Engaging in plot and simple in its intensity, Red Eye is terrifying and absorbing simultaneously, hammering at the audience without remorse. Bravo, Wes Craven.

Wes Craven in the past has given us some of the greatest horror classics whether they be "The Last the House on the Left"(1972), Nightmare on Elm Street" (1984), The Hills Have Eyes"(1977), "The Hills Have Eyes Part II"(1985),Wes Craven in the past has given us some of the greatest horror classics whether they be "The Last the House on the Left"(1972), Nightmare on Elm Street" (1984), The Hills Have Eyes"(1977), "The Hills Have Eyes Part II"(1985), "Scream"(1996), "Scream II"(1997) and "Scream III"(2000). Craven has always delivered a new and terrifying twist on one of cinema's oldest and most revered genres the one thing about Craven I've always liked is that he doesn't try and do the same thing twice. Actually, I take that back he did do the same thing twice actually three times with the Scream series (It got ridiculous after two). Craven has always managed to give us a new and original look at horror, Craven has always stuck to the ground so the real question is what if the master of modern horror took to the skies.



Wes Craven's "RED EYE" is a smart and engaging economic thriller that while lacking the grounded terror of most Wes Craven films it does in fact evoke the oldest of all fears, the fear of flying. People fear flying for many reasons some fear it because they are afraid of heights like me. They fear flying because they are afraid the plane will have some kind of problem and crash; the reason for fear of flying is infinite and in this film it churns out a story that resonates well with modern audiences it is a story about one girl and one terrorist trapped on a red eye flight to Miami. Craven is a master of horror, has proved with this film that he can expanded past the trappings of the horror genre, and create an action thriller that works as a character driven story as much as it does as an action picture. The story of this picture in some ways lacks originality as it is reminiscent but not derivative of other films of it's type sort of like Wolfgang Petersen's "Air Force One" or George Seaton's "Airport " and don't get me wrong I enjoyed the story, I loved it but it could have worked out a little better in my opinion. â… Expand

Cillian Murphy was the perfect bad guy and Rachel McAdams was the perfect victim. My favorite part was when Rachel McAdams escaped and Cillian Murphy was chasing her through the airport. This was the worst movie I have ever seen. Save your money--this movie is not even worth renting. It should be called Brown Eye. It turned out to be a comedy because the scary parts were so predictable and cliche it was comical. I have This was the worst movie I have ever seen. I came out feeling like I had seen an up-scale TV movie. It was fine for what it was but not particularly suspenseful. Wow. This has got to be one of the most overrated movies of 2005. The trailers (back in 2004?) had me very curious and expecting a real thriller. But it just evaporated on the screen. This is a plot? Awful movie. Just awful. Terrible plot, annoying actors, predictable, poor characterization, just atrocious. The beginning was littered with bad clichés and tired dialogue. Case in point, the story evolves from airport bar, to airplane, and finally to a knife-chase scene at a suburban house. Lastly there was too many loose ends and the film rapped up ineffectively. This is best illustrated with one of the final lines, "And after you finish [the comment card] you can go ahead and just shove it up your ass". Note, this line had nothing to do with the film and was spoken unexpectedly. There was no running gag, there wasn't some hilarious set-up, that was the line in it's entirety. I can't go any further in explaining how hideous watching this movie was. Shame on those critics who believed this film had any redeeming qualities. I can confidently say that this was the worst film I've ever seen.… Expand

A short, but great thriller film that's engaging all way through. It touches on several subjects and progresses by combining them to one. So, that's how the story goes. The movie stars Rachel McAdams as Lisa, a hotel manager who is boarding the Red Eye to Miami after attending her grandmother's funeral in Texas, she is off to see her father (played by Brian Cox), and on the way, she meets a strange man named Jackson (Cillian Murphy) who seems like a sincere gentleman, but that's where the fun seems to end for her. Upon getting onto the plane, it seems that Lisa and Jackson are sitting beside each other, and Jackson seems to know every little detail about Lisa. He begins to blackmail her, and make threatening deals which puts her in a difficult position. Lisa tries everything she can to resist, but if she doesn't do what he tells her to, her father's life is at risk, and she has very little choice. Director Wes Craven places us, the audience, in the similar place Lisa is, the unease tension and difficult getaway plans is executed effectively. You are never uninterested in the events that occur in this film, McAdams also puts on a very concentrated and dedicated performance which is another reason to keep us watching. The combination of Craven's fast paced direction and McAdams' strong performance is what makes this movie what it is. Not forgetting the somewhat claustrophobic atmosphere that Craven crafts when on the Red Eye. This is one of the best thrillers made.… Expand

An edge of your seat heart pounding thriller film that emphasized the situation any chance it could get. Which it did. "Red Eye" was good and is a movie I would definitely watch again.

Red Eye is basically what happens when you take an hour of solid psychological tension-building, then tack on a half an hour of "an ode to Scream" at the end. It's a mostly unremarkable film, with the only stand-out aspect being the acting, which is quite good. Cillian Murphy is, as always, a joy to watch, and Rachael McAdams is surprisingly convincing as the ubiquitous "young woman in a frightening situation." The first hour or so of the movie is almost entirely carried by the interaction between these two, which is tightly scripted and relatively intelligent. And then...it all kinda falls apart. The last half hour isn't bad, per se...but it takes a sudden leap into the sort of tedium and ridiculousness that characterizes modern slashers--a phenomenon that can be attested to the fact that Wes Craven, master of the unconvincing horror film, directed Red Eye. The end leaves several gaping plot holes and loose ends, most of which come as a result of the last half hour. Overall, it's not a waste of time. It has good acting and overall solid execution. But a lame last half and lack of anything particularly original keep it from greatness.… Expand

Lisa Reisert is the go to girl as 'Red Eye' opens, she is a hotel manager who is catching a flight back home, she's on the phone for the first few scenes trying to rectify a matter over a call, she's busy and always on the move, but apparentLisa Reisert is the go to girl as 'Red Eye' opens, she is a hotel manager who is catching a flight back home, she's on the phone for the first few scenes trying to rectify a matter over a call, she's busy and always on the move, but apparent is capable of defusing any situation, but she is put into a very different situation when she catches the last flight back to Miami, this has all the tendencies to be a decent thriller, and save for a few plot snags and some over-zealous tones, Red Eye succeeds in being enjoyable, full of suspense and doesn't drag it's feet. Rachel McAdams plays the overworked girl, but she doesn't oversell her character which seems to be common territory now, it's quite easy to get carried away with plot details, but McAdams has had her fair share of mainstream roles over the years, she reacts how we assume people would react in these situations, but of course this doesn't come without a plot that has no need to be as complex and figuring as it is, but she has a foe in the form of Jackson, playing what appears to be the ideal man behind her in the check-in line, he helps her out with another unruly passenger, buying her a drink and laughing over each others names and stories about relatives, but he has plans when they board their flight, his charm soon turns to sinister motives when he outlines his plan to Lisa, not to give too much away, but her retired father (Brian Cox) is somewhat involved in a sort of hostage situation that depends on Lisa following everything she is told. The film uses its plane setting to its advantage, using the enclosed space for more candid scenes and that added dose of claustrophobic intensity. We have quite a short and snappy thrill ride in Red Eye, strong performances from the increasingly brilliant McAdams and the resident bad guy Murphy prove to make the film what it is, especially when they hit the ground and a car and mouse game ensues, Murphy's character still soldiers on, even with a pen lodged into his neck. Wes Craven is the man behind the 'Scream' series, it's clear here as he often creates situations that are often comical more than they are frightening, but the chemistry between the two leads leaves the small flaws behind, this is interesting, thrilling and well acted in a short time frame, it doesn't sell out but instead casts McAdams who doesn't forget the sort of film she's doing, but also remains believable and doesn't oversell the plot at all, definitely a film that succeeds in not dragging out scenarios but gets to the point.… Expand

Director Wes Craven knows how to elicit fears and thrills along the way in this straight forward thriller. The acting is spotty, though never outright bad. The first half of the film is very cheesy and kind of silly, while the second half really finds its groove and, though kind of outlandish, is truly thrilling. This obviously makes the second half far superior, even if the dialogue can be in-and-out between solid and terrible. Essentially what I am trying to communicate here is simple: only thriller fans need apply. Red Eye's typical nature and adherence to cliches will annoy many, but for fans of the genre, its taut thrills and tight plot will be more than satisfactory.… Expand

The courteous creep Jack Rippner (Cillian Murph) must have manipulated the seat arrangements in the plane so he can sit next to cute hotel manager Lisa Reisert (Rachel McAdams) and blackmail her into sparing the life of her dad in exchange for the deaths of the under secretary of Homeland security and his family who happen to stay in the hotel she works for.
It is that kind of thriller directed by horror expert Wes Craven who is well past his prime nowadays. So where you hope something unexpected to happen you get the usual aggravating nonsensical tale of a lone woman against creepy guy. Reality and logic require suspension and the gods of ultimate coincidence need to be invoked to keep the tale on track. During the cat and mouse game between Lisa and Jack it even gets to physical blows, but of course, as per script, nobody notices anything. Not even the violent banging against the walls of the toilet in an airliner triggers questions.
The low point is reached two thirds into the movie. Lisa escapes the clutches of the scary guy to run through the airport dodging security and police, while trying to phone her dad and her hotel at the same time. Why she doesn't go to the first security guard or police officer she sees is baffling considering that she has been attempting to warn them the whole time. Even more unbelievable is that the hotel assistant she gets a hold of doesn't even bother to call the room where the undersecretary is to warn him of impending attack, but instead decides to take the elevator all the way up and deliver the warning in person. What cheap way to create suspense. More unbelievable scenes follow, mostly at her dad's house. The police delays showing up and the neighborhood doesn't bat an eye when Lisa runs over a bad guy aiming for her dad with a stolen car and smashes it frontally into her dads house. In the end Lisa, after fighting Jack tooth and nail is saved from the creep by her dad. Hey, she is a woman after all.

To sum up.There are some unintentional funny moments, a few stupid people, and a cast that makes the best of a failing script bled dry of originality. If you happen to be a fan of Wes Craven don't go and see this movie: you'll see his image notched. If you have something better to do you might consider skipping it also. It isn't totally bad, it is just implausible and run of the mill.… Expand

Their was nothing special about the story. What made the movie interesting was the role of the feme fatale (Rachel McAdams). Not a bad movie for the first 45 minutes or so, but the movie takes an inexplicable left turn from a believability standpoint after the plane lands that ruined the whole thing for me. Terrible movie. The main actor is Jack Rippner, Jack the Ripper, get it HA HA! That is almost the only good part of this movie. The only other good part is that this movie has Brian Cox in it. It's not surprising that a thriller released less than 4 years after 9/11 and dealing with airborne terrorism (or, more specifically, terrorism conducted FROM an airplane) would endeavor to ruffle as few political feathers as possible: It's not surprising that a thriller released less than 4 years after 9/11 and dealing with airborne terrorism (or, more specifically, terrorism conducted FROM an airplane) would endeavor to ruffle as few political feathers as possible: the intended assassination target is a Deputy Director of Homeland Security whose incendiary message (something on the order of "we've got to get tough on these hostile nations") is general enough that red- and blue-staters can fundamentally agree on it, and the fact that his life is at stake because of this indicates that terrorists are notoriously thin-skinned folk. But then, Wes Craven is neither Costa-Gavras or Oliver Stone, nor Lionel Chetwynd or John Milius; even as himself, he's a long way from enraging and offending audiences with his three-decades-ago gorefests Last House on the Left and The Hills Have Eyes, and the most controversial message he's been pushing as of late is the notion that werewolves can live normal lives just like you and me, in this year's earlier Cursed. Nope, Craven's just out to thrill these days, and Red Eye demonstrates that he can still do that very, very well. Excellent, claustrophobia-inducing employment of very limited space for much of the movie, with special kudos for Craven's use of close-ups, plus lots of clever touches in Carl Ellsworth's script (you gotta like an airplane movie that refers to the Mile-High Club without ever mentioning it by name, and a suspense thriller that includes a Dr. Phil book as one of the props!) make this a continually entertaining and effective sweat-inducer, drawing pleasant comparisons with last summer's terrific Cellular. In the airport, in the air, and back on the ground, Red Eye works so well for what it is that my only real complaint is actually a compliment: it's one of the few movies currently around that actually could've afforded to be ten minutes longer! Rachel McAdams as a hotel manager forced to help with the murder continues the roll she embarked on with Mean Girls, The Notebook and Wedding Crashers; here as in those, she's utterly incapable of making a wrong or false acting move. Cillian Murphy (Scarecrow in Batman Begins) is masterful at blending softspokenness and charm with psychopathia and danger; his almost feminine facial features make him even creepier. But for my money, the movie absolutely belongs to newcomer Jayma Mays, a tiny little thing who steals scenes and hearts as an overwhelmed employee at McAdams' hotel. With her Walter Keene-kitten eyes, tremulous voice, and wobbly walk, Mays is vulnerability personified, and she's irresistable. Sure, it seemed like a made-for-TV movie at times, but you have to admit that you're suspending your belief for a fun ride at the matinee. There was a point in this movie where I respected Wes Craven's savvy on an artistic level as the main villian started to pursue the protagonist with dogged persistence. It went through 15 minutes where the bad guy was stepping into the room, was behind the shower curtain, was behind the unlocked door, was right next to the answering machine, etc. My girlfriend kept rubbing her hands on her knees nervously and kept yelping at all of the twist and turns. That's my kinda date movie, ya know? I enjoyed this movie experience because Rachel McAdams, the main heroine with such a lovable personality, was so adept at adapting to the different suspenseful events. I'm not saying that Wes Craven was struggling to adapt his vision to an acceptable PG-13 movie, but it seemed evident that he was straining his creative influences to release a movie that would be acceptable to a mass audience. Sure, it's understandable that there were major holes in the plot that you can drive a semi-truck through. But the fun-loving, playful attitude from this movie made it so easily digestible that it doesn't seem like such a bad idea. And whatever the critics might say, I have to admit that having a combatitive heroine who saves the day makes this the kind of film that I'm willing to pay good money to see in the cinema. I hope that others can appreciate my perspective. While I agree that head-butts and violence against women are not appreciated, I understand that the visceral pleasure of seeing the good girl get her revenge was worth the price of admission to this PG-13 movie. I enjoyed the scenes on the airplane between McAdams and Murphy, but the last act was just one thriller flick cliche after another (low cellphone battery, fight to the finish with bad guy, etc.). At least Craven kept the flick to 85 minutes.

Loved this movie. You do have to suspend belief a little bit, but the payoff is great in my opinion. I thought that the casting was great. This movie was so entertaining from start to finish. Isn't that the whole idea? Highly recommend it.

You know going in that the plot is far fetched, so it's better to let yourself be entertained without judging films like this with the same criticality you would apply to a weighty drama. I like WC's style of tension and suspense, I'd like to see him do a good action thriller or two in coming years. I saw this in the theatre the first time around, and I thought it was tense, atmospheric, and paced very well. The acting performances were admirable too, I would like to see the female lead take on something deeper and more dramatic instead of the estrogen laden chick flicks she's usually in. I think this film showed she has some depth and range, attractive too. This is no film for the ages, but I'll award a 9 for being enjoyable. I'm deducting a point for the way things wrapped up at the end though, it deserved an ending at least as good as the rest of the film.… Expand

Everyone clapped at the end, it's really a crowd pleaser - not since LotR have I been in a clapping theatre. I can't say enough about Murphy and McAdams, just fantastic actors. Sure it's a lil' predictable, but hell it's practically given away in the previews! Good plot, you already know it, though. The ending was cliche... BUT it was extremely fun. (How else can you end this movie without it becoming melodramatic?) Don't listen to these people who think that WES CRAVEN movies need to mirror real life and fall victim to it's exacting logic. Sure, there may have been better ways to do what Jackson was trying to achieve... but would it be interesting as 'Red Eye'? Nope. Go see this movie, today! You'll jump, you'll be taken aback, and trust me... you will yell "YES!" at the finale. **Here's hoping this is Craven's return to the cinema throne...**… Expand

McAdams and Murphy carry the movie in a way that its ridiculous story never could. If you focus entirely on their acting, It's a tolerable film. If you actually pay attention to the plot, You realize just how bafflingly dumb it is.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a thriller drama film from Wes Craven. Fans of Wes' other works will perhaps be disappointed to hear that this particular film isn't a 'gore fest' as it doesn't contain any explicit bloody violence - its not a slasher film, unlike 'Nightmare On Elm Street' et al. However, for me thats a good thing, as I'm not especially keen on such films which usually rely almost entirely on the shock factor to entertain.

I felt this film was genuinely quite tense, suspenseful and unsettling. Speaking of which, I noticed a quite heavy use of stringed instruments by way of instrumental pieces played fairly loudly throughout the film, to help create, or add to, the tension and general unsettling feeling. However, at times I did feel that the music was perhaps a bit too loud and distracting.

There's also a good use of camerawork during the in-flight scenes, whereby the camera slowly zooms/pans across the many various rows of seats, giving the viewer a rather uneasy feel. Its almost as if we're carefully looking at everyone in the flight and wondering which may be involved and may know about whats going on.

I liked the ocassional shot of the skyline from outside the plane, with the red/orange tinged sunset also giving off a spooky atmospheric feel. I felt it was an entertaining and quite watchable film in general, although I wouldn't say that it particularly broke new ground or was especially memorable overall. One thing I did like and found quite funny was the name of the airline thats shown on the side of the plane a few times - 'Fresh Air'.

Cast wise, Rachel MacAdams plays Lisa. She comes across as believably scared and unsure what to do, although (and I realise I'm perhaps being a bit picky here) I could have done with a few less 'oh my God's!. I suppose you could say she plays the typical American 'damsel in distress' type. Cilian Murphy plays Jackson Rippner and he does seem quite facially expressive and emotive, almost seeming somewhat rubber faced not unlike Jim Carrey did in his 90s films, although in a more menacing way. Also present, cast wise, is Brian Cox as Joe Reisart.

I found myself on the edge of my seat at one or two points, when the plot pace suddenly sped up towards the end of the film. If I had to be critical, I'd say that I was a bit sceptical regarding quite how likely, or realistic, aspects of the plot were but for the most part I went with it. I'd still say its more believable than the aforementioned slasher flicks tend to be (in my experience certainly). On the plus side, the film is relatively short running time wise at one hour and twenty two minutes. I do tend to prefer shorter films in general, for the most part. I also enjoyed a fast paced car scene towards the end of the film, as well as one or two special effects. I felt that this was a relatively decent thriller style drama - not one of the finest per se but its certainly entertaining, tense and easy to watch.

Content wise, there is a constant feeling of tension and threat throughout the film, which could potentially upset or frighten particularly young viewers but is, of course, to be expected. There is some relatively strong language and one or two sudden scenes which could make people jump, although, thankfully for me, there is no excessive bloody violence. There is violence but its relatively moderate, or what I would regard as moderate (although someone suffers a stabbing to the neck but next to no blood is clearly shown, otherwise the violence involves things such as vases being smashed on or near others).

Yes, I suppose I would cautiously recommend this film, although it isn't especially memorable as such, its an easy watch, it works quite well at being tense and suspenseful and it isn't overly long. I'm not sure I'd pay much for it but given I got my DVD of it from Poundland, I wouldn't exactly say its a big waste of money. However, if your looking for a gory slasher-fest horror film then look elsewhere as this will disappoint in that regard… Expand

Red Eye is a slick, compact, thriller. The story is enthralling, the characters fleshed out completely, the rewatch value high, the acting superb, and I could go on…the only limiting factor is my word count. In short, it’s about a simple hotel manager held hostage on a crowded plane, being forced to take part in a political assassination. The setup used in this film is satisfying and frequent. I also appreciate the intelligence of the writers to clearly think of more than one outcome of a scene, meaning plot-holes are, to my critical eye, nonexistent. Characters are compelling with Lisa having an extremely sympathetic backstory that unravels as the story progresses. Jack is up there as one of my personal favorite villains. He’s cold, calculated, and frankly, terrifying. All these characters are backed up by solid acting, especially Cillian Murphy. The soundtrack is appropriately serviceable, though you’re not going to be compelled to buy the soundtrack by the end. One of the best features of this film is clocking in under ninety minutes and every minute is used to the fullest extant, but the story never feels rushed. If you’re looking for a thriller high in adrenaline and low in run minutes, Red Eye is the movie for you.… Expand

“Red Eye” is an engaging thriller that chronicles the psychological dilemma of a young woman who must choose between saving her father from imminent peril, or protecting a government official mixed in the crosshairs of a terrorist agenda.“Red Eye” is an engaging thriller that chronicles the psychological dilemma of a young woman who must choose between saving her father from imminent peril, or protecting a government official mixed in the crosshairs of a terrorist agenda. Throughout the film, the overarching tone is tense enough to promote a sense of ongoing dread without becoming too mentally exhausting. In addition, the subdued pacing allowed for a multitude of interconnected plot lines to be set up and fully fleshed out, thereby granting each member of the tight cast of characters a valid role within the story.

Concerning the plot, the story follows Lisa Reisert as she gradually becomes caught in the machinations of a diabolical terrorist: Jack Rippner. Trapped on a late-night flight with the clock ticking, Lisa is tasked with delivering a phone call to the hotel she manages in order to switch the rooms of a prominent Homeland Security figurehead. With her father’s life on the line should she decline, and each failed attempt to circumvent the situation thwarted by Rippner, the tension continues to build until Lisa must finally decide to confront her tormentor or submit to his will. The final act does an exceptional job in following her decision to its logical conclusion - albeit with a number of interesting twists - and the film ends on a satisfying note for all the set-up that was put in motion since the starting scenes of the film.

Where the presentation easily shines the most is in it’s meticulous detailing of all the characters involved, with every individual the story makes a point of highlighting later going on to play a significant role. This does wonders in keeping the runtime concise and the primary focus where it should be without running the risk of admitting random filler for the sake of filler. There is also something to be said about the choice in casting for the leads: with Rachel McAdams’ acting bringing life and urgency to the role of Lisa, as Cillian Murphy - perhaps most well known for playing Scarecrow in “Batman Begins” - adds all the sinister undertones needed to make Rippner a formidable foe.

The somewhat minimalistic soundtrack spikes in intensity at just the right moments to elevate the atmospheric fear Rippner brings to the table, which mirrors well with the numerous close shots from the camerawork and positioning of the characters in the seemingly-claustrophobic environment of the plane; all of which selling the tension and soft-horror vibes that the narrative called for. As mentioned previously, the surgical amount of precision that went into crafting the character interactions and legitimate foreshadowing was impressive; leading to a favorable amount of rewatchability.

In conclusion, “Red Eye” is a must-see for any fan of suspense-driven genres. As a film less than an hour and a half in length, it thankfully wastes no time on needless fluff or loose ends; instead presenting it’s audience with a gripping narrative that rewards every ounce of investment given.… Expand
