The makeup especially the infected makeup was exceptional. The performances from Kaya Scodelario, Marina Mazepa, Hannah John-Kamen, Avan Jogia, Neal McDonough, Chad Rook, and Tom Hopper were excellent. The visual effects were pretty good specially the licker and William's infected form. The only flaw I'd say was a couple of times the writing specifically the dialogue was a little cheesy. Overall I really loved it and enjoyed it more then the original movies. Expand

However, it is a faithful transposition of the first two games of the Capcom saga, with some interesting visual flickers and some narrative license. Overall, Johannes Roberts' film lets itself be watched despite not being the most memorable of the cinematic tie-ins nor the best of the genre zombie movies: it is exactly in the middle, with the same grammar of horror and the mythology of the beloved. This movie well adapted from its source material. In seeing the other criticism, I’m convinced this might be one of the few video game movies where sticking to the source material gets held against it. This is the backstory I always wanted.

Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City was very good! I enjoyed it!

Yes it is different than the video games ongoing storyline. It feels like a "What If" world in some ways. I feel like the differences are to keep long time RE fans like myself guessing. Giving us a bit of a newer journey as well as casual movie goers.

While this movie is more faithful over all compared to the Alice RE movies, it isn't an exact live action copy of the RE games. It is it's own universe. Much like Marvel movies compared to the comics they are based off of. The actors did a great job. The characters feel a little different than their video game counterparts, but they fit well in this movie version. You can still envision the characters we know and love though! There is still a lot they do and how they act that feels on point. They did pretty amazing on the environment and the music is fun.

There are a lot of easter eggs, references and attention to details through out the movie as well. Enjoyable fan service for sure!

I will say I feel like older RE fans will enjoy this movie more than casual movie goers. As we fans can pick up on the things mentioned directly above. But that is not to say casual movie goers won't enjoy it. It's fun regardless and it's a new beginning to a new universe based off the ongoing video game story we fans love. So can still be enjoyed as a brand new experience fan of the games or not.
But for fans it is nostalgia with twists.

I hope it does well and we get a sequel or maybe more. It's fun and they can do so many different things since it isn't canon to the games. A world of "What Ifs"!

I truly believe it followed the games a lot more than people are saying it did. There were lots of small and big intricate moments that really pieced many things together from the Resident Evil 1 & 2 games. The end credits set up the 3rd game for the sequel movie. Also, it was a lot scarier than I thought it would be, which was much appreciated. Was it perfect? No. I will say, I do wish they would have made the first movie based off of some beginning stuff and more of the first game instead of rushing to get both games in so the character's development could have been a little better. Leon needed to be better portrayed and there was an overuse of the F word in many of the characters, which was pointless and a lack of script lines. BUT, it was honestly overall a very good movie and has me very eager for the sequel Expand

But do give props to the director trying to tie it close to the game’s universe one way or another. And owing to the fact that the reboot has a much smaller budget that the Project: Alice series, we cannot evidently say that the movie is a flop but I can wholeheartedly say that the reboot has successively done its job very impressively well.

We must also take into consideration that COVID-19 doesn’t allow for a full house due to safety measures in place but for me it was all marked seats taken on that night I went to watch; even the front row wasn’t spared.

No one should ever criticise a film just because of casting decisions or because they didn’t follow the original lore. In the end it’s up to the director to make the last say. With a small budget it’s not like he can pull off a Sonic the Hedgehog movie incident and change the character or in this case the whole cast lineup. And this will result in costly reshoots and delays.

Honestly, I had doubts before I watched the film but after it ended, I immediately made plans to watch it again on my next available day off and get the Blu-Ray on release. Yes; I enjoyed it. And no one shall tell me to say that it sucks…when they never even watched it themselves.

I liked this actually more than the Mila J, series of films. As I was looking at RCPD building, visuals and environment I had pleasant memories surfacing of the original RE 1 game. Some casting choices were strange, I particularly didn't like the police chief and Jill Valentine, but regardless, I was able to enjoy this movie from beginning to end. I'd like to highlight the character of Effy (I know that's not your name, darling, but you'll always be Effy to me, no matter the role) She played the role of Claire Redfield very well. Some things could have been better, but all in all the singular description comes to my mind regarding the movie that it was faithfully adapted the RE1 game, that's a win in my book. Well done. I just decided to check it out since I’ve been a fan of the series since I was a kid, and I loved it. Sure the CGI isn’t the best and the third act is rushed but it’s a unique spin on things, I went in with a open mind and loved it, The controversy with the actors skin colour is dumb, this movie didn’t have any political undertones, and the actors that played them acted like their characters I’d say. Just Leon is a bit of a dumbass and the comic relief character wish they did more with him. But overall it’s a very interesting spin, and loved the scenes where the characters interacted and bonded. Don’t go in expecting all scenes from re1 and 2 like the puzzles or all of the bosses, it would be boring anyways watching people do puzzles and walk around for and hour and a half. It’s a fun B rated zombie flick with cheesy lines, some cringe moments , and funny moments and truly iconic scenery. The acting was all pretty good given what they were going for.

As per adaptation its a disappointment, the cgi is cartoonish most of the time and the final act is literally the worst, The characters were amazing although "leon" felt like a joke others were decent, The story was decent and the theme/environment of the movie the darkness and grim was amazing, the music is good the jump scares and pacing was good and the zombie's and killings were little but awesome, The previous resident evil had the charm and fun This felt serious and little gamelike, The consideration of this movie as a part one and sequels in mind makes this little rushed although the whole runtime right from the start the tone and constant thrills were awesome, The starting bus scene and the police station fight and the house fight was amazing, The orphanage's friend thing and connections were good and the final act it was just a major let down, The scientist's stuff and all went crazy and the escape at last just like that with it the rocket launcher scene it was terrible end to the thrillingly entertataing 1st 2 half's. Overall It was a Thrillingly entertaining and a decent movie! Expand

Not bad, first one without Alice though. Racoon city now has since been destroyed now. They start to find out what's underneath the city.

There they tried to copy a couple of characters, they invented a couple, and then it generally looked like an author's movie about Mila, but not based on the game. For me, all the films that Paul W. S. Anderson made on Resident Evil are a completely separate look at the game, he came up with something of his own, which was watchable during the first 2 films, where something else was like at least out of the corner of his eye on games, but then he broke through the bottom and starting from the 3rd part it was incomprehensible fantasy and rare references, but had nothing to do with games. Half of the main characters became just dummy bots, heroes of the 2nd-3rd and 4th plan, which finally killed the franchise in the end, because the main character is a fictional Alice, and the locations were constantly changing and only mixed the logic of the films more, turning them more into some kind of then a series without a plot, where each part is a separate plot, like in 'Friends', but obviously not like in the film adaptation of one of the most popular games.

In the same film, almost everything corresponds to the atmosphere and plot of the game, and with minimal discrepancies, while even the fact that the appearance of the actors does not cosplay the characters is a huge plus, it makes it easier to perceive that this is a film, and not just frame-by-frame reshooting of scripted scenes between levels of the game.

I really liked the picture, special thanks for the costumes close to the game, locations and of course the incredible atmosphere, because in the original game, in the remakes - the main feature of the game has always been a creepy dark atmosphere, screamers from around the corner, etc.

Unlike what Anderson shows us, here even unenlightened people will understand the plot - since the characters partially voice it and make it clear what kind of city it is, what is happening here and what their motivation is, and not just “I am a villain”, “A I am a hero, I will save everyone.” In general, the film is not perfect, but definitely better than what was before and certainly deserves a sequel, which I would definitely like to see in the context of the game scenarios, and not incomprehensibly what “based on the game with my wife in the lead role”.

Great adaptation. Nailed the atmosphere. Story a bit rushed and some things were translated oddly and poorly. But overall a fun Romero esque zombie movie more inspired by resident evil than anything.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Resident evil welcome to Raccoon city is a pretty good film. While not completely faithful the film has some great horror moments and some Easter eggs and callbacks to the first two games. Out of all the cast I like Claire and Chris the most. I kinda feel like they dropped the ball with some of the characters. Mainly being Wesker and Leon. While Leon is entertaining he was made way too stupid in this film. Jill is still a badass . I kinda dig the changes they made with the story regarding Chris and Claire. And while the CGI isn’t great the film does give some genuine scares and has some funny moments. Expand

They should had started with the Mansion, then do RE2 in the city and the Police station. Not sure why they decided to mix game stories into a single movie and i can't say i agree with that. Some characters do look like their video game personas like Chris, while others don't even resemble them at all (Leon and Jill) and these two personalities were a bit off, since Jill was a bit too psychotic in the movie, while Leon feels a rather clumsy. Claire also looks much older than what she was supposed to be. But apart from those minor issues the movie does ok job at giving fan service, which is in my opinion always good. 6.5 for me, is an ok movie that is not very memorable but entertains you while it lasts. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There's some good stuff here if you are willing to overlook the butchering of lore and characters. For example Chief Irons is coward (pretty much his only bad trait) in this, funny but absolutely nothing like his character. I will go through "some" lore differences real quick and the characters:

Chris Redfield: He doesn't really act like Chris, he doesn't believe Claire at all which later prompts William Birkin to call him dumb and her smart. He also is very childish having a back and forth shhhh with Claire, he not Wesker in this leads the unnamed Team (Team Bravo seems only to consist of Marini and Dewey here with Richard with the "Alpha" team we know minus Barry). He has some good moments but runs and tries to take on William Birkin but instead gets saved by Claire in mere seconds (Claire saving people tends to be a running theme). Here instead of being born and raised in New York, and taking care of Claire like in the books he with Claire was born and raised in Racoon City and after their parents died lived at the Orphanage there headed by William Birkin. Later Claire escapes and Chris basically gets raised and put to school and Airforce by Birkin and Umbrella, a stark change. He also has a thing for Jill in this which in the games is never shown beyond being a partner.

Claire Redfield: Here she meets Lisa at the Orphanage briefly and then escapes it leaving Chris behind for 5 yrs, this means that Claire has not in this learned her skills from Chris but just mysteriously happens to have learned on her own to the point she knows more than new but actually professionally trained rookie transfer Leon about weapons. She seems to act older than Chris and much smarter in this. Despite barely knowing or seeing Lisa somehow they formed a bond by Claire just seeing her and asking her name just to read it off the arm band. She's also to nonchalant in this. For example when the Re2 trucker hits what they think is a person (a zombie who just disappears for the rest of the movie) she just gets out says lets wrap up the body and have my police officer brother help. After the body disappears there's just a brief nonchalant comments about it. This seems very contrary to her Re2 motherly persona. Her character is fine other than this except when she basically is in to much in the forefront. Instead of looking for Chris due to losing contact with him after the Spencer Mansion incident and thus looking for him, she just disappeared after escaping the Orphanage for 5 yrs and decides to visit him to show him info for some reason Ben Bertolucci decides to give to her. In which Chris doesn't believe her and basically gives her money, tells her he is going to work, not to mess his bike up and get out. Weird.

Leon S. Kennedy: Worst character in this. His backstory is completely rewritten almost entirely. He's not actually a brand new rookie recruit, he's actually a new "transfer" who accidentally shot his partner in the butt in his previous precint. His dad is also a hot shot cop. This seems to be why he is a cop instead of the incidents of the murders in the Arklay Mountain's giving him motivation due to a strong sense of Justice to join the force. Unlike this movie Leon was seen as an intelligent and gifted rookie. His training officers being none other than Rita and Kevin Ryman from Resident Evil Outbreak. Rita who assisted Marvin to help save the people of the RPD and Kevin being a main character and exceptional Marksman who took a pivotal role in the events on the frontlines. Leon in this movie gets saved multiple times and doesn't really do anything until the very end via one rocket Launcher. Claire has to save and carry him twice. Claire also has to help him learn how to use the shotgun, and he gets tricked and basically blackmailed easily by a jailed Ben Bertolucci.

Wesker: Wesker doesn't look anything like his counterpart, never gets his glasses, doesn't lead Team Alpha, plays around with the others like a typical team member. Has not worked for Umbrella and though contacted by a rich group to take information in the Spencer Mansion for a high price doesn't know that group either. He also doesn't seem to have any connections whatseover with the Wesker experiments nor does he even know William Birkin. Like the other's carries their characters title in name only. After betraying his group by leaving them behind to get the virus from Birkin, he shoots Birkin and Annette. Gets shot by Jill over Sherry and dies regretting things after making a joke.

Jill Valentine: She doesn't look anything like Jill and she really doesn't have much of a personality. She's just shown being incredible in marksmanship, has a thing for Wesker stated (which is completely contrary to her game character btw) and pretty much bland. She does go a tad overboard in things but besides that not much to say.

Overall it was meh, as long as you don't take it seriously have expectations it would be faithful it can pass the time I guess.

The Anderson series of films catered much more for fans of the Transformers action movies. The CGI animated series of films caters for anime fans. This pretty much caters for horror fans and I do hope that they turn this into a series. Casting is good, directing is good, cinematography is great, writing is uneven at best. The backstory is probably the dullest imaginable. Two what the heck moments? That strobe sequence? The Silent Hill siren? There’s plenty of fan service which makes me wonder who this is aimed at? Very much reminded me in style to Ty West (and a little bit of Eli Roth) and Sam Raimi. It also took be back to Forest of the Damned (2005) but much better! Maybe they would have done better taking all the elements that made the original games great and starting a new story whilst still including fan service. Expand

+Some fun b movie moments

In the overcrowded genre of zombie action movies, sadly 'Resident evil welcome to raccoon city' fails far more often than it succeeds. The city itself feels more like a town and as cheesy as the original games were, at least the basics of logic were in place where here these basics are oddly missing. We are quickly introduced to a town bereft of common sense filled instead with sociopaths. The lead cast from the games are here spouting needless amounts of exposition and regularly stating each others full names in their sentences. It feels more like a parody. Its a shame as this could've been an opportunity to really capture the feel of the games and bring it to the live action world. That said it is watchable enough to pass time. It only just about works as a mindless b movie horror with all the usual tropes that go along with it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I apologize in advance if it sounds like an incoherent rant, I just need to get this out of my system~

I'm on the fence about this one because as a die-hard fan of Resident Evil, I was really looking forward to a movie that followed the games entirely. Honestly, a few reviews are about the actors they chose but I actually grew to love the actors for Jill and Leon. The biggest problem for me was how much they changed in order to fill 2 games into 1 movie. They glossed over multiple things such as Jill's background and they switched the role of "Greatest Lockpicker" to Claire instead of Jill, which didn't make much sense. The Spencer Mansion seemed dumbed down, which I can understand since it's huge in the game, but it still would've been nice to see it in all its glory. Also, the fact they just waltzed into it was quite disappointing since the chase, in the beginning, is what gets you excited to play the game (or in this case, watch the movie). And who the hell said, "Let's replace Barry with Richard"? Richard isn't even on the Alpha team and they didn't bother adding the Bravo team into the movie, presumably because it wasn't in the budget to find an actor for Rebecca, or they just couldn't find room for her in the story. I'd also guess the reason they didn't add Barry is that Wesker didn't manipulate him into being a good little soldier because they didn't even bother adding the whole "Wesker is evil and selfish and he also the ex-partner of Dr. Birkin" which was probably the thing that pissed me off the most. Also, who decided to make this a love story between Wesker and Jill??? I thought we all agreed that Wesker's heart is cold and dark and he is incapable of love so why was this even a thing. They even had the audacity to make Leon look like an idiot. This whole movie feels pointless because they joined 2 games that have months in between them. The only reason Claire goes to Raccoon City in RE2 is to find Chris after the events of RE1. This might've completely ruined the chances for a Code Veronica movie, which is one I want to see more than anything. Another thing is Annette seems oblivious to Williams's work like what?? Girl aren't you also an Umbrella Researcher, how tf are you in the dark on this. I'm also confused about Claire and Chris's backstory. I know it was never really confirmed how their parents died and what happened to them afterward until they grew up but like Umbrella Orphanage? Really? How canon is that? It may sound dumb, but I want everything in the movie to be exactly the same and it's sort of uncomfortable having new information come out that isn't from the mouth of Shinji Mikami. Lastly, it hurts to see Chris and Claire literally hate each other but whatever. Let this be a warning to all you RE fans, you might be disappointed but you might enjoy it. Overall, I had a blast watching it and pointing out the easter eggs but as always, there was things they could improve on.

I'm unsure if it's true or not but I heard they only made this movie to keep the rights to Resident Evil which, if it's true, makes me furious. We deserve a team of people who actually give a sh*t about the games and strive to make a movie we can all enjoy.

If you go in expecting any more than a masterpiece, you'll be disappointed..

I went into this film, expecting utter garbage like Paul W.S Anderson's films. But I came out of the theater with a smile on my face, because though it may be flawed.. It's one hell of a ride.

THE GOOD
- A faithful adaptation that pays a lot of fan service
- Entertaining zombie action
- It's got a bit of style

THE BAD
- Pacing issues (and too slow of a buildup)
- Predictable and unoriginal
- Clunky CGI (Though in some spots it does look great for it's 25,000,000$ budget)
- Mediocre cinematography (with the lighting and the costumes, it blends together, giving the illusion that this is all a fan-film with a budget below 100,000$)
- Not enough character development/depth
- Clumsy and stupid characters
- Mediocre performances
- Overall, flimsy, shallow writing

If the film didn't take so long with it's buildup, we could've possibly seen more big plot points (from the game) that didn't make it into the film (that should've been there).

You can tell Roberts is a big fan of the games, but he seemed to be stressing over how to adapt Resident Evil to the big screen. But, I'd say watch it. If you love horror and the games, you may or may not be disappointed.

You could hardly blame Sony Pictures and Constantin given how much money they made though. The one silver lining was that fans of the source material might finally get a movie with a little fidelity. It's no secret that Paul W.S. Anderson's hexalogy had almost nothing to do with the games it was supposedly based on. He might have borrowed a monster design or a name here and there, but for the most part created his own mutated beast complete with an original protagonist and everything.

Well, upon having now watched this revival of the franchise's cinematic half I can state for certain that gamers have at long last received an adaptation that actually has something to do with the stuff they've played. The heroes are all familiar faces like Leon Kennedy, Jill Valentine, and Chris Redfield while the story sees them uncovering the secrets of Spencer Mansion and, of course, surviving the outbreak in Raccoon City. Both locations found in the original two PS1 classics. It even fully embraces the property's horror roots by going heavy on the scare attempts rather than just focusing primarily on the action like its predecessors did. Unfortunately, all this faithfulness is kind of wasted given that the feature presentation itself isn't very good.

When the characters are shooting their way through the undead to try and escape their doomed town, it's alright. Things go straight down the toilet though the second someone opens their mouth, usually to utter a line of profanity, or the narrative tries to give an explanation behind the whole scenario. The writing is just so bad with the new takes on the cast turning some members of it into bumbling idiots for an intended comedic effect that feels wildly out of place, as well as there being elements that make no sense like how the entire police force is the only portion of the local population to be unaffected by the "Umbrella" pharmaceutical company's deranged experiment for some reason.

There are aspects I can praise. The set design is fantastic with a lot of interesting little details to pick out in the backgrounds. Every environment manages to capture a vibe and atmosphere that reminded me of what terrifying Playstation gems I have managed to play, such as the first Silent Hill, and watching the survivors battle groups of great looking zombies in their cramped interiors can be genuinely tense as Johannes Roberts has a knack for crafting unsettling scenarios. The score is also fantastic. It's got some serious issues with the plotting and dialogue however, and they're enough to derail the entire experience.

Perhaps this will go over better with someone who has a greater appreciation for the works that inspired it. Personally, I've only ever touched the 5th, 6th, and Revelations spin-off titles so I'm sure the majority of the Easter Eggs and parts recreated onscreen missed their intended mark with me. Still, even if you do manage to pick up on everything that doesn't change the fact that it's largely cheap fan service in lieu of legitimate quality. Not saying that isn't enough to provide a good time, but in my mind it can't save this from somehow being the worst Resident Evil flick. I'd be down to attend a sequel regardless.

From 2002 to 2017 the world had 6 Resident Evil films starring Milla Jovovich.
15 long years of mediocre movies that really had nothing to do with the video game beyond some characters and of course, the zombies.

Now with only 4 years apart we have a reboot that tries to be more faithful to the source material and it shows, but splashes the good details with an unsuccessful execution, turbulent action and sloppy storytelling.

The merit that at the same time becomes a disadvantage is that Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, pretends to offer fan service instead of creating a true horror film that can stand on its own, and above all separate itself from the shadow of the video game.

You can be part of a franchise and still have your own identity, but while the director goes about giving little easter eggs that will only satisfy people who recognize them, he forgot to create a film that actually deserves to be seen for its best elements, instead of trying to sell itself with the poor and basic components of what it ultimately attempts.

Since the writing of the video game series is always stumbling from being fascinating to making you feel like you are made fun of for taking it serious, cleaning it up is a good idea, and some consistency would have gone a long way.

Instead the movie is namedropping characters and locations like a Hollywood hopeful at their first party, but that's only a problem if you came for the fanservice.

A few years, and a few billion zombies in dozens of movies and series and games ago, this would have been a decent movie, even though it kind of loses both pacing and plot in the second half. It's not bad-bad, it's just borderline impossible to impress any audience old enough to be allowed to watch this since they grew up with a steady diet of the undead. And since it's also certainly not shakespearean drama, or great acting, or comes up with anything even remotely challenging, seeking the mediocre middel-ground right at the center, it's really hard to feel like you haven't been wasting your time, and money. Watch this at home if you really have nothing better to do.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie was a completely convoluted and bloody mess. Inaccurate character depictions with a riddled and confusing cast as well as a half-assed story. Half Indian Leon, Latina Jill... What is this? Jill is a half French, half Japanese woman with an American nationality whilst Leon is a Caucasian/American white man. Was is that hard to find accurate character depictions? I thought Paul Anderson already chose them.
Onto the story itself, it tried to balance between two different video games but failed so miserably. The main plot takes place between the zombie infested Raccoon City and the Spencer Mansion yet it feels like they accomplish almost nothing. The STARS units have a group therapy session in the RPD then head off to the mansion to dwindle one by one by some of the worst zombie designs I've ever seen whilst the other RPD characters do nothing but twiddle their thumbs, go to an orphanage, cry about a tape then suddenly teleport to the Spencer mansion to assist the STARS units - which, by the way, Chris is depicted as a RPD Cop instead of a STARS unit like, how the hell did you mess that up? I also hate how the entire city is linked by underground tunnels. Jill, Wesker, and Chris were depicted okay I guess but Wesker looked totally off without his iconic shades until the post-credit scene - which was abhorrent as it was the only time we saw Ada Wong who gave him a Prototype Virus unlike the game where Wesker injects it to himself in the underground Spencer lab before being impaled by the tyrant, which was also not seen in the movie.
I have no words for Leon... He's simply put: a moronically loud, constantly swearing idiot who can't do a single thing aside shoot a rocket launcher at the end of the movie for fanservice - which the fans hated.
The movie also felt like it was constantly pushing for the next objective without properly explaining the reason: like why Leon and Claire went to the Spencer mansion or why Claire and Chris met up before Code Veronica happening.

Birkin was a waste of time that added nothing to the movie. His "NEST Lab" was a complete joke. It was a tiny room with some lab equipment. We saw nothing of any Umbrella facilities like the games where Birkin was housing his extremely dangerous and contagious virus that Annette was also protecting via their high authority status in Umbrella. Instead, the lab was a pathetic room. Birkin mutates using the g virus however we only see G Phase 1 and 3, but they're so underwhelming that he shouldn't have mutated at all. Annette Birkin in the movie is far more motherly than her video game counterpart since all she does is nurture Sherry, hold a gun against Wesker then get shot in the forehead. That is all. Sherry Birkin sees her parents die then sides with the killers and head off to the train.

I honestly have no idea what the hell they were thinking with this movie, its a joke that they even released it. Its currently at $32 million in gross revenue, which leaves them with a 1.3x profit from a $25 million production budget... That's quite sad compared to what they used to earn with the, still bad but more profitable, Milla Jovovich RE movies.

Now, I'll say some positives. The costumes, sets, and locations were done somewhat decently. For the first time in a horror movie, "let's split up" was rejected... Wow.
The amount of easter eggs was way too much and were easily spotted, but still refreshing to see them actually take SOME things from the games at least.
I'm a little curious to see what they're going to do with Wesker now that he's been given the Prototype virus and Ada Wong is in the cast. We could be seeing a RE 4/5/6 movie but I dread to see those movies made because they're so long and complex that I fear they'd be even worse than this movie since they failed to recreate a, somewhat, easy plot from PS1 games. Really upsetting writing this in such a negative way seeing that I've been an RE fan since RE4, but that's how it is. Maybe one day Capcom will greenlight a good RE movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie both insults your intelligence and the Resident Evil series, all while wasting quality set design and cinematography. This movie will please no one and at the same time waste credible talent.

This is basically the standard Hollywood "video game movie" of the Resident Evil remakes which have met with tremendous success over the last 5 years. To say it's lazy is a massive understatement, this pretty much is just cashing in on that success. There are references and nods to the originals forced in with little or no thought from the "Jill sandwich" in the diner to the RE2 keys in the orphanage. While the old RE movies took the games and threw them out of the window, this movie has clearly done the research but just doesn't care to do anything interesting at all with it. To say it's "faithful" is just a massive **** you to the intelligence of the viewer and the fan. It isn't. That's why more than anything this movie, and the director DESERVE the **** reviews. It's incredibly unfortunate that real work went into this movie.

A lot of the changes are just the standard leftist revisionism. Every white male character must be a douchebag, incompetent or a bumbling buffoon. Every female character must be a flawless badass. Very standard character beats for the typical "woke" movie. If that's all you need to know then you can rest assured you're missing absolutely nothing else and can continue with your search for something decent to watch.

The CGI is incredibly, incredibly bad. I watched an interview with the director where someone remarked that the RE mansion would be great on film. How ironic for it to be arguably the most butchered thing in the movie. When they first walk into the mansion it is JARRINGLY terrible CGI. Why they thought they would do that in CGI is beyond me. They immediately switch to a physical set afterwards which is just baffling. Another scene with the RPD reception is as bad. I can only reason this movie went through complete production hell.

What's so annoying is the set design, cinematography, and shot composition are all amazing largely thanks to some John Carpenter fans working on this. I can only imagine those poor souls had to fight tooth and nail for this not to be a complete disaster for all involved. If the entire movie had been CGI, you wouldn't have been able to release it.

At the same time they are battling a director hell bent on turning it into an action movie.

The director has no idea how to use horror or imagery. It's all just gawky terrible jump scares with imagery/references from RE thrown in for good measure. 90s nostalgia music and the Moonlight Sonata are just wielded arbitrarily instead of really used to invoke terror or dread. The turning of the zombie head, the cliché hand on the helicopter window. All played for horror but due to a complete lack of understanding of how to invoke the chill terror it all falls flat. So he just falls back on what every hack knows, jump scares.

This movie is as if Ghost of Mars and Resident Evil made a twisted love child, except Ghost of Mars didn't rip off a video game series, **** all over it then tell us to suck it down.

Here's a brief character rundown for those interested:

Wesker - The dickhead, zero mystique. nothing like the original tbh.
Jill - Complete character redesign, woke-washed to be half-black now I guess. Basically a new character that happens to have the same name. Randomly involved with Wesker I think, movie really wasn't clear on this.
Claire - Terrible casting, terrible execution. Claire is basically an upbeat character in the originals instead of some sulky burned out 29 year old actress. The actress has no idea how to play the character which is a shame because there is now an abundance of actresses that have voiced and played her who would probably do more justice to the role.
Leon - Suddenly Indian. Incompetent right up until the final scene since all men must be incompetent because feminism. A potentially good actor ****ed over by a ****ty role.
Chris - Good guy but pretty much the naïve fool seemingly, probably the most well cast. Sells the fact that he is a cop far more than the others but is just desperately trying to deal with a script and story that is fighting him. Some of the lines he is given are the worst I've heard.

Wardrobe is awful. Fire whoever did that half assed job. Chris and Leon look great, the rest are just awful. Why put so much effort into the cop uniforms only for half the ****ing cast to not wear them. It's the 90s and they're wearing tac vests you might use in airsoft.

There is a complete lack of cohesive vision here. The RE2 remake fundamentally understood how to reinvent something while being respectful. This is just a bad director going "hey Capcom, let me copy your homework".

What went wrong here…

Not enough budget to realize this story. Poor script with no character development. Badly directed. The pacing was weird…. It was boring for the first half with way too much setup, then they crammed the mansion incident and police station all into the back half of the film and neither was fully satisfying. It was just amateurish from start to finish. I have a lot of bad things to say about this movie. I was open to a campy good time but what we have here is not even interesting. The original Resident Evil movie, while frustratingly nothing like RE1 the game, is a much better film. Something that sticks out in my recollection was the poor characterization of Leon. Leon was always portrayed as a stars in the eyes rookie but noble and heroic. Here he is portrayed as an imbecile with frayed nerves and little self confidence. Not sure why this choice was made. You can still have the character arc from inexperienced rookie to seasoned bad ass without having the character start out this weak. This feels like a fan project…but fans would never do this; fans would do a more literal retelling of the stories and include a character like Ada Wong who adds a lot of intrigue to the story. And not cut everything creepy to do with Chief Irons. And not cut Tyrant and Mr. X. And the Lab sections of both games. They basically cut all the interesting stuff. This is a really really bad movie and it sucks because we’re probably not gonna see them try this again. Thank god for Resident Evil 2 Remake that shows us how this sort of thing can be done right. In fact I’ll go play it right now. Skip this movie, even for fans.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I hated this movie by the end. If you are not a fan then it is probably a serviceable zombie flick but as a fan this is actually even worse the the original movie. It manages to mix together elements of the first two games but does so in the most unsatisfying of ways possible. Also where the Hell was Barry Burton? Why did you make Leon a bumbling idiot who spends most of the movie being insulted by everyone he meets, dropping his weapon and being the opposite of a badass at every turn? Why Make Wesker be working for someone other then Umbrella but still a traitor and then try to make him sympathetic at the end. Why is Umbrella leaving and the city essentially empty other then for the budget. No carnage on the streets, no desperate struggle for survival in a destroyed city. Leon is literally the only cop in the police station at one point. The outbreak doesn't kick in to full gear until halfway through. Yes we visit the spencer mansion and yes they recreate a few iconic shots but it is all hollow and empty. They go out of their way to use elements from the games but in nearly every case change things to make them worse. And no the movie doesn't get points just for recreating iconic locations. We spend time in RPD but its just an empty building it hasn't been used by survivors as a last ditch effort to survive its not wrecked and bored up and full of zombies it is an empty building with one cop in it and when the zombies finally show up outside and break in the characters just leave. In all honest I though I could enjoy this movie but I think I hate it. it is just close enough to the games to really feel like massive wasted potential that squanders every opportunity to be what fans wanted. Most of the characters don't feel like the people they are supposed to be it adds a whole load of unnecessary backstory that ends up adding nothing. I mean we get Burkin getting shot to pieces and mutating but again in a completely unsatisfying way. Why couldn't it have happened the way it does in the game what was wrong with that? Also his wife is an idiot who gets herself killed for no reason. Expand

After 2 part, I stopped watching Paul Anderson's films, they finally lost contact with the games. This is probably one of the worst films of 2021. This is even difficult to call a film, just a set of scenes from the first 3 games that glued into one film. The cast is weak, but this is not the main problem. The actors do not correspond to the characters at all, Leon is so generally spitting to the fans of the series in the face. A very bad restart of the series in the cinema, in the games it all turned out a lot better. I am sure that there will be a sequel, I hope Capcom will take into account this failure. Expand

But I'm not so particular or purist that an adaptation has to be 1:1 from its source material; obviously some things have to be trimmed and reworked for flow and budgetary restrictions. I get this.

But this movie confused me.

On one hand, there were some things that had exquisite attention paid to the little details: Claire's outfit, for instance, is adapted right from the RE2 remake down to the little feather necklace she wears. The Raccoon City PD building was identical to the game. But these lovely little details are overshadowed by some of the most BAFFLING choices made by the filmmakers. Choices like making Chris and Claire have a personal history with William Birkin, reducing Leon to incompetent comic relief.

And how can I forget the fact that they had the first and second games occurring concurrently? I had hoped that the mansion scenes would play out before the scenes with Claire and Leon for some semblance of chronological order, but instead they literally just mashed the plot (SOME of the plot) from the first two games together. I do not understand this bizarre attempt at combining RE1 and RE2. Why not adapt the first game to film as best as you can, and then adapt the second later- you can even combine it with RE3 since they take place within a few days of each other! This had a lot of potential, but these little Easter eggs and references to the games actually highlight how badly the film is put together: "Yes, we know all these details about the game, and yet we STILL chose to have it play out on screen this way."

Not great.

Missing characters, missing enemies, missing areas, and sadly missed opportunity.

However, it presented a very short horror, with the events starting to fall very low, the special things do not have anything special, Alice's films represented in Resident Evil are much better than the Raccoon City movie, Alice's films are very strong and scary monsters And dogs are very good, so the movie Resident Evil, Welcome to Raccoon City, was worse than so bad Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. ***Spoiler Alert*** If you go into this movie not knowing anything about Resident Evil then this is a decent movie. Has a creepy atmosphere with some good scares. If you are a fan of Resident Evil then you will probably like all of the easter eggs throughout the film while hating it at the same time. You will hate how they have completely butchered the story and characters. Pretty much massacred all the character and storylines. Not sure if Johannes Roberts that wrote the screenplay had ever played the games or read the books. It feels like he lost the cliff notes for most of the story and filled in himself. Then he decided to put all of the characters abilities and attributes into a hat and draw them out randomly to put with which ever character he was writing for at that moment. Most of the characters have been rewritten to be the complete opposite of their game characters. Bravo team is now just two regular looking cops in a truck instead of a team in a helicopter. Barry Burton has once again been screwed and left out of the movie. That might actually be a good thing. God only knows how they would have written him in. Probably as an old skinny janitor with a drinking problem. Not sure how Richard Aiken made it onto Alpha Team, let alone in the movie. There is also no mention of all of the murders that lead them to investigate the Spencer mansion. The outbreak is now from a spill into the water system and not from the infected turning the entire town. I really wanted this movie to be good after the last series crazy storylines. There is to much story from the first two games to put into one movie. The mansion storyline deserved its own 2 hour movie at least. They did keep the iconic S.T.A.R.S. Beretta pistols from Kendo's gun shop in the movie. But should have been seen more with better close ups. So here are some of my issues with some of the characters.
Wesker is now great friends with his small team and has nothing to do with Umbrella or Dr. Birkin. He's just a cop being paid to steal stuff. He is just trying to escape the dying town.
Chris and Claire Redfield now hate each other and don't get along. Claire now has the ability to pick locks. She shows up to Raccoon City to warn Chris of a possible issue instead of coming from college to check on him. Chris is in love with Jill Valentine who he apparently now grew up with. Chris can at least still shoot good. No mention of military background. Jill Valentine is now just friends with all of the guys because I guess she grew up with them now. She is also in love with Wesker. No mention of her background or dad as a thief. Vickers isn't really shown as being a coward. Just someone escaping an attack. No mention of him being chicken heart Vickers. Chief Irons is shown to know something about Umbrella, but not much. Also, more of a coward than being a complete monster. Leon S. Kennedy. What in the world happened there. Let's just make him a completely useless character who gets saved by his rich daddy when he screws things up. They slaughtered his character and storyline. Made you want him to die to keep his character out of this movie. Lisa Trevor is no longer bad. She is just a lonely monster who is being helpful. So, if you're not a Resident Evil fan and just want something entertaining then ignore my review. If you're a fan of Resident Evil then consider your self-warned.

In my opinion that movie sucks many times. First of all: Characters
1) They all overplaying, that sucks
2) They not playing their characters like in the original game. (But Director said they will be like in game. XD)
3) They acting without logical thinking.
Second of all: Screamers
SO MUCH SCREAMERS. Yeah Music in this movie is great, but only screamers? Seriously?
Thirdly: So much things left without attention from the game, for example S.T.A.R., or Tyran. :C
And this n-word peoples, yeah I know that BLM and that things but it sucks without logical and artistical point.
But movie has plusses too.(This is why my rating is 3)
Music: Yeah it's cool but not realized for full
Locations: Most of them made exactly like in game, and it's cool
Zombies: Look and act naturally (If they were in real life)
So, if u don't know original game series, this will be nice for once. But if u know, I advising to not waste ur time in there.
