Corny, cliched, and annoying. Why don't some of those characters just get a day job?

Rent is the kind of film that comes around and changes lives. I thought it was wonderfully done. I have seen the musical on Broadway and all though some parts don't compare, it was still a great movie. If you didn't get anything Rent is the kind of film that comes around and changes lives. I'm a huge fan of the musical "Rent" and have been for years so of course I had to see it as a film. I loved that they used several members of the original cast but was disappointed by the amount of changes that were made. With that said, it is a damn good show other wise. I do not like that Chris felt the need to put a time stamp on the movie, especially since the music clearly makes a statement that it is in the mid-90s or even now (Alexi Darling refering to cell phones and email, Joanne making phone calls on her cell etc...) I feel the movie missed Mark's purpose in the show, and his plight at being "the last one standing." The movie goes in depth in certain points while missing entire points completely. Rosario Dawson does a phenominal job as Mimi, and truely captures the essence of not only struggling with AIDS but with having a drug addiction as well. Her descent is portrayed very well, as is the rise and fall of her and Roger's relationship. Maureen and Joanne's relationship also goes much more in depth in the movie than in the show. As always Angel and Collin's relationship is a heart wrenching love story, and portrayed to perfection by Jesse and Wilson. Rent-heads that know and love the show will truely appreciate it and take it for what it is as well as find the meaning. Those who have not seen the live show may struggle with knowing what all the hype is about. They will not understand what they are missing. I will be going to go see it again, and again! Expand

We walked out half way through the movie. While the actors gave a passionate performance, the story line itself was very poor. While the actors gave a passionate performance, the story line itself was very poor. There were individual scenes that had their "moments" but overall it was a bad movie going experience. This is the type of movie that will appeal only to very a specific moviegoer. Rent did a bad job connecting the mainstream audience member with the powerful and emotional story it is TRYING (but failed miserably) to tell. You sit there through the whole movie waiting and waiting and it fails to deliver... I had such high expectations for it too... Working actively in the young community, I thought this would tell a powerful and positive story, but the theme/message of "you only live once" sort of gave me the impression that its okay to use drugs.. Promoting drug use to audence members (esp. the kids around me) was very disturbing... But again, I walked out half way through so I didn't see the ending. The actors--great. The movie--sucks. Expand

You will not like this movie if you do not like musicals. You must be able to accept the fact that ordinary-looking people will burst into song mid-sentence at any moment. You must be able to accept the fact that ordinary-looking people will burst into song mid-sentence at any moment. If you cannot accept this, do NOT watch this movie, you will not enjoy it. If you are close-minded about homosexuality and cross-dressers, you will NOT enjoy this movie. If you are willing to see them as human and their hurts and joys just as real as any one else's, then you just might see the magic that is Rent. It made such a splash in the mid-90s because seeing a portrayal of homosexual love, drug addiction, and HIV was so controversial and this musical was truly cutting edge. Some ten years later, it's not any more, and that actually makes Rent even more powerful, because the ideas are not novel and this movie is not about hype. (By the way, not all the characters are gay, in fact the lead male and females are not.) The portrayals of survival and love and life in the face of gritty reality, reality about diseases, reality about addictions, reality about MONEY and success, and idealistic people who try to survive in a capitalist, materialistic society that only cares about the bottom line are what this musical is really about. I'll be honest, I'm probably not the most comfortable person about homosexuality because of my religious convictions (I'm a pastor), but Rent is not about a homosexual agenda... it is about LIFE. Get over it people! Get over your taboos. Take it for what it is. Some of the critic's reviews I've read are close-minded, prejudiced, and sickening. If you allow yourself to truly take in Rent, you will find that it is probably one of the most genuinely affecting and real emotional journeys you will ever have in a movie theater. I was a big fan of the musical, and Chris Columbus has done a brilliant job in translating an all ready excellent musical into a competent, coherent, moving, and relevant film. GO WATCH IT. Expand

As a movie fan who doesn't live in New York City, the only exposure to Broadway Musicals that I have is when they are finally made into a movie. So when I'm watching such a film, if somehow i can see and feel the magic as it must have been seen and felt sitting in a Broadway Theatre watching it live and in a majestic grandeur, well, then it's a great movie musical. "RENT" may be a little dated and a little on the corny, sugar coated side, but hey, it's a musical not Arthur Miller and I for one, felt the magic! Long Live Musical Theatre even if I have to wait 10 years to see it on film. Expand

I'd had this one on my radar for a while because I'd heard such great things about the play. What should have been powerful vocalI'd had this one on my radar for a while because I'd heard such great things about the play. Unfortunately, I could tell almost instantly that the whole thing just didn't translate well into movie format. What should have been powerful vocal performances were instead muffled and hushed into submission by the limitations of the format. Having the actors sing the songs separate from their performances was also a terrible idea. The words mismatch the lips constantly and ultimately left me feeling like I was listening to a CD while watching another thing altogether.

I'd gladly see this live, but I could never recommend this movie.

They can be a wonderful source of entertainment especially when there are great songs maybe a good message and there just so much fun too watch that being said i was very disappointing with rent. The opening scene is wonderful with the song seasons of love. The idea of a musical about people in an impoverished neighborhood not being able to pay there rent could be an inspiring premise for a musical. However this movie seems to have no sense of direction. They just jump from one musical song to another without much explanation. The music and lyrics were absolutely cringe worthy and the dialogue was clunky. I watched the first hour and then I had to turn it off. It was the longest hour of my life. in the end rent is not for everyone. I can see why some might like it but It didn't seem to have the psychological impact and important message of the musical of into the woods. The empowering message of Les miserables or the razzle dazzle of Chicago. I don't mind operas were there singing there whole way though. I am an absolute fan of Les miserables but this was way more painful to sit though then mama mia and that is saying something. all in all this is the worst muiscal i have ever sat though Expand
