I understand why there was an urge to remake the film for modern times. Spielberg is not credited as director but it is believed that Spielberg had a heavy influence on the film and I imagine he had a big impact on the direction of the film despite Tobe Hooper's (the director of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre) credit as director. This film really worked as a thriller throughout but it is in the end that the film that the horror really picks up. While I find this movie to be over glorified and a touch overrated. I appreciate Poltergeist because of it's wonderful music, superb special effects, decent acting and suspenseful direction.

A simple, yet surprisingly unique ghost story, that surpasses most other ghost stories of then and now. Through my nostalgia glasses, this movie maybe gets an 8.5 or a 9 out of 10.

But looking at it through new eyes, and without my nostalgic bias, the movie has it's flaws, it's corny moments, but it holds up better today, than the remake will hold up in the next five years.

Poltergeist is remembered and it deserves to be remembered. When it comes to ghost stories, it doesn't get more sophisticated or as classic as Poltergeist. And even without my bias, the movie gets a solid 7. If only we could have .5's on this site, otherwise, I would give this film a 7.5.

Poltergeist (1982)

Sinopsis:

Poltergeist succeeds and still holds up today for many reasons. However, it's the two biggest ones I am going to focus on for this review. Because without them the movie's other successes wouldn't matter.

The first becomes almost immediately apparent. The characters here are real people. They make real decisions and act like a real family. Elements of the film make it part horror-comedy because of how realistically it portrays how people act. It makes it easy to get involved in their plight. You'll actually care about these characters, unlike the faceless morons you'll find in today's horror films.

The second is originality. Even today after all these years there is still nothing like it. A trend I've noticed a lot with the old horror classics. Some would say we don't see horror films like this anymore due to the progression of time leading to new forms of style being needed for the genre. I disagree. There is a sense of imagination to the scenes that we don't see anymore. Crazy crap happens here that blows all of the lame jump scares and similar looking specters that plague the horror flicks of today out of the water. Not too mention the themes it tackles. Something the vast majority of more modern horror movies don't do at all.

A return of this style of horror movie would be most welcome. As far as the actual horror itself goes, I personally did not find it scary. Still with this level of creativity and intelligence put into the visuals and scenarios, it's so unlike anything else I've ever seen before that it barely bothered me at all.

It's an excellent horror flick. One that I wish more modern directors would take cues from. It's got believable characters, a fantastic story, and that wonderful sense of deranged imagination. There are scenes here that will stick with you long after the credits have rolled even if you didn't find any of it scary, because you'll find yourself thinking about them and saying "wow, I've never seen anything like that. Why don't more movies try something like that?" It's one of the best examples of how to do the genre right and because of that even after all these years it feels remarkably fresh. Who knows, it also might just scare the wits out of you. There are plenty of reasons to watch it and I recommend doing so as soon as possible.

An evil force grips the Freelings home and this is the ultimate ride in supernatural horror and one of the best in it's genre. Starring Craig T. Nelson, Heather O'Rourke, Jobeth Williams and many others... Poltergeist to me isn't a scary movie but it's pinpoint precision on terror and suspense and it's made with care and attention to detail. It would probably scare kids though and is certainly scary compared to the sequels and remake lol. One of the greatest horror films ever made I'd say Poltergeist certainly delivers! Expand

Thanks to great music and the classic Spielberg touch, this one is all together fun, magical, and downright terrifying. The backstory, pacing, and the way in which the scares are created, are all great and interesting. What I also enjoyed is the curiosity surrounding the poltergeists in the home that the family has before things start to get scary. This one can get a little silly at times for sure, but is brilliant all the same and though the ending is odd as all get out, it remains scary. The acting is also quite good for a horror film and as mentioned before, the score is very good. Overall, Poltergeist is a classic of the genre. Expand

Given the talents, Poltergeist is an annoying film because it could have been so much better. Certainly, the subject is interesting, a persistent parapsychological phenomenon that defies scientific explanation, yet refuses to go away.

But producer Steven Spielberg and the director Tobe Hooper, don’t really care. They’re fully content to demonstrate how well they can create the physical manifestations, plus a lot of standard sideshow horrors.

But the story is truly stupid, though well-acted. Craig T. Nelson and JoBeth Williams are the parents, living almost wall-to-wall with their neighbors in a suburban development. But when the furniture starts to fly around the room and the big tree in the yard gets hungry for the kids nobody ever seems to notice. Here you have a house in the middle of the street going berserk in Dolby Stereo and nobody calls the cops. But Williams is terrific as the mother, at first amused by the strange goings-on in her kitchen and later terrified when cute little Heather O’Rourke disappears into the walls. And Zelda Rubinstein walks off with the film as the miniature lady who comes to cleanse the house.

It is more to be discussed than experienced, if only it had the sassiness that it was building towards.

Poltergeist

Hooper is a messy filmmaker. He makes messy films. Full on. Widen your imagination as much as you can and he has got that too. Blood baths, annoying amount of screeching and screaming and more cringe worthy images than probably necessary. All of this comes under his recipe to make a fine horror film; a classic to be honest. The director Tobe Hooper has Steven Spielberg, Michael Grais and Mark Victor as writers in his backroom and there are no regrets. And Spielberg is going all the way in on his signature emotionally cheap family drama dose that works, as always, all the time in the film.

In fact, that is the only thing binding this unholy spirited house with one single thread. For daft performance, cheesy visual effects and dogmatic opinionated characters are pushing the film out of the window whenever they get the opportunity. And adding to those teary sketchy scenes is the mythology weaved as a narrative. And even though it's rigid and arrogant in its views, there is enough room for you to rest comfortably.

Just the whole portal and the other dimension and the way it functions, every bit of that aspect of the storytelling is squeezed properly for a satisfying experience. The horror, the humor and the drama, it checks off this list boldly whenever it faces its demons. It also concerns for the generation gap, property investment, gullibility, misuse of resources and taking it all for granted, into account to ground the film with deeper resonant themes. The supporting characters are also saving this illegal activity surprisingly and smartly. I mean, the guests entering this haunted house are more comfortable than the ghosts, the Poltergeist, demanding not equal, but all the rights to the land that they supposedly own- talk about a bad investment and a bad day.

The film's greatest strength is its characters. A horror movie can only be truly scary if viewers can connect with and care about the characters, and Poltergeist establishes them as intelligent, genuine people rather than just pawns for the script to kill off or otherwise torment. Many films try too hard to sell their protagonists as real people and the dialogue ends up coming across as forced and rushed, but Poltergeist takes its time and it pays off. The Freeling family is written into the story in such a way that they are authentic, admirable, and capable. The fear that the actors display is thus much more powerful and makes for a much more affecting viewing experience.

While the characters develop beautifully, the plot develops in a much less sharp way. It doesn't really feel like a cohesive story with one event leading to another, but rather a series of paranormal events that don't have any logic or motive behind them and aren't connected to each other in any way. When it's finally revealed at the end what the root cause is of the neighborhood's great disturbances, the whole story disintegrates because all the scattered events throughout the movie appear contradictory in their causes and their intended purposes.

Poltergeist does have some effective aspects to it and is a satisfying horror outing, but the chilling visuals, compelling characters and engaging dialogue just aren't enough and the suspense crumbles under the burden of a scatterbrained story.
