It's not only visually stunning but boasts some clever ideas and moral questions. Andy Serkis continues to prove that he's not only the master of mo-cap, but a brilliant method actor. Not since Avatar has CGI so effectively been married with the real world, and every Ape is believable as a character. The sequence documenting Caesar's formative years is magical, and the action-packed finale is heart-racing, but sadly other parts of the film lack a bit of a punch. This is partly due to the dullness of the human characters - no-one (with the possible exception of John Lithgow's Alzheimer's-afflicted Charles) are anywhere near as interesting, or easy to relate to as Caesar. This motion-captured chimp (a hyper-intelligent chimp, this is true, but still a chimp) out-performs everyone else on screen. This is a true testament to Serkis' skill, but also proof that the rest of the cast's performances are generally lacklustre. So the film is interesting enough, the plot reasonably entertaining, with some nice nods to the original Apes film, and the visuals are beautiful. However none of the flesh-and-blood characters can compete with the apes in terms of likeability, complexity or emotional grounding. And the title's just silly. Expand

Rise of the Planet of the Apes is a brilliant summer blockbuster with loads of action in its final 25 min of its reasonably lengthed hour and 55 minutes. The only reason I gave it a 9 and not a 10 is because i thought it got a little boring and slow in the beginning, but just a little, otherwise this movie enthralled me from the start. This movie was a great way to end off the summer of blockbusters. Even if your not an apes fan go see this movie because anybody can enjoy a great film. 9.5/10 Expand

Just alright. I was most definitely entertained but there wasn't anything that was really blow away for me. I also didn't find it to be near as emotional as some people made it out to be. Worth a watch, not sure if I would've paid $10 in hind sight.

Nope but what has been made is entertaining with likable characters that will have you rooting for them through their predicament. The stars of Rise of The Planet of The Apes are the CGI apes themselves which have more heart and interest then the human actors which are on the lacking side. James Franco has a permanent stoned look on his face the whole movie and never seems to completely convince as a scientist more than him wearing a lab coat. It was also good to see an Indian actress in the supporting role but unfortunately the story fails to do much with her. Most of the CGI effects are great and succeed to convince, however there was a couple of border silly parts having over exaggerated animations like a cartoon which breaks the illusion. Despite some of the plot holes and half good story, Rise of The Planet succeeds as an entertaining movie. Recommended.â Expand

Though initially skeptical of the story, everything was well executed; particularly the means and reasons behind the apes' uprising; With a semblance of time and high shock value to boot. Through stylish direction and astonishing visual effects (which needs to win the VFX Oscar next year) Serkis' performance is excellently captured adding humanity and depth to our lead ape. The 2001 remake pales in comparison to this and the original films will always remain classics. This goes down as a satisfying reboot to a long running franchise and I'm eager to see what awaits in its future. Expand

When I saw the trailer, I was very put off by another planet of the apes movie, and the thought that a couple apes could take over our planet seemed just hyper-ridiculous. Anyway, after hearing unanimous positive reviews from my fiends, I went, and it blew me away. I'm not kidding, the plot is extraordinary, the development of the main chimp, Caesar, is one of the best I have seen, the take over is well played out and plausible, I'm serious. This film deserves it's reputation. THIS LAST PART IS A BIT OF A SPOILER - It is only logical that a drug that enhances the brain's function and reparation would eventually lead the chimps to speak, and although that concept could seem cliche, cheesy, or has the ability to come off as ridiculous, they pulled it off unbelievably well. Once again, this film is an excellent result of good a good writers, directors, and film-making. Expand

Now, 20th Century Fox and director Rupert Wyatt have taken the smart move of giving us simianatics something new (of sorts) a modern day retelling of the uprising of the apes by using a carefully told tale of science gone awry, and also at the same time giving us the journey of Caesar, the film's protagonist, from being just a super-smart ape who just wants to go home, to a leader of many who wants to set his own kind free from the shackles of scientific research.

James Franco plays Will Rodman, a geneticist trying to find a cure for Alzheimer's disease, an affliction that's very personal to him as his father, Charles Rodman, played by John Lithgow, is suffering from the disease and worsening by the day. When Will's prize ape, Bright Eyes, a female chimp who displays tremendous intelligence after being given the proposed cure, runs amok at Gen Sys and is killed, Will is left with her small infant, a chimp he dubs Caesar. Cut to five years later and Will's cure, which at first seemingly cured his father's Alzheimer's, is now failing, and Caesar is forced to go and live in a primates sanctuary when he attacks the Rodmans' neighbour in defence of Charles.

With all of the pieces now firmly in place, it's time for the apes to 'rise', and indeed they do.

The first thing I found quite interesting about tbe film was that it didn't centre on an all-action ape versus human tale with the winner taking the planet, instead it's a simple story of one chimpanzee standing up for what he believes in. Andy Serkis (Lord of the Rings, King Kong) gives an absolutely mesmerising performance as Caesar, causing you to forget that not only is a human playing the lead role via the medium of motion capture, but also, none of the primates are real, the wizards at Peter Jackson's Weta Digital have managed to pull off the greatest of feats, not once do you look at the apes and think they don't look real, blending seamlessly into their surroundings.

Praise should also be given to James Franco, despite many criticisms of him giving many wooden performances in the past, he manages to make the man who will eventually be responsible for the destruction of the human race quite likeable.

A great deal of the film's storytelling is mute, told by gestures and sign language, the other quite brave move the filmmakers have made is the fact their primary character is not only computer-generated, but also not human. There are many small nods to the previous franchise, if you're a fan of them be on the lookout, a lot of them are very subtle.

The film is by no means a complete intellectual examination of apes taking over the world, there are plenty of action scenes you normally expect with a summer blockbuster, but even these do not feel out of place fitting perfectly into the flow of the story.

If you want an enjoyable two hours, which hopefully after viewing might leave you pondering the messages the film tries to get across, then Rise of the Planet of the Apes is for you.

But well done Rupert Wyatt because Rotpota (as I shall forever call it) is a suprisingly heartfelt, clever, and delicately handled movie. As we already knew Andy Serkis is a mo-cap (sorry performance capture) genius, the character of Caeser being by far the most interesting thing about the movie. The CGI was very nearly but not quite perfect, some scenes (ape swinging around the house) didn't look brilliantly realisitic but there were a number of shots where I genuinly thought they were filming real apes. Performances are fine but not great (anyone else find James Franco a bit wooden?). This movie left me wanting more, a rare thing with summer blockbusters nowadays. Bring on The Fight for the Planet of the Apes!

For a bit of extra fun keep an eye on James Franco's side-burns, on one particular scene they lost an inch from one shot to the next! And don't run out of the cinema as soon as the credits start rolling . . . .

Well, I'm surprised to admit that not only Rise of the Planet of the Apes is not only a good movie, it's probably the best one you will see this summer. Little was to expect from a franchise that felt like it had run its course, but Rupert Wyatt pulled it off thanks to an airtight script and dazzling CGI images as well as a charismatic lead ( Andy Serkis as Cesar the Ape), he gave us one of the smartest, most thrilling piece of entertainment. So why only a 7 ? The cast. For a 93 million dollar movie Everett needed an appealing cast: Freida PInto ( of Slumdog millionaire fame) John Lithgow ( Winner of an emmy and a golden globe for his portrayal of the serial killer in Dexter) and Tom Felton ( Draco Malefoy) were selected but fell short. Only James Franco gave (as always) an interesting performance as the conflicted Will Rodman. The human cast was a major disapointement which makes Andy Serkis ( Caesar the ape) and Karin Konoval's ( Maurice the Ourang-Otan) performance stand-out. The CGI effects are masterful (much like the make-up in the original movie) added to the references to the first movie of the franchise (one a little too obvious) makes this tale about freedom, friendship and liberty a must-see. If you want to know how the apes got to be top banana, this movie will explain it all to you. Be prepared for role reversal, because you will not be pulling for your own species, and maybe rightly so. How some people treat animals is unconscionable.

But this one is far more mature, fast and smart. The major credit going to Weta for the amazing visual effects in creating the apes. They look absolutely realistic and are a treat to watch, especially during the final 20 minutes. The movie does feel slow at times, but picks up pace quick. James Franco still seems to be in the same mode as he was while hosting the oscars(which was absolutely disastrous). Freida Pinto is OK. And John Lithgow adds a great emotional touch. But the actual hero of the movie has to be Andy Serkis. Watch the movie for him. You won't regret it. Expand

Not only is James Franco a superb actor which has been in so many awesome movies since spiderman came out and the CGI here has to be the best I've seen, andy serkis' motion capture is insane, these apes look as real as they can be, the facial expressions, movements, everything is top NOTCH! Combined with the realistic idea of science (and its technological advances) and its subsequent effects, the audience is pulled into a marvel of the pros and cons of a near-realistic scenario (apes obtaining human intellect). But we kick off the film in a not so happy way as a hopeful breakthrough goes wrong, leaving Will to care for and looked after Cesar, but also his own ailing father (John Lithgow) who suffers from the incurable disease mentioned above. So far we already see the talented cast involved, yet they largely stand in the background as plot devices to further develop the plot, but anyway, Will decides to treat his father with the virus, with some overwhelmingly positive results, but as Cesar grows older his instincts begin to get the better of him, he asks his owner (through sign language) if he is a pet, well he is isn't he? I mean how else is something like this supposed to survive on its own without its own kind. Tom Felton also makes an appearance as an angry sanctuary worker, man does this guy love to be the bad person, he carries around a taser and pokes fun at the chimps, but its clear to see that he won't get away with it. The problems surrounding the human cast are down to a lack of reason for many of them to be there, they consistently play second fiddle to the chimps and for good reason, but not all of the talent is entirely without cause, the real star of the show is Andy Serkis, the motion capture whiz behind the face of Cesar, the same man who played Gollum in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, he manages to outdo all the actual talent on screen not being motion captured, the scenes later in the film with Cesars cold and focused stare towards the camera are thrilling and intense, these scenes are so well orchestrated as they are shares only by other apes, showing a true leap in CGI but also relying on excellent direction to show exactly that, without talking, these creatures have plans, this work reaching its peak with one small but significant word spoken by Cesar himself, it's shocking, but so good to watch as everything falls into play, with a finale that makes sense while also giving closure to one story arc, leaving room to open another. This is the reboot that we all wanted, teaching us acceptance and perhaps not becoming too attached to the inevitability of change, it corrects many mistakes that previous outings made, an while it does have a few of its own, this is solid ground for a restart and a new rise. Now, you might screaming at me about how much you love Avatar and that you say that I'm a monster, but 2 years ago critics understood that the film lacked substance. Fortunately, this isn't Avatar. Instead this was a much more powerful film that had effort put into all aspects of the film, especially the acting and writing which create an emotional attachment to the main characters. It's also a film that has those awesome moments where you go, "OH SH-T!!!" I could never take my eyes of the screen, it was that entertaining. Everything else is not even in the same ballpark. Not only does this movie give us an exciting and thought-provoking story, but it also delivers state-of-the-art effects that bring us one step closer to flawless computer animation. The character of Caesar (played brilliantly in motion capture by Andy Serkis) is one of the most compelling characters of the year. Thanks to Serkis, we come to understand all of Caesar's actions even though he doesn't really speak. We get to see his joy as a young ape swinging through the redwoods, and his hostility and determination when he finds himself locked in a facility with other apes. Through Andy Serkis' wonderful portrayal, I found myself having a strong vested interest in the outcome of this ape, and through that, I was able to hook myself into the storyline. The story, by the way, is expertly handled by Hollywood newcomer, Rupert Wyatt. Wyatt first gives us a chance to get to know the characters and the situation at hand. There's no rushing along in this action movie. Once that is set up, he delivers the goods. We get the chance to see how Caesar becomes the leader of the apes, and that leads to a stunningly crafted action scene that will overwhelm your senses with joy and excitement. This is one of those rare summer movies where you actually feel like there is some craftsmanship involved in making it. If you've been looking for a summer action movie that will blow you away, look no more. The apes are finally here, and they make for one hell of a fascinating movie. Expand

I didn't really want to see this overhyped prequel, but my friends felt otherwise, and we went. For the first 40 minutes, the movie actually has a plot, is on genre, and was surprisingly good! Unfortunately, it goes way downhill from there. As the apes get smarter, the reality of the film decreases, and gets to the point where it becomes laughable. I loved the first half, but by the end of the film, I couldn't wait for it to end. First time director, Rupert Wyatt, really doesn't know when enough is enough! Some of the scenes just went on and on, and of course, they were the more ridiculous ones. Andy Serkis, who played the main ape, did a nice job with what must have been a difficult role. I give him props for that, but it's a good performance wasted in a ridiculous film, that was much too long, one that eventually becomes a farce of itself. Seriously, ignore the hype and save your money, this film is a waste of time. Expand

A brilliant researcher has developed a new serum that has the potential to cure Alzheimer's, but when his test subjects are killed following after a failed experiment, he is left with only one chimp. Will raises Caesar as his own, as his intelligence begins to grow at an alarming rate. After a freak attack against one of the neighbors, Caesar is forced into a wildlife rescue, where he and each of the other animals are abused and tormented by their jailers, forcing Caesar to rally the other apes in a revolt against humanity!

RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES provides a fitting beginning to the fall of mankind, although a sequel certainly seems eminent. Rupert Wyatt brings the film to life using astounding special effects and heart-pounding action that are sure to keep you on the edge of your seat! Although James Franco and John Lithgow attempt to inject some forced sentimentality into the earlier scenes, the main focus always remains on our anti-hero chimp, Caesar. Through cutting-edge motion capture technology, Andy Serkis is able to give this fully-computerized character true life, with personality, heart, and soul that read through his eyes and expressions. Caesar gains sympathy and support in his struggles against mankind, as he suffers time and time again at the hands of his captors. Watching RISE is a bit of an Easter egg hunt as well, with clever cameos and allusions to the other films embedded playfully throughout the script. The only real misstep is that the long running time only provides the beginning to the beginning of the story, and never amounts to the full-scale planetary take-over by the super-intelligent apes. The strengths and successes will surely allow for a continuation in the next chapter, however. -Carl Manes

The perfect summer film. Having many memorable moments, an exciting and satisfying climax, and heart, this is easily one of the better adventure films in recent memory.

Hands down the absolute best quality about the film is the performance by Andy Serkis. He has revolutionized the way we look motion capture performances. Not only has he done it in LOtR and King Kong, he proved he could do it a 5th time delivering an astounding performance. Hopefully he can get the Oscar nomination he deserves! What a film, and what a performance from Andy Serkis! Expand

The best thing about the movie is how the apes come across as genuine characters, instead of just realistic digital animals. Caesar is the group's standout. The human characters on the other hand aren't very original or engaging. They're mostly here to serve as the obligatory foundation so that the origins story can be told. What I found most disappointing however was that the movie hints time and time again at something more intelligent, more daring, and more disturbing than what it actually delivers. The tone is too lighthearted for it to really break through. So the movie's not incredible... But it is a decent enough franchise reboot to work while your watching it, as well as give hope for the sequel to come. Expand

The movie really had no flaws. It's just fun to watch. So go watch it.

It has an incredibly interesting story, the most realistic CGI that I have ever seen in any film, and the ability to make a non-speaking ape the most interesting protagonist of any film this year.

The story is extremely well paced, it has great build up in which characters are set up very well, and gives us some very interesting early scenes. But it's all left in the dust when our hero Caeser is introduced. This film manages to make a character who doesn't talk be extremely relateable, and oddly enough very well written. His transformation from quiet city ape to a crazy one hell-bent on an uprising is handled exceptionally well.

The CGI in this film is, by far, the best in cinematic history. Why? Because the apes look real. There were so many moments throughout this film that I thought the apes were genuinely there. There was a moment when my father asked if they were animatronic, and upon hearing of them being CGI he was blown away.

The only real downside to this film is James Franco's acting. He's acted well in other things but unfortunately here he makes his character very bland and boring. But that doesn't matter seeing as how he is not our hero.

All in all Rise of the Planet of the Apes is one of the greatest films that I have ever seen. The story is interesting, the CGI is flawless, the soundtrack is brilliant, and our main lead is one of the most well written characters we've seen in years. And so, if at any point you have to choose this over just another Michael Bay or some other egotistical prick's overblown action flick, you should always choose the Gorilla tackling the helicopter.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I remember talking badly about the remake of the classic a while ago, but I watched this one here, and I can safely say it's way better than that last one. In today's world the filming industry or Hollywood is running out of ideas, so they result to giving us the same show but witha different look. This is one of the exceptions, instead of trying to tell the same story, this movie starts trying to expand the mythos of the planet of the apes series; although it's widely regarded as just the one film. Rise of the apes decides not to go off the lame ending of the remake and decides to try again. In this film we try and learn how did Earth turn into a ape infestited world, well it gives a good idea and it's executed well. One of the most notable features of this film is that they decide to use computer generated imagery to make the apes look real, it is sad that the make up effects have now left the series, but it' not a step back, but a stale mate. in all honesty the humans are really uninteresting, and James Franco just doesn't work with me. The actor playing Ceasar is really good though, you can just see the emotions he emits when he acts as this slowly growing ape. With interesting story ideas, decent effects, and a good lead, I wouldn't have expected such great action. The bridge scene is by far some of the best action I've seen in a while. It's not as great as something like transformers, but that doesn't matter. With all these great things to say about this movie, i'am stoked for the next one. Expand

After an un-real amount of sequels and a shoddy unneccesary remake, "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" has alot of pressure to live up to.

I have always been a big "Ape" fan and i've been chasing the movie ever since hearing it about 8 months ago, the only problems i saw it facing was 1. Being a Prequel to an All-Time Classic 2. CGI Apes.

Seeing CGI in everything nowdays i had my doubts, yet everyone will be pleased to know that the effects are very good and of course what sealed the deal for me was Andy Serkis playing the central character, Chimpanzee "Ceaser".

Andy Serkis is to Motion Capture what Ray Harryhausen was to Special Effects, I mean you know and have a feeling that an Artist was behind the camera, Serkis is in his element with this character and of course Andy has brought some of the greatest character's to life in recent cinema (Playing "Gollum" in "The Lord of the Rings" Trilogy and the Upcoming "Hobbit" movies, also having previously studied Monkeys in Aid of playing "King Kong").

Andy IS "Ceaser", playing from birth to adulthood, every movement and facial gesture is real, plus finding out that every other ape in this movie is played by a mo-cap actor, there's alot of talent behind this movie.

Will Rodman (James Franco) is a scientist testing on Chimpanzee's. His medicine which will hopefully be the "cure for Altzheimer disease", unfortunately funding is cancelled and Will is secretly asked to take care of a Chimpanzee born no less than a minute or so, which he inevtiably does.

Calling it "Caeser" Will discovers it is the baby of the most successful chimpanzee he had worked with, Ceaser brain power is double that of his mothers and Will secretly begins to continue the research at his father's house (John Lithgow), Will's father has Altzheimer's and is soon "cured" thanks to the breakthrough Will has found.

Inevitably Ceaser matures and an act of defense to it's master has Caeser eventually impounded in a Monkey preserve, run by cruel owners (among them is the boss's son played by Tom Felton of Harry Potter fame).

It is here Ceaser questions his place in the world, and his overall relationship with humans and the residing monkeys, to the point where inevitably begins to plan "change" (And that's it i'm not gonna tell you anymore, go see it).

James Franco has a very likable character about him, obviously setting himself with a daunting task, but really aside from that, the only character that leaves the biggest impression is of course "Ceaser", Freida Pinto, John Lithgow, Brian Cox and Tom Felton are all very good at what there doing but there characters do feel there and then a tad forced and obviously less memorbale,

But obviously i feel the best thing about this movie is the success, considering you have a upcoming Prequel to John Carpenters "The Thing", a Remake of "Footloose" all kinds of unneccesary reboot's and re-imaginings nowdays, to see them done well, with the style, heart and respect they deserve that i think is where "Rise of the Planets of the Apes's" greatest strength lies.

Final Verdict: After a few rocky decades "Rise" single handedly put's the Ape franchise back on top form.

Finally a good Planet of the Apes movie again. The reason is simple: less action, more character developments and better story. The CGI effects of the apes are outstanding.

Based on the original Planet Of The Apes, this remake makes a backstory of the classic. A young ape named Ceaser, raised by a drug creator which he is also tested on to make him smarter, is eventually locked up and because of that, goes crazy, bring all the other apes on his plan and starts the Ape Apocalypse!
However, there are a few flaws. Ceaser uses the same drug that made him smarter on all the other apes, and they get smarter after a couple of hours, while with Ceaser, it took 8 years to get smart. There are more flaws, but that'll just bore everyone.
This movie is Action Packed and emotional. It's amazing and I need to see Dawn of the planets of the apes ASAP!

Rise of the Planet of the Apes is a capable remake of the original "Planet of the Apes", but it falls short with copied and pasted storylines and Franco's inability to act.
