, she is really in her element. Plus, who could not love another modern action movie that blatantly sets up a sequel and, as of yet, has not received one with no word on a sequel in five years? This should be a new subgenre: films that setup a sequel that will apparently never be made.

of woman actress who wishes to act out their torture fantasies and she seeks out parts like these.

I can reference the flicks “Mr. Sardonicus” where Lorna Hanson removes her shoes and stockings and bares her feet for leeches, both Doris Von Danwitz and Gaby Fuchs in “Mark of the devil”, where Gaby Fuchs is stretched out on a rack totally nude and has the soles of her bare feet scorched.

As Doris Von Danwitz also has the same fate of the rack stretching her albeit with a dress on but having her high arch soles roasted by a red hot branding iron, to the tune of her screaming. I’d like to know what motivates women to do this. To twist men out?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I tried to enjoy this one, but all I got from this movie was a bunch of questions -- really, a lot of them. (i.e. Wasn't there a better way to "activate" Salt other than Orlov turning himself in and telling the truth to CIA? If Salt was supposedly (as the movie tries to make us believe) set up by this Russian guy, why does she try so hard to get away, making her look even more suspicious? What does her husband have anything to do with the "Russian setup"? Wouldn't it be easier for Salt to "assasinate" Russian president if they kept it a secret? Did the Russian president agree to be killed for the whole plot? Did Salt know that Ted was a sleeping agent like her? If not, what was the whole point of sneaking into the Whitehouse bunker when she changed her mind? Why does Salt go so far to kill Ted when the president is alive? Why would Russia want to bring US down in these days, when cold war has been over for decades?[Let's save this one if I'm bringing in too much reality into movies] Is agnt Peabody the only one who can possibly know that Salt saved the day? Why does Salt have to go through dark knight thing when there is enough evidence --fingerprint at Orlov's-- and she can prove she did what she meant to do?) It seems to me, the story was squeezed and twisted way too much just for the sake of looking cool. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I simply can't believe the favourable reviews for this derivitive Female-Bourne nonsense. The stunts, fights and set pieces are utterly ludicrous, as is the plot - none of which makes ANY sense if you think about it for more than a minute (an example: we are expected to believe that a woman will watch the man she loves die horribly in order to maintain her 'cover' when she has within her power the ability to take apart methodically the men who are holding him hostage and cover her tracks in the process? Another example: Salt displays Bourne's preternatural foresight, but didn't manage to see ANY of this coming until she was 'activated'/set-up?). Obviously the filmakers have circumvented this by simply not giving the audience an opportunity to think about the plot by freneticly jumping from one death-defying cliff-edge punch-up to another for nearly two hours. This is a film that requires you to simply turn off your brain as we are expected to believe that an anorexic-looking waif of woman can outwit the Russians, the Americans and shoot, karate-chop and punch her way through what, at times, seems like the entire US governmental apparatus, intelligence services and military complex. This film is so over-the-top it's dissappeared into the stratosphere - but not in a good way. Expand

Expand

Quite possibly actually. Angelina Jolie delivers a very solid and action-packed performance as Evelyn Salt, a CIA Agent who goes on the run after she is accused by a Russian defector as being a Russian spy. It's nothing ground-breaking as we have seen this before but its very entertaining as there is some genuinely incredible action sequences. The story is somewhat confusing at times to say the least yet somehow intriguing as you try to work out just who Salt is. The area where Salt does deliver is in the entertainment. Whether its the action sequences or the element of surprise and excitement it is a throughly watchable film. As i've said before SALT is certainly nothing fresh its been done before, Bourne anyone? Ofcourse the intriguing element is the story and background and that makes it ever so slightly different but also given the fact its a female its a very good alternative from the macho, muscle assassin on the run. All in all Salt is a hugely enjoyable film with plenty on offer and while the story is far from straightforward its certainly worth a watch plus with the way the movie ends I think its natural to assume this isn't the last time we'll be seeing Angelina Jolie as Salt, this movie may well kickstart another franchise! In fact, frighteningly it reminded me of a Bruckheimer film where running about, shouting, leaping onto and off things with lots of explosions and impossibly gorgeous women are stock in trade. It is what happenned to Evelyn Salt. Since Mat Damon BOURNE IDENTITY (2002) which is using more advance believability approach in runaway espionage tale, now everybody wants to be Bourne by running, jumping, shooting, fighting, car-chase, motorcycle-chase, you-name-it and it all happenned in one action-packed. Couple examples which using the similar patterns are: John Travolta FROM PARIS WITH LOVE (2009), Tom Cruise KNIGHT AND DAY (2010), Ashton Kutcher KILLERS (2010) and now it is Jolie turn. The story follows Evelyn Salt (Jolie) who has been instant-accused as a Russian spy who may be able to jeopardizing the national security. The Director is Phillip Noyce, the man behind THE BONE COLLECTOR in 1999 (also with Jolie). The camera angle is dynamic, especially in action sequences. Yes, the movie is full of twists and turns, even sometimes the story just go by itself without proper explanations, leaving too many questions and missing links. That is the uniqueness of the plots! The story is intriguing. It is successful to make us stay put in our seat by expecting what is going to happen next. To let Jolie fuses into action adventure like thiz is like releasing the fish into water, it is what she does best. Jolie is still the focus, shines among her mysterious partner (Liev Schreiber) and plain-straight boss (Chiwetel Eijiofor). If someone complains about how absurd thiz narratives has become, it is simply arguable and it all happens to every modern action movies. One thing for sure, Jolie is back with some kiss-ass moves, to show us she is definitely one of the most comfortable action heroines in our time. Thiz SALT is happened to be sweet more than you think it is.

For my taste, she is at her best playing an action heroine and oozing sexuality. Make it a spy thriller and you can pretty much bet that I'll be first in line. In my opinion, there are two ways to evaluate any film. You can consider its technical elements and the precision of its actors, or you can just ask yourself if you enjoyed it. Well, I'm going with the latter this time, and I enjoyed the hell out of Salt.

Without giving away too much, I can tell you that the film is a spy thriller with lots of double crossing. In fact, the story is quite outlandish and barely even believable (okay, I lied, it's really not believable at all). But it's FUN. It keeps you guessing and rooting for the bad guy, or good girl, or whatever you want to classify Jolie's character as. She plays a spy who is suddenly outed as an undercover Russian agent when a very wanted Russian bad guy claims that she will soon kill the Russian President during his upcoming trip to America. That makes sense, right? Don't worry about it. Trust me. It will. And even if it doesn't, you won't care because it will be too loud and there will be too many explosions for you to remember what was supposed to happen anyway.

Salt is a thrill-ride. It's pure crazy fun and Jolie does a decent job of trying to keep it together. But with three versions offering three separate endings on the DVD, this is one you can watch over and over and still get a kick out of every time. You might need to suspend reality just a tad when viewing it, and have something to wipe away the drool, but it will be worth it.

Though the star gave it all she got playing a Russian spy, she wasn't enough to save the film from its wrong pacing style and ridiculously bad plot. Being trained as a Russian spy since she was a little girl, Evenlyn Salt lived a secret second life all this time. She's married and has a dog. But she worked in the CIA, so I guess that's something. Given that Angelina Jolie played the role, we have high expectations that she'd pull it off with lots of dramatic scenes. And that's exactly what we got. From the moment that she was being tortured in North Korea to the moment when she killed her spy partner, she was great. But given the fact that every spy movies starts with an undercover life and being captured at the end, Salt adds nothing new to the genre. Expand

ButWhen somebody accuses her of being a KGB sleeper agent, Evelyn Salt goes on the run and attempts to clear her name. But it becomes somewhat clear that Salt is actually a sleeper agent and was trained by russians when she was very young. But as a trained operative, Evelyn Salt has some ideas. It quickly turns into a plot that has many twists and I was impressed by how Salt kind of became the new Bourne, just by being able to do something quickly and the sharpness of it. With Angelina Jolie, it also provides the film with slight seduction but doesn't actually make the film better. What maked this movie interesting to watch is what seems to be million dollar question is "Who is Salt?" By the end no one knows for sure, and ends on a perfect cliffhanger that sets the stage for a Salt 2. The movie is intense and action packed from the start and definitely one of the best of the summer. Expand

This is the most ridiculous movie of all times, is the worst action movie that I've seen. Simply it is so absurd, so meaningless, so stupid. I wasted my time and my money

Jolie is oustanding and the action is passable, but overall, Salt is an amplified action thriller trying so hard to be something more profound that it does end up being trying indeed.

Bourne style script and action that literally never ends - just like the film itself. I guess we have to wait for the next installment of the film to find out what happens in the end.

One of the better movies I've seen in a while. Anyone who gives this less than an 7 or 8 shouldn't watch movies anymore, just go and hide in a dark hole b/c you're worthless to society.

I miss star vehicles. Watching Salt I was reminded of the impact a great star can have on even the silliest of plots or add to the storytelling with whistless fascination in such a profound way.

The film moves at a decent pace for the most part, but gets kinda silly towards the end. Which is a shame as it's quite the thrill ride on the big screen.

The plot could have been written by a 10 year old, the acting is mediocre at best and the "special effects" are, by no means, special. Need I say more?

It had a nice premise but lacked the execution that the any of the "Bourne" movies exhibited. Overall, it was a decent movie. It just fell short of creating a franchise, which it easily could have done.

In SALT, the best action thriller of Summer 2010, Angelina Jolie proves her talent in a leading role originally written for a man.

As secret agent Evelyn Salt, Jolie builds a character that is fresh, driven, interesting and not overly complex as she moves through steep emotional challenges. In SALT, she is accused of being a Russian double agent and must prove her loyalty to the U.S.A. while spies, government agents and criminal goons threaten at every turn. With abundant plot twists, SALT is just plain fun. Jolie asked for the part and got it, giving her the opportunity to become the quintessential secret agent woman. Not only does she play the genre well, she updates and redefines it in the following ways: - Brave with Heart: There's a dramatic moment in SALT where Jolie has the opportunity to blow away a Russian operative. She chooses not to do so. Moments like these help drive the plot, but also give welcome relief from the endless shootout scenes that fill espionage thrillers. Jolie develops human interest in scenes with her gawky but lovable German husband Mike (August Diehl). - Athletic and Sensuous: Jolie avoids the scantily clad look of James Bond's women. Her physique and stamina are on display, but not exploited. A satisfying array of stunts - most of which she performs herself - can inspire viewers who identify with a brave leading woman. SALT is like the spy film Julia on steroids. Agent Salt runs, leaps, changes her appearance, and gets where she needs to go. Facing life's daily challenges, arenâ

Maybe this can give you an idea of why this whale of a film has achieved its metacriic score of 65.

Unfortunately there are several problems with this film. The first of those is that it is trying to be too many things to too many people, ultimately failing flat on its face as a result. After wasting two hours of my life watching Salt I still couldn't work out if it was an Action film, a suspense drama, a Cold War alternative ending, a story of death and grief and loss and the ways humans react to these, or a film with smarts and brains...

Further hamstringing Jolie's valiant attempts to elevate this film from mediocrity with a determined acting performance is the scripts completely implausible premise and plot, lack of intelligence and utterly underwhelming character development, all of which led me to care little for the outcome of the films central protagonists. In trying to outsmart itself and be too many things to too many people Salt comes off as one of Jolie's more forgettable films in the last few years. Forget the metacritic score of 65 and spend your money on something better.

it is a shame that more thought has not been put into the script. It could have outdone Inception in a compelling film. Still hope they get to make a sequel though. Hopefully there would be more 'meat' in the sequel...
having said that, this film provides great entertainment, has wonderful action scenes and a great cast!
