The film demonstrates us the consequence of drug, overuse of medicine, and prostitution for money. The filmmaking is original, the soundtrack is groundbreaking, performance was good, and there are some fine scenes composition. Yes, that's all great but I felt a little cold after the credits. I think it is because I've heard so many good things about it and I thought it would be more than just an anti-drug movie. Well, yeah, it was a good portrait of it, and I do have to admit it's a well-made film but I just wanted some more (for example the struggle of good and evil, etc). Perhaps it's just because of my expectation but I felt something was missing, I don't know, that's how I felt about this film. Nevertheless, this a must-see film. If you are interest in stylish filmmaking, this is going to be a gift for you. Expand

Her son, Harry, is a drug dealer and an addict, along with his pal Tyrone, and his girlfriend Marion, whom wished that she could be a fashion designer.

Sara spends most of her time watching her favourite reality show on TV. One day, she gets selected to appear on that show. She wishes to go on with her special red dress but cannot fit in it due to her weight. She goes on a diet but doesn't seem to all work that well. Her next choice is diet pills, which wasn't a very good idea. Sara starts taking them irregularly and develops an addiction.

Harry, Tyrone and Marion on the other hand, struggle to keep up in the drug business and begin losing money and drugs.

As the film progresses, we see all of this get worse as their addictions spiral out of control.

Requiem for a Dream is really sickening and it breaks all expectations. It is absolutely fantastic but not one of those films you would feel comfortable watching twice (although I have watched it more than twice). Every actor in this film play their roles brilliantly, especially Ellen Burstyn. It's incredibly gut-wrenching. The story and writing by Darren Aronofsky is phenomenal. It's so well written it blows my mind. I easily give this movie a 10/10.

Darren Aronofsky downward spiral tale of four drug addicted New Yorkers is far from uplifting film and is easily up there with Grave of the Fireflies as being one of the saddest films I’ve ever seen.

However, it’s also a great Greek tragedy-style psychological character study pursuing a hollow-version of the American Dream that isn’t afraid to show the ugly side of humanity.

Worth seeing for Ellen Burnstyn's stunningly transformative performance alone.

Thanks to Aronofsky's direction that harmonized surreal visuals and sounds with the characters' feelings and experiences, I found myself experiencing and feeling what the characters experience and feel while watching the movie. Due to that, this is without a doubt one of the most disturbing and intoxicating movies I've ever watched. The problem is that the dramatic aspect in the movie actually harmed the movie; the dramatic scenes at the end of the first act slowed the pace of the movie down.
It's not the only or the major issue I've with this movie. The real issue is that the creative direction that elevated the stereotypical arc of Sara Goldfarb, wasn't enough to do this with the stereotypical arc of Harry and Marion. Also, the oscar-worthy performance by Ellen Burstyn (I really wanna know how she didn't win an oscar) and a few complications in her character, Sara Goldfarb's part was way better and more compelling than Harry and Marion's. I really didn't found myself relate to the characters of Harry and Marion so much, despite the great performances that Jared Leto and Jennifer Connelly gave.
The perfect example that can affirm that the dramatic aspect wasn't the most powerful thing in the movie is the character of Tyrone; it's a very bland character and it was very hard for me to relate to its subplot, Marlon Wayans was very good though. I love Requiem for a Dream. It's a movie to experience not to watch. It really proves that Darren Aronofsky is a real talent that with his artistic direction can easily mess with your mind.

You have to be prepared to watch four characters slowly spin out of control due to drugs. This isn't a wholesome, the world is great kind of movie. It's painful to watch, but yet it's hard to not get invested in the story and feel curious about how it'll all end. There isn't much about this one to not like. The writing is great, the story is great, and the characters are all very interesting on their own. Oddly, the only thing I had a bit of an issue with was the cinematography. I just wasn't much of a fan of how it was all shot and the overall look of the film, but that's more of a nitpick than anything. Requiem for a Dream is a must watch, even if you can only get through it once. Expand

I honestly didn't feel anything for anyone except Sara. They all deserved it. Sara however was a victim of "medical malpractice", if you could say that, so I empathize with her. That's probably the reason why the movie didn't click that much with me.. I couldn't put myself in the shoes of the characters at all. Expand

This is the pretty valuable "don't use narcotic/drug" ad I have seen ever. Actually, I watched lots of films, even show in theatre, but this one is really powerful in its own way. Also can be added that in terms of acting, especially performance of Jared Leto, it is type of the film I would love to rate as 8 star.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Darren Aronofsky goes from Pi to Requiem For a Dream with first movie's popularity. In Pi, Aronofsky does a individual analysis about Max Cohen, but, now, we have four characters in a same perspective, all of them showed with a social and critic apresentation, not niilist, abstracte and metaforic like in Mother!, the recently Aronofsky's movie. In 2017 movie, the characters are only metaphors who lives to theirself, like as they aren't a part of a big system, but, in Requiem For a Dream, Harry, Sara, Marion and Tyrone (and their psicological state) is consequence of the world.

Requiem For a Dream is more easy to understand and interprate than others word of the director like Noah and The Fountain because of the many simbologies and metaphors in this movies, that talk about religion and espiritualism, when the poetic linguage that separate telespectator and the real meaning of this elements. In this case, Aronofsky try to transform the interpretation in Requiem For a Dream the most possible simple, not in an obvious form, but thought fear and pertubation, to focus on the importance of the mainly movie theme (drugs) or only to be a opposite to metaforic linguage of the first work.

Darren Aronofsky is knowed by him ambientalist ativism, something not hidden in movies like Noah, biblic story that talk about the relationship between God, human and nature, Mother!, with its simbologies to mother nature, and The Fountain in a analyse sobrenatural about this theme. In this works, there are the preference to open cinematographic plans to show all the nature and its natural elements, in opposition to close plans focused in a small part of human body like pupils of the eyes dilating when using the drug and to show the own substance in body. Only with this comparation, we can see the opposite between natural life, in contact with god, and city urban life with drugs.

The critic of television and pharmaceutical industry are not only the opposite with natural, but like how the generations of Harry and Sara are separate and distants. The generations of parentes and sons, youngs and adults, are distants in modern society. The only thing that unite each other is the consume of drugs and medicines. Harry don't visit him mother (there are a little scenes when the both are in same place), Marion has problems with her parents and Tyrone has erased memories about her mother. In Requiem For a Dream, the young people are not anymore the revolucionary figure of society, who don't like the valuers of their parents, their grampas or the own society, but only a solitary figure with the same problems and same alienation of the olders.

The individue is alone in modern world. This is a fact about 2000 and 2010 years, but this is already reality in Aronofsky film in the start of the millenium, because, in the movie, the psicological pain of the characters is showed individuality. Harry, Sara, Marion and Tyrone are in differents places and differents situations, even the circunstances and motives are the same. The movie the individual pain in a ritmical form that is similiar if it has been show together, while a scary song is played. This effect, if don't has this factories, don't would be the same.

Human and time are parts of a same thing. The transition between summer, autumn and winter "walk" together with decadence of characters, with the idea the humans are vulnerable of external influence and time. The simbology of seasons like the cicle of life (a little semelhance with The Fountain, Aronofsky next movie) is about to hope because, before winter is come the spring, but the objective of movie is finish in winter to follow the dark side of the plot.

The american dream, that promised quality of life, good jobs and health to americans during 20th century, is showed in a niilist perspective of Darren Aronofsky. The promised paradise is now the bad strecture of poovery, like say by Sara when she was delirated with Tappy joking with the bad state of her house. The excellet health is now the consume of drugs to treat diseases like depression and anxiety, that are more commun very day. In the end, the american dream is only a dream.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What is a drug? What is an addiction? A very accurate question that we never really analyzed in our thoughts before. When we hear addiction and drugs our mind navigates to illegal substances. Well, requiem for a dream is the sort of movie that proved us wrong. However, it wouldn’t be fair to label this movie as an antidrug movie because that is not the main purpose of the movie. We can see from the beginning that Harry, Marion and Tyrone are all drug addicts. On the other hand Sara is a middle aged woman that feels alone. She is constantly watching television and when she gets invited to television show. She thinks she found a purpose to lose weight. She starts a diet and we can see that she withdraws from her addiction sugar and food. She is constantly having visions of deserts and other meals. She is constantly consuming coffee. As the time passes by she decides to visit a doctor in order to use medication for a faster result. The pills resulted in her mental illness as we see that she is locked up in a mental institution at the end of the movie. Sara’s vision and obsession to be on television was the mounting base of her self-destruction. We can assume that she was addicted in a reason to exist. She trusts the doctor on taking the pills but the doctor is not really bothered with her conditions as he barely looks at her when she visits him. The doctor is just another drug dealer in uniform. If we take it one step ahead, we can say that Sara and her son Harry don’t have the best relationship. They fail to connect as mother and son. Combined together with all the other aspects is the reason that Sara went mad. In the end Sara’s dream becomes a nightmare. Moving on we can see from the beginning that Harry is struggling to find money and heroin. He steals his mother television in order to fulfil his addiction. He has a relationship with Marion which is also a drug user. Their relationship is going well at the time as they make plans for opening a clothing store together. Things don’t go so well for Harry and he ends up at a hospital losing both Marion and his arm. He was being reckless as he knew there was a possibility to loss both things but in his hierarchy substances came first. If we were to analyze their relationship we could conclude that like his mother Harry failed to connect his Marion. Their relationship is built on substances rather that true communication. In Harry’s hierarchy Marion comes second as he is prepared to sacrifice her in order to get his dose. Once again failure to connect plays a vital role in the self-destruction element. Tyrone has visions of his mother throughout the movie and he can conclude that all that his really wants is to make her proud. He is disappointed from what he has become but he is not willing to do anything to change that. He ends up in jail failing his mother. The last character, Marion ends up selling her own body for money and heroin, losing Harry. Each character in the movie has lost something valuable to them. Tyrone has lost his freedom, Harry has lost his arm, Marion has lost her soul and Sara has lost her mind. The main mistake that the character made is that they couldn’t understand that what they were truly lacking isn’t a quick a fix but a connection, a true connection either with their mother, partner or son. Their dreams were buried forever and will never be accomplished. They will only live in their heads. All the characters are responsible for their destruction and in winter dreams turned to nightmares. Expand
