I love Scorsese and DeNiro but for whatever reason, Raging Bull feels like a kitchen sink drama with boxing sequences. Maybe this film will forever be a mystery to me. Oh well... Expand

For me.. the story was promising but ended up being nothing special! Great acting though (deserved oscar for DeNiro) , but on personal level - i wasn't impressed at all.

Its hard to hate on a classic like this one, but Raging Bull doesn't have the effect on me that it likely would have if I had watched it in 1980. The film has worn a bit over almost 35 years as most films do. Robert De Niro was still great in the lead role. I can't say anything bad about him, he showed lots of dedication by working out and then gaining weight to represent Jake La Motta after his career ended. Other than that I found the movie a bit uninteresting. Expand

Filming a 1980 film in black and white came across as pretentious. Expand

I had a miserable time watching this movie since the main character is being a meathead for 90% of the movie. There is absolutely no one to root for, the movie goes on for way too long and in the end it's just so unrewarding. I didn't once feel sympathy for La Motta. He is played almost too well by De Niro hahaha. So it's a well-made movie that I personally couldn't connect with at all. It's a movie I appreciate much more than I like. As a movie experience I almost want to rate it 0/10 but as movie it's an 8, 9 or even 10 as most people like to give it. What we can thank this movie for is the birth of superduo De Niro and Pesci which would eventually star together again in the far better GoodFellas. Expand

This role is played by Robert De Niro. Jake LaMotta’s wife is played by Cathy Moriarty, Vicky and Joe Pesci who plays the role of De Niro’s brother, Joey. The director of that movie is Martin Sarcoses, producers Robert Chartoff and Irwin Winkler.
Raging Bull is the story of a boxer, Jake LaMotta, in the 1940s and 50s. After losing a fight for the first time in his career against his opponent, Jimmy Reeves, whose role is played by Floyd Anderson. His brother Joey (Joe Pesci), through one of his contact in the world of the mafia, Salvy (Frank Vincent), manages to make him participate in a fight for the title of champion of the middleweights. Jake is a jealous sickly, violent, unfaithful, especially narrow-minded, vulgar, who has no respect for his wife, Vickie, and is often in confrontation with his brother, often accusing him of sleeping with his wife. He only wreaks havoc everywhere he goes. At times, it seems that his brother is as wild as him, for example when his brother fought in a bar with men who accompanied the wife of Jake, Vickie.
I'm not a fan of boxing, but I really appreciate the character, Jake, who played his role so well by his gestures, his voice and especially his glare. Every single time that there was a boxing fight and Jake was facing his opponent it was an “inciting incident”. The major conflict in this movie was between Jake and himself, it looks like he still needed to prove himself something. The images of the film represented the time that the story was happening, especially the black and white. The images of the fights, the sound, making you feel that you were living the moment. Therefore, I find that there were far too much violence and too many vulgar words. In my opinion, the film tarnishes the image of women.
In conclusion, the lesson I learned in this film is that you have to balance your professional and personal life, unlike Jake, who made no difference between the stage fight and the world around him.

I got to admit that i was truly disappointed when I watched it (probably I was expecting another type of movie). Even though the GREAT actign by De Niro and Pesci is undeniable as well as the photography.

Was pretty disappointed by this overall, the story was just bland and the beats of the plot were just so predictable. De Niro was really good but he was not given a lot to work with.
