This is rebellion on a whole new (epic) level. It's a fun and more grittier adventure to the galaxy far, far away.

Rogue One; like all the SW-premieres are always a fun event to experience. Fans and non-fans alike collectively get together once again for this space adventure. It's visually a big upgrade from the prequels, and it does to a certain point manage to embrace the original film's charisma. Fun, bright and enjoyable characters is a big trace -- and forget romance! This is a pure war film where companionship is everything. We follow 'Jyn Erso' and the main story is greatly focused on her, but a major letdown is the underdeveloped side-characters. They are all well presented and we get some inside to their personalities; but there's no major background nor development to characters like 'Cassian Andor'. Our main antagonist 'Orson Krennic' is very much the same. But there are some deeper layers to him, but sadly not enough to be considered a complex nor memorable villain. Because of this lack of greater depth to characters; the few emotional moments that does exist could have been even greater, because there are some great ones. The great one-liners from K-2SO is on the other hand very much appreciated, it's great that they really understand the importance of humor in the SW universe.

The story that takes place is full of action, as expected -- but more importantly; the characters are the major players here. A great character-filled first act, a more passive & calmer second act, to a stunning and perhaps too massive third act -- that's Rogue One. There're many characters and places involved in this story. All of this made some of the story uneven. It kept going, from places to places, characters to characters and so on; it became an experience that's a bit too far- stretched. It lost that "wow-factor". The second act takes a step back and didn't impress me on a personal level. It's okay but nothing really impressive got to me. But I am confident enough to say to all the big SW-fans out there that you will definitely love this film, and yes there are some really impressive action pieces -- but I never got many "wow moments". It drags on and lacks a greater long-term stamina when it comes to action. When looking at the CGI; it's a major technological achievement, except for two major CGI characters that look all other than alive. They are impressive to look at; much details, but the way they interact and talk is so fake. Add a non- Williams score that's underwhelming, well the flick got flaws. But other than that I really enjoyed it!

It's a good Star Wars movie. Not the best nor the worst. It got its flaws concerning the uneven storytelling and undeveloped side-characters, and some flaws are more serious than other. It's a beautiful story that's partially gritty and it got a stunning visualization of Vader. Add a darker tone, a very satisfying finale and an ending that manages to wrap everything together! That's Rogue One. It's the pure definition of rebellion.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The best prequel to a movie to come out almost darn near 40 years after the original I ever done did seen. An absolutely beautiful film. Wonderfully written, incredibly sad, yet hopeful. Gritty without being cheesy. Makes me tear up every time. People say, "unmemorable characters, bad score, pacing issues." Do not listen to them. Do. Not. Listen to them. This movie... oh, man, this movie... The only flaw I can think of is that Saw Gerrera's characterization is a bit confusing at times, but everything else... a masterpiece, and one of my favorite films of all time.

Star Wars was the biggest thing from my childhood, and without any hesitation I would call this the best Star Wars film since the original trilogy. It recaptures the magic and tone that none of the subsequent movies could. It is also puts the WARS in there, this is the grittiest and most violent film of the series, not gratuitous, but putting the growing armed conflict front and center. The characters are amazing, the worlds are amazing, and the build up is amazing. Gareth Edwards did what JJ and Rian "Expectashunzzz" Johnson completely failed at, and for that, he was fired. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is a Star Wars movie that couldn't be more Star Wars. Set aside the Jedi and focused on the component of the Rebellion (finally!) the film does what it has to do. And it does it well. Maybe some characters could be handled well and the supporting characters are only needed to do one thing, die. But not all stories have to have a happy ending. Expand

Star Wars has managed to create a truly dramatic and dark story. Great cast of actors and soundtrack perfectly complemented the whole picture. I would love to see more dark Star Wars like this. Also, the creators did not stint on a couple of nostalgic moments, showing us old and beloved characters. From a small minus, you can cancel a slightly bad attempt to return to the screens of characters whose actors have already left this world, which is why these computer faces and all their facial expressions are very striking. It's gritty, in a way that is fundamentally different from the other films, yet still contains enough levity for it to feel like a crowd pleaser. How it tied together the other films is the work of someone on the level of Michelangelo, how it presented characters, new and old, are exciting, honest, and perfectly executed.

One of the greatest standalone movies in any franchise. A true treat to have watched this movie.

I heard it was supposed to be a very gritty war movie but Disney changed a lot. If I saw the original vision of the director, I would be ecstatic. Unfortunately, we don’t have the directors cut. Come one Disney, release their vision. I like how their wasn’t a forced romance which was really refreshing. K2SO was really funny. To me, he had R2 energy but talked. I won’t pretend the movie is perfect. It has pacing problems and some scenes really weren’t necessary. Also, the revived Peter Cushing was really weird but I prefer it to Mandolorian Season 2 Luke. Despite the plethora of problems, it’s still better than the other Disney Star Wars movies excluding Force Awakens. I just like it and that’s my opinion. We can like bad things ok? If I had to rate it without considering my intense enjoyment, it would probably be around 5-6. Expand

It's pretty embarrassing how much people will eat up this movie's **** I mean sure, it's fun to pop it in and mindlessly watch for a weekend or somethin but you'll never remember the character's names or what their point was. If I'm looking at this movie super critically it deserves a 7, but I'm going to give it an 8 because it's just such a fun movie.

This movie isn't here for you to get super invested in its story. It's here to do two things: explain why the Death Star had a built flaw, and explain how the rebels got the Death Star plans. It does those two things very well.

The best part of this movie is easily the ending, and that's true for most Star Wars movies. It's very easy to understand, the action is exciting, and it's well animated, choreographed, and acted, there's a lot is going on, but it never feels overwhelming.

Finally, and I know that I'm going to sound like I'm joking when I say this but I'm not. The most refreshing thing about this movie is that the two main characters don't kiss at the end. I'm so sick of forced romance plots being shoved into movies that don't need them. This very franchise is guilty of that. They're just happy to exist next to each other, and that's refreshing in this generation of movies.

If you want a fun Star Wars movie and nothing more then I'd say pick this one up. It's very fun, it doesn't really overstay your welcome, and it keeps a good pace throughout. By the time you're getting a bit tired of the final fight, it's over and we're into A New Hope territory. It's a fun movie, and that's all it really needed to be.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, is easily the best of the Disney Star Wars films released so far. The writers were able to take two sentences from the opening crawl of a film made in 1977 and create a masterpiece that fits seamlessly into the established story, and even add and enhance it.
Immediately after seeing the midnight showing of the film on opening night I had to go home and watch Episode IV, and I was shocked at how well the writers had done. How many times do you see Vader actually angry, rather than coldly mocking? Not many. However, right after the introduction of the character we see him holding Captain Antilles of the Blockade Runner by the throat and choking him to death, then screaming at his men to find the plans. That scene makes sense after the hallway scene in Rogue One that ends with him watching the ship with the stolen plans flying away.
Little details like that make a film worth watching, and Rogue One is full of them.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Rogue One is successful in providing a compelling narrative in which both expands the galaxy and ties directly back to A New Hope. Its biggest strength is the thrilling third act, featuring one of the best and most intense battles in the franchise. It successfully blends nostalgia (minus one out of place Easter egg) with a new cast of characters (and some returning) seamlessly into the narrative. It’s shot beautifully, thrilling, and a highlight for the Disney era of the franchise. Expand

Expand

I didn't know anything about it, so I went in completely blind. The only thing I knew about this movie is the Darth Vader scene, and I thought if it has that scene, it must be having plenty such scenes. Turns out that scene is to this movie what Flash and Superman's slow motion fight is to Josstice League: The only one good scene in the entire movie. Most of this movie is just talking, talking and more talking.
I won't complain about it though. I didn't know the "We were on the verge of greatness" meme was from this. I used to think that meme is about an agriculture scientist from Discovery telling how his experiment failed. So subsequently the "Are we blind? Deploy the troops!" meme also had to be from here, another one I didn't know where it was from. I ended up liking K2SO, he was my favourite character from the movie. I felt really bad seeing him die.
The action scenes of this movie are very good, now that I think back about it, especially the one with the blind Jedi. The scene where a droid that looked like H2SO gets shot and then the actual H2SO comes from the back saying, "I hope you knew it was not me." was hilarious. But that's the only scene I remember, other than the Darth Vader scene of course. Most of the scenes from this movie are very forgettable. Out of the over 2 hour of runtime, I only remember barely 2 minutes from it combined.
I don't see the point behind the making of this movie. It just answers a question nobody asked. I wasn't even paying attention because I was waiting for the Darth Vader scene, as I had begun thinking it isn't in this movie until the very end. I could definitely give it a rewatch whenever I get a Disney+ Hotstar connection, but that's really far from today.

A pretty cool prequel to 1977's 'Star Wars'. I wouldn't say I overly enjoyed it, but it's worthy for the purpose it serves.

What stopped me from loving 'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story' was probably, mostly, the pacing, which I found to be too slow in parts. It never majorly affected my viewing experience, but I could feel it slightly dragging here and there. I also didn't like the cast on anything more than a neutral/standard level.

Felicity Jones does an admirable job in the lead role, I did like how they set her story up at the beginning. I also found any scene with Mads Mikkelsen good to watch, while Riz Ahmed and Forest Whitaker are solid; Alan Tudyk is OK as well. Diego Luna and Ben Mendelsohn, however, didn't do anything for me.

The story itself is satisfactory, the ending to it is more meaningful than I was expecting and features a few nice shots; the whole film looks lovely in fairness. I personally would've shaved 10-20 minutes off the run time and got more devilish antagonists, though.

Still, it's at the very least a good film no doubt.

Gloomy, showing the horrors of war. It is despicable to weave the Vietnam War into this film (Soviet Sith Empire?), But even so, the film came out grabbing for the soul.
It's a shame that actors like Donnie Yen and Mads Mikkelsen were in such short roles.

Outside of Empire strikes back this is the best of the Star Wars movies. The characters and aliens are a perfect balance of originality, yet with that undeniable starwars feel. There are several larger than life characters who are so well acted and portrayed and we care for them (Jin), we hate them (Crennik), they make us laugh (kso2, the best droid in all the starwars) and they make us cry (Cassian and Jin), they make us tremble in fear and awe (saW and vader), and they charm us (Chirrut Imwe KSO2). The Mandalorian is a good show, but I think it should take notes from rogue one. Mandalorian over does the muppet like cute characters that are kinda funny, but rogue one does it just right with a darker and scarier and grittier atmosphere and characters fitting of todays caliber of a darker yet more subtle style (the jedi with the wooden stick, instead of a light saber was better than the Jedi in most of the series), yet Rogue one is still cute with an array of cuddly yet formidable characters and it is much funnier than Mandalorian (after the rebels blindfold the blind Jedi he says “are you kidding me? I’m blind”) which is still good. whatever team made this movie, needs to be the ones to remake episodes 78 and nine, and be directing the Mandalorian as well. it’s been a while since I gushed over a Star Wars movie, but rogue one is phenomenal. i can't believe this does not have a sequel. I would love to watch prequels about Saw or Jin or Cassian Expand

While there are tiny cheesy call backs and fan service, overall it does a good job establishing new characters, flushing out minor characters from the original movie, and tying together with a new hope. It spends little time re-explaining the context, because it knows is redundant, because everyone and specially the main audience has already watched the original "Star Wars IV: A New Hope" (to which this film is a direct prequel to).

The time it could had spent doing that is better used. Finally clearing up the political context the original film didn't had time to explain. An in the process adding, some much needed moral complexity, into the Star Wars mythology. Is the thing we needed, but we didn't knew we wanted. As this movie shoews, it turns out that the Rebel Alliance aren't the saints the Original Trilogy painted. They did committed a few sins in their road to free the Galaxy from Emperor Palpatine.

Nothing here contradicts the Originals, it only makes the experience richer, by adding depth. The film is a like a prolonged prologue to "Star Wars IV:A New Hope". The protagonists are new characters, but the film is, also packed with cameos it doesn't bother to name them, neither to explain their role in the previous films, and honestly it doesn't need to. I'm glad it doesn't waste a second in redundant stuff you can see in previous movies. It instead makes clear, what they do, in this film. The hardcore fans sure will recognize them, I agree on this choice, what thit movie does explain is the new characters which is clever. Is a blend of old and new.

Another thing that makes better than The Force Awakens is that all the characters know their identity. They aren't building to a mistery or anything, they just tell you who everyone is right of the bath. As I said, simple works best.

Sure it lets a few things ambiguous, I would even say unexplored, and slightly unresolved. But I would say is fine. The movie does it's job at proving us that there is a bigger untold Star Wars narrative between each movie, and that this is just a small part of it. We are never going to get all details, because this characters were never meant to be as popular as the ones from the main movies.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have to commit, I'm a bit furious about the Metascore of Rogue One. A score of 65 while "the last Jedi" is getting 85 (and also a "must watch") is simply not acceptable. Rogue One is the Star Wars spin-off every fan wanted. It follows a clear, and most importantly an own story unlike the Star Wars Sequels. This movie explain some things who were always important for Star Wars: a new hope, and ended were all begun with probably the best Darth Vader-scene ever. I also liked that this movie wasn't that soft like the sequels are, where only the bad or old people can die. Rogue One gave me more interesting and way better heroes like "the force awakens" did. It finally AWAKENED a true Star Wars feeling in me. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm a die-hard Star Wars fan. I had really high hopes for this movie, especially since I also really liked The Force Awakens, and to be honest, this was a good movie, but not as good as I expected. The first act of this movie really had problems with the pacing. I wanted to see more deeply into the characters, and see what their personalities were like. It would have been also cool if they had back stories too, but the characters just feel forced in to me, without much characterization of them, which is really sloppy pacing to me. However, the 2nd and 3rd acts were much better in my opinion. We got a great storyline that connects to A New Hope, and there were some amazing emotional scenes as well. I also gotta admit that K-2SO's jokes had me laughing. Where the movie really stands out to me however is the 3rd act. We got some amazing battles, both in the galaxy and on the beach too. It was nice seeing all these things from previous Star Wars movies come back. The graphics were really nice too. So yeah, overall, not my favorite Star Wars movie, but it was certainly not bad. It has flaws, especially in the first act with the pacing, but I can forgive that because of the great storyline that conflicts with the characters and how the storyline connects to a New Hope, the hilarious jokes and emotional heartbreaking scenes, and the extremely amazing battles in the 3rd act. So overall, I'd recommend this Star Wars movie. I'm giving it a B and a 7/10. Expand

When you think that Darth Vader made only a cameo you get the most badass scene you can imagine. You see the fear in his enemies eyes as they recognize that they are screwed. But lets start at the beginning. It was planned as spin off with the premise to be a war movie. “Good guys do horrible things in wars” was a quote of the director. There were massive reshoots and rumors about the movie. You can see it it the trailers. There are many scenes that are not in the movie. The cast is relativly good. Felicity Jones is the lead as Jyn Erso. She carries her role and burdens. Diego Luna as Cassian Andor is a rebel that does the dirty work for the Alliance that has to be done. He is not evil, more the kind of guy that sacrifices his soul for the sake of the greater good / others. The secret stars are Donnie Yen as Chirrut Inwe and Jiang Wen as Baze Malbus. The two are an awesome duo and so enjoyable to watch. Riz Ahmed delivers his role as imperial defector who seeks redemption. K-2SO a droid and former enforcer is also a highlight. I must mention that the Star Wars movies create a lot of good droid characters. For the villains: Ben Mendelson as Orsen Krennic is a perfect power hungry plotter and high ranking imperial (I think there is a huge overlap or there is even no difference). Then there is Darth Vader and an iconic character that returns (Wont spoil). Forest Whitaker as Saw Gerrera is more a good bad guy or anti hero and underused. He is the kind of rebel that does all that is necessary no mater the causalities or morality. He is also someone who would never abandon a friend or break his own code of honor (He could have become the Che Guevara of Star Wars). The story starts slow and got better as the movie progresses. The final is just awesome. It is the spirit of the rebellion. The people that wont give up no matter the odds push forward on a suicide mission just to keep hope / the rebellion alive. They are outnumbered and have only the surprise attack and distraction advantage on their side. The Empire soldiers outnumber them at least 100 to 1, have superior weapon and can call for even more reinforcements. Its so good and immersive that I consider giving 10/10 for it alone and forget that the set up to get there is not worth this rating. Also the ending. I never thought that they have courage to pull this off. It gives the characters even more meaning. There are of cause the issues with the CGI. Some familiar characters look really weird. This is not that serious for me but I must admit that it is an issue that can hurt the experience for some. Overall the final safes this movie. It would be unremarkable but no failure without it. I will praise the characters and want to see more. I also want to see the original movie before the reshoots but don't think it is possible. Expand
