While I was watching it I keep thinking if that terrible But we'll meaning Mario bros film which missed almost every mark. Well ludicrously and pokemon pikachuchu detective takes all those missed marks and hammers them home! The cgi is amazing and the casting is brave while the only issue I had was that at times it's not weird enough. And it's a really weird film. I'd say it's for adults more thank kids which might be a problem when making the budget back. The only real misstep is the story at times and the last 1/3 which is basically the plot of batman 1. Though by the end it's all neatly wrapped up. I feel they could have made it even more nature and ended up with something special But pokemon is for kids so that was never an option. One of the few films I'd watch again as there was so much going on. ULTIMATELY It will make you laugh and shout and its fun and goid natured. Go see it ! B- Expand

With appearances by Ryan Reynolds, Rita Ora, and Ken Watanabe, this movie seems accessible to viewers uninitiated to the Pokemon fandom without confusion or isolation.
Some of the dialogue was rough, and some of the animation rough on my eyes (I had a red blood vessel by the end), but I enjoyed this movie.

You can't ask me to be objective about this, and I don't have the slightest interest in pretending any kind of objectivity.
As a Pokemon fan since I was born, this is, without a doubt, the kind of movie I've been waiting for my entire life. And it delivered. I didn't expect it to be so good, I definitely didn't expect to laugh so much. Also, the plot is quite good, far better than critics are willing to admit. The only reason for not giving it a 10 is that, theoretically, it *could* be better in some ways.
If you really like (or used to like) Pokemon, you're gonna love it, and you must see it. If you're not, there's not much for you in this.

But from my point of view, he's just mediocrity. Yes, the Pokemon rip out a lot. They are wonderfully animated and set to music. Only they should have played a bigger role. The human characters, except Reynolds, pull the film down. The story is just adapted to the children and therefore to be seen for me. "Evil is " Good "and the other way around. Part 2 will certainly come. Expand

It already starts with the opening scene which immediately had me doubting if this could become any good further on. The story is pretty thin and we jump from one location to the other to show off some new Pokémon they could show off.

What ruins the whole film is the ultimate twist in the story. It was so un-Pokémon-like I gave up hope right there. Even visually giving it a thumbs down at that point tbh.

Quite frank, the "critics" gave this movie a 53% balancing out. Yet the user score is at least 2-3 points higher than the critics. The movie was fantastic, there is no way to go about it. Even if you have never seen pokemon before it gives you a lot of fun popculture references that you would not be able to miss. I don't doubt the "critics" of these movies are simply those that never grew up with the series. They are old boomers/gen X parents that think they run the world, and the score difference shows it.

I recommend all fans of the series to go see this movie, it is seriously great. There is no reason to believe the score we get from critics any longer.

The outcome of the movie shows the passion that all those had on it had and the movie and the Pokemon franchise as a whole. The sci-fi setting the movie uses fits perfectly with the world portrayed in the film. Most of the Pokemon look great, however there are a few notable exceptions in areas such as the lack of shadowing. The story is pretty basic and predictable but interesting none the less. The area where this movies most lacks is in the acting. Actors like Ryan Reynolds and Bill Nighy are great but the main leads are a bit lacking charisma and boring. This can be heavily overlooked due to it being a children's film though. The nostalgia and world are truly the most important parts of this film from my point of view and the movie captures these moments perfectly. I was thoroughly impressed by this film and hope there are future installments. Expand

I get the feeling that Ryme City's ideology of pokemon living outside of pokeballs and living equally as humans is backed by modern societal issues, but would rather not dive into that. Again regarding budget, could've focused more on the pokemon instead of the story, for instance, saw many Growliths in the background, but not one could ever get any screen time.. sigh Expand

First things first, I'm not a fan of Pokemon anymore and I've been stuck at gen 3 ever since then: I don't like pokemon, I don't care about pokemon, and I couldn't care less about pokemon on itself. The reason why I watched it it's because it tried to be something different, in a series of games and anime that is essentially the same - if not worse - and that never really innovated. This movie was a breath of fresh air and I was excited to see what was all about it, especially after playing the game which was REALLY good for an adventure game.

The movie is about a young boy named "nobody cares" who has to find his father "deadpool" while accompanied by "weebgirl" and a Pikachu, who's the movie real protagonist. Yeah I honestly don't remember any of the names of the main cast and for good reason: they're so bad and uninteresting that you could replace them with a cardboard figure and nobody would even notice the difference. The plot is about finding "nobody care"'s father and alongside they'll deal with Mewtwo, apparently from the region of Kanto - the first movie's region, if I'm right, making this is a sort of continuation...kinda? - and during this time they'll do some investigation, which brings one of the strongest points of the movie: it actually makes a good job at mixing real life with pokemon, much MUCH more than the original anime where it felt like we're invaders on an alien planet and I couldn't help but to say "wow this actually feels like a real pokemon world". Pokemon in the movie has a realistic look which tries to make them blend them but only works on some pokemon, like growlithes or aipoms, while others just feel out of place overall. Still, Kudos for the job done: I never really seen this kind of thing in any of the games or anime before (my sister plays them so I can see the "evolution" of pokemon) and I had no issue into believing that the world was our own just with pokemon in it. It really worked.

Too bad everything else sucks though.

So, story is all about finding the father of "nobody cares" and for doing that he'll find his father's pikachu, who can talk for some reasons - and I literally say for some reasons because it's never going to be explained - and later on they'll figure out that there's some conspiration and stuff, where they'll eventually find an area 51 kind of place and other stuff that nobody will care...seriously it's so badly explained I can't even remember half of it, it was so bad. Half of the plot is not explained, weebgirl literally pops out of nowhere and suddenly knows everything, nobody cares is such bad character that all he can do is whine and be confused, the bad guy is so OBVIOUS that I made a joke about him and I facepalmed so hard the cinema could hear my echo, and on top of that a lot of stuff is never explained and are just left behind.

On top of that the movie had a bad tendency to just be too kid friendly that it was disgustingly bad: a lot of "swearings" were teased, especially in my language, and there were even some scenes where "the blood" was basically removed by panning the camera over to not show the stuff. In fact, it was so badly done that I literally had no idea what happened, because in one scene Pikachu gets hit by a rock but it's not shown that he was actually wounded, so I just assumed he fainted.

Hey, hey you idiots, pokemon is a game/anime about monsters who fight with deadly gas, fire, psychic power, ice and more: I THINK some bruises or even some blood can be shown.

Bottom line, I really didn't like this movie: I was honestly curious about the detective Pikachu franchise because the game was pretty fun and Pikachu was a very fun character in the game - while the nobody cares of the game was just as bad if not even blander. Still, my point is that the movie is all about Pikachu and yes there were some funny parts, like the Mr. mime scene and even some chase scenes were okay. But that's the problem: it was OKAY, everything was just okay and I honestly blame the fact it tried to be too kid friendly, to avoid any violence so that the rating wouldn't be too high. I'm sorry but if you're trying to make an action movie for kids, make an action movie for kids like it should be and don't hold back.

As it is, this movie is just a mediocre adaptation overall: I only recommend it for the true fans of pokemon or if you have some kids who need some attention or you need to keep them at bay.

For everyone else...stick with the game this movie's based off. It's a whole lot better and it's much more fun to play.

PS: the main character's name is Tim Goodman, but do you honestly care that I told you?

Pokémon Detective Pikachu is based on the 2016 video game, Detective Pikachu, which was released on Nintendo 3DS and also the first ever Pokémon live action movie on the big screen.

The plot of the movie is basically follow the same plot from the video game with some changes. Tim Goodman (Smith) is a 21 years old insurance agent and a former Pokémon Trainer, who receive news that his father, Harry Goodman, a detective who died in a car crash while investigating a case.

He travels to Ryme City to collect his father’s assets from his apartment where he discovers a talking Pikachu (Reynolds), who wears a detective cap which belongs to Harry. For some reasons, only Tim can understand Pikachu while no one else can. Pikachu was Harry’s Pokémon partner and they were investigating a case until his car was crashed and his body was not found.

Pikachu suffers amnesia and Harry’s cap is the only clue to Pikachu’s identity. Both Pikachu and Tim find a mysterious gas known as R in Harry’s apartment which might have something to do with Harry’s investigation. Needing some help to solve the case and finding Harry, they seek help from Lucy Stevens (Newton), an intern reporter who have been following up some stories on Harry’s death.

As a fan of Pokémon franchise and grew up with it, I was looking forward to this movie. The good news is this movie is not bad all. In fact, this movie could break the curse of bad video game movies and it is even better than 2018’s Tomb Raider and Rampage. The filmmakers of this movie have done a really great job in making the movie fun and exciting to watch. I had worries that the movie may end up worst like the rest of the video game movies but it turned out better than I expected.

The Pokémon creatures in this movie were very well designed and they look very good on the big screen thanks to the extra efforts of the filmmakers for doing their best to make them look a little bit of realistic while maintaining the creatures’ original design without deviating too much. Ryan Reynolds, Justice Smith and Kathryn Newton have done a great job in their performance. Kudos to Reynolds for his voice portrayal of Pikachu which he made Pikachu sounds like Deadpool.

The only problem with this movie is the storyline is cliché and have been overused in many other movies. If you ignore this problem, you can probably enjoy the movie without thinking too much. This movie is not just exciting and fun but also very nostalgic as well. You do not need to play Detective Pikachu to enjoy the movie. Just being a Pokémon fan is enough.

Overall, I really loved this movie pretty much like how I enjoyed watching 2018’s Ready Player One. To all Pokémon fans, you definitely must watch this movie. Last but not least, this could be the best video game movie I have ever watched in my life.

As someone with only a passing knowledge of the franchise, I may have missed some nuance, but I was never lost.

The human leads were a bit lackluster, but with a film that is wall-to-wall Pokemon it's hard to be annoyed or bored. There's whimsy and wonder bursting out of every nook and cranny in this movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I found this to be a really feel good movie for all ages. It had a good lesson at the end and was not only funny for kids but for adults too. Ryan Reynolds, as usual, stole the show. He kept it funny from when he was introduced until the very end. It was also very heartfelt though and made me shed a tear. The CGI effects are amazing as well; the Pokémon all look great in their computer rendered state. My biggest complaint is the cheesy, incompetent acting. Justice Smith and his "reporter friend" have no acting talent whatsoever. The plot made up for it though, as it was charming and original. I'm excited for a sequel to come out, as I hope it made enough money for one. If you like Pokémon, you'll love this movie. Expand

And don't listen to people who say "how can fans of the franchise question critics, opinions rule". That is flawed logic. Which is quite a funny thing, by the way because now even the fans try to refer to this posting and want to call it the "worst" as if it is spreading "hate". No. It doesn't. Unfair and inappropriate criticism, off-context steming from the lack of information is a non-contribution so it is absolutely legitimate to warn from. Being misinformed is one thing but already knowing that it will influence your rating heavily is a big issue. Do the fans here not point out flaws in the movie just because they know the franchise? They do.
If you already know you give it an unfair treatment through the lack of knowledge then you are criticising inappropriately. And what is this nonsense of "please ignore the 10 reviews"? So trust the other so-called "opinions" but not the 10s, that acknowledge flaws? 10-movies have flaws. And you can integrate the lack of knowledge but less than 5 primarily because you don't know it is just not ok.
___

This movie was absolutely solid.

Is it the most logical movie of all time and does it have a super original story? No. What does, really? Still for the first real theatre-released live-action movie of the Pokémon franchise this has been absolutely fantastic. And the way the story was presented was still quite original in its own way because of how it relies on certain elements that are just not given in similiar stories most of the time.
What can I say about this movie that got me a bit on the negative side? The lore is different. They say stuff like "Pokémon don't understand what we say, they feel it" yadayada. Well, that is definitely not true - in OTHER continuities. But this is a new continuity so who cares. Same goes for some other things like "in old times people caught Pokémon" et cetera and then showing ancient drawings when the game continuity actually has NPCs saying the exact opposite: The trainer stuff is quite new and humans and Pokémon once even lived together, eating on the same table and all (yes, there are people reading NPC dialogue, unbelievable!)
Also the way they treated the strongest Pokémon made by mankind (Mewtwo) in this movie during the finale was a bit something I did not like but that is because I grew up with the first REAL Pokémon movie and the Mewtwo in the original movie (which definitely got them some of their plot details) would never have let a villain do this to "him" - but stuff from before like him being used or how he was caught was a good parallel to how he was originally made in the anime or how Giovanni tried to get him back in the second Mewtwo movie "Mewtwo returns".
What did they do fanservice-wise that I really like how they re-used the Mewtwo stuff, just as mentioned. Also how they used the instrumental version of the Western opening and actually let Ryan Reynolds sing it. I must really say - for a not even 2 hour lasting movie there was a lot happening, especially plot-wise for a movie like Pokémon, I really have no idea what those critics are babbling about because I already watched it twice and yesterday I was justb surprised how far the movie was advanced in such a short time. Is the master plan of the villain cheesy? Yes, it is. But it is supposed to bring the world of Pokémon which is a kid's show on the big screen (as said, live action, Pokémon has enough movies). I am not that fine with how they displayed the humor because it got a bit too extreme for Pokémon. The manga is very dark and aggressive and even the games use words like "kill" and "die" very late in the games, although the theme was already there from the first generation on but constantly bringing up that topic or talking about throwing up, making a drug joke or bed jokes is just a bit too much. Not that I did not find it funny or that it was such an incredible no-go, it is just something displayed a LITTLE bit to extreme for something that is primarily associated with the games and anime instead of the manga. Some Pokémon were really goodlooking, some were a bit too much with the uncanny valley effect. Pokémon like Bulbasaur for example should definitely have been remade. Pikachu, Mewtwo, Jigglypuff, Psyduck, Charizard and Gyarados were top-notch.

Overall it was very entertaining. A good start for what I hope is the first step to more Pokémon movies and children will surely love it. Old veterans/freaks like me will surely enjoy lots of the fanservice during this nostalgia trip even if it is not exactly like the other continuities. Although they already mentioned Kanto, so who know what comes next.

Since most people might be missing me saying this: Ryan Reynolds was great. I think that's a given and does not need to be mentioned. Most people like him so this does not need long paragraphs.

Knowing that we’re also getting a Sonic the Hedgehog movie later this year, Pokémon Detective Pikachu, feels like the start of the “Super Smash Bros. Cinematic Universe.” It’s lately been a trend other Marvel-imitators are trying to take on, even Warner Bros. is trying to start its own “Dark Universe” with its latest reboots of Godzilla, the Mummy, and King Kong. This first ever live-action Pokémon movie perhaps exists with that unhealthy mentality. Whether or not if that’s the case, this feature film will quickly turn Hollywood wobblier than it was before.

The passive protagonist of this adaptation off the legendary franchise, Tim, is a lonely young man who apparently feels regret from his father’s death, and by the very end of his journey we see him take, he is still the same person. Any giant, fat, sleepy behemoth would have a higher IQ than him, at least such a beast can go through enough change to wake up for food; Tim never even acts out of free will. To make it even more dull, he gets a completely unnecessary love interest, Lucy, and as they accidentally clash heads as they both lean to pick something up—as a way to push their romance further. But spoiler alert: their love subplot is completely forgotten two-thirds of the way through. A chance to grieve over death never lands, for any information about the demise of Tim’s father only conveys itself via advanced holographic technology run by a shadowed bad guy stroking a feline without reason. It’s the same atmosphere and formula from every bland piece of Saturday morning cartoon entertainment.

Tim and Lucy live in a magical place called “Ryme City,” that was founded with the intent of bringing peace between people and Pokémon without any more battles (like Zootopia or some crap). Some of the cute little critters work there as firefighters and others as sushi chefs, but none of them work as guards around a top-secret facility. How come? Simple: because the kids got to break into it for the climax to happen. If it wasn’t for their trusty plot armor, the two leads’ passionless performance wouldn’t be bogged down enough for you to fantasize yourself in their place amidst such a colorful cast. By colorful though, I meant their exteriors, not their personalities.

Now, Lucy, the sole female character of the entire film, is by far the blandest of the cast, with so little disposition that she does not even care if her city is foremost masculine. In Ryme City, there are some Pokémon with ears used as DJ sound speakers, another muscular one with four arms guides traffic, but there are no feminine professions like beauty salon or flower booth owners to be seen. How is it that throughout production, no women in the cast or crew spoke up about the lack of diversity?

To be fair though, the concept of being distinct from the others is well captured through the digital creations of the Pokémon; well enough so that they look faithful to their classic anime counterparts. You could reach out and stroke the fur of the angry, growling pink bulldog Pokémon, then the special effects of a transforming fuchsia blob balances out the charm with its downright creepiness. In total, every one of these Pokémon gives much joy, and once the credits roll, you will want to keep at least one as a pet. Although others you will not want as a pet, as a gang of ninja frogs with tongues wrapped around their necks match the aura of legit horror.

Still though, as much as the IMAX sight adds some drops of black gesso against the glorious bright neon colors, the visuals only serve as a distraction from the awful writing. Maybe the final narrative twist could be pretty amazing without a thinking cap worn on your head. When taking the visual experience into deeper consideration, it’s still not terribly memorable, aside from one sequence featuring a garden of various turtle-like Pokémon. But not even that has any real plot significance aside from looking really cool. I’d even have to say the awful Jurassic Park sequels have more memorable impact with their even mix of digital and practical effects.

Speaking of that garden scene, it tries to be a part of a failed environmental message about a bunch of genetically manipulated dinosaur creatures that pose a danger to the people. Sound familiar? That kind of environmental message is one big pile of Goldblum if you ask me. But the worst thing of all, the entire script is held together by a tired out neglectful father trope, with sentences about the evil of humanity present for good measure. It’s a bad case of all these ideas tossed together randomly without a goal in mind.

With all this weak creativity reliant on old properties… of course it means exploitative businesses like this one would resort to making bank off a horrific case of brand exploitation. I mean it: Pokémon Detective Pikachu is literally a brand of a brand of a brand!

An empty and shallow attempt to perpetuate this franchise that will undoubtedly continue for many years but this live-action adaptation doesn't offer anything new or interesting at all.

The mixture in my opinion doesn't work. You have to admit when things are like that.
I do think it will have a sequel and if so, they need a better script and better characters. Not always the chaos of visual effects everywhere means narrative quality.

Definitely for kids and maybe Pokemon fans but for the rest I don't think so.

And as an extra I must say that Ryan Reynolds doesn't give much personality to Pikachu and it's not like the character had much in the first place.

I collected the cards, played the video games, and watched the TV show. What kept me coming back to the franchise wasn't Ash, Brock, or whatever anime thot they were traveling with at the time. It was the delightfully imaginative creatures that made up the world around them. The humans were more of a nuisance than anything and that hasn't changed with this movie.

I'm not convinced Justice Smith has leading man potential. He can definitely act, but lacks the charisma or flair necessary for real star power. Better to save him for those inconsequential supporting roles like the one he had in Fallen Kingdom. Kathryn Newton's character is just flat out annoying. An assemblage of all the trite intern-wannabe-reporter tropes in desperate need of an actual personality behind them. The only other cast member to show up in flesh and blood and get any sort of real screen time is Bill Nighy. He's fantastic. But like I said, it's the Pokémon themselves that are the real draw of Detective Pikachu and on that front it succeeds marvelously. I can't get over how well they brought the franchise to life in live-action. The Pokémon look incredible and it adheres to the lore in such a way that will make you forget this didn't come straight from Japan. I stared at the screen transfixed as I witnessed my childhood dream of pocket monsters existing in the real world become as close to a reality as possible. It's great wish-fullfilment and luckily a pretty good adventure to boot.

The plot will hold no surprises for anyone with it's incredibly obvious twists, but plays out in a way that makes it more accessible to a wider audience than any of the animated movies ever did. Even my mother who couldn't tell a Jigglypuff from a Togepi had a good time. This is thanks to a solid sense of humor and exciting set-pieces. Ryan Reynolds voice acting, which I was admittedly worried about, makes the already amusing shenanigans all the more humorous. Although, you really mean to tell me he couldn't clean up his pottymouth for one kids movie? It's so uncomfortable hearing Pikachu cuss.

Detective Pikachu is held back a bit by its predictable plot and unlikable human leads. Yet ultimately manages to rise above its faults thanks to spectacular action, a lot of love and care, a healthy amount of laughs, and the always endearing Pokémon themselves. Not bad for the franchise's first Western outing.

Reynolds is tapping to his own beat, peel him off from the project and he is giving you his tight twenty minutes on stage.

Pokemon Detective Pikachu

Letterman works like a teenager. Or maybe because of the film's theme, he has adapted himself into those avid video game players. But we will get into Rob Letterman's, the director, work later, first let's put the banners in trial. What is with this weird urge to magnify the gaming world into magnanimous IMAX screen? Failing perpetually and miserably on justifying the course of this virtual world into a throbbing storytelling arcs, even someone so skillful as Steven Spielberg could only barely reach there with his hands. And then to expect us to chug up all the pretentious dose of visual effects while compromising ourselves to understand the narration that THEY are trying to say.

And yet, they come in and say, every time, that this project is the game changer. Does the film contradict all your opinions on the adaptations of video games? No. It does not. Particularly, individually, the film is exactly like the vfx, fluffy and cute when the lens looks at our lead, and incredibly fake while focusing on others. And the term "entertainment" that they put so much weight on, is not their gripping or innovative storyline, but the incredibly self-claimed blabbermouth whose version of improv is the only reliable rope to hang on to.

From start to finish, all you want is to see Ryan Reynolds come up with some bizarre reference or hilarious comment to lighten up the dull scene. Justice Smith in the lead is confused, in a good way, but emotionally distant, in a bad way. Another major crisis is the effortfully choreographed action sequence where the whole world collapses and they are told to run the montage sequence of vfx explosion carrying the film for that section and then they dare promote Pikachu to Pokemon Detective Pikachu with no brains involved on investigation.

And I don't think I'm speaking for myself here, but the team behind things has constantly proven me wrong ever since that announcement. Even up until I left my screening of the actual film itself. To say this is the greatest video game movie of all time might not hold much discernable weight at this juncture -- and for good measure -- but what "Detective Pikachu" pioneers for should not be left unsung. Video game adaptations for the cinema that aren't just hollow fan service? With living, breathing characters that have needs and who are capable of being cared for? A story that's worth a damn, with sweetness and even a few surprises along the way? It's possible and "Detective Pikachu" is that adorable and plucky proof. Expand

Acting: 7.5/10. Justice Smith, your better than hallmark at christmas, but you still need some work. Its forgivable / watchable / acceptable, though.

Pokemon Detective Pikachu
Pros vs Cons Review (5/14/19)

Pros:
What I loved about this movie was the fact that I could tell that the creators adored the world of Pokemon and wanted to do their best to honor the franchise by giving this fantasy world a true sense of realism not found in the games or show. I felt like I was there and for the first time, I felt like Pokemon were real. I know that's a common praise among the viewers of the film, but it truly does give that illusion and for that I applaud this film but that's not the only place where it shines. Everything from the colors, the music, the bits of lore taken from the games, it's all so wonderful and it doesn't stray away from getting emotional. Ryan Reynolds delivers too, as odd as his role may of been, he did fantastic. But as much as I could gush about this movie, it does have issues as do all movies.

Cons:
This movie is strange, I didn't expect the strongest story going into this but it does try to tell a complicated story. The attempt for me falls flat, as I stated before the emotion is there and moments genuinely have great pay-off story wise, but overall the story is just kind of, for me at least, a side piece for the greater interest of the world. Relating to that is some of the dialogue, it can be hit or miss especially with the comedy but this is to be expected since you got to have jokes for both kids and adults to have a successful kids movie, but still it was a bit disappointing to not have too many great comedic moments especially since Ryan Reynolds is among the cast. Also in terms of the twists and the villain... It just either doesn't impact or it doesn't make sense, I won't go to in-depth but if you've seen the movie hopefully you'll understand what I mean. Overall: Detective Pikachu is a wonderful, magical movie that has excellent world building but sadly a weak plot that, despite having some truly excellent moments, holds it back from being perceived in excellence. Again, I still loved the movie and I still recommend it to all who are interested because this is a wonderful film that deserves at least a single watch. 7.5/10 rounded to an 8 points

It's easy to get lost in the fact that a live action Pokemon movie was made, but it doesn't hide the fact that the movie is just as mediocre as every other video game movie adaptation out there. One of the glaring flaws (and the worst flaw) about the movie is that the dialogue is terrible; it tries way too hard to be funny and if they did it less frequently I would've been able to get through the movie in less pain. If you're a video game fan then this movie will satisfy you enough to get through the cringy dialogue. If not, I would pass on this one. Expand

I had a smile from ear to ear during the whole movie.
The story is very similar to that of the 3DS video game, the animation is wonderful and the characterization of Ryan Reynolds is outstandingly funny.
Watch the movie, it's just great.

I'm convinced the plot doesn't make sense, but the film itself is amazing. The CGI is gorgeous and the cinematography is phenomenal. It's a fun time at the theater, and that's all I can ask for from a movie like this.

What a relief to finally talk positively about a Videogame Movie (for a while),yeah? Pokémon Detective Pikachu is a delightful experience that is indeed going to entertain a lot of people.
A Videogame Movie that is a Slappy go-lucky version of Who Framed Roger Rabbit set in this Fifth Element type world surrounded by adorable fuzzy creatures must be a dumb concept, but Writer/Director Rob Letterman injects some life to it thanks to a Screenplay (written alongside Jurassic World's Derek Connolly) that, surprisingly, takes the Audience seriously, while still being a fun albeit Emotional buddy cop movie with Pokémons. The emotions factor may be the most interesting thing to talk about. It starts seriously, but then it goes full-on buddy cop movie until the end. This is because it's mostly centered about the friendship between Tim Goodman (played by Justice Smith) and Pikachu, played with life by Ryan Reynolds, who sometimes feels like Deadpool in a CG Fursuit. Everything about the story seems like they cared about the project instead of “We're going to do this thing for money!” (That new Doom movie from Universal looks great!),and the Effects surrounding it are beautiful to look at. From *insert Pokémon name here* to the Set Design and concepts, the movie must have a gorgeous Artbook!
But there are big low points with the movie. For starters, this seems like a great Screenplay, but it's also one that reminded me a lot of The LEGO Movie. Think about it. “Big city where everything is flawless because the President wants to” , “Ethical Evil President threatens to destroy city with this powerful MacGuffin”...It even becomes ‘89 Batman at some point in the 3rd Act (for 30 Seconds) with the Balloon Parade. Add to that an overuse of Plot Twists (that are “very twisty”,but annoying at a point) and a set-up for a Sequel, and you almost had a misfire.
But hey,at least it was a fun romp from start to finish. When I talked about the controversy of Depp and Heard on Instagram,I said “GOD,what a plot twist!”,but I'm starting to think that, for all its flaws, this is probably the better Plot Twist. A good 2ht Movie filled with 40 something Hours of Gameplay must be something we all wished for, right? Especially one that we needed after we saw a big 3hr Superhero Funeral. So yeah,Detective Pikachu is a blast, and that's all that matters. Go see it.

This was a lot better than I expected.

Detective Pikachu is a movie that knows how to entertain and improves in quality as it progresses. It is such a perfect blend of humor, heart, action and world-building. It also helps that the evil plan is a little new and that although some reveals are pretty predictable, there is one that is pretty well done.

A lot of credit should be given to director Rob Letterman, whose previous Goosebumps movie was also a lot better than anyone expected. There were so many ways this film could've gone wrong given the history of video game adaptations. Heck, the movie could've just had some Pokemon characters brought into our world, which is a trend these days. However, Letterman actually managed to adapt the basic structure of the fantasy world of Pokemon into a real world-esque environment. The movie actually cares about the world of Pokemon and should probably please fans. However, it is also mostly accessible to newcomers, by showing how Pokemon work without getting too expositioney. (MOSTLY. I felt the Pokemon's ability to evolve was kept a little vague.)

The amount of computer animation that went into the Pokemon is short of astounding. The entirety of Rhyme City is populated by them. Kids should love them considering how unique and often cute they are. Considering that Pokemon were 2D creations originally, the ability to make them more realistic without losing their qualities was impressive. Although, the texture on the fleshier Pokemon is a little peculiar. It kind of looks like what you'd think a fetus would feel like.

They are also some visually-arresting action scenes. I wasn't a big fan of the constantly grey sky. I mean I know this is supposed to be pseudo-Noirish, but considering how colorful the games were, I would've preferred some more light. Music is distinctive.

The fuzzy mouse-esque Detective Pikachu especially looks good. (And let's be honest, extremely marketable. He's like a teddy bear.) Ryan Reynolds brings on the funny with the character, but he and the script also make you take his deductive skills and more heartfelt moments seriously.

Also, I just want to give props to veteran British actor Bill Nighy appearing in this and treating his role so professionally given the ridiculousness of the film.

Overall, I really enjoyed this.

Justice Smith was not terrible but not good by a long shot. Meanwhile Kathryn Newton was definitively the worst of the bunch with acting on par with Lele Pons, if you can call that acting. The only good part of this movie is the pokemon, but they did not focus enough on them or put enough different pokemon into the movie. I was really looking forward to an amazing world-building live action Pokemon movie, but instead this was what I got. I cannot stress enough how well-done the pokemon were, the FX people and Reynolds carried this movie the entire way. Expand

It really emphazises on character developement and world building. Tim and Pikachu a cleverly written and never disappoint. Some side characters like news reporter Lucy aren't that thought out, but the Pokémon are the real stars here. There's soo much effort put into this and the scene with Mr. Mime as it went on beyond what we saw in the trailer was one of the most creative and funny ideas they had. Other scenes like the fight against charizard were absolutely exciting and great. Everyone who likes Pokémon should go see this movie. Apart from the absolutely unfitting villian along with the weird final showdown this was an absolute joy to watch!

You also should know that the "professional" reviews are absolutely stupid. This is a movie especially for fans who grew up with Pokémon. You quickly notice that the bad reviews come from frumpy old people who never play videogames and simply don't understand the clever use of Pokémon or the fan service, love and care that went into this.
