Movie adaptations of video games are often criticised. Pokémon: Detective Pikachu, however, is an example of such an adaptation done right.

The story is basically this: A guy named Tim Goodman goes to the Pokémon-populated Ryme City after his father is involved in a crash and presumed dead. He later comes across a Pikachu whose speech he can understand, and reluctantly teams up with said Pikachu to look for his father, believing him to actually be alive.

Without going into spoilers, there are a lot of twists throughout the film to keep you guessing. I was a bit apprehensive about the idea of a talking Pikachu at first, but it works and he's pretty funny. The other characters are generally good too, and I appreciate the surprising amount of depth with Tim Goodman. The Pokémon look fantastic too, although they seemed a bit low-resolution sometimes. I also found the climax to be a bit iffy.

On the whole though, a great adaptation and film in general that seems to improve upon the source material. Existing Pokémon fans will get more out of it though.

While I was watching it I keep thinking if that terrible But we'll meaning Mario bros film which missed almost every mark. Well ludicrously and pokemon pikachuchu detective takes all those missed marks and hammers them home! The cgi is amazing and the casting is brave while the only issue I had was that at times it's not weird enough. And it's a really weird film. I'd say it's for adults more thank kids which might be a problem when making the budget back. The only real misstep is the story at times and the last 1/3 which is basically the plot of batman 1. Though by the end it's all neatly wrapped up. I feel they could have made it even more nature and ended up with something special But pokemon is for kids so that was never an option. One of the few films I'd watch again as there was so much going on. ULTIMATELY It will make you laugh and shout and its fun and goid natured. Go see it ! B- Expand

Part Blade Runner and part Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Pokemon: Detective Pikachu manages to take the popular video game franchise and turn it into something that both longtime fans and newcomers can enjoy.

The CG was very impressive, Justice Smith and Ryan Reynolds play the leads very well, and the story works well (even if the twist isn't hard to guess). The outcome of the movie shows the passion that all those had on it had and the movie and the Pokemon franchise as a whole. The sci-fi setting the movie uses fits perfectly with the world portrayed in the film. Most of the Pokemon look great, however there are a few notable exceptions in areas such as the lack of shadowing. The story is pretty basic and predictable but interesting none the less. The area where this movies most lacks is in the acting. Actors like Ryan Reynolds and Bill Nighy are great but the main leads are a bit lacking charisma and boring. This can be heavily overlooked due to it being a children's film though. The nostalgia and world are truly the most important parts of this film from my point of view and the movie captures these moments perfectly. I was thoroughly impressed by this film and hope there are future installments. Expand

Pokemon Detective Pikachu
Pros vs Cons Review (5/14/19)

Pros:
What I loved about this movie was the fact that I could tell that the creators adored the world of Pokemon and wanted to do their best to honor the franchise by giving this fantasy world a true sense of realism not found in the games or show. I felt like I was there and for the first time, I felt like Pokemon were real. I know that's a common praise among the viewers of the film, but it truly does give that illusion and for that I applaud this film but that's not the only place where it shines. Everything from the colors, the music, the bits of lore taken from the games, it's all so wonderful and it doesn't stray away from getting emotional. Ryan Reynolds delivers too, as odd as his role may of been, he did fantastic. But as much as I could gush about this movie, it does have issues as do all movies.

Cons:
This movie is strange, I didn't expect the strongest story going into this but it does try to tell a complicated story. The attempt for me falls flat, as I stated before the emotion is there and moments genuinely have great pay-off story wise, but overall the story is just kind of, for me at least, a side piece for the greater interest of the world. Relating to that is some of the dialogue, it can be hit or miss especially with the comedy but this is to be expected since you got to have jokes for both kids and adults to have a successful kids movie, but still it was a bit disappointing to not have too many great comedic moments especially since Ryan Reynolds is among the cast. Also in terms of the twists and the villain... It just either doesn't impact or it doesn't make sense, I won't go to in-depth but if you've seen the movie hopefully you'll understand what I mean. Overall: Detective Pikachu is a wonderful, magical movie that has excellent world building but sadly a weak plot that, despite having some truly excellent moments, holds it back from being perceived in excellence. Again, I still loved the movie and I still recommend it to all who are interested because this is a wonderful film that deserves at least a single watch. 7.5/10 rounded to an 8 points

So I may be biased here ^_^; I caught some Easter Eggs, I enjoyed the animation (one of the best CGI I have seen), the voice acting was good (I saw Czech dab which isn't usually this good in my ears), and the story wasn't half bad.

Yes, it has its flaws. Some things felt like "it has to happen as we had no better idea", but there weren't so many of them. For me, the weirdest was the ending. Kinda anti-climatic I would say. I expected something showier (like in the first movies), but it was still okay.

I know some pokemon looked weird or creepy, but those weren't on the screen for so long. some jokes may have been for older people, but I know the manga can be quite dark in places too.

to sum it up - every Pokemon fan will enjoy it, those outside of the fandom may not so much. but if you get this movie on the disc or not Netflix or anywhere else, give it a go. You may find a rare gem for yourself ;-)

Still a solid base loved the movie, and after watching it I understandI was really skeptical about the movie, the reviews were either one of confusement by general audience, disappointment by fans and harsh bashing from professional critics. Still a solid base loved the movie, and after watching it I understand why. The movie is more like Blade Runner than the Pokemon cartoon it is based on, and for a movie that’s based on a game that’s about having pokemon battle each other it has very little direct action, and I do have some criticism which I will get back to because this last point was a unnecessary slap in the face to the die hard fans. The fans hated it because it wasn’t like the series, critics are just critics and general audience was confused by a solid grimdark detective movie set in a silly pokemon world. That the movie was dark helps with the CGI effects, and gives the movie a very dark tone which is strengthened by the fact that yes, pokemon can and do in fact kill humans if lose control. A lot of criticism is aimed at the script, which unwarranted because for once a video game adaptation has a solid plot which you can follow and even has a few satisfying twists and set ups with pay offs. The pacing is also great, it pushes the movie along without leaving you behind. The characters are very likable, the main character comes off as unlikable in the beginning as a bland insurance appraiser with his Ash Ketchum buddy seemingly should be the main character, and you are left wondering, “what’s happening? Why are we following the insurance salesman and not Ash Ketchum lookalike?” but this twists later after he meets pikachu, it adds to his character, he is flawed but becomes a hero by the end, how it’s supposed to be. The female costar comes off as typical Disney obnoxious reporter already at the top, but twist in second scene you realize she is at the bottom working herself up and she is likable with her psyduck partner. As for the actual plot of the villain, like most monster or fantastical movies its asinine in many ways like Ridley Scotts Prometheus, like but still it works because the detective story is what’s interesting and the main plot is the mystery of Pikachu and not really Mewtwo. And Ryan Reynolds Pikachu was truly amazing, he gives the little yellow mouse or whatever so much personality you can’t help but love him. And I see many cricism saying the movie was not funny, I was laughing out loud at many jokes Reynolds Pikachu comes with, it is not in your face and I think most of the jokes flew by people not paying attention to the dialogue because there isn’t any slapstick humor. And to get back to the criticism with the slap in the face of the diehard fans, this movie has a 20min running scene in a forest and mountain which doesn’t add anything to the movie, the visuals look great, but in order to give some deserved fanservice to the pokemon fans out there these 20minutes should have been spent showing off a proper Pokemon Battle in the Stadium, we see a 5sec visual of two Pokemon trainers going at it at a grand arena, and it looks freaking amazing, I would have loved to watched that battle and this would have satiated the fans, I don’t think it would have been more expensive because the moving forest/mountain pokemon scene surely also was expensive af but using that money and time on a proper 20min battle in the stadium as a bro nod to the fans would have pushed this movie to a 10/10 and made the fans happy too. Surprisingly good and enjoyable film. Expand

I collected the cards, played the video games, and watched the TV show. What kept me coming back to the franchise wasn't Ash, Brock, or whatever anime thot they were traveling with at the time. It was the delightfully imaginative creatures that made up the world around them. The humans were more of a nuisance than anything and that hasn't changed with this movie.

I'm not convinced Justice Smith has leading man potential. He can definitely act, but lacks the charisma or flair necessary for real star power. Better to save him for those inconsequential supporting roles like the one he had in Fallen Kingdom. Kathryn Newton's character is just flat out annoying. An assemblage of all the trite intern-wannabe-reporter tropes in desperate need of an actual personality behind them. The only other cast member to show up in flesh and blood and get any sort of real screen time is Bill Nighy. He's fantastic. But like I said, it's the Pokémon themselves that are the real draw of Detective Pikachu and on that front it succeeds marvelously. I can't get over how well they brought the franchise to life in live-action. The Pokémon look incredible and it adheres to the lore in such a way that will make you forget this didn't come straight from Japan. I stared at the screen transfixed as I witnessed my childhood dream of pocket monsters existing in the real world become as close to a reality as possible. It's great wish-fullfilment and luckily a pretty good adventure to boot.

The plot will hold no surprises for anyone with it's incredibly obvious twists, but plays out in a way that makes it more accessible to a wider audience than any of the animated movies ever did. Even my mother who couldn't tell a Jigglypuff from a Togepi had a good time. This is thanks to a solid sense of humor and exciting set-pieces. Ryan Reynolds voice acting, which I was admittedly worried about, makes the already amusing shenanigans all the more humorous. Although, you really mean to tell me he couldn't clean up his pottymouth for one kids movie? It's so uncomfortable hearing Pikachu cuss.

Detective Pikachu is held back a bit by its predictable plot and unlikable human leads. Yet ultimately manages to rise above its faults thanks to spectacular action, a lot of love and care, a healthy amount of laughs, and the always endearing Pokémon themselves. Not bad for the franchise's first Western outing.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My overall feelings on Detective Pikachu collect into a "7" score, which is by and large the best score of a live-action video game adaptation I have given. Everything else has honestly been 4 or worse, but Detective Pikachu deserves recognition for not being great, but actually succeeding in catering to fans AND ALSO being a watchable movie. Pros:
Pokemon are animated beautifully and I was immersed
They lightly touch on the PKMN trainer thing, make it seem like they are manchildren which was funny
Ryan Reynolds almost carries the movie with his presence as a yellow, electric furball
The main lead is a pretty good actor for someone I've never heard of or seen before
Tons and tons of references, easter eggs everywhere in scenery or dialogue making this movie an absolute treat for Pokemon fans

The Mehs:
The Pokemon are animated beautifully BUT the variety runs out halfway through. I think their budget only allowed for 50 or so Pokemon to be rendered and animated, and when most of your movie takes place in a gigantic city, this really sticks out. There's nearly a thousand in the universe today.
The reason for Rime Citys existence is that it allows humans and Pokemon to co-exist and leave peacefully, with no trainers and no battles. Ok, so basically the whole premise of Pokemon, sans the trainers and battles? It seems like they overlooked something on their part, because there are so many instances in the anime, movies and games where people describe pokemon battles are something they can use to bond with their Pokemon stronger. Traits of loyalty, determination and feelings of love and protection for one another, the Pokemon AND its trainer, come from battles. Just seems like they missed the reasoning for this one thing.
And finally for the Mehs, the story. It's nothing new. You've seen the same twists and turns in other media before. It moves along briskly, but you have past experience.

The Bad:
God damn does the female lead bring forth a bad performance. Her introduction scene was almost cringeworthy, and for the rest of the film, her performance never felt genuine. I know that the actress is probably the most avid Pokemon fan out of the cast, but her acting really wasn't great, felt like she was reading lines. Very big misfire. And a personal nitpick I'd like to make: where was all the downtime? Did it all get cut in post-production? Part of why this movie is pretty watchable is the brisk pace, but there is almost no downtime between scenes! I wanted to see more shots of Pokemon living with their daily lives of people, casually and in business, even communicating with each other, but sometimes they only give off a presence as if they are decorations or pets. There is a scene late in the movie where the lead tries to communicate with wild Bulbasaur. Pokemon don't know human language, but they can read and feel you accurately, which this entire scene tried to convey. This needed to be a theme recurring through the whole movie! Especially considering Pikachu can actually be heard by the male lead. Well, now that I think about it, if Pokemon can only feel and understand you through emotion and body language, and even if the male lead can understand Pikachu for some reason, why is the Pikachu able to understand the male leads English? That's a can of worms.

Let's get to the good stuff: great rendering of your favorite POKEMON and another superb performance by Ryan Reynolds, who has another franchise in his hands beside Deadpool. The bad stuff: it is a film that is essentially a fan service; it creates this incredible render yet it struggles to do anything to it. The story line is entertaining, yet it offers little surprises. It is a film that is aimed at the kiddies, so you can't expect too much. It is not like the original 'Lego Movie' that elevates the material. It is a good film, but not great in my book. Expand

And I don't think I'm speaking for myself here, but the team behind things has constantly proven me wrong ever since that announcement. Even up until I left my screening of the actual film itself. To say this is the greatest video game movie of all time might not hold much discernable weight at this juncture -- and for good measure -- but what "Detective Pikachu" pioneers for should not be left unsung. Video game adaptations for the cinema that aren't just hollow fan service? With living, breathing characters that have needs and who are capable of being cared for? A story that's worth a damn, with sweetness and even a few surprises along the way? It's possible and "Detective Pikachu" is that adorable and plucky proof. Expand

At its best, the movie exudes some of the childhood whimsy of the Chris Columbus Harry Potter films. It's fun, but doesn't quite stick the landing in the biggest moments.

An excellent first attempt at a live action Pokemon movie. The designs were nice and nothing like the initial Sonic Movie CGI(i'm assuming they fix sonic haha).

A decent story with some flaws, but still enjoyable.

The beginning scene seemed to set up what would be something big, you could simply tell. I still feel that his delivery in the beginning wasn't believable or very sensitive. The weight of the journey that they were going on wasn't apparent until Detective Pikachu showed up, which I think really puts a damper on Justice Smith's performance. Ryan Reynolds on the other hand shows the delicacy of the circumstance with comedy (what he's the best at.) Justice instead comes off in a more negative and immature way which was a script issue. The part where they talk and reflect on what happened gave me chills, Justice's acting really only worked when Ryan Reynolds was there to pump some optimism into him. Kathryn does a great job as Lucy Stevens, she really pushes that small reporter and a big pond brand that's optimism always shines through. Also her Psyduck is perfect and Pikachu and his' interactions are pure gold. Mr Mime was a disgrace though, his scenes may have been funny but his awful and hideous character design had me more nauseous than anything. It's third act is really where things pick up. Mewtwo is so "present" and "bold" that you can feel the fear in some of these characters when he nears. Also this is the act where you can really appreciate the world building, it's so beautiful and gigantic. But the part where I nearly shed a tear was a scene that featured Bulbasaur, it really gave me the chills. Overall I think the script may have been a little flawed, but the Pokemon (why we're at this movie) were fantastic. Ryan Reynolds' Pikachu is really what made this movie so charming and memorable. But not even his character can escape some flaws which all lie in the ending. Expand

Enjoyable movie for adult and teens alike.
It's a simple movie so it doesn't blow your mind but it keep you entertainend for less than 2 hours.
Plot is dragging itself toward the end but nothing to unbearable.
The movie is about a twenty-something young fellow seeking clues on the death of a member of his family in a pokemon friendly city. During his "quest" he is called to face up to some family unserolved issue regarding his youngness.
Good fx, some humor, pokemons are always present on screen, some action and some moral for young wiever.
The movie is targeted toward spectators that are at home with pokemon obviously...but just watching some cartoon episodes back in the days (or spending some time with the mobile game) is enough to catch most of the references of the francise to appreciate the cameos.
Reynols dubbing is hilarous without beeing vulgar, and add a lot at the fun factor of this movie

Expand

Or even one where it's shortened out because they want to spread hate toward critics. Lord, are they the worst…

What a relief to finally talk positively about a Videogame Movie (for a while),yeah? Pokémon Detective Pikachu is a delightful experience that is indeed going to entertain a lot of people.
A Videogame Movie that is a Slappy go-lucky version of Who Framed Roger Rabbit set in this Fifth Element type world surrounded by adorable fuzzy creatures must be a dumb concept, but Writer/Director Rob Letterman injects some life to it thanks to a Screenplay (written alongside Jurassic World's Derek Connolly) that, surprisingly, takes the Audience seriously, while still being a fun albeit Emotional buddy cop movie with Pokémons. The emotions factor may be the most interesting thing to talk about. It starts seriously, but then it goes full-on buddy cop movie until the end. This is because it's mostly centered about the friendship between Tim Goodman (played by Justice Smith) and Pikachu, played with life by Ryan Reynolds, who sometimes feels like Deadpool in a CG Fursuit. Everything about the story seems like they cared about the project instead of “We're going to do this thing for money!” (That new Doom movie from Universal looks great!),and the Effects surrounding it are beautiful to look at. From *insert Pokémon name here* to the Set Design and concepts, the movie must have a gorgeous Artbook!
But there are big low points with the movie. For starters, this seems like a great Screenplay, but it's also one that reminded me a lot of The LEGO Movie. Think about it. “Big city where everything is flawless because the President wants to” , “Ethical Evil President threatens to destroy city with this powerful MacGuffin”...It even becomes ‘89 Batman at some point in the 3rd Act (for 30 Seconds) with the Balloon Parade. Add to that an overuse of Plot Twists (that are “very twisty”,but annoying at a point) and a set-up for a Sequel, and you almost had a misfire.
But hey,at least it was a fun romp from start to finish. When I talked about the controversy of Depp and Heard on Instagram,I said “GOD,what a plot twist!”,but I'm starting to think that, for all its flaws, this is probably the better Plot Twist. A good 2ht Movie filled with 40 something Hours of Gameplay must be something we all wished for, right? Especially one that we needed after we saw a big 3hr Superhero Funeral. So yeah,Detective Pikachu is a blast, and that's all that matters. Go see it.

This movie in one hour and forty-five minutes but really it feels like a two and a half hour long film. This is due to for a majority of the film it felt really slow and that it needed to pick up the pace. This leads to a very quick paced climax for the film. It felt as if they realized that this film was going on too long and had to quickly wrap it. So while you’re watching the ending it leads to everything happening at rapid speed. If the film took it’s time and organized itself a bit better than it would’ve made for a more enjoyable film. Obviously, I’m going to mention how great the Pokémon look. I mean seriously this movie went all out on them. Each one looked like it was taken straight out of the game and or anime and into our world. Usually, this leads to terrible CGI where it looks like a cartoon or that it isn’t there but for this case, it actually worked. I love Ryan Reynolds as Pikachu and he was definitely a stand out for this film. He brought all of the humour in this film and it was great. The other actors did great jobs having the tough job of interacting with CGI creatures all day. I do love the humour in this movie because it’s a perfect balance of jokes for kids and some for the adults in the audience. This helps because the adults who were dragged to see this movie can enjoy those jokes. Honestly, I know this is a very teeny tiny spoiler thing but there are two plot twists that if you pay attention you can easily figure out. The last thing I want to mention is the music in this film. Henry Jackman, the composer for this film, did an excellent job on the music. In the end, this film is good for people who either just want a fun movie or are casual fans of Pokémon but really this film is for the hardcore fans of Pokémon. I give Pokémon Detective Pikachu a 7.5/10. Expand

I have been a fan of the series since its inception, and while the plot and acting is nothing spectacular, it was worth it just to see the art design and CGI, as well as feel the familiar feeling of nostalgia. I also have to mention that I actually thought Ryan Reynolds was good as Pikachu's voice in this and it was fun to watch.

Also, movie critics, you are all absolutely terrible. This is a Pokémon movie for Pokémon fans, not an oscar favourite for next year, I cannot believe how seriously some of you took this movie when it was made for fun, of course it won't hold up objectively. I'm surprised how much you are all complaining considering how diverse the casting was... Anyways, my point is to IGNORE THEM, they are an absolute joke nowadays.

+ Fun for all ages
+ Great atmosphere
+ Great CGI
+ Some good comedy
+ Still feels like Pokémon
+ Pikachu is great
+ Excellent world building

- Subpar acting
- Subpar writing
- Plot pacing is all over the place

Overall, same as I said before, if you are a Pokémon fan, then this movie is a fun and entertaining little getaway, if you are not a Pokémon fan, this story will make no sense and you will probably not appreciate it as much. This is an easy 7 for me.

I loved seeing how the Pokémon were integrated into the scenes, the background, and the overall world; the creators took advantage of it to make some eye-pleasing transitions as well as fill each frame with a distinct sense of life. I also liked the musical score and the way it called back to the gameboy Pokemon roots while adding in modern musical elements. I also liked the characters; they weren’t perfect but they weren’t annoying either; and as everyone predicted, Ryan Reynolds as Pikachu steals the show. However, while this movie is graceful and smart, it’s at the same time, clunky and incoherent. There’s often a lack of explanation for motivation or weight to a character’s actions; and so throughout the movie, (especially the 2nd half) I had to main questions: “Huh?” And “Why?” But overall, Detective Pikachu is a film I’d recommend to not just pokemon fans (because they’ll love identifying every creature in the background) but anyone looking for something new to watch. This movie’s not perfect but it set out to make something new and mostly succeeded. I enjoyed it. Expand

The story was genuinely interesting and I am happy to say everything I thought it was gonna cheese through actually did not by being refreshing, funny and above average VFX.

Ryan Reynolds seems like he can do no wrong anymore, doesn't it... I bet his choice in scripts have greatly improved after Green lantern almost ended up killing his career. He was the best part of the movie since a quippy Ryan Reynolds and a Yellow Mouse that shoots Electricity is not something that should traditionally work. I tip my hat to you Mr. Reynolds for pulling it off.

The lead was tolerable, but only because Justice Smith in Jurassic Park left a very bad after taste for me... So i was glad he was not as cringe-worthy. The villain's were adequate for the kind of story the movie was telling.

All of the Pokemon action was not Top Class.. But everything was above average enough and used sparingly that it did not overtly attempt action scenes just because.

All in all a good watch.

Yup it is childish romance, with some childish drama and a lot of pokemons... but this is what it wanted to be. There aren't any real character development, but the movie wasn't about that anyway. Ryan Reynolds, as usual, stole the show. He kept it funny from when he was introduced until the very end. It was also very heartfelt though and made me shed a tear. The CGI effects are amazing as well; the Pokémon all look great in their computer rendered state. My biggest complaint is the cheesy, incompetent acting. Justice Smith and his "reporter friend" have no acting talent whatsoever. The plot made up for it though, as it was charming and original. I'm excited for a sequel to come out, as I hope it made enough money for one. If you like Pokémon, you'll love this movie. Expand

A wonderful experience for fans of the franchise. However if you are relatively inexperienced with the characters you may get lost quickly. I gotta admit seeing Mewtwo in the first few minutes sold me.

Pokémon Detective Pikachu is a movie entirely made interesting by fascinating world-building and the exceptional comedic voice acting of Ryan Reynolds, who plays a well-animated, extremely cute, and mystery-solving electric mouse.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Detective Pikachu is a triumph of low expectations. It succeeds at dragging the world of Pokémon into the world of live-action and laying the foundations for a new “universe” of follow-up films with aesthetic continuity. Much like Rogue One showed that Star Wars movies do not always have to be about space wizards, Detective Pikachu tells a delightful little story that leans just the right amount on the nostalgia of the games without battles or trainers. Wife says, the movie “dodges a problem with the premise with the games, which is that a child drops out of a school to learn how to fight with animals.”

Friend made the point that DP is essentially a mash-up of Batman Begins and Get Out, which I think is kind of a brilliant formation. To that I’ll add that anyone who has seen the movie Zootopia would be pretty underwhelmed by DP if it weren’t for the fact that there are **** Pokémon galore in this movie. There are a shocking number of twists in a movie that seems like it couldn’t be that complex. Ditto, my favorite Pokémon, is featured. Everyone does a pretty good job acting, including Suki Waterhouse (who is once again hilariously underutilized), except for Blockers‘s Kathryn Newton who doesn’t seem to be able to decide if she’s in a noir or a parody of a noir. One might say that’s true of the movie writ large, but everyone else seems to settle on a single tone of delivery. There are indeed sexy Pokémon, which is what most of us were wondering when we walked into this movie.

Spoilers: If there are any critiques (and they are few and petty), the film as a whole suffers from Eragon syndrome–a lot of voiceovers and awkward cuts from Pikachu at knee level to close up shots of human faces reacting. Bill Nighy’s character is very obviously a self-hating disabled person trope. The entire plot of both this eccentric city and the Evil Plan is at times recycled and outlandish: involves catching (a lab-produced clone??) Mewtwo as step one. But probably the thing that bothers me most is a minor detail in the protagonist’s bedroom.

In what world is the title fight between a legendary bird (which apparently has been caught?) and a… Steelix? Why would anyone go to that event except to watch Articuno mop the floor with one of the first Pokémon you clear out of your PC when you run out of room? I was so confused by it that it was genuinely hard to focus on what’s going on in the scene. If anyone has any good ideas let me know.

The film arrested me for its beginning of mystery that reminded me of some episodes of detective series. (I love detective stories :)). The CGI of the Pokémon are great. It is not something that makes us feel strange at the beginning of the film, because it really looks like they are there. I loved the characters presented (Psyduck is my favorite: 3) and found the ending a little predictable. (I don't mean the villain from the movie> Expand

In hindsight, if I were actually a Pokémon fan I'd probably like this movie a lot more or maybe even a lot less. As it stands though, this was very average to me and a bit boring at parts.

I was going to only give it a 6/10 until the ending.

The ending is what gained it a star.

But it’s the effects that really make the movie at points, they manage to capture the art style very well, and some of the CGI is downright impressive. The story was alright, if not a little bland, but towards the end, where it became too ambitious and confusing for a Detective Pikachu movie. Ryan Reynolds does great as the titular character and Justice Smith is fine as the lead. That pretty much describes the entire film: fine. Expand

Largely because it seems like such a difficult thing to translate all of their 2d designs into a 3d environment without having them end up looking incredibly creepy. Just look at the goombas in the Super Mario Bros. or whatever that blue thing was in the trailer for the Sonic the Hedgehog movie and you’ll see how bad these kind of adaptations can go. But here, the VFX team and conceptual designers behind this movie nailed every one of these designs, bringing these Pokemon in to a live action world without losing any of the charm of the original designs. Beyond the visual aesthetic, they do a fantastic job at establishing all of the Pokemon’s personalities. There are so many little touches that show a real appreciation for the franchises lore, like Charizard's weakness being his tail or mentioning Cubone wears his mother's skull. Plus there are so many great gags and moments through seeing the Pokemon interact with the world, like Machop organising traffic around a napping snorlax or a team of squirtles working for the fire department. Seeing the way they adapt their world around these Pokemon is sure to satisfy any long time fan of the franchise. But for people who didn’t grow up with the games, there’s probably not going to be much here. Unlike something like Who Framed Roger Rabbit, where even without all the animated characters there’s still a cool noir inspired mystery, the rest of Detective Pikachu doesn’t really hold up. We have a basic setup where after a detective goes missing, the detective's son arrives in the city to find out what happened. Whilst there he bumps into a Pikachu who is a detective and sets out to help him find out what happened to his father. They quickly uncover your typical conspiracy and realise that they need to save the city.

There’s a lot of inconsistencies throughout the film that don’t really add up and you’ll probably be able to guess most of the plot within the first 20 minutes of the film. Although there is one goofy twist with one Pokemon which I won’t spoil but did get a few great chuckles out of me. As much as I’m still hoping for a Danny Devito dub of the film, Reynolds did a pretty great job as Detective Pikachu. He infuses a lot of his own personality in to the role, but still keeps it distinct enough so it doesn’t just feel like another Deadpool. But whilst all the Pokemon characters are all colourful and memorable, all the humans are just very bland by comparison. Kathryn Newton was pretty funny early on, playing her role as ridiculously over the top as a live action anime character should be, but it felt like her role simmered out as the film went on. Then the rest of the human felt like they were only there to move the story along and didn’t have enough of a personality to leave any real impression. This film is probably going to split audiences into two categories. If you’re a fan of the franchise, there’s enough comedy and fan service that you’ll probably have a good time. But if Pokemon’s never been your thing, this isn’t the film that’s going to change your mind. I guess it may technically be the best movie based on a video game. But when the competition includes the likes of Uwe Boll movies, Max Payne and Assassins Creed, that’s not really much of a compliment.

I get the feeling that Ryme City's ideology of pokemon living outside of pokeballs and living equally as humans is backed by modern societal issues, but would rather not dive into that. Again regarding budget, could've focused more on the pokemon instead of the story, for instance, saw many Growliths in the background, but not one could ever get any screen time.. sigh Expand

But from my point of view, he's just mediocrity. Yes, the Pokemon rip out a lot. They are wonderfully animated and set to music. Only they should have played a bigger role. The human characters, except Reynolds, pull the film down. The story is just adapted to the children and therefore to be seen for me. "Evil is " Good "and the other way around. Part 2 will certainly come. Expand
