If you have no sense of humorAfter watching the previews I thought this movie was going to absolutely retarded and I've always been very fickle on how I feel about Andy Sandburg but I can honestly say I was so surprised and very entertained. If you have no sense of humor then this isn't a movie for you. If you're looking to see a movie with a plot as complex as Inception then this isn't the movie for you either. If you're genuinely looking to laugh hard for a good hour and a half then this is the movie to go see. It cracked me up and I just recommend it to anyone who doesn't have a stick stuck up their ass sideways. Expand

OK, let's get this straight: this movie is stupid. But that's the best part. It's absolutely supposed to be, and that's what makes it great. I am a huge fan of The Lonely Island. From their SNL shorts, albums, videos, and movie appearances, IOK, let's get this straight: this movie is stupid. But that's the best part. It's absolutely supposed to be, and that's what makes it great. I am a huge fan of The Lonely Island. From their SNL shorts, albums, videos, and movie appearances, I love those guys. I regularly perform "I'm On A Boat" with my buddy, Bill Tozzi, during karaoke.

However biased this review is, due to my fandom, I can absolutely see how other people that are unfamiliar with The Lonely Island and their brand of comedy could have found this movie terrible. It's an absolute ridiculous and silly movie that is meant for a certain fanbase, so it could have been a big miss with a lot of people. However, for myself, I absolutely loved the outrageous nature of the film and it kept me laughing throughout its entirety.

I loved the documentary-style take on the film, as it chronicled Andy Samberg's Conner4Real character from his early days, ups, downs, and resurgence along the lines of 'Walk Hard' and 'This Is Spinal Tap'. The cameos from music artists like Usher, Snoop Dogg, and a host of others made the story feel real, having real-life celebrities inhabiting the world. The songs were on par with The Lonely Island's albums and the bits and physical comedy was hysterical.

At no point did this film ever take itself too seriously. Andy, Jorma, and Akiva have such a symbiotic chemistry that they just play off of each other seamlessly. The comedic timing is on point, especially when paired with the supporting cast. I had so much fun watching this movie that I don't care how silly it was. It's certainly not winning any Oscars or major awards, but it was something great for their fans and I really appreciated it.

Checking the numbers, the film holds a 77% critic rating and 71% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It only grossed $9.4 million.

For what it was, I loved this movie. I can't give it a 10, because...I just can't, but I'll give it a 9.

This movie is basically a satire of the celebrity life (Justin Bieber much ?) and the way that famous people react to falling from grace among other things.
I personally really liked this film, it was incredibly funny all the way through and Andy Samberg does a fantastic job on the role here. He's actually really funny and we're once again reminded of his talent. The soundtrack is also unbelievably amazing, all the songs have a really catchy beat and funny lyrics that just replay on your head for a long time after hearing them.
It does drag on for quite a bit unfortunately even though it is only 86 minutes it felt like much longer. Also the movie is filled with cliches but I guess that is not the point of the film because it was never trying to shy away from them or be something ground breaking. It is just a fun flick to watch when you have free time and I appreciate it for that.

AndPopstar is kind of a parody of music documentaries, some of the moments are very similar to the movie "Justin Bieber Never Say Never". But this movie has a fictional character who can't understand the fact that his newest album flops. And when that happens, the movie turns more into a comedy filled with very funny jokes, well filmed concert scenes and a TON of cameos, and I thought it was great! I really enjoyed Popstar, there are clever moments, there are dumb moments and then there are also moments that are just a bit more emotional, and Andy Samberg nailed it. He was very charismatic and he felt alive. And even though I felt like the movie went forward too quickly sometimes and left me wondering if there was maybe too much cutting done, it still provided a satisfying beginning, middle and end. Check it out if you're a fan of comedy and music! Expand

It's smart with it's dumb humor. Everything is played to perfection making for the near-perfect skewering of today's pop music scene. The overblown nature of the stars, the ridiculous nature of the publicity they receive, and the heights they are willing to go to in order to stay relevant. With plenty of original songs, it's also one of the better concert movies out there. Even if the fun you'll be having from the musical performances comes from just how intentionally comical they are meant to be. There are also plenty of great cameos. Simply put, all the pieces line up. The results are one of the best comedies to come out in a while. Especially in terms of originality. 9.1/10 Expand

Seeing the trailers I thought the film was another in a wave of ultra dumb comedies, but up front, it’s really not. Popstar is a little formulaic, but is admittedly funny, and finds a way to even be witty. Even more impressive, although not all that surprising is that some of the songs in this movie are actually pretty catchy, albeit mock-ups.
For those who love This is Spinal Tap and other films of that nature, this film is a little derivative. That being said, it’s not as if this is just a rehash of other better films, that entire genre does require modernizations every few years. Because this film is spoofing not only the musicians of today, but everybody in the entertainment world. That being said this film does list as another Judd Apatow film and does have some formulaic moments that appear in all of his films.
The most notable “Appatowism” in this film is the overdone comedy trope of today, where the film lingers on jokes far longer than they should, under the illusion that lingering over a joke makes it funnier. It’s kinda like when a goofy kid makes a great joke everybody laughs, and then the kid gets confident and keeps pushing the joke until everybody around is just wishing he’d shut up and go away. That being said, the film doesn’t live off the annoying lingering joke, and succeeds at being genuinely funny, all the time. It’s not the funniest movie this year, and it may not even be hilarious, but the film is consistently littered with raunchy funny jokes, that often deliver.
The film was marketed poorly, in my opinion, because it came across as an ultra dumb comedy, and in reality isn’t half as dumb as it comes across as. The film occasionally wanders into the dumb comedy area, but often finds it’s way back into the land of witty comedies, making it somewhat of a mixed bag. For instance, the songs are catchy, they are witty reflections of our pop stars, but they are also a little too on the nose, making them come across as a little dumb. That being said, underneath the thin exterior of a dumb comedy is a really witty reflection of our current music industry, and the pressures, idiocracy, immaturity, selfishness, and chaos commonly associated with it.
Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping is filled with cameos from famous musicians and comedy actors, some of which even lend their singing talents to the musical pieces. At times it feels like the entire music industry is in this film, as they play along on a mockumentary making fun of them. However, the film is never really mean spirited, or all that damning it just grooves along, spoofing everybody from the musicians to the fans. For those who like the lonely island, you’ll love this movie, and for those who are seeking a funny comedy, regardless of rating this is also a movie you’ll love, but there should be a note, this movie really isn’t for kids or the weak spined.

Andy Samberg and his The Lonely Island creators (Akiva Schaffer & Jorma Taccone) play a boy band that breaks up when the lead (Samberg) gets too cocky and goes solo. It's shot in faux doc style with a fast pace of gags and endless spoofs. Some of them are duds, but just as many land a laff. The inevitable song parodies try too hard to be outrageous, but manage to entertain. Of course, there are dozens of cameos, some playing themselves and others hiding behind characters. Telling the story of rapper Conner4Real and his past membership with the rap group The Style Boyz, Popstar is a mockumentary musical comedy akin to This Is Spinal Tap. Similar to that 1980s comedy classic, Popstar offers an insightful look at the music industry and the bloated ego that comes along with it for many stars. At the end of the day though, Popstar often feels like an elongated Lonely Island Youtube video that is not funny enough to justify the length. Never laugh out loud funny, Popstar offers many chuckles and is largely irreverent enough to be entertaining, but never truly reaches the comedic heights could have aspired to touch.

Starring Andy Samberg as Conner4Real, Samberg turns in his typical brand of comedy with Conner4Real being an idiot and self-absorbed guy who is treated as a legend of the music industry. Alongside him are the rest of The Lonely Island group as well as a wealth of former SNL actors such as Bill Hader, Maya Rudolph, Kevin Nealon, Tim Meadows, Joan Cusack, and Will Forte. All starring in largely small roles (other than Meadows), these characters do add a lot in terms of comedic talent to this film. In particular, Bill Hader's small role as a guitar technician for Conner that enjoys "flatlining" is hysterical and the type of dumb, silly comedy to be expected from a film of this sort. Through The Lonely Island, there is obviously great chemistry and comedic ability between the trio. This often comes to light, but never amounts to hilarity and simply relies upon silly lines and small visual gags that elicit laughs, but are fleeting and non-substantial.

When compared to the best comedies of the year thus far, such as The Nice Guys, Love & Friendship, or Ghostbusters (sue me), Popstar's laughs are more inconsistent. Many jokes do fall flat and the film can go long stretches where there are apparent joke attempts simply through the absurdity of the situations, but many do not land. Compared to those best films, the film's dialogue is a lot goofier and takes itself less seriously, but has less of a comedic pay-off. Now, of course, this is not to say Popstar is not funny. The random humor of The Lonely Island does appeal to me, but simply does not lend itself to being a full film due to the hit-and-miss nature of this style of comedy. Fortunately, when it does hit, it is funny and when it does miss, it is not eye-rollingly bad or lame. Instead, it is simply a joke that did not work as well and the film offers so many of them along the way, it is easy to look past bad jokes and still get a lot of enjoyment out of the film.

As for its portrayal of the music industry, Popstar's storyline is pretty typical and does not offer a unique perspective, but it is an entertaining and informative look at the life of a popstar who blew up beyond the scope of his former groupmates. Becoming conceited and self-absorbed, Conner4Real discounts his past friends and looks down upon them and becomes obsessed with his success alone. This certainly has a negative impact on his own success and he is forced to recognize he did not reach these heights alone. Clearly, this is not unique, but the backstage look at the pop industry and camaraderie that can exist between performers in the industry is fun and says a lot about the current state of the music industry and its reliance upon concerts and social media. In this way, it does often function similar to This Is Spinal Tap, but updates it for the modern age and, in this way, it is a worthy contender with the comedy classic as both offer an engaging look at the state of the industry.

An overall middling comedy, Popstar: Never Stop Popping offers a lot of jokes that either hit or miss, but the hits are low and the misses are often only slightly off-the-mark. Thus, it is neither hysterical or appallingly unfunny. Instead, it is simply middle-of-the-road entertainment that largely positively rides on the shoulders of the comedic and charismatic talent it presents to the audience. The end result of that being an enjoyable and brisk hour and a half that more than entertains.

If you like the combination of music and comedy, this is for you. I think the writing was the best thing, even the lyrics of the songs. The directors did their part very well, but in the end it was the actors who saved the film. Andy Samberg was splendid.

The film was narrated in a documentary style like a series of interviews which also includes behind scenes, I mean unedited clips like the live recording. It is the story of three members of a famous band in America. When everything was going well for them, the split happens unexpectedly. So the main singer decides to go solo and sees some success. But he struggles through his girlfriend and their marriage plans, and also he finds some issue with his manager. You know the makeover begins, how he comes back to his normal life was the remaining film.

It is not anybody's biography, but you should still watch it. The storytelling is not preoccupied with the drugs and sexes, though there are some amounts, which makes it is good viewing for the adults. Don't think it is some silly comedy, lots of things from it makes sense. You can enjoy the music and at a time you would have some laughs. Well balanced contents and overall it is a rare comedy.

Saw this movie in theatres, movie wasn't great. Bad acting, was one or two funny moments. Not worth seeing. The camera work was a little weird, bad shots. Wouldn't see it again.

Considering how much I like the comedian Andy Samberg, it's kind of surprising that I've mostly seen him in smaller trivial movie roles and "Brooklyn Nine-Nine", but not "SNL" which is his main body of work on screen.

So the catching up may begin with "Popstar" which gives him a big movie role. In a rather little known and commercially flopped movie but still! Co-written with "SNL" buddies Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Tacco, all three forming a rapping boy band. The most successful one goes solo later and this is mostly his story about going places, then falling down and rediscovering the charms of having your true buddies with you, always. The result is mockumentary-style modern music business fable, hitting on all the main cliches and having a surprising amount of real life stars cameoing, mostly as themselves commenting on the main character's career. More on that later.

Like many projects by famous American screen comedians, "Popstar" has some good ideas and ambition but doesn't really reach out to any refreshing new ground, relying mostly on the charms of the cast and their ability to improvise. They try quite hard and steadily, to lampoon the American new pop music industry – where mediocrity rules and promotion is way more important than the product – but end up mostly imitating or rehashing the stuff they are supposed to laugh at. So if you like Samberg, you will be at least somewhat amused by the result; if you don't know or care about him you can quite safely miss this movie.

Judd Apatow is credited as one of the producers. His "extended family" has actually produced similar lampooning comedies in the first half of 2000's. Some of them are actually good and still watch-worthy: "Anchorman" (about 1970's TV news business) "Walk Hard" (about music business) and "Talladega Nights" (about NASCAR racing). So if you don't dislike Will Ferrell or John C. Reilly or Apatow school of modern rude but sweet comedy, you should check them out. Just to let you know: "Popstar" really has amazing amout of real life stars in small roles, playing themselves mostly. Including Questlove, Carrie Underwood, NAS, Usher, 50 Cent, Ringo Starr of The Beatles, Simon Cowell, Adam Levine (Maroon 5), Akon, Mariah Carey (insisting she's the most humble person she knows), Pink, radio host Big Boy, DJ Khaled, A$AP Rocky, RZA, T.I., Pharell Williams, Seal, Snoop Dogg, Weird Al Yankovic, Michael Bolton, The Roots, Katy Perry, Justin Timberlake, Danger Mouse, Jimmy Fallon, Arcade Fire. Also popping in are some cool comedy people like Sarah Silverman, Will Arnett, and Bill Hader.

Yes, it's a good 10-minute sketch stretched to over 80 minutes... but I still quite enjoyed it. Go, Samberg!

Of course Amanda Krupp would like this...

Why does this movie actually have a cult following? Seriously, I'm stumped! Although I admit "F--K Bin Laden was kinda cool."

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Samberg Never Stops ! Popstar never stop never stopping (2016): Dir: Akiva Schaffer, Jorma Taccone / Cast: Andy Sanberg, Jorma Taccone, Akiva Schaffer, Tim Meadows, Sarah Silverman: Like the underrated Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story here is a mockumentary about the rise and fall of fame. Andy Samberg plays Conner Friel who fronts Conner4Real where he gives exaggerated performances that are mock by the media. He leaves his previous band the Style Boyz by walking over everyone with his ego. He announces his new album that offensively addresses themes of gay marriage. Jorma Taccone plays his DJ who is reduced to wearing a blinking lights oversized helmet on stage. Akiva Schaffer plays Lawrence, a song writer who left the band to become a wood worker on a farm. He resents Conner because of his ego and taking credit for his writing. Tim Meadows plays Conner's frustrated manager, and Sarah Silverman plays his publicist who must present a dose of reality to Conner when he is shamed and reduced to a drunken state at his mother's house. There is numerous celebrity cameos that are usually involved in mock music videos. Taccone and Schaffer also serve as directors and they blend comedy with the reality of fame. The production is flashy and fit the mood but the humor may draw protest from those who are not interested in seeing Samberg autograph a penis that emerges through the rolled down window of his limousine. Theme regards egos and fame and the crash that occurs when they meet. The result is funny and innovative but doesn't walk as hard as Dewey Cox. Expand

Great movie!! I absolutely love the way it is a documentary with such famous musicians and rappers adding to the satire. The story is so true and attacks the song writing skills of today's music. If you have a good beat, throw in a bunch of catch phrases with a cool voice, add another famous singer to back up with a couple of lines and you have formed a new hip hop/rap song. I was completely entertained and recommend this movie for anyone to sit back and enjoy a clever comedy. Love the fact Justin Timberlake dominates the dorky entourage cook and has the ability to be humble, having fun with this movie. The cussing can be a little intense but the movie stays true to the creators. Hope everyone else enjoys as much as my laughter filled evening.

I’ve been involved in a number of cults, both as a leader and a follower. You have more fun as a follower, and I love that this movie is finding its cult following. Well deserved; this movie is smarter than it has any right to be.
