The balance between drama and comedy is intelligent and the dilemma of the gay relationship is correctly resolved, avoiding the morbidity. The only thing required is an open mind to appreciate the movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A very good movie based on a very good book by Casey McQuiston, with universal themes of love and prejudice. Love wins as does the movie. The two stars do an excellent job conveying the sensibilities of their characters: they do a very good job portraying the dislike-to-like-to-love relationship that grows. Their attraction to each other is portrayed in a believable way. Opposite’s do attract - the writers and actors portray the complicated characters very well and make it work.
At first it seems that Nicholas Galitzine’s character is the more complicated and will be the center of attention. But the attention shifts to Taylor Zakhar Perez and his very exuberant and lovable character. And then it equals out during the hospital scenes including the almost necessary ‘closet’ scene. Their obvious chemistry is what makes the romance real and heartwarming.
As a gay member of the audience, it was quite pleasing to see the romantic scenes handled with passion and without being overly gratuitous. The love making scene (and we do still call it that) is both sensuous and sensual. It is portrayed in a very adult and mature way. The close-ups of the two men's faces relay precisely what each has to give the other and the love that is developing - it is masterfully done. The only other time I have seen such a well done love-making scene was between Robert Redford and Meryl Streep in Out of Africa - very good company.
The smile that Henry gives, with Alex in bed next to him after the romp in the museum tells you everything about where this character is and where he is going. Boy meets boy and they fall in love - obstacles try to block their love, but in the end their love triumphs. I thank them for making a perfectly delightful and corny love story between two men for us to enjoy. Well done - everybody involved is to be congratulated.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Now I have read the book first, and I have got to say that it is better. But saying that does not mean that the movie does not capture the essence at all. This movie does the best it can the capture the book in all of it's greatness. It shows the key moments in Henry's and Alex' relationship, with them sending the emails, and them being released to the public. They showed the anguish that they went through when they got released, and when they were forbidden the speak. But the acting for about the first half hour reminds me of the "Nickelodeon" show called "Big Time Rush" but after it did get better in a slow and steady process. I would recommend this movie but the book would always be recommended first and foremost. Expand

Despite cutting a lot of book side-plots (adapt books into series people, not 2-hour movies!), Red White and Royal Blue stays loyal to the original content's intimacy and emotions! Nicholas Galitzine nails it as Prince Henry!

This feel-good rom-com gives you everything you need and more for a night in, cheesy love, racy comments and scenes, not to mention gorgeous actors that do an amazing job at putting themselves in the shoes of two men in love. You'll be laughing, heartbroken a couple of times, and at the end feel a warmth growing in your chest know that the world is becoming a better place, however slow, for everyone. Expand

Red, White and Royal Blue

This queer romantic comedy tells the story of a British prince falling in love with the son of an American president, and the roads they travel as they explore this love.

This movie is very reminiscent of the queer teen series, Young Royals, especially with the similar themes both portray, but Red, White and Royal Blue has characters that are more aged.

Taylor Zakhar Perez and Nicholas Galitzine are brimming with cute and endearing chemistry, making this romcom very enjoyable and believable. The progression from enemies to friends and eventual lovers was a bit fast, but each stage has memorable moments. The supporting cast was also good, especially Sarah Shahi and Uma Thurman (the coming-out scene between her and Taylor Perez was very memorable and sweet), but some of their characters could have been fleshed out better.

Having not read the book, I can't state how faithful it was to it, and if this adaptation is better or worse. But there were some resolutions I felt weren't done, like Nick's journalist friend not getting his comeuppance. The movie would have fared better if it was a mini-series. There's also a sort of imbalance that occurs in the sex/romantic scenes, the scenes before the Paris hotel scene have a Disneyesque tame feel to them, and then the Paris hotel scene packs in beautiful smut.

Red, White and Royal Blue is an easy and enjoyable watch, and should definitely please romcom lovers.

Their initial awkward incident marks the beginning of their attraction to each other. In many ways this is a traditional love story with lots of longing, much kissing and even some sex. What makes this one special is the compelling chemistry between the 2 these actors, who both prove handsome and utterly charming. It's interesting that this duo must confront their coming out, when they live in such a woke world (female president and Latinx husband). The romantic tone goes from bright to dramatic as they cope with their situation, but despite the absurdity of the whole situation, it's still a sweet gay romance. NOTE: Fast forward thru the credits for one final joke. Expand

Given that the typical film spans only 90 to 100 minutes, it’s unrealistic to expect every nuance of the book to be mirrored on screen. ‘Red, White & Royal Blue’ masterfully rises to this challenge, standing as a stellar film in its own right and paying homage to its literary origins. “We won. We won.”

It's just two simple words that should mean winning the election, but somehow gets translated into something more special.

We have definitely won with this film.

Being a person who has read the book again and again, I had an expectation when they announced that this will have a film adaptation. It did not disappoint. It tackles not only the romance between two men, but also greatly shows how hard it is to be in a gay relationship due to social pressure. As gay people, it is already hard to find someone who will love and accept you for who you are, let alone someone who can be proud of you and will be by your side against the society's unjust treatment.

Yet this story shows and teaches you that you can learn to be proud of something the society has taught you to be ashamed of. This film shows you that being courageous takes time. It's okay to be scared. This is a scary world to live in. But as long as you have someone who will love, support, and be proud of you, then you can and will definitely win against anything.

However, this heavily diluted, glacially paced piece of insipid celluloid fluff has none of the above, and it truly escapes me how many critics and viewers have found this utterly bland exercise to be heartwarming, charming and involving. In telling the somewhat far-fetched story of an alleged romance between a British prince and the son of an American president who start out as comically exaggerated adversaries but end up supposedly finding true love with one another, writer-director Matthew López subjects his audiences to an unconvincing relationship wholly lacking in chemistry and stemming from an improbable courtship, much of which arises from a string of all-too-convenient, less-than-discreet engagements that are otherwise supposedly impossible to arrange and coordinate. What’s more, the film’s humor is virtually nonexistent and incorporates none of the edginess generally associated with gay comedies. In fact, it’s so dull and so safe that it makes most Hallmark Channel movies seem downright risqué by comparison. To its credit, the picture makes some modestly eloquent statements about LGBTQ+ equality (even if they’re nothing we haven’t already heard many times before), and it features a fine supporting performance by Sarah Shahi as a smart-mouthed, fast-talking presidential aide (arguably the only genuinely funny element in the film), but it misses the mark on so many other fronts that it’s hard to believe this project ever got green-lighted. It’s a shame that the door opened by “Bros” (2022) to make gay romcoms a more viable cinematic genre has been set back by this underwhelming effort. It’s also equally disappointing that an organization like Amazon Studios – one known for generally doing solid work – could let something as sub-par as this out into the movie marketplace. Let’s hope moviegoers can put this one quickly behind them and see the foregoing issues soon fixed going forward. Expand

Red, White & Royal Blue possesses these elements. However, it also bears an overly sugarcoated quality that, at several points, renders much of the onscreen developments to feel artificial instead of genuinely emotional.

This leads to a situation where what should naturally flow – especially given its predictable premise involving two individuals initially at odds and later falling in love – comes across as an overly preplanned sequence of events.
Unfortunately, this results in moments where the entire narrative seems quite implausible and a bit ridiculous.

While the film's intentions are laudable, the execution follows a weathered recipe that has been exhausted over time.

The film has a typical construction of films of this genre, it is a story with a very predictable outcome. The cinematography of the film is very good and the photography is quite sophisticated, sometimes even evocative, matching the lives of the characters. The main plot involving the novel is well constructed. The performances of the two main actors are good and their characters, despite being different from each other, end up complementing each other, and they also have a lot of chemistry. In general, the supporting characters are good even though they don't have focus. The other parallel plots are well developed and everything there has motivation, they are not matters thrown in just to complement. It's a little film that's nothing different but well produced and very enjoyable to watch. Expand
