This movie feels too short and predictable.
Unfortunately this is a disappointment.

The potential of a story that properly conversates about prejudice and how those with special needs are treated was only realized to the least possible degree. Still feel pretty bad that no one is watching this movie.

Esse filme tinha potencial.
É uma pena que a Dreamworks não tenha contratado escritores melhores para polir a história.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pros-the neon colours of the ocean is beautiful. And Ruby's struggles to fit in is very relatable for teens and pre teens these days. The songs in this movie were really good abd thr animation is wacky and colourful, quite a unique style.
Cons-However,the plot is really basic and has an ending that we can all expect and it feels too sweet and unrealistic and cliche. They also thrown into Chelsea as your stereotypical twist villain, which ain't a surprise. It could have been better if Chelsea changed for the better and considered Ruby her friend after spending time with her. And the humans are so fricking dumb. Like, there's not really much good character writing put into this movie. I'm guessing the target audience was young kids and not everyone, unlike Puss in boots:the last wish, which was my favourite movie of all time.

I'll never understand how Dreamsworks quality works...
In one year he gives us one of the best animated films in history and in the other he gives us one of the worst you'll see in years, seriously, the story is so mediocre and insipid.

"Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken" (2023): A Delightful Coming-of-Age Adventure by José Beltrán

Metacritic Rating: 8.5/10

Review:

Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken is a charming animated film that blends the magic of the sea with the trials and tribulations of teenage life. Directed by Kirk DeMicco and co-directed by Faryn Pearl, the film captures the essence of classic John Hughes films while incorporating elements from contemporary coming-of-age stories like "Easy A" (2010), "Lady Bird" (2017), and "Booksmart" (2019). With a talented voice cast led by Lana Condor, Toni Collette, Annie Murphy, Colman Domingo, and Jane Fonda, the film delivers a heartfelt and entertaining experience.

The story revolves around fifteen-year-old Ruby Gillman (voiced by Lana Condor), a seemingly ordinary teenager living in the seaside town of Oceanside. Ruby's desire to fit in clashes with her mother Agatha's (Toni Collette) overprotective nature, which leads to a series of events that change Ruby's life forever. When she unexpectedly transforms into a kraken after touching salt water, Ruby embarks on a journey of self-discovery and finds herself torn between her newfound powers and her longing for a normal teenage life.

The film beautifully portrays Ruby's relationships with her family, friends, and the enigmatic newcomer Chelsea Van Der Zee (voiced by Annie Murphy). Through compelling storytelling and well-developed characters, the film explores themes of identity, acceptance, and the importance of embracing one's uniqueness. Ruby's emotional journey resonates with audiences of all ages, reminding us that it is through our differences that we find our true strength.

The animation in Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken is visually stunning, capturing the enchanting world beneath the waves and the vibrant coastal town above. The underwater sequences are particularly breathtaking, showcasing the beauty and majesty of the oceanic realm. Stephanie Economou's musical score perfectly complements the film, creating an immersive experience that enhances the storytelling.

The film's blend of humor, adventure, and heartfelt moments strikes a perfect balance, appealing to both younger audiences and adults. The voice cast delivers exceptional performances, with Lana Condor bringing depth and vulnerability to Ruby's character, and Toni Collette showcasing the complexity of a concerned and overprotective mother. The supporting cast, including the likes of Sam Richardson, Liza Koshy, Will Forte, Jaboukie Young-White, Blue Chapman, Ramona Young, and Eduardo Franco, provides a strong foundation, adding depth and humor to the narrative.

Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken is not just a captivating animated film; it also carries a meaningful message about embracing our true selves and finding the courage to stand up for what we believe in. The film's exciting climax showcases Ruby's growth as she faces off against the formidable Chelsea Van Der Zee, ultimately demonstrating that true power lies within one's heart and determination.

In conclusion, Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken is a delightful coming-of-age adventure that seamlessly blends elements of fantasy and reality. With its engaging story, memorable characters, and stunning animation, the film is a must-watch for audiences seeking an uplifting and empowering cinematic experience. Prepare to be swept away by Ruby's journey as she discovers her true potential and embraces her destiny as the protector of Oceanside.

Overall, the film deserves its high Metacritic rating of 8.5/10, thanks to its strong storytelling, talented voice cast, beautiful animation, and its ability to capture the essence of both classic and contemporary teen films. Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken is a testament to the power of self-discovery, friendship, and the importance of staying true to oneself.

It's not a bad film but considering that this is coming off of the heels of one of Dreamwork's best films and coming out close to Across the Spiderverse, plus the terrible marketing that basically spoils the plot, yeah this film was set up to fail, which honestly sucks.

What is going on this year, seriously, this is a significant miss fire from Dreamworks, while the animations and visuals are commendable the actual story, the plot, and the characters are standard, this was clearly made for only kids.

Do you know what impresses kids these days, Fancy visuals that's it - look at the pretty glowing thingy. That's what this film does with its visuals. I don't have a problem with that it's just it's not only kids that watch animations.

As for the story, it is more predictable than Nimona, I was sitting for 2/3rds of the film saying "She's not your friend she's using you". So the writers did an absolutely poor job of trying to hide the plot. Everything is so generic and just a standard teenage drama occurrence. For such a smart "Kid" that's so good at math, you'd think that she knows that people lie and cheat, if her own mother didn't give her a hint, then what on earth was she expecting?

Do not watch this film unless you literally have nothing to watch or just have time to waste.

Ratings Power, Go:
Visuals: 10/10, Lush and detailed Visuals, I like it, it reminds me of those English clay cartoons, like Shawn the Sheep but at 60fps animation and full CGI.

Story: 5/10, Generic, Standard, Ok.

Characters: 4/10, Ruby is not a bad character, she is just partially boring and Stupid, sometimes, Teenagers am I right?

Plot & Pacing: 6/10, it's good pacing until 2/3 of the film, then it starts rushing because it's running out of run time.

I give this film a 5/10. Dream works, listen to the voice of reason please, Make a Megamind 2, Make a Shrek 5, Make Puss In Boots 3, just make anything that is not like this, We all expect much more from you guys.

I hope this is just a little trip on a stone and not the beginning of a flop dynasty.

This review was short, You guys are lucky this movie was tolerable at least.

A really simple plot. I think hat's the "teenage part" of the movie. Is fun in parts, but the movie is reaaaaaally predctable. Also, I didn't enjoyed the animation style. Perhaps Dreamworks raised the bar too high for them with Puss in Boots 2.

I saw the film on a Saturday and was satisfied with the film. However, I do feel it could've been so much better. Here's what works and doesn't work.

Pros: The animation was very colorful and the environments looked pretty good. The voice cast was very good, Annie Murphy was born to play Chelsea. I found the story pretty solid for younger audiences but I will get more into the story in a bit. The main character designs I really liked, they aren't perfect but I do think they are competent and fit the film's style. The soundtrack was also solid. There were some pop songs that I feel didn't fit the scenes they were in but for the most part, the soundtrack was good. I found most of the main characters likable, even if some were one note. There was a twist near the end that I thought was neat, even if it was probably for shock value.

That being said, this movie does a lot of wrong from being a very good to even a great film.

Cons: The story is your typical Coming-of-age story and doesn't do much different. If you've seen other movies in this genre, this film is very similar to those movies. The story reminded me a lot of Turning Red and kind of felt like a copy. I think the film would've been much better if it had a different story. Most of the side characters except Connor weren't very interesting and their designs and background characters look very goofy and off. The film was also very predictable at times. The marketing was honestly pretty misleading and revealed a lot of things in the trailers that should've been revealed and be a surprise in the movie. For example, Chelsea is meant to be a twist villain in the movie despite the trailers making it seem she is a villain right from the start.

Overall, Ruby Gillman had a lot of potential and isn't a bad movie but the film definitely could've benefited from having a different and more original story and better characters. I would say this film is worth watching if you have kids under 12 that are interested or if the premise is appealing to you. However, I do think this film will be divisive for people over the age of 12. I think there is a lot to enjoy and a lot to dislike.
