The visuals are impressive and the actors do their best to work through the script. I've seen worse disaster films, Poseidon was entertaining for being a loose remake.

A remake is not always an automatic negative. The visuals are quite impressive, and if you look beyond some mediocre acting, you actually may be entertained.

The beginning of the movie was great, but the rest of it was predictably boring at best. I actually left the room a few times without pausing it. I was expecting a better story line. You knew exactly what was going to happen.

For those expecting acting that rivals Schindler's List, shame on you. This was a big-budget adventure that fell short of being at all memorable. Dreyfus' acting is a shining point, and Russel and Rossum handle themselves well along with him. Slightly above average popcorn flick. The special effects are top notch and the suspense is at full throttle, but there should have been more character development. There wasn't much time for the viewer to get to know and bond to the characters. The viewer was lead from one danger after another danger, after another danger. It felt like 'Fear Factor: The movie'. Quick and painless summer fare, plain old fashion disaster filck. If you are looking for anything else with say depth. Go elsewhere. Visuals are fantastic, characters are merely there to get thrown around by water nothing else.

One half of me says to continue watching this film, the other half thinks it should sink dead in the water and I should flip on something else. For an action/disaster movie 'Poseidon' is rather, well... safe. And easy to foretell. It's neither boring nor bland and some of the "escape" scenes are well directed but overall this feature offers nothing new in the genre. Truth be told, pick a side (heads or tails) and then throw a coin in the air to determine this picture's fate because it honestly could go either way.… Expand

A pretty pathetic movie with cliches over all the place. the acting was below average as well as the writing but at least the action and visuals were good.

I really enjoyed this movie. I cannot understand all the negative comments associated with it at all. If you go and watch a movie called Poseidon you should expect to see a big ship go belly up and then a fight for survival and that isI really enjoyed this movie. The visual effects are top, even today. But the story, characters and dialogues are superficial, so even though the movie is short it is somehow boring.

Of course, it is a killing that tries to escape a small group where the heroes are, in what appears to be the most risky of plans: to go out into the open air by the bottom of the ship.

Technically, the film is much more evolved than its predecessor. Times are different, the ways to achieve visual and special effects have evolved. It's normal. The film raises a question of CGI and effects, visual and sound, as it happens with the majority of the films of catastrophes. The cinematography is careful and the scenery of the ship, with all its beauty and grandeur (even when destroyed), is impressive and the whole film is a race against sea water, which is always on the trail of the characters ... but basically That's it!

The oldest film, a 1972 classic, can still be better. It does not have the grandeur of digital effects but it makes up for everything else. To make matters worse, the new movie can not bring anything new, completely copy the previous story. As for the cast, it plays a satisfying role, but it does not shine. The characters do not have as much depth as in the first film, but the constant sense of danger allows the audience to sympathize with all of them. Josh Lucas is pretty good, but his character, initially unpleasant and somewhat arrogant, may prevent some audiences from building empathy. Kurt Russell is exactly the opposite, and we sympathize with him soon, but he is not at his best here because of the lack of material that the actor can work on. Richard Dreyfuss did well on a nice but minor character and Emmy Rossum tried to be more than just a damsel in distress.… Expand
