It was fun. It went by fast. I'd say a faster pace. First 10 minutes were the worst for me, but after that it was good. A simple goal in the plot. A little action every now and then. Near the end. I understand the intent that this one is more cartoony and fits the fairy tale world, but I still liked the more realistic one better. Otherwise, I still liked the previous installment from 2011 better, which I thought had a more interesting story. I'm just not as done with The Last Wish as others. It was an enjoyable show that went by quickly, but it wasn't anything particularly great for me. A good cartoon that I can recommend.… Expand

Absolutely charming movie with gorgeous visuals. I never watched the first one, and I lost track of Shrek with the third film, but 'Puss in Boots: Last Wish' proves that the entire franchise can be revived if treated this way. It's great to realize that all the characters have an arc, which really makes you worry about the fate of each one. An great experience for children and adults alike. It's not every time that a franchise can progressively get better, but this new instalment in the Shrek universe proves just that. Aided by stunning visuals, Puss In Boots: The Last Wish takes audiences on a thrilling, heartfelt and contemplative journey. It also blends its dark elements perfectly with its comedy.

The plot is poignant. The characters are very distinct, and each one is developed properly. Having antagonists that range from sympathetic to horrifying also helps keep things fun. The voice work of the cast should also be praised. The action sequences are well-choreographed and smooth.

One of the best animations from DreamWorks.

If you had told me that a sequel to a spin-off of the Shrek movies was going to be a contender for my favorite film of 2022, I would've said "there's no way that'll be even close to Everything Everywhere All at Once." And yet here I am, having watched Puss in Boots: The Last Wish upwards of 20 times, thinking to myself "ok, this is close to Everything Everywhere All at Once."

The Last Wish is so much greater than it should've been. Considering the first Puss in Boots film sort of flew under the radar, the fact that a studio greenlit a direct sequel a decade later when the original franchise hasn't had a main entry in YEARS is mind-blowing to me. And yet, here we are. I almost begrudgingly saw this in theaters because I had a pass, and as a big fan of the first two Shrek movies, I told myself there was no way this would hold a candle to some of Dreamworks' masterpieces, but The Last Wish wasn't just surprisingly good, it was one of the best films of 2022 and one of the best animated films I had ever seen.

The premise is simple: Puss is on his last life out of nine and fearing permanent death, tries to track down the wishing star to wish for his lives back. Only problem for him is that there are a multitude of baddies also out to get the wishing star. About 20 mins into the movie, we have an ensemble cast of characters with individual motivations all equally striving to find the wishing star, and this elevates the otherwise simple story to something more fun and interesting. Balancing multiple characters can be tricky, but The Last Wish's writing is so adept at holding focus where it matters while adding bits of comedy and emotion from the other stories that it all feels very cohesive. You don't even know who you're rooting for about halfway in, and despite being a "kids' movie," the themes of purpose and death ring empathetic regardless of age or experience. The animation alone is truly groundbreaking. Using similar style to Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse, The Last Wish switches frame rates across a watercolor aesthetic to give it a richly unique visual flair that's impossible to ignore. The opening scene alone sets the tone, both thematically and visually, perfectly. The various action scenes are insanely visceral, and a certain big confrontation that's teased throughout the story feels earned and cathartic by the end. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is just about as perfect an animated film as could be. It's smart, empathetic to all audiences, a visual treat, well acted, hilarious, and a great addition to the Shrek universe in general. Regardless of your investment in Shrek, though, it's a standalone story that is enhanced by its references to predecessors rather than being reliant on them. Trust me - The Last Wish will be a better film than you'd ever expect.… Expand

The character arc of Puss going from being afraid of losing his final life to him accepting himself for it and not wasting the wishing star on his personal desires, the fact that the main villain is DEATH HIMSELF who is fed up about this whole "Cats having 9 lives" thing and takes matters into his own hands by hunt down Puss wherever he goes, the other villains are good too with Jack Horner being a greedy fat guy who wants all the magic in the world and Goldilocks wanting to be with a proper family until she (like Puss) accepts herself for who she is and ends up staying with her 3 bears. Perrito though is by far the best character in the movie though, he has arguably the saddest backstory in the entire movie with him nearly dying by his owners throwing him into a river but he just stays happy and full of hope despite that throughout the entire movie and all he wants is just some friends to keep him company. This is definitlety one of the only movies I will recommend that everyone should watch!… Expand

They also give perrito somd depth as an interesting and postive character,instead of just being comic relief.
The themes are mature and applicable in terms of appreciating what u have,treasuring your life and having trust in others as well as being trustworthy. The animation is colorful and as they skip a few frames,if u pause the movie,u can get a lot of visual details and find easter eggs,rather than the blur in realistic animation. The story is character focused,which allows the characters to pave the story instead of the story making them one dimensional and only there to drive the story. The songs like fearless hero and la vida es una are upbeat. The tune of the sound in each scene brings out the feeling that the creators want u to feel. Voice acting is great.
The panick attack scene had small details that allow u to understand what the character is going through

Cons-they can bring out the message better,maybe by exploring the harder paths to pronounce the fact that as bad as life seems,its the people that u are with makes ur life worth living,which could have been brought out better this way.… Expand

An unthinkable recreation of the mean spirited fairy tale world of Shrek, focusing on the reflection arc of the best character from the fan favorite sequel. I didn't think I wanted another Shrek movie. They were fun movies from my childhood, but I eventually grew tired of the gross out humor and the fairy tale parody elements as I went into middle school.

Years later, when I saw the trailer for this film. I was assuming that people would just be getting more of the same from the Shrek universe. Mixed in with a lot of safe pop cultural references like many other kids films these days. And then I heard that people were adoring this film. Multiple videos were popping all over the place, memes were being made, everyone was laughing. I thought it was just another fad about a safe film pretending to be as good as its predecessor. So much like Puss in Boots drawing is sword, I was ready to watch this film and destroy it with my logic, and then Death knocked my pen away. I had later discovered that this was not, just another adventure comedy movie. This movie blew me away. The jokes didn't just hit, they made almost die of laughter. The theming of the journey gave me an adrenaline rush. I haven't felt this way about a family film for a long time. This is not a good movie...it's a great movie.

It's a movie that doesn't stick out like a fad, but rather a beautiful painting that will inspire future generations to come. They took the best parody elements from the Shrek films and evolved them. Not only that, but the message also feels really powerful. It focuses on self reflection but also treasuring what you have at the moment, even if you've only recently encountered it. Living within the moment, but also fighting for a little longer to enjoy what is precious to you. It doesn't feel forced, because of how relatable the situation can feel on a personal level.

This film reminds me of what the ideal family film is. A movie with nice comedy for the kids, but also grand ideals for the adults to analyze. And then those kids years later, analyze those same ideals as adults, while there kids enjoy the jokes. There's multiple different ways to enjoy it. I mean there are three different categories of great villains in this film, none of which are weak twist villains. I definitely recommend this film. It's the jack of all trades right now in Dreamworks' modern movie line up.… Expand

Here, Dreamworks have given us what might possibly be the best thing to come from the Shrek franchise. The Last Wish is an absolute amazing film, especially given it takes a more mature tone whilst still having willingness to be funny at the same time.

I nearly teared up at the scene where Goldilocks looks at the memory of her first being adopted by the three bears. I can’t even remember the last film that did that to me. The fact that a bunch of side characters had an interesting plot that was also relevant to the main storyline shiws that they clearly knew what they were doing.

I was close to taking a point off because I felt Kitty Softpaws spent quite a lot of the film being a hypocritical jerk who chews out Puss for being arrogant when she’s no better, but I guess she does improve in the end. The moral of the film is also a very good one too - we’re all going to die someday, but that’s not a bad thing; life your life to the fullest to ensure it is good whilst it lasts.… Expand

I've given it a lot of thought, I genuinely think The Last Wish might be my favorite animated movie ever. Better than The Lion King, better than Iron Giant, and probably even better than Coraline, my previous favorite. The messages and themesI've given it a lot of thought, I genuinely think The Last Wish might be my favorite animated movie ever. Better than The Lion King, better than Iron Giant, and probably even better than Coraline, my previous favorite. The messages and themes in this movie are so universal, they can be understood by kids and adults alike. The thing that makes this movie standout in 2023 is that it goes places your standard Disney movie will not. On a surface level, the characters use "hell" "crap", and "damn" and even swear on multiple occasions (although it's censored), that's pretty metal for a Puss in Boots movie. There's also a surprising amount of death in this movie, which fits into my main point.

This is a kids movie where are protagonist is genuinely terrified of dying because he knows he wasted his life. Seeing Puss come to the conclusion that he's been a terrible person (...cat) throughout his adventures hits pretty hard. He's not a murderer or anything, but he's self-obsessed, he lives for fame and glory. This movie is about someone learning about the true meaning of life, and it doesn't stray away from the hard topics like destroyed relationships and finite nature of life.

Of course the movie is voice acted wonderfully, it's hilarious, and animated perfectly. I heard from someone that worked on this movie that they were inspired by Attack on Titan, which is incredibly random but I kinda see it.

The characters are good, the story was decent and the comedy for the most part was on par. The characters: While I'd say the characters are good, the main problem I had was that kitty was horny on main way too often in the later half. Death was just a generic evil character that just so happens to be convenient when the time is right. The Dog was easily my favorite character throughout the entire movie, it really carried the movie heavily, and single handedly, made the movie more enjoyable. Every quip and bleep were out of the blue funny and made it entertaining. If the dog wasn't as inclusive as he was, I'd say this movie would have been an easy 5. Puss himself was Moreso a "go here do X" rather than adapting to the situations at hand. The Plot: The main plot point seemed a little out of character, and I thought it could be handled slightly differently. The "last wish" was a generic goal in order satisfy the nature of Puss in Boots past. The Comedy: Quick and to the point of extraction. It was without a doubt zoomer edited humor, BUT it's not a bad thing at all, just want to make that clear. A good example was the death total, that got a good chuckle. End Point: Obviously, this is a movie for kids, but it's not entirely focused for kids. This is certainly a both sides can enjoy it when the time is right. Rating = 8/10… Expand

Was not a fan of the first film, but this steps up in every single way. The animation and general design is pretty beautiful. Speaking of action, as soon as you see frame drops you know that you're about to get another exhilarating fight scene with some of the best choreography in recent memory. Plus, the fights are very easy to evoke the correct emotions. For example, with a specific character in their appearance throughout the movie, we get a fear-filled fight amplified with terrifying sound design or simply appearing, it allows fear and tension to be built rapidly.

The only issues are that some of the plot points are rapidly skipped over or take a while to start moving and some animations are noticeably repeated; in a charming way

Honestly, even if you despise the first Puss in Boots this is a must watch with anyone you can drag along into the ride seeing it's got the best features of an animated movie of it's kind: it's beautifully animated, exciting, tense, heartwarming and ultimately a spiritual successor to Spiderverse with a lot of their similarities.

Please watch this in any (legal) way possible, if you want a truly memorable experience.… Expand

Entertaining story, but the graphics and animation were horrible! If I wanted to watch anime...well I never want to watch anime. I feel robbed paying to watch this because it was all anime, especially the action scenes.

The film's animation and art style is amazing, blending stylized 3D visuals with beautiful 2D animation and effects to create a visually appealing movie, on the lines of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse.

Then we get the story, a story that deals with the themes of life and death so maturely that you forget this is supposed to be a family-friendly children's movie. And that's because it's a movie for everyone who's protagonist just happens to be your favourite fearless hero, Puss in Boots. I haven't seen a film deal with this theme so maturely in so long. The acceptance of one's own mortality being a reason to find things worth fighting for in your one life. PIB might be the best interpretation and dealing with said theme i have ever seen. And at the heart of it all is a film that doesn't take your time for granted, being around 100 minutes long, short for this current age of cinema, keeps the pace going whilst allowing for those slow moments to make you feel Puss' every thought and feeling on his latest adventure. And plenty of fun and entertainment to be had. No matter how old you are, you need to go see this movie… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. OMG is this my favorite movie of 2022 (and I'm a film student!), this movie is full of so many charming characters, incredible animation and fantastic music.
To be completely honest, I haven't seen the first one but this just shows that anyone can go to a cinema or watch it online and have an amazing time. my personal favorite part are the characters, you would think that in a movie with 6 villains would feel crowded and overwhelming but it works phenomenally! each type of character is present in this film, there is the obvious hero with an interesting conflict on his own, the sidekick who has a backstory with the main character, the cute and charming yet funny companion, the villain that is evil just for the sake of it, the villain with a touching story and an incredibly threatening villain that has a personal problem with the main character and yet I am never sad whenever we cut to a different character since all of them are so good!
I really really hope this film does good in ratings and earnings because it sure does deserve it.
I wanted to rate this a 9.6 but I talked myself to like it even more so its a 9.8 to me, I wish I made people understand the impact of this film.… Expand

It was so hard for me to give this a 10 instead of a 9. Every character in this movie is beautifully made. You fall in love with each character except the villain of course. There's nothing really bad I can say about this movie.

I loved what they did to one of the antagonists and how he affects the cat. Most of the jokes work (it's a shame they show the montage of lives in the trailers), the arcs are well divided, the characters' goal, I can say that Spiderverse had its share of influence in the animation, which is beautiful.
The team has a lot of work ahead of them if they want to make one more, and the cat is an excellent character who deserves the challenge.
You can watch it, it's really worth it !… Expand
