Based on his book about a young girl with special talents, this musical goes full force. From the enchanting opening baby sequence, it's obvious that we're in for some ingenious entertainment. Alisha Weir plays the title role with aplomb, but it's Emma Thompson, as the evil headmistress, who steals the show. Her character alone is devilishly evil and her musical numbers are wickedly funny. Tom Minchin's catchy songs are made even more clever with Ellen Kane's lively, inventive choreography. Director Matthew Warchus continually surprises with lovely visuals and off-kilter approaches that add to the enjoyment. Sure, this is aimed at kids and/or families, but the energetic staging is so inventive and the performances are so much fun that everyone can enjoy this devilish delight. Expand

Roald Dahl's Matilda the Musical is a decent adaptation and has some good performances, but at the end of the day, the film it's pretty average Not that I don't recommend it, of course, but, even if it's not insignificant, I doubt you'll remember it before the new year begins.

This movie is amazing! Just finished watching it and will gladly do so again. Pure delight in a movie. It certainly differs from the 90s classic enough to occupy a space right next to it.

The direction wasn't monotonous; I really enjoyed it all. Then again, there are significant differences in what can be done in theatre and film, so I wouldn't claim it is necessarily superior to the stage musical. Nevertheless, this was excellent.

The best part is the musical numbers; the editing and choreography are exceptional, giving the story excellent dynamism when presented. Emma Thompson's performance is incredible; her interpretation of Trunchbull is grotesque and convincing. She is the soul of the movie. Perhaps the weakest part of this new version is Matilda herself since little Alisha Weir does not generate so much sympathy. Similarly, Lashana Lynch as Miss Honey does not contribute much; her character is the least interesting of all. I think she's miscast. And, for the umpteenth time, Netflix extends the length of its products more than necessary; about 90-95 minutes would have been perfect. Expand

GET ME OUT OF HERE!!!!!!!
This was honestly the most awful film I have ever been unfortunate to watch. If I could i would have left but went with a friend, not a close friend (who probably felt the same but didn't say, awfully British of us).
GET ME OUT OF HERE!!!!!!!
This was honestly the most awful film I have ever been unfortunate to watch. If I could i would have left but went with a friend, not a close friend (who probably felt the same but didn't say, awfully British of us). It hurt my ears the tedious songs without any real substance just blurted out with whiny smiles from obnoxious casted overrated children. Emma Thompson was appalling and not the least bit scary , not a tiny wincy patch on Nanny McPhee's acting or character, I was so relieved it was over i cannot comprehend anyone thinking this was a great musical it was horrendous horrendous horrendous!

Expand

This was a pleasant journey with Matilda. She's a lovely young lady who encounters various unpleasant circumstances and comes out the better for it. We'd recommend "watch it - you'll like it."

First of all, this movie IS NOT A NEW ADAPTATION OF THE 1996 FILM, it is an ADAPTATION OF THE MUSICAL, well now with that clear, Matilda the Musical manages to shine surprisingly with a wonderful matilda and such impeccable music

I just finished watching it for the first time and it’s the best musical film i’ve seen in a while, definitely near the top of my list of my favourite films. It was great to see a film adaptation of the West-End musical, and they did it splendidly. It was incredibly heart-warming, funny, slightly tense at times with some sad/ emotional moments, but all together, with the songs, incredible main cast and ensemble, the film was spectacular and didn’t have a single dull moment. From Emma Thompson’s unsurprisingly excellent and believable portrayal of Miss Trunchbal, to Matilda’s actor’s flawless talent;perfection.
I was so glad to see the songs and the musical i enjoyed so much when i was a young child, i will definitely be watching Matilda the Musical again, many times. And the people who have been leaving 1 star reviews have quite obviously never seen the original Musical, and were unaware that the film was based on that, rather than the 1996 Film with Mara Wilson. Anyways, I hope this film goes on to receive any sort of award, because it will definitely be well deserved.

Great movie. I expected it to be bad as most movies are a lot worse than the original but this could rival the original. This movie shows us matildas intelligence creativity more than the first one

Catchy songs, but the west end theatre versions are performed better. I enjoyed this movie a lot.
