Although the characters are not very complex in terms of development, they are able to follow the storyline. Additionally, there is a careless disregard for logic and science, which is to be anticipated in a movie of this nature, but it occasionally feels over the top. Oh, and of course Jack Sparrow, who keeps you laughing with his quips and goofy demeanour. Expand

The plot is thin and convoluted, with a lack of originality and too many characters. The story follows a young boy, Henry Turner, as he sets out on a quest to break the curse that has entrapped his father, Will Turner. Along the way, he is joined by an academic astronomer, Carina Smyth, and a drunken Jack Sparrow, as they all search for the Trident of Poseidon, a powerful object that can grant ultimate power over the seas and break curses. However, they are also being chased by a cursed crew of Spanish sailors led by Captain Armando Salazar, who seek revenge on Jack Sparrow. Despite impressive technical abilities, the film fails to capture the same excitement and swashbuckling adventure of its predecessor.

There's lots of decent CGI, fast paced, frenzied action, a quick witted Jack Sparrow and so on. I thought Joaquin Phoenix did particularly well as one of the supernatural characters. Most of the plot details passed me by but it was certainly a pretty entertaining watch anyway, though I'm not sure I'd remember much about it in a few days time, put it that way. This is a pretty easy and entertaining watch but I'm not sure I can say more than that. It is a bit cheesy too, though perhaps that's to be expected?.

If you liked the previous Pirates... films, then yes, I'd recommend, otherwise perhaps not.

The franchise has deteriorated with each new film, and this one was a boring, overblown, sewage fest. It was made for six-year-olds. There was absolutely nothing appealing or interesting about this movie, and it speaks volumes about homo sapiens that it was able to make a kajillion dollars. People are ruled by sentiment. They just want to like the things they once liked so desperately that they overlook the most glaring flaws. It's the sort of thing that keeps people in toxic relationships. Well, America's been in a toxic relationship with Disney for thirty years now, and it's time to break up. They don't respect us; they don't share out values; they just want to whip up hyperactive garbage and expect us to stay with them because they used to make good movies. Time to cut Disney loose. It has also 2 new characters that work well and some new twists / ideas. It has 4 protagonist with Captain Jack Sparrow, Captain Hector Barbossa, Carina Smyth and Henry Turner. With Captain Armando Salazar we get a cruel, ambitious and menacing antagonist. I give you a set up for the characters: Jack Sparrow is out of luck and at a low point after a spectacular coup. He makes a mistake that will cause some of his worst nightmares to come true and starts the events of the movie. Henry Turner is the son of William Turner and Elisabeth Swan. He wants to save his father who is still cursed to be the Captain of the Flying Dutchman. Hector Barbossa has become rich, respected and famous but is on the edge to lose it all as Jack started some terrible events. Carina Smyth is a female adventure with remarkable knowledge and skills that does not want to be chained to what was expected from woman back then (Housewife's and mother with no formal education). She is searching a famous artifact. Finally there is Captain Armando Salazar. He was on a crusade to exterminate all pirates (and was quite successful back then) when he was tricked and cursed. Now he wants vengeance and to continue his work. The story works well. It is for me a good mix of old and new or to put it in other words: A return to the beginnings of the franchise and old and new characters interwoven. I like the excellent intro where Jack can fully deliver, the menacing antagonist that is Captain Salazar including the backstory, Carina and Henry and the conclusion that fixes a mayor complaint. I get that some see it as unoriginal but I refuse to agree. It is more immersive and emotionally attaching than the previous movie. The humor works better than in the previous movie. Lets go to the actors. Johnny Depp is back in his signature role and this time it is more refreshing. You see some new facets of his character and parts of his past. Geoffrey Rush is again Captain Hector Barbossa. Same is true for him. You see new facets and things from his past caught up. He is one of my favorite characters in the franchise. Javier Bardem as antagonist Captain Armando Salazar is so enjoyable. He is on a divine mission to wipe out all pirates. He is intimidating, cruel and self-righteous. You fell his anger and he becomes a dire menace. Brenton Thwaites works as Henry Turner. He instantly won me over as I never doubted his character and motives. Kaya Scodelario as Carina Smyth also won me over. She is clever, skilled and someone you want on your side. Maybe the “She is a witch” jokes are done to often or work not well enough. The humor in general works and there is a good combination of seriousness and humor. None takes away from the other. Again the sets, costumes, ships and weapons look great. It is a standard of the franchise. The battles feel great. It was intense and immersive. I want to praise the conclusions for the characters. It is satisfying and meaningful (Fixes also a complaint from At Worlds End). I nearly forgot to praise the soundtrack as it is given for me that all movies in the franchise have a great score. For those who complain it could have been far worse as this movie was in development hell and there are a lot of stories about issues and problems. Overall this was an enjoyable movie in the franchise. While some complain it gave me hope for the next installment. The overall story and characters won me over and I recommend it to watch. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Thirteen years after the events of At World's End, twelve-year-old Henry Turner boards the Flying Dutchman and informs his father, Will Turner, that the curse which binds Will to the Dutchman and only permits him to step on land once a decade can be broken by the Trident of Poseidon. Henry intends to recruit Captain Jack Sparrow to help find it, but Will believes this is impossible and orders Henry to leave. Will and the Dutchman then disappear into the sea, but Henry vows to find Jack and the Trident.

Nine years later, Henry is a sailor in the British Royal Navy. The ship sails into the supernatural Devil's Triangle and stumbles upon the wreck of the Silent Mary, whose ghostly crew led by Spanish pirate-hunter Captain Salazar attack. Salazar spares Henry's life to deliver a message to Jack: Salazar is coming for him.

In Saint Martin, a young astronomer and horologist named Carina Smyth is sentenced to death for witchcraft but escapes and briefly crosses paths with Jack as he and his crew spectacularly blunder a bank robbery. Having suffered years of such bad luck, Jack's crew lose faith and abandon him. Depressed, Jack trades his magical compass for a drink. However, this betrayal of the compass frees Salazar and his crew from the Devil's Triangle. Carina learns Henry is looking for the Trident's location and offers to help him using her unknown father's diary. Carina and Jack are captured and face execution, but are saved by Henry and Jack's crew, setting sail on the Dying Gull. Carina deciphers clues that the stars will lead to an island where the Trident is hidden.

Meanwhile, Captain Barbossa hears from his pirate crew that the revived Captain Salazar has killed several pirates at sea and is destroying Barbossa's fleet. Barbossa manages to talk his way out of being killed by offering to help find Jack and learns that the Trident could lead him to a new "treasure". Salazar agrees, wanting revenge on the pirate that caused his demise. Salazar pursues the Dying Gull, forcing Jack, Henry, and Carina to flee to an island, discovering that Salazar's crew cannot go on land. After saving Jack from a forced marriage, Barbossa allies himself with Jack, returning his compass and restoring the miniaturized Black Pearl, trapped in a bottle by Blackbeard, to its original size. They all continue their journey to the Trident's island, with Barbossa taking command of the Pearl once more. During the voyage, Jack and Barbossa realize Carina is the latter's long-lost daughter. Barbossa tells Jack that he had left her at an orphanage with his diary so she could live a better life, and refuses to tell her the truth so she will continue to believe her father was an astronomer.

Approaching the Trident's island, the Pearl evades a British Navy warship, which is destroyed by the Silent Mary before the Pearl runs aground on the island. Jack, Barbossa, and Carina use the island's magic to part the ocean and open a path to the Trident's location on the ocean floor. Salazar captures Henry and possesses him in order to walk on the ocean floor and seize the Trident. Once he does so, Henry is given his body back, and Jack distracts Salazar, allowing Henry to destroy the Trident, breaking all curses upon the sea and restoring Salazar's crew to life. However, the divided sea begins to collapse in on itself. The Pearl lowers its anchor to lift them to safety, but Salazar pursues them, still hell-bent on killing Jack. Carina realizes that Barbossa is her father when she spots a tattoo on his arm identical to the diary's cover. Barbossa sacrifices himself to kill Salazar, allowing the others to escape alive.

Sometime later, Henry and Carina reach Port Royal, where Will appears, free from the Dutchman. His wife, Elizabeth, appears moments later and the Turner family reunites. Henry and Carina kiss. Jack watches from the Pearl in faux-disgust before sailing away into the horizon, having been accepted by his crew as their captain once again, while also adopting Captain Barbossa's now-homeless monkey.

Perhaps the most noticeable parts are the pacing, action, and set pieces. I truly felt that this movie was based in the 1600's/1700's because the set pieces were just so darn good. The pacing is great, I didn't feel bored at all. This movie did have a good bit of action in in too, and it all felt authentic. The acting is great too, although some dialogue felt a bit, um, too humorous. That brings me to my main complaint, the humor. There is a lot of humor and some of it, or most of it, feels a bit unnecessary and forced. Yes, there are some laughs to be had, but for the most part they are very forced and just plain silly. Other than that, fantastic movie! Expand

The Movie Was Greatt, Fantastic new casting of David wenham..Javier Bardem..Brenton Thwaites..Kaya Scodelario it wass the best new faces casting you’ll need for this moviee , Javier did the best job For his Role as Salazar it was breathtaking , Barbossa was not as Good in the last movies , not as good meaning he did not have a classic sword fight scene , only a 3 second scene with one of salazar’s men , Brenton and Kaya & David wenham did a great jobb for their roles Gibbs too , but Jackkk , he was not as funny or as Smart like in the other movies , i mean he did have some sword fights with salazar but not a classy one where the Main theme is playing , and yes he played it smart in the scene where he saves henry from the sharks that was good but not enough Jack usually is like that in the entire movie , And at the end where he Skillfully removes the sword from henry to give it to barbossa... that was good too i meeaan the directors must give us something , But they should have given us mor from Sparroww that would have Made this Movie a 10 , And lastly The reunion of William and elizabeth was the best ending !!❤️❤️ Expand

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is not the best movie in the series, but it is better than the one before (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides).
The first one will be always my favorite, but this one did great. I did not love it, but I liked it!
And I found a lot of problems in this movie!
The humor most of the time was ridiculous and not funny!
The way we saw Jack Sparrow for the first time in this movie, was usual, it was perfectly CGI-ed, but made no goddamn sense!
The performance of Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow was not impressive as it was in the first movie, but it was good.
I am still hoping to see a movie such as the first one in this franchise, cause they made some wrong things right in this one.
The performance of the characters was not bad, but not really good.. less than fine to be honest!
I loved the performance of Barbossa, Salazar and I liked Jack Sparrow too.
The action scenes were pretty good, and the CGI was totally amazing!
Sometimes it was funny, but not every joke worked up with me actually.
The story was more than great, and the ending was the best ending in the franchise!
As a result, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is such a good movie, so I am going to give B.
It is a really worth-watching movie!

In Dead Men Tell No Tales, he's simply drunk - and aside from some minor double-crossing, not a scoundrel. His cleverness is gone; in its place is a bumbling idiot who is narratively used for comic relief and nothing else.

Instead, Pirates 5 focuses on the son of original-trilogy lovebirds Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann - Henry Turner. He sets out to find the trident of Poseidon, because it can reverse ALL curses. Given Will Turner's fate at the end of Pirates 3 (At World's End), it's not hard to see where this is going. Add in a seemingly-random young woman astronomer who was always ready with a socially progressive quip or two, and it is time to set off on an adventure. And the adventure itself is decent. Kind of. You've got your weird mysticism, grand sea battles, and resolution of how to free a ship from a bottle (though that last part is very disappointing). Bardem is a decent villain, Geoffrey Rush's Barbosa returns to chew scenery, and the innocent-yet-determined young people are convincing. But the main reason I like to watch Pirate films is watch Jack Sparrow connive his way into and out of danger. That magic is long gone.

You can do better than this, f*cktards.

This film does a couple needed things and f*cks them up immediately. For example Jack Sparrow is more of a supporting character this time like in the first movie which is a good call. The problem is that he's a dumbass in this film. Not only is Johnny Depp's portrayal of him pretty much a parody of a parody in this movie, but the character is just a drunken retard. He's no more interesting or charismatic, he's just a random comedic relief for the most part with terrible forced comedy. Although he still looks cool. The makeup, the clothes and the hair are always going to look good on him.

Most of the characters here are pretty bland. The main actors Kaya Scodelario and Brenton Thwaites give alright performances, but unfortunately they don't have that much chemistry together and their motivations aren't that interesting. I never really felt invested in their characters or the story. The only truly interesting character in the film is the antagonist Armando Salazar, portrayed by Javier Bardem. He was excellent except when the film forced some stupid humor on his dialogue.

Speaking of the humor, it's dogsh*t. The humor ruins everything. It's just randomly forced in to the scenes for no reason. In the other films, especially the first one, the humor blended well in to the events of the scene and a lot of times the actors were able to make a scene funny even without it being the main point. But in this film all these lame unfunny things are just forced in to the scene in the most awkward way possible where they're literally rubbing it to your goddamn face and screaming "LAUGH YOU F*CKING C*NT". It's so bad that it just ruins any investment that you might've had for the scene earlier.

It's a shame really. There's definitely potential for this to be good. The antagonist is good, the main characters Henry Turner and Carina Smyth are decent and the movie looks really nice and has some alright action. But it's all absolutely ruined by the lack of an interesting story that's worth to tell and the tosh cum humor that's forced in so obviously that I was just angry with it instead of, you know, f*cking laughing like humor is supposed to have you do.

On May 25, the fifth movie of the franchise "Pirates of the Caribbean" was released for hire - "The Dead Do not Tell a Fairy Tale". I advise you to watch this movie for you.
The critics who criticized the film concentrated (erroneously, in my opinion) on the chaotic nature of the narrative. From this it was possible to conclude that the "Dead Man" turned out to be a delusional mess - but at least a mess from beautiful frames and a cheerful action. Let there is no sense and the general logic of the story, let the story - crap, but at least shooter and jokes individually can entertain, right? Not a fig. The main disadvantage of the new part is that it is completely empty - to the horror of boring, viscous, like a quagmire and equally barren. It's not that there is no logic in what is happening (although it is not), the fact is that there is nothing happening in it - nothing is happening here literally. Endless scenes of some conversations, aimlessly fermenting, again bubnj and muttering, horrible sorting jokes, so-so the final epic - and the long-awaited titles. This frankly bloated hack-work did not feel even a quarter, oddly enough. "Dead" resemble a game made under an expensive license - in a hurry, just to cut the dough on the title. So here everything is cardboard, secondary and absolutely dead. Depp here does not look like such an otzharatym hog, as in "Fantastic creatures", but no use from Sparrow. True, Depp's guilt is not here - he's completely in shape, it's just that writers for some reason have deprived the protagonist of the franchise of all human qualities, having washed it up to the level of JJ Binks. The sparrow walks without pants, is constantly drunk in the insole and most often does not know where he is or what he is doing. No cunning plans and intrigues, clever moves and brilliantly successful mistakes. He makes a miserable impression - it's before you realize that you're embarrassed for him, like the described grandfather with Alzheimer. It's just painful to watch such a murder of a character. The fifth film is an even bigger spin-off, the problem is that it's not even Sparrow. Not Will, Elizabeth, Barbossa, Davy Jones, Tia Dalma, Monkey Jack, Gibbs or any other memorable character. No, this spin-off of two new, completely unfamiliar to the viewer and tightly deprived charisma of heroes. The son of Will and Elizabeth named Henry and his girlfriends, the girls who, because of her learning, want to burn like a witch.

Trying to shove us with cheap imitations for Will and Elizabeth are counted. He is a cute, brave fellow, a little naive and straightforward, and she is a daring girl of no time, too shy and smart to accept the role assigned to her by society.

M-yes, we have never seen such anywhere. It remains to adjust for these younger Will and Liz own mini-Sparrow (let him play the role of Monkey Jack) and the franchise will successfully pass the phase of a soft restart. Straight to the bottom. But still I love this franchise and I'll look forward to the new part of the film! Let go of the Kraken!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Here we go again, Disney can't stop making them. I understand that the previous one made a lot of money - but that doesn't mean that you should stop giving a **** about the **** characters and original films! **** THIS MOVIE HAS SO MANY PLOT HOLES!! Why does Jack receive his compass from a captain of a ship IF IT'S CLEARLY STATED IN THE SECOND ONE THAT TIA DALMA GAVE IT TO HIM? If the Poseidon's trident breaks all curses, how is Will Turner alive WITHOUT HIS GOD DAMNED HEART?? IT'S LOCKED IN A CHEST!!! There are many more, I can complain all day. The characters of Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann are replaced with their really bad proteges and Depp seems to have lost the spark that made him so likable in the older movies. I am very disappointed and hopeful that this franchise would die with a poor box office performance. Expand

This movie is so meh that I forgot to post a review.

I will come forward and say I am still a fan of the series. I will still probably go see the next movie, if they have one. Also, while this is a very middle of the road type movie, it is still way better than the last couple of installments have been. The writing is better, the direction seems better, and the story is not so random, well there is some randomness but its a Pirates of the Caribbean movie so that is expected.

There really isn't a lot of negative about the movie per se. The only thing really cringeworthy was the CGI younger characters. Just didn't quite work for me, but I don't know if that is because the CGI sucks, or if I am just seeing things differently then others due to colorblindness (sometimes that throws things off). The story itself wasn't bad in most parts, a bit predictable but nothing to be shocked about.

However, I am really tired of zombie or other forms of undead pirates. Seriously, couldn't they have come up with a villain that wasn't undead? Even on the top of my head you could pick up some sort of fairy/elven type thing. Call them Atlantean and maybe Jack screwed them over in the past. Hell, I would take werewolf pirates just to make it different. I did appreciate the Cthulhu nature of Davy Jones, but that wasn't enough for me.

They could also avoid the whole paranormal creature hunting him and why not a human wizard, or the Catholic church with some mysticism (full disclosure I was raised Catholic so no I don't think they are Satanists and thats why they should be villains). There is plenty of options that don't involve the same undead CGI.

However, like I said I would go see the next installment. Oh, and there is a stinger in mid and end credits so you won't waste your time too much if you wait for it.

The good: Wrapped up some earlier plotlines... sort of.

The bad: Nothing was bad really, just sort of blah.

There's an interesting phenomenon to be seen in the reviews of this movie: Many of the people giving it good reviews have only ever written reviews about this single movie - Make of that what you will.

Anyway, I've just seen this movie myself after deciding to rent it on YouTube to enjoy a quiet night in. It started well enough, with an intriguing continuation of the Turner family and a fun and exciting action sequence shortly after that really captured the spirit of the old movies - then the mediocre story, recycled villain (literally another captain cursed to roam the seas with a ghost ship - only this time he isn't a pirate) and relatively boring music track kicked in and ruined it all. It wasn't as terrible as the last one, but it certainly doesn't stand up to the first three. I'll be fair and give it a five, because I understand that I'm much older than I was when I watched the original trilogy, and shows like Game of Thrones and Walking Dead have given me a lust for the blood of main characters that a Disney movie isn't really going to fulfil, but there's definitely some of the original charm and passion of the older movies missing in this one.

It's ability to return a sense of fun into the series comes at the expense of the plot. The story-telling is half-heated and it's cool new villain is ultimately rendered forgettable despite an excellent performance from Javier Bardem. Yes, this one is all about the jokes and some over-the-top action sequences. Ultimately I can live with that. It's a big improvement over the blandness of the last three Pirates films.

Johnny Depp is once again able to remind us why his character was so likable the first time around. Here though his buffoonery and eccentric mannerisms are heightened to the point of being cartoonish. It ensures that there are more laughs in the film than ever before, but it makes it hard to actually take any of this seriously. A shame as the first Pirates managed to both make us laugh and get invested in it's characters and plot. The whole cast is largely on point. Particularly the returning faces such as the always excellent Geoffrey Rush and Kevin McNally. Newcomers Brenton Thwaites and Kaya Scodelario are basically just there to inject some new pretty faces into the mix, but they manage to fit in with the rest of the cast quite well. Fans will get a kick out of seeing the long-awaited return of Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann, even if only briefly. When all is said and done this latest Pirates flick gets more right than it does wrong. Especially when in comparison to those truly dreadful sequels that came before it. It makes Pirates fun again. The problem is that it's just lacking in any sort of depth. It's all about the jokes and flashy action, both of which it has in spades. Neither of those make for a great movie when the writing is weak and the villain is so sadly squandered, but at least it's entertaining. I still don't think Pirates should have ever gone past the first movie, but at least this latest outing seems to point towards what could eventually be a decent follow up to the original.

Sandberg and Rønning manage to take this film forward with a very good narrative that never gets boring. The CGI is impressive, although this does not reach the height of At the End of the World (which in 2007 was nominated for the Oscar for Best Visual Effects). This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ever since the Pirates of the Caribbean Ride opened in Disneyland, the producers pitched the idea of adapting the ride into a fantastic action-packed movie entitled Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, and four sequels following the significant characters. The characters include the witty pirate Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), his friends, and crew members on The Black Pearl; the ship based on the original film. The franchise was lucky at the box office, with Dead Men Tell No Tales garnering over $794 million worldwide. Unfortunately, the reviews of their movies started to drown, and this film is no exception.
Whether people enjoy viewing movies about action, pirates, or comedy, the fifth installment in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise will disappoint audience members at the movie theater. Not only does the film define what the franchise should not be, but also gives the viewers a clear perspective on every flaw in the sequels. Although the sequel was a summer blockbuster, the majority of audience members left the theater seasick.
During the evolution of the franchise, the various writers transform Captain Jack Sparrow from an intelligent, witty pirate captain to a drunken, comedic caricature of himself. Throughout several scenes in the movie, Sparrow turns to rum as a source of happiness. Unfortunately, the writer depicts Sparrow's addiction in a lousy way. For example, after the poignant scene of Sparrow’s crew abandoning him on the Dying Gull; an old ship that the team of the Black Pearl now possess, Sparrow scavenges for rum in the village. When Sparrow finally finds rum, he gives up his most valuable possession, a compass that points to someone’s desire. After these few moments, Sparrow is tipsy throughout the entire duration of the movie, especially in the beginning acts.
In addition to Captain Jack Sparrow’s character alter, Johnny Depp will not satisfy the audience with his performance of Sparrow. Since the 2003 original film, Depp has gained worldwide attention of acting as Sparrow. In the case of Dead Men Tell No Tales, though, the entire world seemed to lose interest because of Depp’s final performance as Sparrow. Depp’s performance leads to fans and viewers commenting online about his retirement saving the franchise. After four consecutive blockbuster sequels, Depp’s performance in Dead Men Tell No Tales foreshadows an empty stretch of water ahead for the franchise to cover.
Though it had a massive production budget, the film proves that nothing will save this movie from drowning. The movie will not fulfill anyone’s expectation of a great movie because it entirely changes Captain Jack Sparrow’s character. Besides, the plotlines are similar to the other sequels of the franchise. Either way, Dead Men Tell No Tales, is a merchandising film and will neither entertain fans nor everyday moviegoers.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The new characters were so bad (carina's character is so stereotyped) and introduced in such a bad way (salazar just comes outta nowhere) that I would have much preferred if they actually turned over a new leaf with this episode rather than keep on grinding the old ones. The quest itself is just so disproportionate, looking for such an overpowered item that makes the quests of the previous films look so ridiculous and useless. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie put all of it's funny jokes into the trailer, and the CGI could be from the the 1998 Godzilla movie. The younger version of Jack Sparrow looks nothing like Johnny Depp, and the movie is possibly the worst of all the Pirates movies. They snuck in very sensual references, and spent what felt like an hour referring to Carina Smyth as a horologist, with another pirate calling his mother a horologist. This movie tried to be funny, using humor that 12 year olds tell each other on the school bus. The only good thing about this movie was johnny depp's performance. Expand

After the conclusion of the original trilogy felt aimless and lacking both direction and the spirit of the first film. However, after watching DMTNT, I was reminded why loved the first movie so much. Pirates is the right mix of old and new, with favorites like Jack Sparrow and Barbossa (who are both given great material to work with) returning as well as new faces like Will and Elizabeth's son, Henry, as well as Carina Smyth, whom I don't want to spoil the revelation involving her. And their adventure to find the newest treasure of the Caribbean is easily the most fun I've had with a Pirates film since the first film. This is largely because, the script for the movie has so much heart and it avoids becoming overly complicated, a problem that plagued early films. The action is high-octane, the one-liners are hilarious, and when the film gets serious, the big pay-offs are surprisingly touching. Really the only two problems I have, are the "been there, done that" design of the villains, and the fact that I felt the movie wasn't the most welcoming to casual fans. I felt like my experience was greatly improved because I was familiar with the events of past films. However, I imagine that without that knowledge, people coming into the franchise for the first time might not understand the finer details or the weight some of the big climatic moments the movie has. Nonetheless, the film is just a fun adventure with a satisfying conclusion. I watched it with a smile on my face almost the entire time. I don't know whether or not the series will continue or not. If not, the series will end on a high note. If so, I'm excited to see what comes next. A Pirate's life for me. Yoho. Expand

Not the franchise's best, best definitely not the worst. Even at it's worst, it was better than At World's End, and it was miles above On Stranger Tides. But still, not as good as Curse of the Black Pearl or Dead Man's Chest.

Great performances and set pieces all around. Capt Jack as usual is a delight to watch on screen.

This movie really ties up all the plot lines. If this is the send off for the series it is a good one. Hopefully the don't try to pull this out from the grave since it now has a fitting end.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Quite entertaining despite all the bad reviews. Critics are just tired of Jack Sparrow I think. They are not tired of Fast and Furious movies though ? The movie is fun and better than the 4th one. Kaya Scodelario makes a good addition as Carina Smyth. Who gets either confused as a witch or...a whore because she's a horologist lol. There's plenty of humor like that throughout that makes this one of the better Pirates movies.
While Javier Bardem once again makes a great villain as Captain Salazar. Who from the trailers you probably figured out, is a spirit wants vengeance on Jack Sparrow.
Otherwise stuff, like the search for Poseidon's Trident is as silly as the search for the fountain of youth in the last film. Also don't expect too much Orlando Bloom but it's nice to see him back nevertheless.
If this is the last one I wouldn't complain since it's a fitting ending.

Too many vanilla jokes, especially in the early movie, instead of the usual beloved 'outsmarted' dialogues from Jack and dumb situations/moves.

The story is superficial, the majority feels pretty irrelevant, the climax super artificially dramatic and the ending boringly(/awkward->even my gf said this) soppy. The structure remembers me of typical Disney-Princess-movies.

If this movie wasn't Pirates of the Caribbean, and you'd expect an okayish pirate movie with alternating comedy and adventure sequences, you'll be satisfied.
But for a Pirates of the Caribbean-movie, it's disappointing

I have been a pirates fan as I think these movies are great fun and one of the better examples of good popcorn entertainment. that being said pirates of the Caribbean dead man tell no tales does a great job trying to capture the spirit of the original and does a good job in some places and falls in others. I liked how this was more of a fun straigtforward pirate romp that did not put captain jack as one of the leads but as a side character to our two main heroes. Geffory rush as barbosa was a joy to watch and much of the action while played for laughs was intense and exciting to watch. much of the cinematography was beautifully done. Jack was funnier than he was in 4 and 3. As for our two new comes i thought they did an alright job. I never felt that they reached the heights in terms of acting to kira knightly and orlando bloom but ever there romance got cringy as the movies went on. That being said many things fall flat. While javier bardem was good as the villain i did not find him particularly menacing or interesting unlike davy jones. His introduction was great but his character soon fell flat. As for the rest of the cast the acting was either really good from the likes of johnny depp and geffory rush or very serviceable. In conclusion it was a lot better than I was expecting but the director tried his best to capture the magic of the original and succeeded in some ways but failed in others. I will not be doing a review for the other films so here is how i rank them 1,2,5,3,4 Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pirates Of The Caribbean is one of my favorite movie franchises of all time. I loved the first 3 movies, and enjoyed parts of 4. Going into Dead Men Tell No Tales, I was really excited. It had great Norwegian directors behind it (Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg), the trailers were great and I was expecting a great fun ride. I left the movie really satisfied. This is the best Pirates movie since The Curse Of The Black Pearl (2003).

Plot: Johnny Depp returns to the big screen as the iconic, swashbuckling anti-hero Jack Sparrow in the all-new Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. The rip-roaring adventure finds down-on-his-luck Captain Jack feeling the winds of ill-fortune blowing strongly his way when deadly ghost sailors, led by the terrifying Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem), escape from the Devil's Triangle bent on killing every pirate at sea—notably Jack. Jack's only hope of survival lies in the legendary Trident of Poseidon, but to find it he must forge an uneasy alliance with Carina Smyth (Kaya Scodelario), a brilliant and beautiful astronomer, and Henry (Brenton Thwaites), a headstrong young sailor in the Royal Navy. At the helm of the Dying Gull, his pitifully small and shabby ship, Captain Jack seeks not only to reverse his recent spate of ill fortune, but to save his very life from the most formidable and malicious foe he has ever faced.

It was full of great action, effects, humor, music, acting, it was a lot of fun, and it has a good, but complicated story. The beginning of the movie with young Henry meeting his father Will on board the Dutchman was toughing and sets up the motivation for Henry wanting the Trident perfectly. Carina's motivations for getting the Trident, while not as great as Henry's, was still good.

Jack Sparrow is the same Jack Sparrow we all know and love, and Johhny Deep is once again great as the character, Salazar was a great villain with a great motivation for wanting revenge against Jack, Henry and Carina were great new additions to the franchise, but not on the same level as Will and Elizabeth, but way better then the priest (or whatever he was) and the mermaid in On Stranger Tides. The best character in the movie was Barbossa. Geoffrey Rush is fantastic as he has been in all of the movies, and the fact that Carina is revealed to be Barbossa's daughter is fantastic, and his sacrifice at the end was great and sad.

The ending with Henry reuniting with his father (Will), and Will reuniting with Elizabeth, and Jack setting course for a new adventure was amazing and would a great ending to the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise, but there is an after credits scene, which maybe teases a potential sixth Pirates movie with the return of fan- favorite villain Davy Jones.

Problems I have with the movie are one subplot that wasn't needed and led to nothing and an underwhelming climax compared with the other movies' climaxes.

Overall, Dead Men Tell No Tales is a great fun ride that I was never bored with. I think the critics are being way way to hard on this movie. If you love the Pirates movies, even if you weren't a fan of the 4th one, you will enjoy this movie. If you didn't like the Pirates sequels (or the Pirates movies), then this one will not change your mind. If you require movie to be serious or make sense logically, then this isn't the movie for you.

Final verdict: 8,5/10 or 9/10

Dead Men marks the fifth entry in the series, already past the point at which any series that's lasted that long often begins to come apart at the seams, though that isn't the case here. The franchise zombie was Stranger Tides- Dead Men is a better movie overall, injecting fresh blood in the form of new leading characters. Javier Bardem delights with his talent for portraying genuinely creepy villains, and the visual effects and orchestral score once again impress in a series known for such. The series trademark mixture of swashbuckling and the supernatural is in full force here, though I think they could have done a lot more with Salazar and his ghost crew, especially when you compare them to Davy Jones and his sea-draugr. The artifact of the day also gets very little screen time and, considering who it belongs to, a token appearance by its owner would have been pretty amazing. Geoffrey Rush once again portrays the conflicted and extra sea-salty Hector Barbossa, who finally gets his moment in the sun. The weakest link in this film is actually Johnny Depp- I don't know if it's him or how they wrote Jack, but he might as well not have been in the film at all. He spends most of it in a drunken stupor and were it not for Salazar's single-minded vengeance against him, many of the characters might well have avoided hassle of the undead variety. Expand

Note: I really like the first four movies.

This movie is missing what made the previous ones great: somewhat complex plots where different characters interact, each with a different motivation. Jack usually interweaves between these motivations with cleverness, negotiation, and some planning. However, In this movie there was no complex plot, the plot didn't make much sense (and contradicted some of the things implied or stated in previous movies), and everyone except the evil antagonist ended up wanting the same object (and to use that object in exactly the same way, making them all allies against the antagonist). Jack has always had scenes where he cleverly plans an escape or series of actions (often surprising bystanders with his ingenuity), but there were no such scenes in this one. Jack sometimes did things that were inexplicable, but these actions were never proven to be particularly intelligent. (Possibly it was meant to be humourous?) Jack spent almost the entire movie imprisoned, tied up, or being chased - unlike other movies, Jack spent almost no time leading anyone anywhere (whether directly as Captain or indirectly as adviser/selective informer).

I found the antagonist to be distasteful. He seemed to be on a murderous rampage, not caring who got in his way. The story suggests he got a really powerful ship (before being cursed), but it didn't make sense to me. Several ships attacking his all at once should have left a dent, but didn't. The antagonist and his ship, crew, and animals that just happened to be in the area are all cursed for entering an area - but whenever anyone else enters that same area, no curse is applied. After the curse, his ship had strange abilities that make you wonder why these "curses" are always such blessings if you want to be the perfect murdering machines (their abilities were more powerful and varied even than Davy Jones's!) Whereas Blackbeard valued little life other than his own, this captain seems to be thrilled at the idea of killing anyone he deems his enemy (with what I perceive to be inconsistent morals).

There were no significant twists in the plot - it told you almost everything that was going to happen near the beginning; the rest just followed through. The plot revisited William Turner, and showed a number of things about his condition that don't add up with what the previous movies implied. What happened to Will's father? Didn't William have a job to do, that - if he fulfilled it - he wouldn't have any fish-corrosion on him (as Davy Jones did)? In the beginning, isn't William in command of the Dutchman - so why did he act like the crew was going to do some evil thing to William's son (who was visiting)?

Minor notes:
-I saw it in 3D, but found that the 3D didn't add anything to it.
-The music was fine; they managed to keep the same type of music while varying it enough from previous movies to be pleasant to listen to.
-A lot of the characters from the previous movies didn't show up in this one (and Angelica was implied to be involved in future movies based on the ending of the 4th, but wasn't).
-I didn't care for most of the ending (too much death for my liking).

Overall, the scenes didn't make much sense and very little of it was enjoyable. The beginning few scenes were fun, but they failed to introduce the elements needed to make it a good movie. As one who very much enjoyed the previous four films, I do not recommend watching this one.
