This movie is much better than the critics give it credit for, and it’s easily Blue Sky’s best movie in my opinion. So many critics point out that the plot is too cliche, by the numbers, and predictable when they analyze this movie. But IThis movie is much better than the critics give it credit for, and it’s easily Blue Sky’s best movie in my opinion. So many critics point out that the plot is too cliche, by the numbers, and predictable when they analyze this movie. But I believe that this movie has the best kind of predictability, and it has really showed me that a predictable plot doesn’t automatically mean it’s bad. The plot’s biggest strengths are in its sharp pacing and through its subtlety. Like another movie that released around this time, Megamind (Which also got an undeserved lukewarm reception from critics and released just a year earlier) Rio’s biggest strength is through its subversive characters. No scene or character feels unnecessary or wasted like in a lot of other movies at this caliber, and they all work out to forward the plot and give every character a purpose. Even the monkey sidekicks have a purpose because they crash the party and help Nigel find Blu and Jewel.

Blu and Jewel’s relationship in this movie is also excellent. Their love for each other develops very naturally, and the film doesn’t try to force anything too early between them (Even if the characters try to do so) because they stay true to themselves, and the film saves their affection for the end. And their love blossoms as a result of them understanding their different strengths and building a dynamic upon them. My only major flaw with the film is the final climax because the transition from the festival to Nigel’s final defeat feels too fast. If they put added more runtime or stakes into Blu and Jewel’s captivity on that plane, then the situation would have felt more dire and more emotionally investable.

Rio is a super underrated gem in my opinion, and didn’t need the crappy sequel that it got. I believe that more people should check this one out because for me, Rio gets better and better with every watch.

This movie is just fantastic, the way it uses parts of culture and music to create a fantastic soundtrack is amazing and such a movie makes one create a giant admiration for both the music and the birds and fauna of Brazil. It's one of my favorite movies I would definitely love to see one more to close the trilogy. Expand

There's plenty of colour and vibrancy when it comes to the animation and music, shame none was in the screenplay for this average movie.
