It is SO annoying that a film that tackles the subject of sububan unhappiness is getting such low scores from those who think it is too depressing. Life can be depressing! To assume that all films should be happy and void of emotions such as loss, fear, emptiness, sorrow and regret would make going to the movies a bore. Very rarely have I ever seen three characters so well developed as in this movie. Kate Winslet plays an aging, failing actress, while Leonardo DiCaprio plays a former soldier, now working in an office, just like his father did. The two eventually gather up the courage to realize where their lives are, in comparison to what they thought their lives would've been like. Michael Shannon plays the son of a neighbor of theirs, who is the only person who understands their situation. He is seen as crazy, and even Kate and Leo's characters start to come off that way to their friends. Each scene is so realistic, and the more you can relate to it, the stronger the emotions are. I am envious of the life of the reviewer who said this movie wasn't realistic. I feel like everybody sees themselves as special. After all, we are the stars of our own lives. This movie is about realizing you're not. It's difficult to put into words. The poignancy of the movie should speak for itself. The fact that some people don't appreciate this movie makes the movie even more real to the people who do. Even though this movie takes place in the 50's, and is a commentary to what domesticity was like back then, it is actually timeless. There will always be people who don't understand how the life that might seem ideal to most people, actually can feel like a prison to others. The former are the majority, and the people who are lucky, and will not feel this movie's pain, or the pain of the novel upon which this movie was based, while the latter are the people who could be motivated by this movie to change their own lives. One of the most devastating trials of a couple in film history. It's always honest and, certainly, painful - but we feel for these lovers like none other. Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio are magnificent.

Revolutionary Road is probably his best work since American Beauty, although I loved JarHead as well. I was deeply moved by this movie and it was extremely pressing for me. I felt almost nauseous at the movie theatre at times. It was very tragic, but sadly so true. Revolutionary road has a great cast and Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet have amazing chemistry on screen as we have seen before in Titanic over ten years ago. I was actually thinking that this movie is almost like sequel to Titanic. What if Jack wouldnt have died? I also want to give extra credit for Michael Shannon, who well deserved his Oscar nomination. In this world where societies norms dictate how people live their lives the only sane person was the the crazy person. So it raises the thought that was he even crazy or was he the only normal one in the whole film? Shannons character sums up the whole theme of the movie and he said all the things that people are afraid to say, or even think. Expand

Few people are doing what they dream about, but most stuff their disappointment, count their blessings and muddle on. In this case the couple have no financial or medical problems, two healthy children, and are barely thirty years old. Realizing (as in the case of the Kate Winslet character) that you will never be a great actress, and in the case of Frank a great something else (he admits he has no clue as to what that would have been), being a rite of passage makes it hard to sympathize with the premise that if they just moved to another country (with April working as a secretary and Leo becoming a stay at home Dad), their dreams would fall into place. I would have found the premise even more irritating had the movie not been so relentlessly depressing, from the first scene - to especially - the last. Cyanide pills all around - sheesh! Expand

An unbelievable plot, a hyper-exaggeration of suburban angst, with characterisations lacking in warmth and softness, the perfunctory callous sexual scenes unsizzlingly pornographic - as if all these things were clever or artistic to set out thus. I often like Kate Winslett's performances, in fact as she's a distant cousin I am predisposed to approve, but even that can't elevate this movie to adequacy. If you are contemplating suicide, breakup or mental breakdown, by all means go for it, it will nicely help you on your way; otherwise, do yourself a favour and stay away.
How this ever got nominated for awards is amazing to me, a testament perhaps to the "Emperor's New Clothes" effect.

As it is, thank Kathy Bates for providing the only light refreshment as the one character who appears at home in her role. The delivery is stilted and stagey and the supposedly 1950's dialogue, set and props are rife with anachronisms, at times humorously so but more often just jarring (even a bad episide of 'Mad Men" is more authentic). If you're intrigued by the possibilities of the wife's take on a well-worn Death of a Salesman theme, read the book; you won't want to after seeing the movie. Expand

'Revolutionary Road' may not be "revolutionary" and it is not perhaps a film that will be re-watched over and over by me. This said, there is so much to appreciate, there is no denying that it's incredibly well made and superbly acted. And to me and many others (though it is an understandably polarising film, the dark and unpleasant subject matter is not for everybody) it is a powerful and moving film, and one of the most realistic and truthful depictions of a struggling marriage on film.

Visually, 'Revolutionary Road' is wonderfully shot, bleak but also sumptuous, while the scenery and 50s production values are evocatively and handsomely rendered. Thomas Newman's music score is hauntingly hypnotic, achingly melancholic and at times ominous.

While at times stagy, the dialogue is insightful, making one really think about what it's saying (it has much to say and knows how to say it without preaching) and for many will wrench the gut and induce floods of tears. There is a little levity provided by Kathy Bates, that could have been ill-fitting but is pitched well. The story is deliberate, but the atmosphere is brilliantly evoked and there are many parts that have huge power and are emotionally devastating, especially in the latter parts.

Sam Mendes keeps things at an assured pace, keeps the atmosphere alive and doesn't undermine the chemistry between DiCaprio and Winslet in any way. DiCaprio and Winslet embody their roles, which are intentionally not the most likable, are very complex and very much compellingly real, and their chemistry is both tense and affecting. Winslet has the more complex one of the two and her performance is a heart-wrenching emotional roller-coaster, while DiCaprio gives an explosive turn especially in the fever pitch latter parts.

Michael Shannon proves himself to be a scene stealer as the brutally honest crazy nut, and Kathy Bates brings well-timed levity.

Overall, a powerful and moving film that is highly appreciated in many ways. 9/10 Bethany Cox

A predictable disappointment , if such a thing is possible. First, what must have seemed like shocking material in the '50s (adultery! abortion! -- all lurking just below the surface of affluent post-war suburbia) is ho-hum today. Second, Mendes is just too enamored with surfaces -- the movie should win costume and art direction Oscars -- to get at seem underbellies. As far as the performances go, you have to admire the chutzpah of casting the protagonists of one of the most iconic screen romances in cinematic history in these roles. But precisely because they have to overcome our expectations generated by Titanic, the performances call attention to themselves -- they are most definitely crafted -- in a way that I found distracting. Michael Shannon as the "village crazy who speaks the truth" has a pair of great scenes, but all said maybe Oscar got it right in largely ignoring this one. Expand

Directed by Sam Mendes, it deals with the spiritual crisis of its profoundly disenchanted lead, unhappily married and enmeshed in a financially rewarding but tremendously soul-killing suburban lifestyle, and who seeks to make a series of impractical, unrealistic, even desperate changes that irreversibly affect said character's marriage and existence (in both the philosophical and literal senses). If you guessed American Beauty, give yourself half a point...and essentially Mendes' Revolutionary Road IS American Beauty, less 44 years in time and ALL the humor (except, curiously, in the movie's final image). Kevin Spacey's iconic Lester Burnham from the 1999 blockbuster undergoes a sex change operation, emerging as April Wheeler (Kate Winslet), who feels that time has totally passed her by, that her potential has been squandered, and that her only choice is to uproot her corporate-drone husband Frank (Leonardo DiCaprio, whose developing facial blockiness really serves him well here) and seldom-seen kids and reinvent herself in Paris, considered the hot spot for bohemian freedom in 1955. (One essental difference between April and Lester: 1955 middle-class life being what it was, it's comparably far more difficult for April to "rule"!) The two central performances are certainly powerful enough that after the knock-down drag-out that occurs in the first 10 minutes, you'll stop associating the stars with Titanic, and you definitely won't be humming any Celine Dion tunes as you leave the theater. The supporting work, particularly by Kathy Bates as a chatty Realtor who acts as one of the status quo's many guardians, and Michael Shannon as her institutionalized and lobotomized son who nevertheless sees things far more clearly than the "sane" people (a cliche even when novelist Richard Yates devised him in 1961), is fine, and Mendes' direction, though less flamboyantly "theatrical" than his 3 preceding films (with a couple of notable, carefully-chosen exceptions) makes all the right choices. But will America embrace this the same way it did American Beauty? Doubt it, and not just because it's a period piece (special note to moviegoers born after 1975: in the 1950s it was considered perfectly acceptable for pregnant women to smoke like chimneys and drink like fishes, and nobody objected, not even doctors) but because Lester and Carolyn Burnham really spoke to a great many viewers in Mena Suvari's age range (and in all fairness, struck many others as superficial and obvious, but those individuals are WRONG!) It's more likely that Revolutionary Road will be admired at arm's length than truly loved; more likely than not, a typical response to April's plight will be, "Screw existential frustration; with the economy the way it is right now, she should be damn thankful her husband has a job. ANY job!" While American Beauty accurately painted a picture of many young viewers' parents, it's doubtful that Revolutionary Road, as artfully presented and absorbing as it is, will have much to say to under-25s...OR their folks. Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet are brilliant in the leads, while Michael Shannon repeatedly stole scenes here in a stellar performance. This film's writing is out of this world as it crafts some seriously deep characters with relatable personas and, somehow, all of this relationship tension really makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand. Somehow Mendes managed to craft almost a thriller at times with the way the drama here made you sit on the edge of your seat waiting to see what happened next. Ultimately, Revolutionary Road is a gut punch that picks you up and punches you in the gut repeatedly. It is a film that will leave you feeling entirely depressed, but damn is it ever a good movie with even better acting and writing. Revolutionary Road is a success also due to its authenticity and the way it holds back no punches and is yet another stellar entry to Mendes' filmography. Expand

That would be a shame, because you would be missing out on one heck of a dramatic film. Leonardo DiCaprio gives, in my opinion, his absolute best performance and it's a real shame he wasn't nominated for an Academy Award. At least Kate Winslet was, her performance also comes off as riveting and powerful. I have not read the book nor do I read many books that some movies are based off on, but this film kept me engaged throughout regardless if it lives up to its source material. Expand

I did not watch it till this 2013. I was afraid it could be be too slow paced or boring... but nothing like that. If it had been like the first minutes it would have been too monotonous, but it keeps developing and it grows and grows, slowly making you feel the characters. By the last part of the movie it is already in your mind, like those films you feel you´ve watching something so good. After it ends it sticks with you. Too many real situations like many related in the film. Marriage like I´ve never seen it before in a film and many more things: family, love, envy, depression, desperation, many things. I love when a film has these long scenes with just dialogue and the actors doing amazing jobs. So good. Kate Winslet and DiCaprio are equally great, I would not put any of them above the other. The supporting cast is so on point too. Totally recommendable. Expand

For example one critic exclaims “It’s unbecoming — and it should be worked out in private, not in a movie theater.” another claims.“This is a movie about two people in pain; the last thing they need is for Mendes to turn his cool camera on them.” This is a serious depiction the disintegration of a marriage. Why should we be expecting musical numbers? Are we so used to “everything will work out” American movies with big name stars that we now demand successful conclusions? If you have, you ever sat through a Holocaust film or a movie involving a dog named Yeller you know the eternal truth . This is not going to end well.

Kate Winslet gives an outstanding performance; this should surprise no one. (The fact she actually keeps her top on, for once, may raise a few eyebrows however among a disappointed throng.) Leonardo DiCaprio’s performance is her equal in every way; and there is no denying in those 15 odd years after Titanic that these two stars have even more chemistry than before. The rest of the cast is also beyond top notch with Kathy Bates as a venomous realtor, a particular stand out. Sam Mendes’ direction also shines. He keeps the camera pointed at both the actors and seemingly their characters souls. In addition nobody uses focus and character placement better than Mendes. Each frame seems its own work of art

The plot is simple. Winslet and DiCapiro are married with two kids. He works in a dead end job in Manhattan, while she takes care of the kids and lives in quiet desperation in suburbia. If there is a problem with the set-up, it is that women in the audience may be noticeably envious of Winslet’s lifestyle while the men may hanker for a do nothing, three martinis, fling with the secretary, job. Life in the fifties, at least for the white, upper middle class, does not seem very bad on the surface. That said the yearning and the subsequent disastrous consequences seem all too true. Winslet and DiCapiro fight like real couples do. Starting small and quickly hitting at each other’s hot buttons. Winslet has the emotion heft in the arguments, and comes across as the stronger person; wounded by life. DiCapiro, ironically, only has the fact he is right to keep him afloat. (Moving to Paris would solve nothing, he is as trapped as she is, and neither of them is special.)

I do have a couple of nitpicks with Revolutionary Road. The conveniently disappearing children are a problem. Director Mendes trots them out for a few scenes in the middle of the film but honestly, they are never underfoot, and as real children is when marriages disintegrate. In addition, that fact that Winslet’s Stepford wife routine does not raise DiCaprio’s eyebrows towards the end of the film raised my eyebrows. He seemed a little more clued enduring the proceeding to let that pass by unnoticed. I did recognize the arguments that couples have, as well as the quandary of following your dreams rather than being happy with whom you are. (Following your bliss can lead to much misery in real life; both for yourself and those that love you.) Then again, we have only one life, so how should we spend it. I do not see this argument between flights of fantasy and a practical life being solved anytime soon. However, as short as our time on Earth is, I cannot help but recommend spending two hours of it in the company of Winslet and DiCapiro. Revolutionary Road is simply one of the best films of 2008.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Just watched this a 2nd time and my impression that it's underrated was confirmed. A movie is not a book, agreed, but this is a careful adaptation of the 1961 novel. The film is anchored by 4 brilliant performances, Kathy Bates and Michael Shannon in addition to Winslet and DiCaprio. Those who haven't seen it should be warned: the 2nd half gets very sad. Movies about a marriage gone wrong are hard to get right and often difficult to sit through. Somehow this one manages to get all elements in synch and this viewer was in awe. Unusually good and it holds up well the 2nd time. Expand

This film was just painful to watch and toward the end I was just hoping one the main characters would commit suicide so that I could get to the end credits. From the very beginning the miserable protagonists were engaged in realistic and visceral arguments, but I felt no attachment toward them whatsoever. The clear mental instability of Kate Winslet's character also precluded any sympathy toward her and just infuriated me. Michael Shannon's supporting role was definitely a highlight, but certainly not enough to redeem this pointless, miserable film. Revolutionary Road

3 And A Half Out Of 5

Revolutionary Road is a character driven feature of a couple who thrives to survive each with all the tactics they can think of. The chemistry among the characters seemed mandatory to be excellent and palpable but the makers wisely gave them an edgy tone to fill their skills in and flaunt it like never before. It is rich on technical aspects like costume, production and art design, cinematography, and editing although is short on background score and sound department. The writing is adaptive, fast-paced and elaborative which makes one of the best combinations of all time to lock the untold mystery. The adaptation by Justin Haythe is smart if not gripping and thought-provoking and sensible if not engaging. Sam Mendes; the director, aces in executing such an eerie plot and its his brilliant perspective that makes it intriguing enough to invest in it. The performance is scored majestically by the lead couple (Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet) in their parallel roles and is supported thoroughly by an amazing cast like Kathy Bates, Kathryn Hahn and Michael Shannon. Revolutionary Road does not only revolutionizes the genre but redefines it in its own terms that is exhilarating as much as dark.

Intense and uncomfortable, this film dissects the end of a marriage like no other.

I heard so much about this film that I felt compelled to see it, especially considering that it is directed by Sam Mendes (one of the great directors of today) and starred by Kate Winslet and Leo DiCaprio, two extraordinary actors. Everything seemed to be an excellent film… and what I came to find is more than enough to satisfy my expectations.

The film is a family drama set in a 1950s suburb, one of the most interesting decades to address these issues given the rapid changes in the lives and habits of American families, and the obsession with appearances and the perfect life, the which is particularly palpable in suburban families, always worried about what their neighbors will think. The script for this film introduces us to a family that couldn't function worse: after a quick and fleeting infatuation, the couple Frank and April Wheeler couldn't be more unhappy, enduring a conflicted marriage, jobs they hate and a suburban life that, inwardly, they despise. Eager to change her life, April asks them to move to Paris, France, but several events delay the trip as their marriage falls apart.

This is a hard and difficult film, which tackles two main themes in a caustic and uncomfortable way: the first and most important is marriage, especially those accommodating and loveless marriages, which go on supporting each other year after year. The film highlights the differences, sometimes irreconcilable, between the characters so much that it is anti-romantic. The second major theme to be addressed is the modus vivendi of suburban American families in the Fifties, with their hypocrisies and obsession with appearances and the perfect life. Sam Mendes, by the way, did a similar critical exercise a few years earlier, in “American Beauty”.

Kate Winslet and Leo DiCaprio are the featured actors in this film. They've been great friends since they starred in "Titanic" and their friendship was the basis of a fruitful collaboration, in which both always ask for more and better each other, aware of their abilities and the excellent chemistry they manage to maintain, making the scenes of love in poetry and giving the most tense scenes a palpable electricity. Winslet was particularly committed, convinced that the film was a good idea. She was responsible for the participation of her friend DiCaprio, to whom she gave a copy of the script. The result is one of the most intense, complex and powerful works of her acting career. She also wanted to draw attention to the dialogue, particularly when the two characters fight. There are truly powerful phrases, with a cruel harshness that is hard to hear but exudes credibility. There are also good performances by actors like Michael Shannon or David Harbour, but always in the third plan.

The film is not very long, but it develops quickly, and in the first few minutes you realize what lies ahead: Sam Mendes shows us a tough marital fight full of sarcasm early on, setting the pace to the film and developing as well as the characters, as well as the social background through which they move. The sets and costumes are excellent and reproduce very well the suburban environment of the time, with the standardization of life and tastes, men dressed almost identically, women with long skirts and the one always worried about her home and her husband. The mentality of the time and the social context are part of the film as if they were another character: if we consider that that marriage failed because of the cowardice of not defying the conventions with an exciting trip to a country where they could live life without so many rules, the villain ends up being the hypocritical and restrictive social environment where they lived.

Its also about claustrophobia, self doubt and frustration. There are some fairly intense scenes with the couple arguing and it struck me that it would perhaps make more sense if viewed as a play, rather than a film as such perhaps. I thought the incidental (background) music was quite good - its a fairly atmospheric watch at times. Its also quite raw and unsettling as well. It makes you question whats going on behind what you see, i.e. the facade. This isn't the most fast paced, exciting type watch, if your into action films and the like but for a film of this type, about a couples clashing over what their future holds and whats best for them, this is quite a decent film and overall I would recommend it, yes.
